Full Shift: A Graphic Novel

Rate this book
In this queer, supernatural YA graphic novel from the author of Some Girls Do and the illustrator of Wonder Warbringer, a reluctant teen werewolf would do anything to be human—if that's what it takes to win her crush's heart.High school senior Tessa doesn't fit in anywhere. Not at school, where she can't figure out how to confess the feelings she's had for her best friend Maddie since the fourth grade. And definitely not at home, where the rest of her family of werewolves make her feel like an outcast because she can't even shift into her full wolf form yet. Sometimes she thinks her whole life would be easier if she was normal, like Maddie and everyone else at school. When word gets out that a group of werewolf hunters has infiltrated her pack's territory, and that they've developed a treatment that can make werewolves become human, Tessa thinks she's found the answer to her problems. But when it turns out there might be more to the hunters' plans than anyone knows, it's up to Tessa to put herself on the line to protect the lives of those she loves the most.

This was a fun YA Sapphic coming of age werewolf graphic novel from one of my fav authors, Jennifer Dugan. The illustrations were good, lots of color and not too much text. I liked the pack mentality and the grief over the death of a beloved parent and pack leader. Important lessons about loving and accepting who you are and coming out to potential love interests. Looking forward to reading more by this author/illustrator duo!

So this was good and all but all of the artwork is blurry in the ARC copy. Unfortunately that did hinder my love for it a little bit because it's almost like it felt like a specific choice because all of the text is crystal clear. I have no idea how anything works involving downloads and image quality and all of that but it was so weird that the text was clear but the artwork was blurry.

I'll probably flip through a final copy at some point just to see the artwork and all its glory but I don't know if I would buy it. It is a decent book but I didn't love it.

Full Shift is a queer, werewolf graphic novel that follows Tessa. She doesn’t fit in anywhere—not in her pack where she feels like an outcast because she can’t shift into her full form yet, and definitely not at school where she can’t figure out to confess her crush on Maddie. When she learns that a group of werewolf hunters is roaming around her pack’s territory, and that they have a cure to make werewolves turn into humans, Tessa thinks its fate. If she were human, all her problems would go away. But when she discovers there’s more to the hunters than she originally believed, Tessa must step up to protect those she loves or risk losing them forever.

Did anyone else go from Warriors to werewolf stories? No? Just me? Well this was another perfect read for my tween heart. As much as I love vampires, werewolves hold a special place in my heart. This was such a cute, fast-paced graphic novel that I adored. It’s such a sweet story about finding yourself and learning to love yourself. I loved the queer representation and the romance was truly the best. The plot is super engaging and it’s so easy to fly through.

I loved Tessa and Maddie—they’re so sweet together. It was so fun and amusing to watch their relationship progress (and see Maddie’s reaction to Tessa being a wolf). It was hilarious! They have such good chemistry and both girls are so strong and clever and truly care so much for their loved ones. They have such strong protective instincts and it was so sweet. I loved Tessa’s pack too—they all truly love one another and getting to watch all their characters and relationships develop was so lovely. It was all so well done!

Also, the art is GORGEOUS! I adored the style so much!

If you like werewolves or queer teens falling in love, you’ll 100% love this graphic novel!

Thank you to Penguin Teen for the arc in exchange for an honest review!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!!

It was really hard for me to read the book for some reason, but I still enjoyed what I could see of the art. Idk if it was me or the download but the pages were a little blurry. I was still able to get most of the story.

This is my second Jennifer Dugan graphic novel and I’m definitely a fan. Coven was great and this one is up there too. In the beginning, I wasn’t sure what I thought of Tessa. She got a bit annoying in the way that she treated people, but I can see where she comes from. Her need to belong and fit in mirrors my own at times. Maddie seemed ready to do anything for Tessa even though she really didn’t deserve it, so you have to give it to her for being a good person and a good friend.

The pack seemed so fun and I loved them. Having a big family to do stuff with seems both annoying and exciting. Even though she didn’t see it at first, I’m had they were there for her when she needed them. Mack turned out to be a great leader and father figure and even Kylie seemed like a great sister after the beginning. I teared up near the end.

