“I almost died today…but we got the room comped, didn't we babe? So that was cool." So sums up the perfect combination of drama and comedy of HBO's The White Lotus, which will return to our screens for its third season on February 16th – this time set in paradisiacal Thailand.

Like its predecessors, the small screen sensation that ignited a so-called ‘golden era’ of television is jam-packed full of madcap plots, outrageous characters and gorgeous locations. Season one took advantage of the empty hotels during lockdown, filming at the luxurious Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea. Season two managed to supersede even Hawaii's sky-high setting, shooting across picturesque Sicily and set mainly at the San Domenico Hotel in Taormina (also a Four Seasons resort).

Season three sees a whole new crew of ultra-rich holiday-makers check in to a new branch of The White Lotus Hotel (apparently undeterred by the deaths and divorces that seem to constantly crop up in the hotel chain), this time to a lush outcrop in Thailand. Actors in the cast include Harry Potter star Jason Isaacs, Sex Education's Aimee Lou Wood, Lalisa Manobal and (a return from season one) Natasha Rothwell, who will recommence her role as spa manager, Belinda Lindsey).

Natasha Rothwell (as Belinda Lindsey) is the only returning character in season three, pictured here with Dom Hetrakul.

Filming started in Thailand in February 2024

It has been confirmed that filming for the series took place in the capital city of Bangkok as well as on the islands of Phuket and Koh Samui. “We are pleased to partner with the Tourism Authority of Thailand to execute Mike White's creative vision and showcase all that the beautiful country of Thailand has to offer, as the next group of guests check in to The White Lotus,” said the executive vice president of production for HBO, Janet Graham Borba, in a statement about the series. HBO reportedly negotiated a lucrative deal with Thailand, to the tune of a 30 per cent tax rebate, which amounted to $4.4 million in actual savings. This helped to lure creators away from other potential destinations for the new season, including Japan.

The White Lotus showrunner Mike White also selected Thailand because of its spiritual and religious connections. “The first season kind of highlighted money, and then the second season is sex, and I think the third season, it would be a satirical and funny look at death and eastern religion and spirituality. And it feels like it could be a rich tapestry to do another round of White Lotus,” the series creator explained in the Unpacking bonus feature for the season two finale on HBO Max. According to HBO's Drama Chief, Francesca Orsi, Thailand also appealed to the show-runner Mike White because it allowed the plot to explore “spirituality versus the ego," which can be "set against the Eastern religion.”

Four Seasons Koh Samui

The Four Seasons Koh Samui can be found in the lush archipelago of Ang Thong.

Given that the last two series were filmed at a Four Seasons resort, it seems only natural that Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui stood in as The White Lotus Hotel Thailand for season three.

The hotel describes itself as blending ‘stunning ocean views with elegant Thai-inspired design.’ It is well-regarded as one of the most beautiful and luxurious resorts in the region, where guests can enjoy private villas set amongst the lush rolling hills of the island. And for those looking for extra privacy and splendour, the hotel offers ‘Private Residences’ for groups and families, which will most likely house the larger group parties in the show, including the fictional Ratliff family. These rooms all feature spacious terraces and private infinity pools. They even come fit with personal residential assistants to ‘take care of your every need’. One thing is for sure: we wouldn't want to take care of the whims and wants of any of the characters we've loved to hate so far in The White Lotus.

The Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas

Phuket in Thailand is known for its long stretches of beach and beautiful turquoise water: the perfect picturesque backdrop for the drama to unfold.

The Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas also reportedly served as a location for some of the filming. The hotel, described on the website as a ‘sanctuary’, prides itself on offering guests ‘seamless access to world-class dining and leisure.’ Located in between Phuket's longest beach and the spectacular Sirinath National Park, the 5-star resort can be found on the northern tip of Phuket and was reportedly built to resemble a traditional Thai village. It features 83 villas, a private beach, a restaurant in the treetops and a private lagoon. The official trailer shows Nicholas Duvernay at the hotel in a glassy pavilion surrounded (aptly) by a lotus flower pond.

Villa Jacinta in Choeng Mon, Koh Samui

Located on the calm beach region of Cheong Mon, Villa Jacinta was used as one of the luxurious private locations for the shoot. Its perch on top of the highest points of the Samujana estate offers visitors some of the best views across the Gulf of Thailand. It's unknown yet what the villa was used for in the show, but the sleek interiors and sliding glass walls that open onto the lush scenery mean this villa is glorious from every angle.

Want to live the White Lotus life (without the drama)? Well, you're in luck: the villa featured is actually available to rent via onefinestay. A spokesperson from the luxury villa rental company said: “As White Lotus fans we were excited to hear that onefinestay’s Villa Jacinta has been used as a setting for series three. With striking cubist design and incredible views across the Gulf of Thailand, it’s a real standout property that seamlessly blends Thai aesthetic with modern sophisticated design. It has a fabulous sunken seating area, two kitchens and a series of vibrant interior gardens all designed to evoke a sense of serenity.”

Bangkok

The hotel used for filming in Bangkok has not yet been named, but some scenes in the trailer show groups touring busy markets, which are very popular with visitors to the area. Though the specific locations haven't been identified yet, the Asiatique Riverfront Market, the Chatuchak Weekend Market and Khao San Road are some of the most popular tourist destinations in the area.
