One day. Two couples. Five people who will have their lives changed.
This book grabbed my attention from the very first page and didn't let go. I read this in one day as part of Boldwood Books Readalong series. I did not want to put this book down, so I didn't. I felt for certain characters, got angry at others, admired some, and shared a laugh with others. Over the course of one day, your life can change in so many ways.
When Tress Walker waved goodbye to her husband, Max, on his way to a conference, she had no idea that soon she would be going into labor. When her water broke and contractions began, she could not reach her husband. He was not answering her calls.
Max's best friend, Noah Clark, also said goodbye to his wife, Anya, that morning, who was also on her way to a conference. They had tense words the night before and he wanted to reach out to her. When she didn't answer her phone, he called her office and learned his wife had lied to him.
Nancy Jenkins, their outspoken and reliable neighbor is getting her hair done before meeting her first love at a reunion. But when Tress calls needing a ride to the hospital, she has a decision to make.
WOWZA! I could not help but feel sorry while also admiring both Tress and Noah. What a day they both had. Both are good, kind and likeable characters. Both had their worlds turned upside down. Noah had to learn the truth the hard way and have his heart broken in so many ways. Yet, he remained professional, kind and was a rock for Tress as she gave birth. Tress was loving and wise. She didn't deserve how her day turned out either but handled it with grace. I also loved Val and Nancy and their friendship and strength. Who wouldn't want to take the bull by the horns as they sometimes did when people were annoying them. Nancy was a hoot!
I loved how every chapter was a character's POV. There were times in this book, I found myself thinking "No, no, no, no, no!" and others where I felt various emotions. This book was equal parts gripping, tense and emotional. It's heartbreaking but ends on a hopeful note.
Man, I was not expecting to feel so much when I started this book. This would make a fantastic book club selection. There is so much to discuss here. I found this book to be well written and well thought out. I also enjoyed the pacing.
This was my first book by Shari Low and I look forward to reading more of her books in the future.
Gripping, heartbreaking, tense and hard to put down!

EXCERPT: Val was still fidgeting with her phone and Nancy got that. They were both convinced that being of a certain age gave them an affliction that caused severe delays at every stage of mobile phone use. Wrong password. Face I.D. not working. Thumbprint buggered. And then when they did get in, they needed to suss out whether they had received a Facebook message, a snapchat, WhatsApp, a text, or an alert from an energy company saying that their next electricity bill was going to require them to remortgage the house. After Val had worked her way through all of these options, she shook her head. 'Nope, wasn't me either.'
'Och, bugger . . .' Nancy mumbled, pulling her bag onto her lap and having a rummage, before finally liberating her phone. She hadn't even thought to check because she didn't expect anyone to be looking for her. Unless it was Angie wanting new batteries for her hand fans.
Thumbprint? Not working. Two attempts to enter the password? Finally in. Text? Nope. WhatsApp? Nope. Facebook message? There it was.
'Right girls, hang on to your knickers.' She cleared her throat and started reading. 'New message from Eddie Mackie:
Nancy I couldn't sleep last night for thinking about seeing you again tonight. We've got so many years to make up for. Counting the hours. Love, Eddie.'
The other two didn't say a word, just eyed her expectantly, waiting for her reaction. Ten minutes ago, she'd decided she wasn't going, and she stood by that decision. She wasn't the kind of woman to be swayed by mushy words that romantic fairy tales. She was too old and too long in the tooth to go chasing after fantasies.
Wasn't she?
Oh, bugger it!
'Tress, love,' she blurted. 'I just need a word with the wee one.' She leaned forward so that she was speaking to Tress's bump. MY THOUGHTS: I am really torn about this book. On one level, I loved it. I loved the drama, the tragedy, the love, the humour. On another level, I found it repetitive in many places, and occasionally flat. There were instances where I felt I was being 'told' instead of experiencing things.
I did have some difficulty initially getting into this read and dallied over the opening chapters for a few days. But once I did, I read the final 60% in one sitting, hardly daring to breathe. I laughed, I cried, I got angry, I empathised, I shook my head in despair and crossed my fingers for luck.
Nancy and Val and their antics are very important to the book. They provide some light relief for the darker thread that runs through the plot involving the very pregnant Tress, her husband Max, his best friend Noah, and Noah's wife Anya.
One Day With You is an intensely emotional read featuring, amongst other things, infidelity, death, dementia, and second-chance love. A bizarre mix, but it mostly works. It is told from the points of view of Tress, Max, Noah and Nancy, the bulk of the story taking place over a twenty four hour period.
I don't believe either the cover art or the comments on the cover reflect the true nature of this book. To me they suggest a lighthearted read. One Day With You is anything but.

