I have such mixed feelings about this book. The author does such an incredible job of putting her characters through it. She knows how to pull on all the feelings. I screamed and cried and for a good chunk was royally confused. My brain just can't keep track of so many characters, powers, races, gods, ect. I wish so much I could hold it all in my head because I know a lot of it is going to be very important in the last book and I'm worried I'll be even more confused.

Scarlett and Sorin were really solid in the book for the most part. I absolutely despise that Sorin lost his powers. I mean he's alive so there is that, but watching him grieve that loss was painful! When Scarlett drew from him was one of the sweetest most tender moments I may have ever read. I did not agree with Sorin on Talwyn. Scarlett should have been allowed to murder that bitch. I do think it was very hypocritical of him because we all know he would kill without thought if anyone hurt Scarlett.

Cassius and Cyrus man. These two drove me insane. The constant tug and pull between them. I completely loved watching both be broken but trying so hard to be able to put the other back together.

I hate Callan. I hate him. He is a boring POV to read from. He is whiney and annoying. Tava deserves SO much better and I really wish she had found happiness elsewhere.

Now I'm going to write myself a little reminder so that when the next book comes out maybe I'll be able to remember all the characters and what happened.

Scarlett and crew start the book by traveling to Avonleya. Sorin is back from the dead but is slowly loosing his powers. It was the cost of brining him back. Callan (The human prince) is reeling from watching his parents and best friends die by the hand of Alaric (The main bad dude). Instead of turning to his new lover Tava, he chooses to pull away. Tava makes many speeches about how she is not waiting for him and she is moving on but never actually does.

Cyrus is Sorin's 2nd I believe. He lost his first lover a male name Merrick when he was super young. He also lost his twin flame. He is haunted and can't sleep at night so Scarlett's soul mate and guardian, Cassius stays with him. They have a friendship that is quite obviously moving into something more.

They arrive at Avonleya and meet Scarlett's long lost brother and king, Cethin. Cethin's 2nd is a man named Razik. He is the grandson of a god... I think. He can shift into a dragon. We find out him and Cassius are cousins? But they because Cassius Father basically raised Razik they're more like brothers. Cassius also learns he can partially shift into a dragon. He has the wings and the fire. Also maybe scales.

Talwayn finally gets her head out of her Ass and realizes she is being hella used by the Maran Lords. But of course it's too late. She still thinks Sorin is dead and spends a ton of the book just throwing herself a huge pity party. She realizes Tarik is not her twin flame and has been using her since the beginning. She tends of finding Ashtine (Queen of winds) is pregnant with Briar's Twins (Briar is the king of the water court). Alaric needs royal Water blood to access the prison so he can set the Sorceress free. Who I think is a goddess... or something???

Scarlett is able to bring down the wards on the continent because she finds the two missing mortal Heirs. Drake, Tava's brother, is the heir to one kingdom. The other is a mortal I think with the last name Hall who was hiding out in Avonleya this whole time.

Nuri is in this book. She is a vampire and Scarlett's friend but ended up swearing allegiance to Alaric for unknown reasons. She also is the countessa or ruler of the Night Children.

Juliette shows up while they're fighting after taking down the wards. She is the oracle and her mother who was a witch is killed by Callan during the fight.

Eliza, Sorin's General, is severely injured during this fight. Razik and her clearly have some sort of love affair going on. But somehow no one notices.

Cethin informs Scarlett their mother is the goddess Saylah. I don't know exactly how that affects Scarlet but it seems important.

Alaric ends up finding Ashtine and holding her hostage to try and get Scarlett to negotiate with him. Cyrus and Neve who is the 3rd in the water court stay with her and Alaric. Alaric takes them down to the prison to see the Sorceress. He leaves poor Cyrus there to be mentally tutored by her. She just plays back all his terrible memories to him.

Cyrus was suppose to become Cassius's source but he kept refusing. I think Cassius was worried about tying Cyrus down and also was worried he would resent him eventually. Because Scarlett can no longer pull from Sorin she will pull from Cassius. So he needs a source ASAP. But Cyrus is tuck in the prison so they're trying to find someone else to be his source. They ask Eliza but she advises she is already Raziks source. Cassius is super upset because he really doesn't want anyone else to be his source but Cryus isn't an option.