The only thing I wish was we could have seen more monsters since they were mentioned. It would have been cool!

thank you for penguin teen and gp putnam's sons books for young readers for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

this was easily my favorite jennifer dugan yet. from the art style to the story i really did enjoy the story overall. while this was short and sweet it truly packed a punch as i teared up a few times followings tessa's story. i think this graphic novel is a great metaphor for dealing with mental illness, specifically depression, while giving it a quirky supernational spin and explanation.

tessa goes from a tough time, grieving the loss of her father and feeling like a misfit to growing more into herself and finding her people so to speak. it was a beautiful little story and makes me feel redeemed and excited to try again with dugan's graphic novels in the future after not being so successful in the past.

The story: Full shift is a refreshingly new and exciting story. Throughout reading this graphic novel I constantly found myself thinking ‘I have never read anything like this before’. The confidence Jennifer Dugan had in this story and in her writing was palpable. The grief was written into this story so organically that I felt the deep emotions Tessa was feeling although I have never lost a parent myself. Similarly, without ever having a sister, I felt like I could relate to the annoying, competitive, and loving relationship between Tess and Kylie. It was really fun to watch their relationship ebb and flow throughout the story. The blend of blood relatives and found family also set a really beautiful foundation for the support Tessa finds by the end of the story. The love interest, Maddie, had me feeling all kinds of proud – a strong, intelligent, confident, queer young women – YES YES YES! Throughout the story, I truly connected with Tessa’s story of feeling lost, insufficient, helpless but finding yourself through wanting to help others.

The Art: There are not enough positive adjectives in the English language to describe these perfect graphics! The detail is unmatched and has me wanting to re-read this novel over and over again, convinced I’d notice something new each time! The way the grey scale is used in contract to the vivid forefront of the main characters of a scene provides an immersive reading experience without being overwhelmed by the drawings. The individuality of each wolf was phenomenal to see. I also really enjoyed all the food in the air throughout the book – that had me laughing out loud!

As always, its so refreshing to read stories with queer main characters that don’t revolve around coming out or queer angst! These stories are IMPORTANT. Every young adult (and adult) can relate to Tessa’s story, queer or not.

Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin for sending me an early copy of this graphic novel! All opinions are my own!

Sapphic supernaturals? Say less! A walk through grief and self discovery that will send you on an emotional rollercoaster that leaves you warm and fuzzy at the end? Yes please!

My favorite part of this graphic novel is the depth behind it and the way that it deals with such heavy topics. Grief is a theme throughout the entire story, and it uses grief to weave in self growth and identity as well as family and overall mental health. Despite the limitations of this form of media, it does a wonderful job of portraying mental health and the journey that grief and isolation can take you on. It deals with this so well in such a short amount of time, and I love the way that family and support is brought into the story to show where strength can be found and how the light can drown out the darkness.

The romance is super cute, and I love the slight miscommunications that happen between them to spur the more "enemies" to lovers line because it just makes everything that much more entertaining. It's overall so sweet and innocent, and I loved the growth that comes from their relationship as well.

If you're looking for a quick, fun read, look no further!

A queer YA graphic novel about a girl who would do anything to be human by @jl_dugan & @seakitillustrate
🐺
Tessa is struggling to fit in both at home and school. Ever since her younger sister transitioned to a werewolf before her, she now acts like her older sister. She’s crushing on her friend, Maddie, and Mack, the man who replaced her dad after his death, is not her father, no matter how hard he tries. Still unable to fully transform on her own when she wants, Tessa thinks being human would be better. When she hears of another pack who has the cure for this, she thinks all her problems are solved. But the pack may have nefarious intentions and it’s up to Tessa to protect those she loves.
🌕
This was such a great story—I even teared up at the end. I wish the eARC had allowed me to see the illustrations better, but what I did see was amazing. I can’t wait to get the physical copy. I’m looking forward to more graphic novels by Dugan. I received a free copy for an honest review. This #book releases August 27!

A Joyfully Jay review.

Full Shift is a 257-page graphic novel, and I wish it were longer. The art is loose and organic, with flowing shapes and an emphasis on natural colors and forms. The woods, the river, the buildings, and the clothing of Tess and the pack are in subdued neutral shades, while Maddie stands out in more vibrant colors. The wolves themselves are drawn with humor and joy — with lolling tongues and bright, eager expressions. It’s a joy to look at.

