One hot guy, one funny-looking guy, one hilarious couple!
Yoshida is short, scrawny and generally unattractive. To make matters worse, all the girls in his class hate him because Sato, the hottest guy in school, always uses hanging out with him as an excuse to turn them down. Is Yoshida just a convenient excuse or is there something more? Could this odd couple even make things work?!
Awkward Yoshida is hated by all the girls in school for his perceived closeness with hot guy Sato, who uses hanging out with Yoshida as an excuse to turn them all down. If Yoshida is merely an excuse, why does Sato taunt him in private about “his favorite”? Is it possible Sato’s feelings run deeper than friendship? And what could he possibly see in the funny-looking Yoshida? Watch Yoshida’s life turn upside down with hilarious results!
I am still fangirling about this manga, which I found through my recommendations on Goodreads. I just love shounen-ai/yaoi manga, and this one is even cuter than those manga from that genre/those genres are (I didn't know that was possible).
It still has the super-silliness though, that those books from those genres often have. :)
Our main character is that derpy looking guy from the cover. He doesn't only look a bit derpy, he also acts like that. He gets into a lot of trouble in his school by the girls there. Oh no, he isn't a playboy, but a certain popular guy is using him as an excuse, and all the girls are now hating on our poor MC. Yes, this sounds terribly mean, but our popular guy has a good excuse for why he is using that guy as an excuse for everything. Yes, romance. Even though it takes our MC ages to find out (while we can clearly see it all), and even then he is confused by everything. Which is logical, finding out that you like guys might be a bit of a shock. Finding out that you like it when he kisses you.... or does more things to you.
You can just imagine the hilarious situations that come forth from this. I just rolled off my chair because it was just so funny (but also cute) to see those two get close, and our MC being slightly oblivious + embarrassed. :)
Of course it was also soooo adorable to see these 2 grow together, and also to have the MC find out a certain thing about our hot boy.
I also laughed when the stereotypical rival arrived, and what happened after that one.
The art is pretty brilliant, however I didn't entirely liked how the MC was drawn. I can imagine drawing him to stand out a bit, but this is just ridiculous. His friends also look a bit weird and out of place. :(
All in all, I will be continuing this series. I can't wait to see what will happen with these 2, I am hoping they will truly get together, that our MC will realize his feelings for real now.
I would recommend this one if you are looking for a silly (but oh so cute) shounen-ai/yaoi manga.
For one, it's funny and adorable. For two, it flies in the face of consent-culture. Three, I suspect there's a cultural gap that I need to navigate to truly understand what's going on. THEN maybe I can decide how to feel about it (like is this book full of rape jokes, or rather is it poking fun at the power of the 'male-gaze', or is laughing at how girls give up power in their attempts to gain it by acquiring a 'desirable man'?)
My other confusion concerns Yoshida's physical appearance. He's scruffy, has a scar on his face, and has almond-shaped eyes with tiny pupils. He's cute, so why is he being billed as 'ugly'? I know a little about how characters in manga who are considered attractive usually have Western features, but I can't quite get a read on Yoshida's looks, especially since he's a growing teen and his mom (shown in the first book) has similar features and looks normal and 'fine.'
'His Favorite' has a potato-chip level addictiveness, more fluidity in sexuality than I expect from comics (though maybe there's precedent for this in manga?), and one of the most unusual premises I've seen for a romance comic.
Reread, because GR keeps recommending it to me. I guess I didn't put it on GR when I read it before.
"Ugly" Yoshida is getting harassed by all the girls, because the class hottie Sato keeps turning them all down saying he's got plans with Yoshida. Yoshida doesn't know why until he sees Sato eating one day and realizes he's met Sato before...
Funny, cute, but kind of fucked up. Not Let Dai, Volume 01 level fucked up, more cute but a little twisted. I seem to like stories with pretty fucked up relationships.
Art is good but not super pretty. There's a cute 30 page story in the back with separate characters.
High School / dub-con / nothing really graphic on page, just kissing in the main story.
Readers who can't deal with Baby It's Cold Outside should probably stay away.
Structure-wise: Chapter 1 was originally a one-shot. There are at least 9 more volumes (I own 7) but you could probably stop after this one and be reasonably content with it.
I re-read this, which was a cute high school romance. I didn't like this as much the second time around. We follow a boy named Yoshida who deals with bullying every day. One of his biggest bullies is Sato, the most popular boy in school. Sato has eyes for Yoshida and teases him constantly, can these two opposites come together and be each other's favorite? While, I did enjoy this still, the bullying wasn't my favorite this time around. I also didn't really like the fatphobia. Kids are mean. I'll still continue to read this series, because the art is cute and I'd like to see where this couple goes.
One of my favourite mangas in the shonen ai/yaoi genre. Adorable and funny. Guy crazy girls, the hottest guy in school with a secret and one of the so called ugliest guys. The drawing style looks like a mix of detailed and simple. I love how Sato and Yoshida interact, especially Sato’s S nature.
