Isla de Cuba (Cruiser, 1886-1898)

Isla de Cuba, a 1030-ton Isla de Luzon class cruiser, was launched at Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, in December 1886. During the Spanish-American War, she was part of the Spanish squadron in the Philippines and was sunk in the Battle of Manila Bay on 1 May 1898. Salvaged by the U.S. Navy after the war, she was commissioned as USS Isla de Cuba in 1900. In 1912, she was sold to Venezuela and served as their navy's Mariscal Sucre until 1940, when she was scrapped.

Isla de Cuba
(Spanish Cruiser, 1886-1898)

Photographed soon after completion, probably in a British port. This small cruiser was lost at Manila Bay, 1 May 1898, but was salvaged and entered U.S. Navy service under her Spanish name. She was sold in 1912, and became the Venezuelan navy ship Mariscal Sucre.

Battle of Manila Bay, 1 May 1898

Scuttled wreck of the Spanish cruiser Isla de Cuba, photographed sometime after the battle. This ship was later salvaged and became USS Isla de Cuba.