The story is quick and the writing bright. The banter between Maddie and Tess is sharp, and a stark contrast to Tess’ quiet moments of despair.

I received an early copy from the publisher via Netgalley for review purposes; this in no way influences my review.

This is overall really cute and I loved a lot of the elements of chosen family and focus on community as family. The romance between Tessa and Maddie was sweet though definitely had some stuff to work through given the whole coming out scene - which had me absolutely cackling. I especially enjoyed the humor that kept coming up during the most dire moments, which helped keep the story overall very lighthearted.

Thank you to the publisher and net galley for an early copy for review. This title is set to release on 8/27/24 from G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers.

I really enjoyed Full Shift and would recommended to YA readers who are looking for a coming of age story that might be different from some others they've read. Full Shift is a mixture of a werewolf story and pack drama but also has a strong message of accepting yourself which resonated with me as an adult. The art was beautiful and really made the story come to life. I believe there will be a lot of people who enjoy this and have. strong takeaway from it at the end. Also it's. sapphic werewolf story, what more could you ask for?

(Full disclosure: I received a free e-ARC for review through NetGalley.)

When Tessa's longtime crush Maddie passes her a note referencing 'all that they have in common,' Tessa is stoked: could Maddie possibly a werewolf too? Maybe the "curse" she's been wishing away her whole life finally has an upside. Or, no, that's clearly too much to hope for; if Maddie isn't a werewolf, what kind of supe could she be? (Witch? Banshee? Vampire? The possibilities are endless.)

But the big reveal goes horribly wrong, and Tessa is left feeling even more alone and alienated (from her pack, classmates, and the world in general) than before. When her pack alpha and surrogate dad, Mack, gets some intel about a group of hunters who are working with a rogue witch to cure werewolves, Tessa strikes out on her own in search of them. Not to neutralize the threat, but to offer herself up as a guinea pig: she's sick of being a werewolf, and a middling one, at that. (Her younger sister, Kylie, shifted a full two years before Tessa, and Tessa has yet to shift fully.) But a lone wolf is a dangerous one, and Tessa's teenage angst quickly puts everyone she loves in danger. Can she finally surrender to the wolf inside of her, before it's too late?

FULL SHIFT is such a great book that I'm willing to add it to my favorites bookshelf, even if I could barely make out the artwork. When it comes to e-ARCs of graphic novels, I usually get a digital copy that has some degree of pixelation; worst case, it's bad enough that I can't read the text without getting some serious eyestrain. This was a little different in that the text was crystal clear, while the artwork was nearly indecipherable. Luckily I was able to follow the story, even if I didn't get to marvel at Kristen Seaton's gorgeous illustrations. I mean, I'm inferring from the cover, but my hopes are high, especially for the wolves.

The story itself is entertaining and filled with pathos and heart. Tessa's feelings of loneliness - even in a lodge packed to overflowing with her extended wolf family - is the stuff of epic ballads. I love her scenes with Maddie (and Maddie's scenes with Mac), and the convo that kicks off the story is pretty hilarious. Ditto: the "what are your intentions with my daughter" interrogation; I'm not usually a fan, but the queer/werewolf spin makes it work. There are so many great little details, from the FAQ about werewolves to Tessa and Kylie's relationship and Tessa's meeting with her dad in the afterlife. Speaking of dads, I was all geared up to hate the replacement dad, but Mac is a pretty stand up guy. And his backstory with Anderson is fantastic too. I even loved the TWILIGHT references.

Honestly, I just can't say enough good things about FULL SHIFT. Gay werewolves? Sign me up!

Jennifer Dugan's Full Shift is a beautifully crafted graphic novel that captures the tumultuous journey of self-acceptance and bravery. At its heart is Tessa, a young werewolf struggling to find her place in both her school and her own family. Her struggles with her identity, compounded by her inability to fully shift into her wolf form, make her feel like an outsider in every aspect of her life.