I loved this and I can't wait to continue the series! For now, I'm going to give this series 3 stars but I can see how this could turn into a 4 or a 4.5-star series.
The writing felt a built stilted and the story progression was a bit awkward, but I still thought it was cute. I'm looking forward to read more about these two weirdos.
This series is ridiculously fun! I bought the first volume (and two and three) tonight for my Kindle and blew right through it. I love the art, and even though Yoshida is supposed to be an "ugly" character, I find him so endearing! Sato is funny, too, even if he can get nasty to Yoshida. But I do like the characters and their over the top reactions. I can see why this series is so popular in Japan, and I just home SuBLime keeps released it over here!
Plus, you can't beat the price for the Kindle. It's actually the first volume(s) I bought to try out on my new Kindle Fire 7". I like to collect manga in paperback, but it's getting harder to find, so I thought I'd give this series a shot because the price was cut in half.
The colors are bright and the art is crisp and clear. It's easy to read on the 7" screen, too, which was what I was most worried about. Thought I miss holding the paperback in my hand, and I'm still not feeling like I actually "own" what I'm reading, I'm sure it will grow on me. I'll at least finish this series, that's for sure!
Quick sum up to save you reading my extensive and rather disjointed ramblings: I consider this a great series (I'm waiting on volume 6 to be released), the characters are humorous and the art is excellent. I suggest reading it although others may suggest to you to do otherwise. If you don't like the first one you don't have to go on but you should at least try it =)
This was so sweet and so good. The illustrations are really incredible. I found myself laughing a lot while reading I can't wait to read the next volume.
This is a reread. I first read this a few years ago when I was so into yaoi manga that I didn't read anything else for months, I was obsessed, but I ended up stopping at vol. 1. I don't know why I didn't continue reading it, maybe it's because I found the girls at his school really annoying or it could be because I'm just terrible at continuing and especially finishing them, especially back than.
Overall, I enjoyed the story so far and it's my first shonan-ai series in a long time. If you don't know, shounan-ai is boys love that doesn't feature sex. I usually read yaoi, which is boys love with sex. I enjoyed it enough that I will preobably buy the series soon. Also, I don't think Yoshida is ugly, I think he's cute.
I was feeling very nostalgic for manga, and this was the first BL manga I ever purchased with my own money, so it has a special place in my heart. It still holds up!!
The banter between Sato and Yoshida is *CHEF’S KISS* and I could bask in this sort of banter with any couple; it’s just so compelling and shows a level of comfortability that can get lost very quickly in the romance genre unless the pull is enemies/rivals to lovers (and even then, sometimes the banter disappears, sadly). I also love the timeless concept of the hot person vying for the unconventional looking person, generally described as ugly but Yoshida is very adorable imo.
I own the second volume, but I’m about to go feral and buy the rest of it.
I love Yoshida; he's just too cute. I also love some of the intentionally exaggerated humor. While I'm not sold yet on the couple, I am intrigued enough by their dynamic to want more.
I just rolled off my chair because it was just so funny (but also cute) to see those two get close. Of course it was also so adorable to see these 2 grow together, and also to have the MC find out a certain thing about our hot boy. The art is pretty brilliant but the mc looks just as weird as his friends. I will be continuing to read this series. I can't wait to see what will happen with these 2, I am hoping they will truly get together, that our MC will realize his feelings for real now. I would recommend this one if you are looking for a silly (but oh so cute) shounen-ai/yaoi manga. I may even reread it myself after finishing it.
I found through my recommendations on Goodreads. I just love shounen-ai/yaoi manga, and this one is one of the cuter manga from that genre.
I'm a little torn here. The romance in this book borders on rape-y, and I'm not into it. I think it's well written and the art is nice, but I don't know if I can get over the lack of consent in the sexual situations. I'm going to try #2, but I might give up. I know the rape fantasy thing is a common theme in a lot of yaoi manga, but ... but.
This manga series picks up all the BL clichés and gives them a humorous twist.
I can see myself reading the continuation and having the feeling this is a comedy in which boys love each other; instead of being annoyed with a BL that uses too many jokes that aren't even that funny, so the author doesn't progress with the plot. Or the relationship and communication, which is just frustrating.
Sato kind of bullies Yoshida into dating him and is rough with him but if you read Yaoi you know it's pretty common. It was still really a really cute story and I've already ordered a couple more volumes and can't wait to read them.
This is one of my favorite yaoi series. Realistically its probably more a four star series but for my rating and tracking purposes its a full five. I collected the paperback series for a while but sold it and then used the money to buy the ecopies. A funny and surprisingly sweet story!
This was a very good story funny, sweet crazy characters and supporting characters. I really enjoyed reading this is to follow with no editing issues great illustration. Can't wait to get to the other stories I even like the short stories in between.
