Prior to his first professional work, Tynion was a student of Scott Snyder's at Sarah Lawrence College. A few years later, he worked as for Vertigo as Fables editor Shelly Bond's intern. In late 2011, with DC deciding to give Batman (written by Snyder) a back up feature, Tynion was brought in by request of Snyder to script the back ups he had plotted. Tynion would later do the same with the Batman Annual #1, which was also co-plotted by Snyder. Beginning in September 2012, with DC's 0 issue month for the New 52, Tynion will be writing Talon, with art by Guillem March. In early 2013 it was announced that he'd take over writing duties for Red Hood and the Outlaws in April.

Tynion is also currently one of the writers in a rotating team in the weekly Batman Eternal series.

Although I understood Erica Slaughter when she said she was tired, I found Something is Killing the Children #27 to be disappointing.

During those three to four pages, I frequently turned to the cover to make sure I was reading the correct comic. It was unclear where the story took up from where we left off Something is Killing the Children #26. I would have rather that they continue where they left off before having what I believe to be a flashback midway through the narrative.

I find it disappointing that this is how the year ended for this story.

It doesn't seem like much is going to Erica's favor. I thought when Riqui was remembering her girlfriend asking her to protect Gabi, she would think that Erica would be the one to protect them. But she has known the sheriff longer and can't actually see what Erica and Gabi do.

I don't know if there is going to be a showdown at the station. If the monster can be changed to another form with mirrors, maybe fighting there would work if there's a one way mirror.

Does the duplicitype know that Erica will kill it? Was it just afraid of her because of their battle? Will Cutter be upset that this is what the duplicitype is afraid of or is that what she wanted?

I didn't like the art for the flashbacks. It had so much darkness and shadow to it. I suppose it might have been the point, to change the art style to show that it was a flashback. But I understood just from the context. The color palette change too was a nice indicator. If the shadows just weren't there I would have liked it more. The full panel for the duplicitype copying Erica was great.

Riqui gets a call from Thomas and she has a flashback, talking to someone about their cancer diagnosis and that they're stage four. Her name is Fernanda and she was her girlfriend. Fernanda mentions that her sister got pregnant by Santiago again and Gabi's barely walking. She tells Riqui to watch her family when she's gone.

Riqui comes home, tells Gabi to get her bag, and that they're going to the police. She tells her that she's doing this to protect her since Gabi was now at two murder scenes. Riqui says that Erica is coming too and if she's not, she can leave. Erica overheard and says she doesn't have time for this. Erica tells her that the monster is growing stronger and hungrier. She says that the monster isn't very good at copying what people look like at first. Might be missing a face or have too many arms. But as they feed, they get better at it. The next step is to figure out where the monster is. Riqui says that they'll go to the station and tell Thomas enough to make him believe, but they need to keep Gabi out of it. Erica tells her that they need Gabi. If she was the one who manifested it, they can lure it out with her. Riqui doesn't want Gabi to be in danger, but she's in danger regardless since the monster is out there. Octo tells Erica she's putting them all at risk with Cutter on the way. Erica says she'll run when she kills the monster. Octo rhetorically asks her if she has some kind of death wish, but Erica just says she's tired.

Cutter has tied up a kid and her doll says the monster is near. Cutter is on the phone with Thomas and he must have told her that Erica will be coming down to the station. She said she will see him soon and thanks him. Cutter tells the child that he's been bad and the monster knows every bad thing he's done. His parents aren't going to save him, they won't even know he's gone until it's too late. He starts to cry and the monster kills him. Her doll tells her that it's time, she needs to have the monster be in a frenzy so it can't finish eating the boy. Cutter pulls on a cord, which brings up a bunch of mirrors facing the duplicitype. The doll says the duplicitype will change into what it fears the most, the thing that will do it harm. It changes into Erica.

Rounding up. Unless this chick plays a larger role in Erica's future, we really don't need the back story we get that takes up the entire opener. I get the sentiment. But the reason - tells/shows us why this lady is there for Gabi - isn't necessary. Through all the gore and murders, she's been there. Having a good reason is a safe assumption and saying why easily could've been done in a few present day panels as they drive to the police station or to where the monster is. All this really does is prove that the pacing is slowing down to milk the cash cow (which is also clearly happening with House of Slaughter and I've dropped that filler title completely). I already buy this in comics and trades, but if this continues, I'll drop the comic. It reads better as a trade anyway. In good developments ("good" being subjective and contextual), we see Cutter and Dolly in action, Erica with her hair down - surprisingly worth it, and Erica with...well, a spoiler...and *that* is why I rounded up.

For some reason this issue seemed quick, short, and easy. Gabi and Erica were quick to comply with going to the sheriffs office and Cutter performed some twisted ritual that made the duplicitype manifest into looking exactly like Erica. So I am assuming it will kill and leave some victims alive and they will identify Erica as the killer.

Riqui’s flashback at the beginning was sentimental and kinda made me laugh thinking about where Gabi gets her behavior and attitude from.

I really can't get enough of this series from the dark and twisted beasts killing the children to Erica Slaughter as a character, and all of the creepy, moody, revenge-seeking masks.

In this one the walls are closing in on Erica as she's bleeding and a little desperate but still hellbent on winning.

I’m worried for Erica’s well-being in the next several, or multiple comic issues. She’s still pretty injured, very tired, and on top of all of that, Miss Cutter did something I cannot comprehend but it will make things even more difficult for Erica.

This was perfectly fine just so damn short. So the monster is now an Erica doppelgänger, let the chaos ensue. I did like the flashback though…

These issues seem so short when you're enjoying them so much. Another great one.

Cool ending, but most of it wasn't that fun to read, a big detour in my opinion!

Great chapter

The character art hit really hard for me. I enjoyed the surprise too. I wish these chapters were a little longer.