Tessa's emotional turmoil is palpable, especially in her interactions with her friend Maddie, whom she secretly has feelings for. The tension of unspoken love adds a layer of depth to her character, making her relatable to anyone who has ever felt the sting of unrequited affection. The portrayal of Tessa's internal conflict and her desire to fit in is both touching and heart-wrenching.

The plot takes a gripping turn when Tessa learns about a group of werewolf hunters who have infiltrated her pack's territory with a supposed cure to turn werewolves human. This discovery initially seems like a solution to all her problems. However, as Tessa delves deeper, she uncovers sinister aspects of the hunters' plans. Her journey from seeking an escape from her werewolf identity to embracing it in order to protect her loved ones is compelling and inspiring.

Dugan's narrative is complemented by stunning artwork that vividly brings Tessa's world to life. The visual storytelling is powerful, conveying emotions and action in a way that words alone could not achieve. The artist's use of color and detail enhances the mood and tone of the story, drawing readers into Tessa's world.

One of the most poignant moments in Full Shift is Tessa's realization and acceptance of her true self. Her journey is one of courage and self-discovery, culminating in a climax that left me in tears. The emotional resonance of her story, coupled with the high stakes and intense action, makes this graphic novel a memorable read.

In conclusion, Full Shift is a moving and visually stunning graphic novel that explores themes of identity, belonging, and bravery. Jennifer Dugan has created a story that is both heartfelt and thrilling, making it a must-read for fans of the genre. While there were moments where the pacing felt a bit rushed, the overall impact of Tessa's journey makes it a four-star experience well worth your time.

***Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Random House Putnam for sending me an e-arc of Full Shift by Jennifer Dugan and Kit Seaton. All thoughts are my own!***

My rating: 4.5 stars

Tessa is a werewolf supe who doesn't feel like she belongs anywhere, including in her own pack. She's an outcast in her pack since she can't shift into her full werewolf form. And she can't even tell Maddie, the girl who she's had a crush on since fourth grade, that she likes her. She would give anything if she didn't have to be a werewolf anymore.

So when Tessa finds out a group of werewolf hunters seem to have the cure to make her just human, she tracks them down. But tracking them down mean risking her entire pack in the process. The only way to save everyone is to embrace her inner wolf.

I've been highly anticipating the newest graphic novel from Jennifer Dugan and Kit Seaton since i found out they were coming out with another one after Coven. I'm glad they did another supernatural type story. I love Kit Seaton's art style, but unfortunately in the arc, it was a little grainy. I know it's probably because it's digital I had an issue making out some of the details on the pages. I was reading it on my phone but usually I don't have issues reading graphic novels on my phone, but I know in print it will be clearer.

I really liked the story itself. Tessa having to trust her pack and embracing her inner wolf to take down the bad guys that want to kill her pack. And a queer romance from Jennifer Dugan always hits the mark. The grief in this graphic novel hit me a bit. Tessa's father was the alpha of their pack before he died from cancer and the flashback moments in this book really hit how deep she had a relationship with her father.

The lessons at the end of the graphic novel that Tessa learned also ended the story nicely. The fact that Tessa doesn't need to be someone else, that her being part werewolf is who she is and it's something to love about herself.

This graphic novel is such a quick read, but it's definitely a great read. Anyone who loves a supernatural, queer, YA graphic novel will highly enjoy it.

I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

Full Shift by Jennifer Dugan and Kit Seaton is a YA paranormal Sapphic graphic novel. Tessa is a werewolf with a large pack and still learning how to fully shift. When her crush, Maddie, puts a note in her locker, Tessa becomes convinced that Maddie is also a supernatural being only to not only expose herself as a werewolf, but also to learn that Maddie is completely human. Meanwhile, a group of supernatural hunters are looking to hurt Tessa’s pack in revenge for the turning of a friend.

I really liked the worldbuilding in this. Werewolves count ages differently than humans, with the first year of life being when they shift for the first time. This creates an interesting relationship between Tessa and her younger/older sister Kylie. Kylie was born two years after Tessa but because Kylie shifted for the first time more than a year before Tessa, Kylie is the older sister in werewolf society. There’s some really cool and interesting ideas in this concept that I would love to see explored more in werewolf fiction and by the creators of this graphic novel.

