When <a href="/profile/james-blake" class="text-word" target="_blank" >James Blake</a> sent the Dreamville rapper the beat for “Lauder Too,” he reportedly said that Andre 3000 was the only other person he could imagine spitting on it. <a href="https://www.hotnewhiphop.com/157110-jid-marvels-at-andre-3000s-chonkyfire-wordplay-news" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JID broke down Andre’s verse</a> on “Chonkyfire” during a 2019 Pitchfork interview, claiming it was one of his favorite verses ever. “Coming from Atlanta, I definitely see myself in their music,” he said. “As far as the creativity, and an artist from the South with substance.” <em>The Forever Story</em> creator also credited Andre’s partner, <a href="/profile/bigboi" class="text-word" target="_blank" >Big Boi</a>, with motivating him to rap in the first place.</p> <p>The problem is, Andre 3000 doesn’t rap these days. The phrase “slow down” isn’t in his vocabulary at all. He’s essentially been releasing music nonstop every year from 2012 to today. The 2020’s, out both decades he’s been a part, have been the most kind to him in our estimation. He’s got several classics during this five year stretch such as <em>The Price Of Tea In China</em>, <em>Penalty of Leadership</em>, <em>Super Tecmo Bo</em>, among others. If you wanted to make arguments for any others you most certainly could. Overall, the Detroit native has been as dominant as they come and there’s no signs of him stopping. <a href="https://www.hotnewhiphop.com/879381-boldy-james-permanent-ink-stream" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">2025 has already been a jam-packed year,</a> dropping three tapes. <em>Murder During Drug Traffic</em>, <em>Permanent Ink</em>, <a href="https://www.hotnewhiphop.com/889445-boldy-james-chuck-strangers-token-of-appreciation-stream" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">and most recently, <em>Token of Appreciation</em>.</a></p> <p>That tape was his biggest splash of the year so far, working alongside Chuck Strangers as his producer in crime. Moreover, The <a href="/profile/alchemist" class="text-word" target="_blank" >Alchemist</a> was also involved and handled all of the finer details such as mixing and mastering. Ironically, though, Boldy James is going from working with established veterans to a “rookie.” That would Haji Outlaw, whose most known for his contributions to television programs such as <em>The Eric Andre Show</em>. He’s also a producer and comedian, hence the ties to the aforementioned show. So, Haji isn’t all that new or inexperienced. But in terms of working with other rappers, he is limited in that regard, only teaming up with Mike Shabb in the past. Still, though, Haji is able to match Boldy’s aesthetic which soulful boom-bap, in most cases. They have been making their way up the ranks as two of the more interesting acts to emerge from the state recently. And now, they have teamed up to drop a collab album. <em>8 Legged Gorilla </em>is the name of the album, and it clocks in at 12 tracks and 36 minutes in length. The cover art is a homage to King Kong as well, playing into the title smoothly. <em>8 Legged Gorilla</em> features some Louisiana flair, with the two rappers showing their charisma on tracks over some quality, bass-y production. The two sound like they have been rapping together forever. Surprisingly, they do not have much work together before this tape. Across the 36-minute runtime, the two repeatedly bring some quality work out of each other.</p> <p>Fredo Bang and TEC both drop some bars about the streets over production that varies between looking for a banger and more melodic, slower beats. The two bring a ton of energy to these tracks, as do the features they enlist. “Grim Reaper” features fellow Baton Rouge rapper <a href="/profile/kevingates" class="text-word" target="_blank" >Kevin Gates</a>. New Orleans rapper Rob49 appears on “Toosie,” the album’s second to last track. The late <a href="/profile/jaydayoungan" class="text-word" target="_blank" >JayDaYoungan</a> posthumously features on “Wyd.” And B.G., one-fourth of the legendary Hot Boys delivers a verse at the end of “Stay Ready.” It’s clear that Fredo Bang and TEC love their state, and paid tribute to it with an all-Louisiana cast. Overall, <em>8 Legged Gorilla </em>has a lot of big beats and cautionary street tales delivered in that way only Louisiana rappers can deliver. The New York-based trio is officially sharing (at least with the general public) their 1994 EP, <a href="https://www.hotnewhiphop.com/875483-de-le-soul-release-rare-1994-ep-a-tribe-called-quest-hip-hop-news" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Clear Lake Auditorium</em>.</a> When we say by the “general public,” we mean this was only given to select ears. Particular DJs were able to hear it, and it was essentially a promotional tape for their <em>Buhloone Mindstate</em> album. It was their third one and this EP “dropped” six months after it. </p> <p>Also making this a unique tape for De La Soul is that two loosies in “Sh.Fe.MC’s” and “Stix & Stonz” were a part of it. The first of those two is arguably the more coveted track as it is a collaboration with A Tribe Called Quest. Overall, <a href="https://www.hotnewhiphop.com/852583-tribe-called-quest-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame-induction-hip-hop-news" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">this is a truly special moment</a> for those who have been riding with this forward-thinking trio and their team knows it. On Instagram they wrote, “Clear Lake Audiotorium has achieved near-mythical status among collectors.” That couldn’t be truer.
