NIGHT in sign language

Night is a time when everyone goes to bed and sleep (or toss and turn) at the end of the day when the half of the world gets dark, except for nocturnal creatures which go out and hunt during the night.

"How do you express the concept of the time when it's dark outside after the sun has set in American Sign Language (ASL)?"

Meaning: The period of darkness between sunset and sunrise.

There is an imaginary 24-hour line around the base hand to indicate a time period of the day/night.

Pronunciation (sign description): Bent flat dominant hand with its palm facing down rests over the non-dominant palm-down flat hand, where the dominant forearm generally rests on the non-dominant hand.

Usage examples: "good night", "silent night", just about nearly anything with 'night'.

Opposite: MORNING.

"Night -- Place the hands and arms in position as if about to sign 'day' but move the hand down and describe a semicircle below the arm from right to left,thus representing the course of the sun during the period of time from set of sun to its rising." -- (1910) Ref

ASL has its own grammar and structure in sentences that works differently from English. For plurals, verb inflections, word order, etc., learn grammar in the "ASL Learn" section. For search in the dictionary, use the present-time verbs and base words. If you look for "said", look up the word "say". Likewise, if you look for an adjective word, try the noun or vice versa. E.g. The ASL signs for French and France are the same. If you look for a plural word, use a singular word.