This is a story that takes place over the course of one day and how all the main characters have interlocking lives. Shari Low writes women's friendship fiction like no other and One Day With You is no exception. As soon as I see a new book by this author I have to read it right away. This book shattered my heart and was such a moving story of two couples who are best friends and when deceit and tragedy strikes two of them have to stay strong for each other and their partners, and the other two have a lot to answer for.
This is one of the most emotional books I have read in a long time. I felt so terribly sad for the kindhearted Tress, who is about to give birth to her long awaited baby. And poor Noah, trying to stay strong for everyone but especially Tress while she is in labour and being an honest friend after the baby is born. I felt so much anger towards Max and Anya and their selfishness that destroyed lives. The Nancy storyline was fresh and funny. I was literally laughing out loud at her antics with Val. It was also nice to read about a late in life romance. I loved how this story has wonderfully fleshed out characters and how they acted like real people and the conclusion was very true to life as well. If you enjoy books that evoke many emotions, have lots of drama, and a bit of romance this is the book for you. All. The. Stars.

Max & Tress. Noah & Anya. Two couples who begin the day not realizing what lies ahead of them. Their lives are about to get hit by a tsunami of change. As a reader I almost felt like I was a victim of whiplash. Shari Low takes a 24- hour period for these two couples and lays bare a secret. Meanwhile Tress is in labor with her first baby. Sixty-something neighbors Nancy and Val help her get to the hospital. Their story lines are endearing and relatable. Really enjoyed the contrast of the hospital with the events going on for the older generation around town. At the center of this story is the heartbreaking consequences of infidelity. A cautionary tale if ever there was one.

One Liner: A good blend of emotions
Tress Walker and her loving husband Max are expecting their first child. Max goes off for an overnight meeting in London when Tress goes into labor. She takes help from her next-door neighbor Nancy Jenkins, unaware that Max is not where he said he would be.
Nancy is excited to meet her first crush Eddie at the school reunion. At 66, she wonders if life is giving her a second chance. However, Tress’s request for help cannot be ignored. She loves Tress too much to say no.
Noah Clark and his wife Anya seem to be having marriage troubles. Noah isn’t sure if he should share his concerns with his best friend, Max, until he can sort out his emotions. Soon, he uncovers a secret that shatters his heart and emotions.
What happens on that one day will change all their lives forever.
The story comes in the third-person POV of Tress, Noah, and Nancy.
My Thoughts:
I knew what to expect when I requested the book. I wasn’t looking for a fresh theme/ topic. I was only curious to see how the author executed it.
Structuring the story to fit it within a day was a good idea. The day is divided into sections, which made it easy to track parallel events. The detailed epilogue at the end ensures the readers have their answers.
The characters weren’t deep or layered. What you see is what you get. This actually helped the plot from being overcomplicated or intense. I prefer books with contained emotions, so this worked for me. (The emotional quotient will vary for each reader).
There are bits of humor that may or may not be funny but do their job to lighten the situation. Tress, Noah, Nancy, and Val deal with different issues in their own ways, so the jokes kept things light when they go too heavy.
I liked how Tress’s mother isn’t the stereotypical bitter/ emotionally unavailable mom. Tress grew up in a positive environment, and her trust in Max stems from her good heart.
Another aspect I liked was the age gap between Tress and Max. It wasn’t highlighted or used for the plot. It was what it was. ().
The pacing was decent, though the book felt a little laborious (excuse the pun) in the middle. I wanted the story to move on to the next stage.
Max’s POV was well-done. I have no sympathy for him or Anya. However, the execution molded the character very well. It was impactful, more than Tress or Noah’s POV.
Nancy’s POV was interesting too, and I was glad to see everything come together at the end. The found family trope was heartwarming to read.
To summarize, One Day With You is a heartwarming read that handles multiple themes with a deft touch. I look forward to reading more by the author.

