History

The earliest settlers were the Maoris who leased 70 square kilometers of land of the Heretaunga plains to Thomas Tanner, a site of Karamu junction which was later renamed to Hastings. In 1989, Hastings was converged with Havelock North Borough that today stands as the Hastings district.

The city has faced several dangerous earthquakes over the last century that ended up in huge economic losses and also several lives were lost. This is due to its geographic location which makes it susceptible to high seismic activity.

  • Visit the Clearview Estate, one of the most established vineyards of the Kidnapper’s coast. It was established in the year 1987 by Tim Turvey and Helma van den Berg. located in Hawke Bay’s coastline at Te Awanga, the restaurant and winery are dedicated to offering you with great wine and cuisine with elaborate hospitality. It is open seven days a week during summer from 10-5 while Thursdays to Mondays from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM during winters.

  • Gannet Bikes- If biking through rugged trails is your idea of fun, Gannet Bikes offers to take you through the magnificent cliffs of beachy spots on their Fat Bikes and ultimately bring you to the Gannet Colonies. It is open during the months of January to April and from October to December.

  • Visit Te Mata Peaks- A great spot to give a striking view of the Craggy Range Winery and Bluff Hills of the Napiers. It is best visited during the months of fall and spring when the weather is pleasant and mild. The drive up to the hill is also a scenic one that offers you a trail of panoramic views to indulge in.

  • A self-guided bike trip from Coastal wineries to Napiers- Initiated by the Napier City Bike Hire and Tours, it offers you rental bikes to avail. You can help yourself with a map, spend quality time biking through the coast of beaches and trail through the four notable wineries, maybe stop at one. There is also a shuttle service at the end of your tour so you do not have to trudge your way back biking after tasting wine.

  • Cape Kidnappers- South to the bay of Napiers, Cape Kidnappers is a dotted area of white cliffs. It is alongside the mainland Gannet colonies. You can safari beach there or just stroll through them during low tides and click pictures of the place.

  • Ash Ridges Wine- A winery that is dedicated to serving you premium, fine quality wine from their handcrafted and single-estate vineyards. Adult entry here is free of cost and the winery is open from 10 am to 5 pm, except on Sundays.
