Since the hall's opening by Queen Victoria in 1871, the world's leading artists from many various performance styles have graced its stage and it has become the venue for one of the most notable events in British culture, the annual summer season of the Proms concerts, which have been held there since 1941.

Seat and box holders are entitled access to their seats for all Ordinary lettings, which amount to approximately to two thirds of the performances in the Hall in any twelve month period. The Last Night of the Proms is included in the Ordinary Lettings. For those events for which seat and box holders do not use their tickets, the Hall operates a successful Ticket Return Scheme, which enables seat and box holder tickets to be sold to the public and for which the seatholder receives a share in the proceeds of the Members tickets that have been returned. In acquiring stall seats or a box, the seat/box holder automatically becomes a Member of the Corporation of the Hall of Arts and Sciences, the body established by Royal Charter to hold the Hall in trust for the nation.
