Kathryn Avinger was forced at a young age into a marriage with a much older man by her own Alpha father. With the death of her cruel and abusive husband, Kathryn is finally free but moments after her husband's coffin is lowered into the ground, an attempt is made on her life.

Renjiro Roesner has been in Europe for ten years and in that time has become a powerful wolf. He has just been called back from Europe and with the news of the attempt on Katheryn's life, he is determined to find the one responsible and not just because his Alpha ordered him to. Before heading to Europe, Ren and Kathryn fell in love and she was promised to him. Kathryn's father seeing the financial benefit of marrying his only daughter to a wealthy human, sold her to Preston Avinger, ending Kathryn and Ren's relationship. But now nothing will stop Ren from finding her would be killer and claiming Kathryn as his mate.

I would not consider Kathryn's character to be weak but inexperienced. She was married off, taken from her family and the only male she loved at just 18. She was thrown into a world she new little about and was forced to be with a man who just wanted to use her. I think all things considering, she held herself together nicely. After her husband's death she doesn't plan to run back to her father like a scared pup but instead she plans to take care of herself. When Renjiro first arrives back into her life it doesn't take long for her to fall for the man she once and still loves. I liked that she didn't just run to him and confess her undying love. She stood composed and somewhat defiant but not completely cold hearted towards him. It was her father that put them in this situation and they both come to understand this. Renjiro is a strong male without being overbearing. He does not demand that Kathryn submit to him but bides his time by finding the one who is trying to kill her. Once he does claim her, it gets very steamy very fast.

Heart of the Wolf is short and sweet. The characters are instantly likable and the story keeps the reader hooked from the start. I wished it would have been longer because I just didn't get enough of these characters and if it turns into a series, I will definitely keep reading.

Wonderful!

This is the first book by D. B. Reynolds I read. Even though her Vampires in America are my favorites, I wish she would go back to writing werewolf stories also. She never fails to create an engrossing story as well as red hot romance. And, her characters are real, live beings, not mere cardboard pieces created to fill her sex scenes.

Being a huge fan of the Vampires in America Series I had high expectations coming into this novella? Short novel? (Not sure which it is.)Anyway, I set my sights high and although it is not the same world as VIA it certainly was enjoyable and satisfying.

D.B. Reynolds introduces us to the North American Wolf clan of shifters and a widow who was, in her words, sold by her father, the Alpha Wolf to her ex husband. A husband who was fifty years older than she and wildly financially successful. But this man had plans, of immortality and to live for centuries hoping that Kathryn would turn him. He did not know that was impossible and got cancer and spent a few years dying.

At his funeral someone tries to kill Kathryn and her father calls back from Europe, his enforcer Renjaro. Kathryn and Ren were in love ten years ago. Ren was ordered to Europe and Kathryn believing that she was abandoned by her mate is given in marriage to the nasty wealthy American.

Ren and Kathryn are working to solve who tried to kill her and in that process feel the flames of their love re-ignight (wow I sound like a commercial)She reluctant, he unsure. They both gave up and resigned themselves ten years ago that they would not be together and are both a little unsure of the other.

She wants Freedom now after having been denied it so long and he tells her you can be free and not alone. Come find me when you realize that.

Again, a sweet story. I hope the author shares more of this world with us in the future. I really enjoyed this.

Ashira Datya’s Review

Kathryn, a beautiful young woman who has known nothing but hatred and torture for the last ten years of her life, suddenly finds herself in danger after the death of her much older husband.

Her childhood love, Ren, comes back from Europe to protect her and find out who wants to hurt her and they are shocked to learn of the truth that caused their separation a decade before.

I really enjoyed Heart of the Wolf, it was a well written, well conceived and thrilling story. I enjoyed “watching” while Ren and Kathryn reconnected, and found love again. My only real complaint is that I wish Heart of the Wolf was longer. I give Heart of the Wolf three Tea Cups and a heat rating of a two. This was a great story.

This novella moved quickly and was full of suprises, twists and turns. The story line was well developed and hooks the reader immediately. I really liked the H and h (Ren and Katheryn). I wish the book had been longer with more opportunity to get to know the principal characters as well as to spend more time with them as their relationship grows and develops. I only wish the author had developed this into a series. It just has such real possibilities. Over all I rated the novella at 4 and assigned a sexy rating of 4.5.

I am a major fan of Ms. Reynolds, all three of her series and love, love, love Vampires in America. I would love to see her spend some time developing this story into a series as the story of shifters and the principal characters have such promise. Hint, Hint D.B.

Short but sweet (and sexy) story. Even at only 89 pages long, you still love Ren and Kathryn. Ren has that sexy-hot dominant male thing going on that I love!

Since it's a short story, I can't really comment on the pacing or such but I read it in the hour before I went to work and didn't want to put it down.

Great story and only cost, like, a quid so well worth it. Get it from Bookstrand and don't be put off with the checkout process. It's all very confusing and a bit too long for my liking. I like click and enter your details and you're done.

A quick read, shifters, alpha males and long lost loves.
Kathryn lost her sweetheart and was sold into marriage by her father ten years ago, now her husband has died but someone is trying to kill her. Who does her father send as a protector? The one she never stopped loving, Renjiro. He´s never forgotten her either.

This was a sweet novella. It definitely wasn't like the Vampires in America series but it was a good story. It would have been a great, solid story if it was a full length novel and expanded on the characters and their motivations.

But, all in all, it was a very enjoyable read.

For those of you who have read Vampires in America, this story is totally different.
A short, quick read and no Vampires in sight, however I still found this a thoroughly enjoyable tale.
I would be interested to see Ms Reynolds delve further into the shifter realm.

Great story, but too short it would have benefited and been a more solid story if it was a full length novel and the characters given more depths.

Heart of the Wolf

I ran across this book after I finished the New Orleans books. This would have been a good start to a new series.
This author is a winner with all her books.
