The first seventy-two hours could determine who lives or who dies.
Keme Lopez needs to prepare his family for the apocalypse that he understands has already begun. Hesitation kills, and those who are slow to believe might not survive the first wave of anarchy. He must convince those he loves that this time the disaster is happening.
When all of the lower orbital satellites stop working, everyone is plunged into an apocalyptic world. Isolated in the small Texas town of Alpine, the Chihuahuan desert provides a natural buffer against a world gone mad. But some see the collapse as a chance to grab power, allies, and resources. Those people, left unchecked, could usher in the destruction of the place Keme calls home.
Whatever steps they take now, or fail to take, will determine their chances of survival as the world is covered in a Veil of Mystery.

Veil of Mystery ( Kesser Effect Prequel) Vannetta Chapman Wow and wow, What is happing to the world? Would you be prepared if the electric, Cell phones, no banking, could not buy gas for cars, and no way to get your medicine you need all went down? Read in one setting, could not put it down . I kept thinking I have got to go to the grocery store and the bank. This is a prequel go some mysterious happening going on. This had me on the edge of my seat and starting to do some serious thinking.I received a copy of this book. All opinions are my own
This prequel has me so excited for the series! I was invested from the first line and didn't set my Kindle down until I reached the last page. Not gonna lie, I was kinda freaked out with how realistic this felt. I could totally see this actually happening. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of book one! I received an early copy of this book. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.
I received the prequel to Ms. Chapman's upcoming Kessler Effect series. The introduction to some of the main characters was intriguing and the story line start up is mysterious. Can't wait for the first book to show up on my Kindle next month. Bravo!!
Something’s happening in Texas. What’s going on? This is a good prequel in that it gives you just enough to make you want to continue reading the series! I have all the ebooks now, so I will continue reading! I enjoyed this short novella!
A compelling prequel to this dystopian series by a talented and versatile author! This isn't my usual reading genre, but I'm already well into book 1 and can't wait to see where the story is leading.
This book is quite good. Well written, great plot. My only complaint is the length - I really need more of this!! However, in that length you really start to connect with the characters and there is a connection with what is happening. I will definitely be reading more from Chapman, I need to know how this turns out!
This is a very interesting prequel to a new series for Vannetta Chapman. This book isn't the normal genre that I have read from Vannetta. It really makes you think of what could happen in our world if the power went out and all the other things this entails. I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series.
So what happened? Plane drops out the sky, stock market loses 80 per cent, internet crashes and a train wreck in town. Is this the big one that conspiracy theorists were talking about or just a really bad day? This is a small glimpse into the book. This took no time to read and left you wanting more.
Keme Lopez, a forty-something year old computer repairman, is enjoying a normal Tuesday morning when a series of events convince him something is seriously wrong with all things electronic. In a matter of hours, the remote town of Alpine Texas is on its own to survive without electricity, phone service, food delivery, and outside help. Keme takes action before most and secures what he can in terms of the necessities of life, but will it be enough?
In this short, excellently crafted prequel, Ms. Chapman introduces us to a man and his family who must overcome challenges, great and small, in a world turned on its head. The characters are diverse and the story believable as the world unravels before their eyes.
Don’t expect the full meal of a completed story. This is but the appetizer that precedes a series of novels. Prepare to ask yourself, “What would I do if faced with a similar situation?”
Well done, Vanetta Chapman. You’ve shown again why you are a USA Today bestselling author.
I read Chapman's earlier dystopian series, so I was excited to read her latest. I really enjoy this genre, even though some books are a bit scary in how the premise could actually come to pass. And some of the scenes in this book, such as the grocery store run and stocking up on non-perishables is something we've actually experienced over the past few years.
Chapman's writing quickly pulls the reader in, and the pace keeps them turning the pages. This is a great prequel to start the upcoming series.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review.
Literally couldn’t put this down - had to read it in one sitting. My heart kept cautioning me against getting attached to this sensible, likeable guy, Keme, and his poetry- loving wife, Lucy…an apocalyptic story is probably not going to end well for everybody. My next thought was to go out on a major grocery run, even though our fruit cellar is well-stocked with non-perishables. Chapman sure has a way of raising my blood pressure! Looks like the the beginning of another great dystopian series. I received a digital copy of this prequel from the author and was not required to post a review.
An intriguing beginning to a new series for me. Preparing for an Apocalypse is a difficult and dangerous as well. Heme is trying his hardest to do all he can for his family. Unfortunately, there are those that don’t believe. How will he fix this. Intriguing, lots of action that kept me reading.
This very short prequel to the Kessler Effect series gives you just enough to peak your interest. Would we be, or could we be prepared if all the digital, tech, electrical things we’ve come to depend on were no longer functioning or available? A scarily, thought provoking scenario.
I enjoyed the characters and the storyline wasn't as over the top like some of the other books out there. Still gives enough mystery to keep things interesting.
I thoroughly enjoyed this prequel to the Kessler Effect series. It’s very easy to read and really I liked the main characters that we follow Keme and Lucy. We were introduced to some of their family and I’m looking forward to starting the next book Veil of Anarchy.
This is the prequel to the series, Kessler Effect. It's only 51 pages and hastily put together, it seems. The pharmacist was Jack in one sentence and Ray in the next. The son flipped back and forth from Paco to Pablo. But the groundwork was laid for a good apocalyptic series. Network down, electricity down, plane down, train down, but oddly enough, vehicles are still running. Can't wait to see what's next.
Not sure of what caused the internet, cell service, and stock market to crash, but Keme has theories. A train has crashed, and electric service keeps going out. He and his wife immediately go shopping for food, medical supplies, and ammo. But they are not sure what might happen. Good intro to the series.
Author Vannetta Chapman begins a new series with this prequel, A Veil of Mystery. The Kessler Effect series is a new genre for Chapman, as it fits in disaster fiction. This prequel kept me on the edge of my seat, so I’m looking forward to the next book, Veil of Anarchy.
This is a fast paced read about things that really have happened and things that could happen in the future. It’s not beyond the realm of reality at all. Give it a read!
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
Firstly, I must thank Vannetta and Kristy for my ARC of this book. This was a break from my usual reading genres and what I expect this author to write. I am fascinated that she can so easily between genres and be so great in them. Her writing is always exceptional and this book was no different. Being a short prequel to the Kessler Effect series I am excited to read the first book, Veil of Anarchy. I rated this 4.5 stars but unfortunately Goodreads doesn't accept half stars. I was able to read this book in one sitting and I am sure it will appeal to fans of dystopian fiction and also to fans of Vannetta Chapman. It made me think...how much we rely on technology and how sorely we are unprepared for a major disaster/apocalypse . Let's think of the Pandemic as a prequel but we were lucky to still have internet, tv, radio, phones and all the technology we have come to rely on. Thanks for such a thought provoking read in such a little book.
What has happened to the world? What efforts would you take in order to be safe? Internet out, cell phones down, ATM machines not working. This prequel sets the scene for a mysterious happening. Great story that keeps the reader on the edge of the seat. I received a complimentary copy of the prequel. No review was required.
