One funeral wasn't enough for you?" said the kidnapper's note...

Deafened in an attempted murder, Detective Cameron Douglas is involuntarily retired from the force, despite his willingness to continue with the investigation of the murder of the mayor's secretary. Now, it's personal. ENT therapist Noel Miller is a vampire with a few scars of his own. He wants to be more than Cam's interpreter and instructor in deaf culture. He could help Cam, if only the werewolf will let him into his life and heart.

Then the murderer strikes again. Right at Cam.

Lena Austin is a "fallen" society wench with a checkered past. She has been a licensed minister, haidresser, and a realtor, radio DJ, exotic dancer, telephone service tech, live-steel medievalist swordswoman, BDSM Mistress, and investment property manager. Not necessarily in that order. She never finished that degree in archaeology, but did learn to scuba. After a life that, gardening is pretty restful. Of herself, Lena writes, "I'm tall, presently red-haired, and I look like an holy mating between an Amazon and a librarian."

First up, let me just say that I really enjoyed this book. Now, I can tell you that certain parts of it felt rushed, especially once Noel is kidnapped, and also that at times it felt like you were being overloaded with information just so the story could continue, again, after Noel is kidnapped when Andrew is bringing Cam up to speed.

Now, let me tell you that this is the story of Cam, a police officer, who is investigating the death of his 'Aunt Maggie', the Mayors secretary and his mothers long term partner since Cam's father passed. When investigating this murder, Cams car is blown to smitherines while he is a few metres away and he is in the hospital with loss of hearing. Enter Noel, his ENT (ear, nose, throat) specialist. Noel is a vampire, they kiss. Mark, Cams police boss, comes to let him know he is fired.

There are a few other connections, such as Noel knew Cams grandfather when he was younger, actually studied piano under him, but basically, six months later, Cam joins an elite PI organisation, unknowingly friends of Noels. Cams mother, and then Noel, are kidnapped, and the action part of the book kicks in. I'm not going to ruin the whole book for you, but trust me, I never saw the twist of who the killer was coming...it was well done.

Emotions are true to form in this book, with Cam changing at key points when emotions are high, and other paranormal types joining the frey at times too. All of the characters, whether focal or supportive, were easy to follow and easy to connect with and understand. The only drawbacks causing the loss of a star were those in the first paragraph. Otherwise, with this being book one, I can't wait for more! Nx.

Characters a bit two diminutional. Too fantastical for my tastes. I can usually suspend disbelief to read a vampire or shifter story, but with about a dozen paranormal beings in one story, it became just too much and silly. Also, this story has an instant relationship between Cam and Noel, one of my pet peeves. The plot is actually decent, if you can overlook the above elements.

I love Vampire and Shifter stories and this was fairly good for such a short one. It had some lovely humour and a fair bit of action. My only complaint is that it was too short and didn't really flesh out the world as much as it could have.

Could not finish it. It felt like you were just dropped into the story having no clue of the background of it.