What’s the one thing you could never forgive?
Shari Low has cemented herself firmly in my list of auto-buy authors! Time and time again she amazes me with her ability to share a moving journey through her genuine and layered characters. She takes the worst of human nature and mixes it with a situation we’d never want to experience and then presents us with a gripping story we can’t set down. In this case, an avalanche of emotions is set off by the repercussions of a single choice - a choice that was made in secret and intended to be kept a secret. Readers watch the unravelling of four lives on a collision course with destiny; a terrible accident caused by deception and a regrettable choice.

Shari Low has cemented herself firmly in my list of auto-buy authors! Time and time again she amazes me with her ability to share a moving journey through her genuine and layered characters. My first Shari Low book and this will not be my last!
What a read.
This book is packed full of drama, it's quite hard to believe it is set over the space of one day! At the start of the day, no one will realise that at the end of it, their lives will never be the same again.
There are lots of characters and while I didn't like some behaviour by some characters (If you read it, you'll know) it was all integral to the story, so completely necessary.
Nancy was my favourite, her funny quips had me in stitches! I'd love her to be my BFF.
I did find myself confused at times, forgetting who was married to who, but the cast list at the start was so helpful!
There is lots to unpick from the drama, but I don't want to give spoilers. It's a fabulous read. Full of secrets and lies, family and friendships.

"One Day With You" by Shari Low is an intense and emotional story that will definitely elicit a range of emotions from readers. The author does a great job of exploring the complexities of relationships and the impact of secrets and lies on those closest to us. The plot keeps readers on the edge of their seats, wondering what will happen next.
On the downside, I found that there were too many characters to keep track of, and at times it felt like the story was trying to do too much. Additionally, the plot felt a bit too similar to Collen Hoover's "Regretting You" and I felt like the execution of the plot was better in that novel.
Overall, I would say that "One Day With You" has potential, but for me personally it fell short. It's definitely an engaging read with some sweet moments, but I couldn't help feeling that it could have been better.
If you're looking for a novel that will elicit a lot of emotions (specifically anger at its morally corrupt caracters) this is definitely worth a read, but if you're looking for something truly original, you might want to look elsewhere.

I giggle-snorted and smirked my way through this delightfully penned missive. I adored these characters but my favorites were the well-seasoned Val and Nancy. I enjoyed their amusing escapades and rib-tickling banter, reveled in their confidence, found great pleasure in keeping them company, and felt a sense of familiarity as if I’d personally known them for years.
Shari Low is an all-time favorite and gifted storyteller. Her clever writing style has never failed to draw me into her engaging tales with an easy and smooth flow of perfectly chosen words. While the characters’ lives weren’t all sunshine and light, heart-squeezing issues were deftly tackled with agility and grace.

This book was packed full of emotion. Anger, sadness, joy and acceptance. It grabbed me from the very first page and didn’t let up until I finished it. A brilliant read. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

One day in the lives of two couples and a widow who live outside of Glasgow; a day that will change them forever. I am not going to give more of a synopsis for those of you who do not like spoilers. If you want to know more specifics of the story, you can check it out on Goodreads or Amazon.
Each chapter focuses on the alternating perspectives of the main characters. It is poignant, bittersweet, tragic (but not maudlin), and hopeful. It demonstrates how you can make a family from those who surround and support you.
While “women’s fiction” is not my go-to genre, I liked this book a lot more than I thought I would; I didn’t want to put it down. I particularly enjoyed the humorous bantering among the widow and her friends, women “of a certain age.” Shari Low weaves a great tale. My first five star read of the year.

Saw that 'some' friends gave this book good reviews - It was audio on my Scribd (Scottish accents and all). I thought it was a fierce depressing book. Had a theme that I never read in my books (or I try to avoid).
Found a couple of the main characters selfish arses and another few of them a bit too understanding and 'perfect'. The writing wasn't bad and I might check out more by this author but I was not impressed - I just felt I had to keep reading to see if I thought was going to happen, did happen - it kinda did.