Tava ends up sacrificing herself to save Ashtine and her babies. She has sex with Callan, then disappears like a thief in the night. Callan blames Scarlett even though it was Tava's choice. Her brother Drake also went with her to sacrifice himself.

Scarlett draws from Sorin one last time and their twin flame mark disappears. She is pissed and goes to see her Goddess mother so she can bring back Sorin's powers. That is how it ended.

Rayner is part of Sorin's court. He is the ash ryder. We get some of his backstory. On the southern Isle's him and a bunch of other people were tortured and bred to make more powerful fae. He killed everyone on the island. Alaric is apparently the son of the ruler of that island. Alaric is there searching for a lock. The lock opens the mirror gates so he could travel through them.

You are mine, and I am yours.”
“All the way through the darkness.”

1. I could not get a breather throughout this book.
2. Cyrus and Cassius were the stars of this book.
3. Another painful cliffhanger.
4. This book felt a tad overwhelming at times, not necessarily a bad thing but it felt packed or perhaps I did not have the emotional capacity with how much the author squeezes my heart and keeps me on edge.

I can't believe I have one more book left.

UGH! This series is killing my soul. I effing LOVE the concept, and when the author is writing her own creations instead of churning out some blended version of ACOTAR/TOG, I am absolutely mystified. But 600+ pages of nonsense, arguments, BLAND sex, recycled phrases, and absolute rambling with just the odd gripping chapter, is not enough to make this the masterpiece it wants to be.

Once again, I have to read the next instalment because I simply NEED to know this super secretive information that is the proverbial carrot dangled in front of the reader to keep them committed (imprisoned) to slogging through each subsequent tome. Dear lord, at this point I guess what’s one more book?

The side characters are the absolute tits, but they’re being used as a backdrop instead of giving them any development or weaving them into the dialogue. Please, give me more Eliza quips and take out 30% of Sorin and Scarlett’s interactions - FOR THE LOVE OF GOD(S). Her potential love story arc introduced in the final chapters was an absolute cheap shot btw. It’s the only thing keeping me afloat right now.

Oh my! Have I mentioned that I loooooove tgis series!? The characters - flaws and all, the writing, the world that got a whole lot bigger and the package as a whole. I can't wait to read The Reaper and the finale and to somehow get my hands on all those bonus chapters which are kind of hard to come by if you don't live in the US and use different devices for ebooks. Or I'm just too stupid to know which one will be a fit for mine. Anywaaaaaay: if you like fantasy novels, try this series! ❤

I only gave this book 2 stars because of the side characters but even those are getting boring.

Erase all the temper tantrums, character ramblings, and pissing matches, then the series wouldn’t have needed to be 5 books long.

I'm not sure what went wrong with this book, but it was definitely down there with my least favorite of this 5 book series.

The first half of the book was slow and boring. The last half was a different setting, but also slow and boring.

I'm getting really fed up with how often and the myriad of ways Scarlett is described as being "super duper powerful" but then she can barely kill a handful of people and make a few shadow animals without being so depleted of power she can't even function. I appreciate the checks and balances of magic wielding in this book, but it's too much to the point of being unrealistic. Scarlett grew up her whole life without magic- without even KNOWING she had magic to begin with. She was trained as the deadliest assassin on the continent, but when her magic is too low, suddenly she is incapable of using a simple blade to kill anyone or to protect the people she cares for. It's bizarre.

It's also bizarre for her to be using her magic in such superfluous ways during training or when she is trying to get her revenge on Talwyn, when her Source is rapidly running out of magic whenever he has to refill her ridiculous uses of power. Talk about selfish and childish. I'm not even sure she uses her Fae gifts anymore except for a couple of times. I mean, why use the only parts of your magic that regenerates without having to leech off your weakening twin flame and husband?

Cyrus and Cassian's (oops, sorry, I mean Cassius's, because copying ACOTAR isn't obvious at all) whole dynamic doesn't make sense to me. I don't understand why Cassius is fighting everything so hard. Cyrus, sure, that makes sense. But Cassius? Nah. The conflict there just feels like a lame way to bring drama. Take a Source, dude. Eliza seemed to manage it without any forethought whatsoever. Why can't you?

Either way, at the end of the day... I'm obsessed with nearly every single character. I'm a little salty that Briar, Sawyer, Neve, and Nakoa all kind of get pushed to the background after book 2 and I barely learn anything new or personal about them... but, in general, I am loving the whole crew. Razik is my new favorite character in this series, and I'm definitely here for the HEA.

