Hannaford Bros. Co. is a wholesale provider to its own and other retail supermarkets in the United States.
History
Hannaford was founded in 1883 by Arthur Hannaford as a small produce shop along the Portland, Maine, waterfront. His brothers Howard and Edward joined the business in 1902 and together incorporated Hannaford Bros. Co. Within the first two decades of the 20th century, the company became a leading produce wholesaler in northern New England.
The company began its expansion into the wholesale grocery business in 1939 with the purchase of Tondreau Supermarkets Inc. It opened its first retail outlet in 1944 under an equity partnership arrangement with Adjutor Tondreau. Hannaford remained a traditionally New England company until it purchased Wilson’s Supermarkets in North Carolina in the 1990s. Seeing the company’s success, Delhaize America, a division of food retailer Delhaize Group, bought Hannaford Bros. Inc. in 2000.
Staying true to its roots, Hannaford has remained committed to supporting local farmers and other local businesses. Its Close to Home program accounts for shorter distances to keep fresher items stocked. In 2009, Hannaford constructed the world’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design compliant grocery store and instituted the Guiding Stars program, a system designed to help shoppers determine the nutritional values of various products.
In addition to its retail supermarkets, Hannaford Bros. Co. has continued providing wholesale food through its warehouses in South Portland and Winthrop, ME, and Schodack, N.Y., even creating the Hannaford Trucking Company in 1982 to handle its trucking needs. Licensed to transport in 48 states, Hannaford Trucking Company is fully staffed with its own drivers and high-tech dispatch equipment. Maintaining complete control over all aspects of the supermarket process, from wholesaling to shipping to retailing, is what makes Hannaford Bros. Co. a unique entity. With company objectives to use local markets to stock individual stores, the company is meeting its commitment to reduce its carbon footprint.

I have been a customer of store #08336 Troy, New York , for many years…I realize the store is going thru an update or whatever it is that you are doing. It is such an expansive undertaking and certainly very disruptive.. Why wouldn’t you just close it down and do whatever it is you are doing? Why are you changing locations of almost every item is something no one understands. Every shopper you encounter in the store feels the same.. I think it is time to move on to a different market (Price Chopper) .. It took an extremely long time to shop and while having to wear a mask was very frustrating. Also, the store doesn’t have a lot of items..( You continually walk around frustrated and then you just leave the store (as we did).
I went to Farmington store to advise a store employee, that I would like to recommend a certain grocery item which had been carried in the stores, but now is no longer, nstead a larger item is now being carried. I n the past I could fill out a form and request a review, but I have been advised that this is no longer being done, BUT must be performed online. I have searched throughout the Hannaford web site, and Cannot find anywhere that I can make this suggeation.
There is a push in our community to ban plastic bags, instead of banning, would your company use biodegradable shopping bags? The more stores use them, the better the purchase price.
I always find your service representatives in the Guilderland and Voorhessville stores friendly and helpful. However, I am always disappointed with your fish/seafood selections. You need to carry more choices. Yesterday, I was looking for lake trout and you didn’t carry it. I went to Price Chopper and purchased it. Also, PC’s tuna steaks were $2 less per pound so I purchased them there instead of Hannaford.
Your 2% Hannaford rewards discount is little incentive for me to shop at Hannaford whereas I have found the gasoline credit program at PC very helpful.
I found “Waterhill Naturals uncured beef hot dogs” in the Clifton Park NY store a couple months ago. Now I go back for another package and they are out. So I wait a few days and check again, and asked if they were getting any in real soon. And was told no, they haven’t had any in a long time. The last time I bought them was about 5 weeks ago, since I only allow myself one hot dog a week and there are 5 in the package. Is there any chance of getting these back in the Clifton Park store?