The more I read from this author, the bigger a fan I become!
Tress Walker is pregnant; her husband is taking one last work trip before the birth; but when Tress goes into labour, Max can't be found - he isn't where she thought he was. Noah Clark heads off to work completely unaware that his wife, Anya, has been lying to him while Nancy, a recently widowed friend of both couples is preparing for a school reunion - but is she talking herself into or out of it?
I always have high hopes for a Shari Low novel; her characters make me laugh like no others. There is a depth to this novel which produced a few tears along with the giggles. Such a lot going on and all story lines intertwined beautifully. I really cannot recommend this one highly enough - it is unmissable and so easily gets all five singing and dancing stars!

I don’t like to give 1 star but this book just was not for me. Really awful plot, like a poor soap opera and without any reality in the characters. The only redeeming feature is that this was a free read on kindle.
Ostensibly the book is about two couples, where wife 1 is pregnant and husband 1 is having a long standing affair with the wife 2. On the day wife 1 goes into labour, husband 1 and wife 2 have car accident together, the first doctor on the scene is the husband 2, who clocks his wife and pal in the car when they are meant to be elsewhere. Wife 1 is in labour accompanied by two 60 year old neighbours, both with backstories including husbands with Alzheimer’s/fatal melanoma, teenage betrayals, school reunions to go to where widowed one will meet long lost first boyfriend (keep up!) both are useless with technology, clearly intended to be comedic but are just caricatures of the worst kind. All the hospital staff are fabulous and caring, no one is overworked, everyone has time to sit with labouring wife 1 and husband 2 has a hard job keeping his angel’s wings inside his scrubs as he flits between critically injured wife, husband 1 in ICU and wife 1 in labour. Luckily they are all in the same hospital. Baby born, named after husband 2 with middle name of husband 1. Long, long story short, husband 1 dies, wife 2 lives, comedy oldie widow acquires new partner at reunion who was best pals with her dead husband. 8 months later, husband 2 and wife 2 are divorced and the merry crew; wife 1, husband 2 plus new squeeze, comedy oldies and both their partners (remember, one with Alzheimer’s, one met at school reunion) have miraculously sorted out all post death and divorce paperwork and are heading off on holiday where they will meet husband 1’s parents who don’t seem to care about his death, they’re too interested in hosting swingers parties in Cyprus. (Didn’t I mention that before?). Too many strands, like Love Actually on a really bad trip, with a one-dimensional cast from (insert any soap opera here). Honestly, if at the end wife 1 had woken up and found husband one in the shower I wouldn’t have been surprised.

I hope Tress's little boy doesn't inherit his father's sociopathy.
Noah, my heart felt all of his agony and heartbreak over his discovery of his wife and best friend's cheating. A betrayal that lasted 5 years and that was only discovered because of a tragedy. He didn't deserve this and neither did Tress. But it's always the good people who trust others who end up broken by life.
But I ended up enjoying the read and stayed hooked until the end.

My Thoughts: This book grabbed me from the first sentence through the end. Unique premise of this all takes place in a day. When Tress waves her husband off to work, she has no idea that she will go into labor and cannot locate Max. Max’s best friend, Noah, also has no idea that his wife, Anya, has been lying to him. Finally, the neighbor between the couples, Nancy, has the chance at meeting her first love again. You travel along all of these characters for a twenty-four period of life, some altering events, that breaths a sliver of hopefulness.
The story is narrated by the various characters, Tress, Max, Noah, and Nancy, from their POV, which I loved. While there is a host of characters, their stories bleed together. You feel for some of the characters, dislike others, and yell at some of them. Tress and Noah go through heartbreaking events, while Nancy and Val keeps a lightheartedness in the story. The characters were well developed, with depth, some banter, full of emotion, and just creatively done. The author’s writing style was complex, beautiful, funny, deeply emotional, and kept me engaged.
This book was a true rollercoaster, but the good kind. The cleansing kind. I laughed, I cried, I was sad, and I was happy. This is a poignant, yet hopeful story of love, loss, and just getting through life. I would recommend picking up.