However, I can’t help but mention that the book is too long, too slow, and repetitive; not much happened at all.

This series just keeps getting better! I know I said this with the last book, but Melissa continues to improve her storytelling and world building, to the point where I need an out of book world map & some lineage charts, and I am loving it. My favorite character and our newest POV got his start in a bonus chapter at the end of the last book and I adore him. The best ship is on major slow burn 🔥, but the tensions are building and I cannot wait for them to boil over. The end of this book is absolute chaos, so buckle up. I think that when we all started reading Lady of Darkness, we never dreamed it would turn into the epic five book fantasy it has. We never dreamed that we'd get this attached, this betrayed, this heartbroken and I'm scared, but excited to see what happens when we finally have to say goodbye. "Hope even when it's pointless," or something like that. 😉

Lovedddd first 50 or so pages. Couldn’t put it down during the last 50 or so pages. Everything in the middle was boring AF. So much info dumping and pulling from TOG, ACOTAR, and FBAA. The parts of this series that I have loved were original ideas. The parts that I have hated were basically the author trying to be someone else. I’ll read book 5 bc I need to see how things turn out for my beloved side characters but I just hope it’s original and not this wish.com type of stuff.

I loved this book. This is probably my favourite one of them all at the moment. It was packed full of action and adventure and started right back to where the last book ended before skipping ahead to 3 weeks later.

It was nice to see the couples that had been established, but it was nice to see new ones developed and potentially new ones I would never have thought of Eliza and Razik... I'm looking at you 👀

But I honestly loved the fact that we got Cyrus pov and was nice to have in the addition of the book. It was great to see his thoughts and feelings even though I just wanted to give him a huge hug at times. It was nice to see him potentially having someone there for him but broke my heart multiple times. I am going to be rooting for him so much in the next book. I just hope he is okay.

It was a super addicting and fun read and I can not wait to read the novella and to finish the series. Let's hope everyone is okay at the end 🥲

Stress and pain are all I know with the way things were left off for all the characters by the end of this book. Scarlett and Sorin, Cyrus and Cassius, Briar and Ashtine, Callan and Tava.

On the plus side, I can finally relate to Talwyn more, now that she finally pulled her head out of her a**.

I expect a happy ending for all of them in the last book.

One thing I noticed, that irks me with this author’s writing is the repetitive use of describing words such as “darkness”. It is as if the author runs out of ways to describe Scarlet and her darkness. It’s like she’s telling me she’s dark but I want to be shown the darkness.

4.75☆ rounded up
Best one yet! The series progressively gets better, this book made me sad at the ending though with Sorin losing his power, the twin flame and source bond.
Quick little random thoughts
- I'm glad Callen and Tava have each other now, well sort of.
- Scarlett is big woman on campus with all her titles.
- Talwyn has made a decent amount of growth during these books, it's fun to look back at the first couple books and see what her personality was like then vs how she is behaving now in this book. She definitely got humbled.
- I'm stressing about Cyrus being in the prison and Cassius not having a source and his love.
- I enjoyed meeting the new characters in this book especially Razik since i have already read Rain of Shadows and Endings, plus i just love him. I feel like i need tonre read that series now though because now that I know some of the back story on these gods/goddesses, and the other beings plus relationships with characters and such it would put things in a different light. I know you're supposed to be able to read them in any order but I really think Lady Of Shadows should come first.
- a big lead up to the last book and honestly I'm here for it, you go get your man's powers back and kick some ass girl.

Okay now we’re getting somewhere. This may be a TOG rip-off but I’m invested. And now I think I need Eliza x Razik more than I need to breathe, not to be dramatic.

I am a slut for multiple POVs and multiple slow burns so this book fulfilled all my wishes and hopes and dreams.

I have been following this series since the just after the second book came out and it has continued to wow me at every turn. In my review of the first book I said it reminds me of A Court of Thorns and Roses, From Blood and Ash, and Throne of Glass- potentially following the tropes to a fault (I did not fault it tho because the tropes are great and I eat them up) This book took a deviation from that and really came into its own paving, new tropes for books down the line to follow.

