When we tested this scale, we were pleasantly surprised at how easy-to-use it was, but also how it was practically ready to use right out of the box. The app was very user friendly and made it super easy (and exciting) to use with our smart devices. It’s for this reason we believe this scale is the best smart bathroom scale. Eternity's ESF-551 Smart Fitness Scale is a smart scale that uses four smart sensors to accurately and precisely weigh you. We tested out how precise it was by weighing a 20 pound dumbbell and it weighed in exactly at that number, if not only a half pound over. It hosts unlimited users, is compatible with other fitness apps, and has baby and zero-current mode to protect pregnant people and people with pacemakers. It also utilizes BIA technology, which is 4 electrodes that send a small electric current through the lower half of your body which gives you a detailed biometric analysis on the VeSync app. The physical scale has rounded corners and anti-skid padding for extra security. We felt the LCD display was super clear and easy-to-read. We feel that this scale is more than worth the price, especially given all the features, high user accessibility, and how simple the setup was. It made tracking our statistics incredibly easy, which made taking care of our health even easier. It’s Worth Noting While you can have unlimited users, you may have to program the users on different phones. We tested our two different scales for a month, weighing ourselves once daily. We evaluated each scale based on setup, reading consistency, ease of use, display readability, and durability. Throughout the entire testing process, we made a mindful note to only continue with our evaluations in stable health and mind, stopping if the weighing process was triggering or causing any distress. Accuracy: To begin the test, the team was weighed by a nurse practitioner supervising the test to see how accurate each scale was. We tested the precision of the scale by weighing another object (such as a 20-pound dumbbell) first. Every time we weighed ourselves, we did so first thing in the morning before eating and drinking, making note of the results every single day.Ease of use: We also used any accompanying apps on our phones and smart devices, noting if the app needed to be recalibrated every time we used it, if any other usage instructions needed to be repeated for each use (e.g., tapping the foot on the scale before use, etc.), and how many profiles you can store on the app for different users.Data Readability: We also checked if it tracks data over time and helps you understand what the data means. We also used dumbbells while on each scale to see how well the scales measured changes in weight.Durability: We also tested the scales for durability in a drop test, dropping a nine-pound toiletry bag onto each scale and then looking for any damage. Our Experts To help us come up with this list, we consulted the following expert: Deepti Agarwal, MD, Director of Interventional and Integrative Pain Management at Case Integrative Health in Chicago, Illinois. Bathroom Scale Accuracy A comprehensive study of smart scales found that weight was accurate across scales, with no difference between sexes or weight groups. A review of the accuracy and consistency of home bathroom scales showed that digital scales were correctly equalized and displayed accurate weights, while dial-based scales have a significant difference in weight readings. Dial scales also had a starting weight of about 0.95 kilograms or 2.09 pounds, which can significantly change the accuracy of the number you see on the scale. The research shows that human error is more likely the cause of scale inaccuracies than the scale itself. Many scales are now self-calibrated and offer a tare feature to zero the scale before stepping on it—both of which help keep the scale accurate long term. It’s best to zero out a scale before using it to get an accurate measurement. You should also ensure that your feet are completely on the scale and evenly placed to get a more accurate reading. Medical-grade scales that offer bioelectric impedance are more accurate in assessing body composition than home scales. However, DEXA scans are the gold standard for body composition analysis and bone density, according to a 2021 observational study in the Journal of Medical Internet Research. If your focus is currently on building lean muscle mass, it’s important to understand how this impacts your scale weight. More Bathroom Scales to Consider While these scales didn't fully meet our expectations, they may still interest you. iDOO High Precision Digital Bathroom Weight Scale: Although the scale is simple and quick, with no calibration required, our testers felt it was hard to read due to the flashing display on the blue background. It was difficult to capture the reading efficiently, so it didn’t make our final list. EatSmart Precision 550 Bathroom Scale: While this scale is no-frills and easy to use, we felt it was more appropriate for someone who only weighs in occasionally and isn’t trying to track their weight or health metrics regularly. The surface does retain footprints easily, and there’s no app to connect to for long-term tracking.Fitbit Aria Air: This high-quality smart scale has many of the same features as similar products, but you must be a member of Fitbit Premium to access the app and receive your comprehensive health data.