One Day With You was such an emotional book, masterfully written.
Told over the course of 24 hours, 2 couples have their lives radically changed. As summed up on Goodreads "One Day with You - two fateful goodbyes, two unexpected hellos, and 24 hours that change everything." I can't say it any better than that.
There are numerous perspectives in this book and several main characters. I thought it would be confusing but the author started with a character overview section, which must have helped because I was never confused. I think she named the characters well enough too to eliminate confusion.
This is a story full of heartbreak and joy. I didn't want to put it down. I was worried about the ending, how would she wrap up this complicated love story, but she nailed it.

A real tearjerker from Shari Low. So many emotions as we spend the day with Tress, Nancy and Val.
I loved Nancy and Val’s relationship- and the support and love they both provided Tress was beautiful.
The story is told over the space of just one day and it’s difficult to imagine how much actually happens in that 24 hour period, but Shari low manages to capture the highs and lows of life.
It’s difficult to review this one without spoilers so I’ll leave it by saying it’s one that will break your heart and then slowly make it whole again.

3.75. Enjoyable book about a woman who goes into labor but cannot get in touch with her husband who is supposed to be at a work conference. The only thing I didn’t like was the conversation in the head of the husband. It drove me crazy. But I absolutely loved the two women neighbors in their 60’s. Emotional and good book.

Note: I received an ARC through Boldwood Books and Netgalley for an honest review.
Triggers: cheating, death by skin cancer, dementia, pregnancy difficulties, drunk driving death, menopause, death by car crash.
This was an entirely, depressing, complex and sadly true novel, for people who know someone or have experienced the tragedies, highs and lows in their life, as such the characters do in this novel.
I wish I could say I fell into either category, but I do not, at this time.
We have the story with several plotlines going on - each character is facing a huge decision, or major upturn within 24 hours of their day. Before that, all is going smoothly and as comfortably as life in small towns does.
It was exciting, relatable, perhaps heartwarming to read the story at first, but as time went on, I could only curse the characters, and the impending depression that I ended up dealing with, after having finished the book.
I did get the emotional aspect of the book, the realism as well, but the stupid decisions I did not, and some of the ignorance the characters held about the people they knew.
So as much as I would like to say that the addictive writing and wonderful characters, plus emotionally tinged plotlines got me - they only did for the first half. Rest of the half was spent debating whether I should hurl myself out of this room and into a cave to cry and be frustrated for forever, or throw the book into outer space.
Spoiler alert: none of this happened, but I did lose a lot of sleep, thanks to this sad heap of a novel. So much for the 2 hours and 20 mins I spent on this novel that I am never getting back.
Sigh...I expected a lot from this, but so far I only learnt that no one becomes happy except for one elderly couple in this book. That is it. And that life is only but one sad metaphor of existentialism.
That is all I got. Sigh.

At the same time, Max’s best friend Noah is saying good bye to his wife, Anya, who is also heading off on a business trip. When Anya accidentally leaves her laptop at home after fighting with Noah before she left, Noah decides to take a look at it and finds something’s that he never expected and decides to go track Anya down and confront her. But on the way, he comes upon an accident, and that accident turns his world upside down.
While Tress is in labor her neighbors Nancy and Val have been watching over her and taking good care of her until Noah gets back and meets her at the hospital.

Wtf. The writing was terrible enough (repetitive, with shallow and also repetitive vocabulary and cringe-inducing dialogues, etc) and I basically skimmed and skipped all the Nancy chapters. But I stayed for Noah. Then the ending was extremely depressing, and NO HEA! The story was very clearly going one way, but in the only way that mattered, it didn't end that way, so the title of the book makes no sense!! In the end, the majority of the characters are emotionally and/or physically scarred and alone but the author tries to convince us that they're better off that way. Uh, okay.

Not my usual choice of book but I’m glad I read it. Lots of twists and turns . Val and Nancy had me laughing out loud . Quite a gentle read had me gripped from the start . Would recommend