The characters are still frustrating, but I feel like they are becoming more and more developed with each installment and you’re willing to brush off faults at this point. I love the new and developing relationships in this series. We have a set cast of characters we love (even when they are dumb and make bad calls) and it’s fun to see them interact with new characters and show of their personality in different ways.

My experience reading this may tell you how addicted I am to this series- I’m in a studio apartment with a roommate. She goes to bed and it’s lights out. I’m only 200 pages in but I can’t stop, so I go into the bathroom where I can turn the light on. I spend the next 3 hours in the bathtub reading with a couple towels to try to make it comfy before realizing that it is very very late and trying to go to bed. I lay there staring at the ceiling for another hour trying to figure out what’s going to happen next. Wake up for work the next morning and spend every break I can reading the book until I finish it and have to go take a walk to process what just happened.

Lady of Embers.
Another brilliant addition to the Lady of Darkness series. Melissa has once again managed to capture the charm and uniqueness in every single chapter, including personalities of the new and old of the series.

Melissa has explored emotional ranges which has had my own emotions in turmoil on whether to love or hate someone. It is a beautiful trauma which hurts so much you’d believe it is a real life story. She has given her characters an essence of grace, poise and a little bit psycho which personally I find endearing.

“It is time for dreams and stars to meet” when I first read this line it gave me chills. When I reread it, it gave me chills. No matter how many times I read this line, I will ALWAYS get chills.

Lady of Embers.
Is there spice? Yes.
Emotional damage? Most definitely.
Revenge
Sorrow
Pain
Heartache????
Hahhahahahahha good luck.

All in all Melissa’s books continue to best the previous and if this one is phenomenal. I will need a dictionary to find a better word for the next book.

Well, that was boring. I LOVE the series, but this one book just no.
Something happens. They fight over it. Someone gets really hurt. She is depressed. They have sex. She is better. Something happens. They fight... repeat and repeat and repeat.
Not even the wonderful secondary characters can save this one. And they are definitely the best in the book and the only reason I kept reading. There is a ton of lore dropped throughout but still has the same writing problems as in the previous books: the mental processes are hard to follow and if it is on purpose it doesn't work. The characters float in space despite spaces being often described.

DNF at 18% because I just can’t do it anymore.

Lady of Darkness definitely gave me Throne of Glass vibes, but I felt like it was going in a different direction so I kept going. Sadly, these books read as nearly identical to TOG/ACOTAR specifically ACOMAF. There are way too many similarities to just ignore it and keep reading.

This series has been such an incredible ride so far, and I’ve been loving every minute. Lady of Embers has more than lived up to the hype and expectations that the first three books have laid out. It’s incredible that four books into the series, the main characters can still grow, change, and surprise readers. Also, the range of emotions Roehrich is able to elicit in readers is impressive. The scene between Scarlett and Soren with the power transfer was so emotional and beautifully written. Cassius and Cyrus were definite stand outs in this book, and I love their characters so much. You can tell that the ending of the series is near with how this book positions the different characters and sets them up for the final showdown in the next book. As a result, there are just so many things that happen in this book. The plot felt like it moved so fast in this book, it was hard to accept one thing happening before you’re having to immediately pivot to the next thing. That’s not a bad thing, it just made for a very intense book. I once again read this via audiobook, and like the others it was superb. I highly recommend reading these via audio to experience the incredible narration.

"You set my world on fire just by being in it. You don't need magic to do so."

I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I equally love and loathe so many characters. I've wanted to throw this book across the room, and yet I can't put it down when I pick it up. This book was extremely repetitive. I grew disinterested in some of the newer couples introduced. They rehashed the same arguments with little to no resolution. To make matters worse, two of my favourite couples were on opposing sides. I need the reunion of a lifetime between them OR ELSE. And yet after that same rant, I find myself itching to start the next book.

My god! There are lot of things happening here.🤸🏻‍♂️

1. Scarlet and Sorin situation is a rollercoaster.
2. Cyrus and Cassius situation is a push and pull.
3. Tava, Ashtine and Eliza. I love them do not ask why
4. Nuri doesn't disappoint me. I like her behaviour and how she is sorry not sorry
5. Talwyn is difficult, but i have trust in her for the last book.
6. Callan is someone i never liked and i still do not find his reasoning and character likeable

The plot is great, action packed and there is another cliffhanger. Thw writing is good, but sometimes it is too dense in my opinion. 🌟💞