Tessa and Maddie’s romance was super cute. Tessa has had a crush on Maddie since the fourth grade and is very shy around Maddie until her secret is exposed. The misunderstandings between them felt real and fed into the allegories of Queerness and being a late bloomer. Maddie is very sweet and gives Tessa a lot of chances, showing compassion and understanding towards Tessa’s stressful situation while also expressing curiosity in shifter society.

I would recommend this to fans of Queer paranormal romance, readers looking for a Sapphic take on werewolves through a YA lens, and those looking for Queer graphic novels.

ARC Review: Full Shift by Jennifer Dugan, illustrations by Kit Seaton.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Out August 27, 2024

Thank you, #NetGalley and @penguinteen, for a chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I only recently got into graphic novels, and the idea of a sapphic YA werewolf one was too appealing to pass up. Tessa, the main character, is a teenager dealing with a lot: the loss of her father, her feelings of being misplaced in her home life, and her first love, a girl she initially thought was revealing that she was also a supe, but really just is queer. Great news for Tessa’s crush, but bad news because she totally shifted in front of her, thinking that she was another supernatural creature.

This story does a great job dealing with the struggle to find one's identity. Dugan writes Tessa as such a relatable MC. The discomfort in your own body, the desire to be unlike everyone else—it all felt so true to being a teenager. Tessa thought she was finding a “cure” to her curse and instead found herself wrapped up in a race to save her family. Finally finding common ground with her pack was such a great moment for Tessa, who really felt like she never belonged to this pack.

The sapphic love story between Tessa and Maddie is so sweet. Maddie’s coming out was a funny miscommunication but she was so earnest and it’s obvious that the trust between them is a cornerstone in their relationship, even when they’re fighting. Dugan gave us a charming love story with the right amount of snark and shared understanding. No notes.

Overall, this is a fun, quick, and delightful read that I’d turn to again.

Thank you Penguin and Netgalley for this eARC, these opinions are my own. I have always been a fan of werewolves (they’re my supernatural favorite)! I think we need more of them! Luckily Jennifer Dugan delivered with this werewolf Graphic Novel! Tessa has felt like an outsider ever since her dad died. She hasn’t completed her full werewolf shift so she doesn’t fit in amongst her pack but she also doesn’t fit in with the humans either. And when she finds out the girl she likes is like her she thinks she may finally have someone, only Maddie’s version of like her isn’t what Tessa thinks. So when she finds out that there are hunters in the area who have a cure for werewolfism she seeks them out. But can she trust these hunters? Is she bringing danger to her pack and to Maddie? Will she find what she has been looking for? I love the meaning in the book of not feeling like you belong within your community (pack) and not feeling like you belong outside it either, until you start to find it within! I think many of us can relate! Plus Tessa and Maddie are just cute! And of course I’m there for anything werewolf! A sweet story about self-love and self-confidence! Definitely one to check out!

For fans of graphic novels, or those wishing to dip their toes into the pond, this is a great place to start. The artwork was easily understandable, the panels flowed well that I didn’t have to work to be sure I was reading them in the correct order.

Tessa didn’t fit in with her family, definitely didn’t fit in at school, and she made the ultimate mistake when a classmate was attempting to come out to her and thought it was coming out as a supernatural like she was. I was full of angst growing up, and I felt for Tessa. She can’t do the werewolf thing right and no one will let her live it down.

The art work was beautiful. There were a few pages I just sat there to take it all in. Especially, the werewolf pictures. I loved the detail and the extra effort that was put into it. I also loved the way the past was portrayed versus the present.

I feel like with a graphic novel, there were aspects of the storyline that suffered. It did feel a bit generic in places. I have seen the storyline done in so many different novels (even fanfic) that just felt like I have read this story so many times before.

Overall, this was a fun and very quick read. One I do feel like many would enjoy reading.

