Bruce Springsteen was the boss of 1970s hair

Today, ‘The Boss’ celebrates his 70th birthday, so we're celebrating with him through a 1970s grooming throwback. As well as mastering the style of the decade, Bruce Springsteen also mastered the hair: curly, textured and constantly showing off some serious height. So we called up Joe Mills (of Joe And Co) and asked him to guide us through this stellar grooming regime…

Bruce Springsteen has long been The Boss: in music, in style and in grooming, throughout the 1970s especially. How would you describe this cut? And what products should I use to style my hair similarly?

Joe Mills: In contrast to the likes of David Bowie who made many grooming statements in the 1970s (all incredible, FYI), Bruce Springsteen's ’do had a much more natural feel to it with a longer and softer cut. So it’s safe to say The Boss himself bossed the hair game during this period. I'd dub it a mullet meets shag style.

To achieve the cut, ask your barber to leave the length around the back and sides, but this needs to be layered and cut with a fair bit of texture. The top needs to be shorter – ideally just a couple of inches long – and this needs to blend in with the back and sides while still in keeping with the textured feel.

Once you've got your cut sorted, wash your hair using Sachajuan's Shampoo and Conditioner. After this, on clean and damp hair, use a tangerine-sized amount of Kevin Murphy's Body Builder hair mousse. The oil in this locks your hair to create shine while also moisturising through its vitamin B5. You're left with a great amount of flexible fullness and hold, both of which are essential to achieving an appearance of The Boss.

Afterwards, using a hairdryer, blow dry your hair up and back from your face and the sides back away from your face. When you're doing this, make sure to dry the back of your hair in towards your neck. Oh, and using a Denman Vent brush, create some height on the top using the flow of the dryer to lift the roots.

Once dry, you need a little product to make it less fluffy and add a little shine. I recommend Bumble And Bumble's Sumotech – this is a matte product that gives your hair serious lift that lasts all day long. Use a 5p-sized amount, rub it through your hands and then apply to your hair. All you need afterwards is a strong bit of double denim and you're good to go!
