Election Night’s TV Turnout

Primetime coverage of the presidential election averaged 42.29 million viewers across 18 cable and broadcast networks from 7-11 p.m. ET, according to final same-day ratings from Nielsen. That’s a 26 percent decline from four years ago, which drew 56.92 million viewers, and the least watched election night since the ratings service began keeping total viewer tallies in 2000. Nov. 5’s coverage also drew the smallest household rating (22.6) on record. Fox News led the way with 10.32 million viewers from 8-11 p.m. ET, but all of the big four broadcast networks and big three cable news channels were down from 2020.

DATA SPOTLIGHT

Disney Tops Media Distributor Ranking

The start of football season was a boon to several media companies in September — including Disney, which once again claimed the No. 1 spot in Nielsen‘s rankings of TV distributors. Disney outlets accounted for 11.3 percent of all TV use in the United States for Nielsen’s September measurement period (which ran from Aug. 26-Sept. 29). That’s up from 9.5 percent in August and marks the company’s ninth time in the top spot in the 11 months Nielsen has shared distributor data.
