It's hard to find beginning readers that are really funny and clever--this one gets it right. It's 3 chapters in a graphic-novel hybrid style, each one telling an episode in the lives of two Best Buddies: a cat and a dog. Great appeal for any kid who loves either or both!
First sentence: This is Sniff. Hello. Woof! This is Scratch. Nice to meet you! Meow! They are best buddies. Well, sometimes.
Premise/plot: There are three stories in this early reader. There are color coded speech bubbles. Young readers will always be able to know who is speaking.
The three stories are "The Pie," "The Box," and "The Thing." In the first story, these two decide to team up to out-best their human(s). Can working together help them in reaching the goal--getting the PIE. In the second story, "The Box," Scratch LOVES, LOVES, LOVES the box. Sniff is less certain of the box, or the appeal of the box. But how does the box really feel about Scratch??? In the third story, Scratch and Sniff discover a new "thing." It is a mirror. How will these two respond to their mirror-second-selves????
My thoughts: This one was a DELIGHT. I absolutely loved it. It is definitely an early reader. Simple and basic in many ways. Yet there is humor in the stories. I think the book and series will prove appealing to those just learning to read. Definitely recommend for classroom purchase in addition to school and public libraries.
What a cute board book for toddlers. It's so nice to see there will shortly be two more books with the same wonderfully funny animal characters coming out in the next six months. Vicky Fang and Luisa Leal's little doggies will delight young children making them want to open the book over and over again to try and read on their own.
Parents will be thrilled to see their child having fun while learning to read. I'm sure kids will identify with how the little puppies smell something yummy and sniff to discover it is coming from the kitchen, but they are too small to get their paws on the pie cooling on the counter. Everyone will laugh watching the pups try to overcome that obstacle. Very cute. The illustrations that Lisa created really add to the cuteness and fun of the story.

Super fun early graphic reader and new series to the Scholastic Acorn line up. Kids who have both a cat and dog for a pet will really relate to this story. Funny and will definitely bring out the giggles. The text is easy enough for early readers to actually tackle independently and the graphic format will be engaging for so many! Three short stories within the book. I'm excited to see Book 2 in this series out in early December 2023?
Sniff (a cat) and Scratch (a dog) are best friends and house mates. In this collection of stories they work together to get a pie snack, find a box they have mixed feelings about, and discover a mirror.
A cute collection of stories that sound like very real things actual pets would do. The art style is attractive and engaging for kids, and the text is in a large, easy to read (and dyslexic friendly) font.
It's so difficult to write early readers with heart and humor while keeping the reading level accessible. Vicky Fang has done it with this one! Add the fact that it has chapters and graphic panels, and readers of this book will feel accomplished when the close the book. The illustrations by Luisa Leal are colorful, inviting, and adorably expressive. A winner all around!
Sniff and Scratch are best friends! They work together to get a pie that was made just for them (or so they think), they play with a box together and maybe get stuck, and they see some friends in a mirror. This is an adorable early graphic novel about the life of pets and how they might think. Kids will delight in this funny read!
Aww, so cute and funny. The cat and the dog are adorable and the situations they get into are so funny. The texts are very easy for the little ones to understand and feel proud while laughing out loud with these funny pets. Go get it for your little one now.
Two-Sentence Review: Vicky Fang and Luisa Leal are a great team as they tackle a friendship between "typical" nemeses as they go after a pie, a box, and even more objects. I adore the illustrations and the voices of these animals and they are truly appealing!
Perfect for new readers ready to take off on their own or for emerging readers to practice buddy reading. The style is like a graphic novel but the text is mostly high-frequency and easily decodable words. The story is high interest with two pets that should appeal to a wide audience.
Kids are really going to like this beginning reader series about Sniff the Dog and Scratch the Cat. It's funny, it's easy to read with simple text that will also push beginning readers outside their zone of proximal development. It's another winner Acorn has on their hands
Beginning readers will LOVE this hilarious early reader book with three separate stories. The two friends, Sniff and Scratch are adorably and colourfully illustrated and help each other. I'm 58 and it made me laugh out loud!
This is a fun buddy comedy early reader about a best friend cat and dog. It's an Acorn book, so you already know it will be fun with great coloring. The graphic novel style pages are fun and enticing for young readers.
This is such a cute early reader! Divided into three chapters, the words are decodable and repeated for mastery, but kids won't even think about the fact that they're learning to read because the characters are so charming and their adventures are so funny! A great choice for emerging readers.
This is a fantastic early reader. It's got adorable characters and funny storylines, but it also has simple sentences and enough repetition of words so that it's not frustrating for new readers. Love the expressive, colorful art by Luisa Leal as well! Highly recommend.
An enjoyable read. The antics between this dog and cat are quite funny. This book could also be labeled a beginner graphic novel as well. Solid book to have kids practice reading with.
