The Trial:

In 1925, Tennessee was the first state to prohibit public schools teaching of evolution. Fundamentalists found it as a threat to their beliefs.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) constructed anti-evolution laws as unconstitutional under the First Amendment to the Constitution. This allowed separation between church and state in public education.

How it ended:

In 1927, the Tennessee Supreme Court overturned the Scopes' Monkey Trial verdict on a technicality.

George Rappalyea,an evolutionist, recruited 24 year old John Scopes, who agreed to be indicted for teaching evolution. Traditionalists were worried that everything valuable was coming to an end.

How other people thought:

In 1925, people thought that John Scopes should be found guilty, and were hoping that the judge would think so too.

The ACLU did win the trial partly, because Tennessee prosecutors were directed not to indict ANYONE under The Butler Law.