Now that this is like a thing, I’m going to be excited for a yearly release from Jennifer Dugan and Kit Seaton. Tying Full Shift into the same world as Coven made me even more excited about it as I was reading. Where the first book was about witches, this one is about werewolves. What’s next? Vampires? There were plenty of Twilight references. It could happen.✨

Ever since her father’s death, Tessa has felt like she’s on the outside of the pack. She’s there, but she’s not. She feels like she’s taking up space where she shouldn’t be. But when the girl she’s had a crush on for, basically, ever tells her they are “the same,” her assumption is that Maddie is a “Supe” (supernatural) like her. But you know what they say about assuming? When Maddie goes to wave her bisexual flag, Tessa shifts… now she’s really made a mess of things.

This was perfect. From the feathered hair, diverse blended/extended pack family, casual murder and feasting on animals (off page) and then of bad people (also off page), this was a really fun read. The artwork was gorgeous, as always, and the story made me have a tidal wave of emotions. Not only did we have a sad, lost love one moment, but we also got the happy bits that only a wild bunch of half-shifted werewolf kids can give us.

"Full Shift" by Jennifer Dugan is a captivating young adult graphic novel that delves into the transformative journey of Milo, a teenager who discovers his extraordinary ability to shape-shift into animals.

Milo's life takes a dramatic turn when he uncovers his hidden talent, leading to an exciting adventure filled with twists and turns. As Milo navigates his newfound powers, he faces numerous challenges, including the unwanted attention of those who seek to exploit his abilities.

Through Milo's experiences, Dugan explores themes of self-acceptance, friendship, and empowerment. Milo's struggles to control his powers serve as a metaphor for the adolescent struggle to find one's identity.

The graphic novel's vibrant artwork brings the story to life, immersing readers in Milo's world. The characters are relatable and well-developed, with Milo's loyalty to his friends and his own resilience making him a compelling protagonist.

While some plot points feel rushed and supporting characters could be further developed, "Full Shift" remains an engaging and thought-provoking read.

Ultimately, "Full Shift" is a triumphant tale of self-discovery, emphasizing the importance of embracing one's true self and the power of loyal friendships.

Tessa is part of a family of werewolves, only problem is she hasn’t been able to fully shift over into her wolf form. Most children who are born into this do so at a much younger age, so she also feels immature. Plus, she has a crush on a girl that she has known since 4th grade, and she seems to have a crush back on her. Is she also supernatural? She hints that she might have a secret.

But, no, not giving a way too much by saying that Maddie is just queer, but totally human.

Then Tessa hears about a cure for werewolves, and thinks if she can just become human, that all her problems will go away, and she can have the perfect life.

As you can probably predict, that is not what happens.

The whole story is cute, and fun, and full of love and companionship (from her family), and love and friendship from her crush. If only those darn werewolf hunters would just go away.

Good queer werewolf story. Although in the ARC, it was a bit hard to see the artwork, from the cover I assume that it will be just as crisp and clear.

I loved this book. Ever since I was younger, I always loved reading werewolf stories. Probably not the ones you're thinking of. I was not a Wattpad werewolf fan. I was a fan of the stories like this one.

This book is perfect for fans of Blackwater, which is a graphic novel and a webcomic that I believe I still free online? Along with other webcomics like Earthshine (my favorite), After Dark (eh, less good), and Time and Time Again. If you enjoyed this or any of those, those are my recommendations.

I thought that the art style (though blurry, which I assume will be fixed by the final draft, so that didn't affect my review) was very nice. I also liked the storyline, characters, and the depth. I thought the sibling dynamic of the sisters being both older and younger was fascinating and portrayed realistically too. Overall, this was a quick and very enjoyable read. I'd consider buying this to reread in the future.

Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Teen for the arc!
This story is all about accepting and understanding yourself and community. In this case, it happens to be a werewolf community. Tessa feelings of isolation from her family and community after the death of her father leads her to struggle with her identity as a wolf and feel as though she is drowning in her grief. The discussion of loss and grief in the story is one that is surprisingly impactful and emotional. Tessa’s feelings of isolation and grief lead her to lash out at her community as well as her wolf.
The romance is pretty sweet with Maddie being an amazing character. She is smart, powerful, and brave. I really like getting to see her dynamic with Tessa and how Maddie stands by her throughout the story.
I do wish that we got to see more connection between Tessa and her sister. The initial introduction to her sister where Tessa insults random things about her sister felt unnecessary. I think there could’ve been better ways to establish the friction between them.
