Best Movie Ensemble in 2020

Who won IGN's best movie ensemble of 2020?

There were a bunch of movies this year that leaned on amazing ensemble casts, from the colorful, ass-kicking DC supergroup of the title in Birds of Prey to the beloved Broadway cast of Lin Manuel Miranda's Hamilton to several super-charged dramas that confronted issues of the past that still loom large today.

This is our winner for the best movie ensemble of 2020.

Best Movie Ensemble in 2020 Winner: Da 5 Bloods

Delroy Lindo, Norm Lewis, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Clarke Peters and Jonathan Majors headline a truly impressive cast in Da 5 Bloods. While the performances are stellar across the board (including an appearance by the always welcome Jean Reno), the whole thing is held together by an absolutely showpiece performance from Lindo.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

Aside from Margot Robbie's terrific return as Harley herself, Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), and Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) are all perfectly cast and utterly magnetic when they’re on screen - with Winstead’s Huntress proving to be an unexpected scene-stealer in her comparatively limited screen time. Combined with Ella Jay Basco’s Cassandra Cain and a scenery-chewing Ewan McGregor as Roman Sionis, Birds of Prey features the best ensemble cast of any DCEU to date.

Hamilton

As promised by endless hype, Hamilton comes alive with amazing performances. Lin-Manuel Miranda is mocking, mirthful, wounded, and wrathful in turn as the eponymous hero. Renee Elise Goldsberry is riveting as the witty and rueful Angelica, who delivers smirks and rapid-fire lyrics with a thrilling confidence. Phillipa Soo is hopeful, helpless, then heart-wrenching as Hamilton's wife, while Leslie Odom Jr. steals the show as the piece's self-proclaimed villain. Refusing to let us loathe Burr, Odom is jubilant as the piece's narrator, treating the role as ringmaster to a three-ring circus that is the U.S.'s dramatic origins. Though played to the cheap seats, these theatrical performances don't suffer on screen because of the expectations of a musical.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom boasts a strong ensemble - especially Viola Davis as Ma herself. But the movie is undoubtedly Chadwick Boseman's from beginning to end, as he plays the youngest member of Ma Rainey’s band, an old-jug outfit composed of Slow Drag (Michael Potts) on stand-up bass, Toledo (Glynn Turman) on piano, and Cutler (Colman Domingo) on trombone, all of whom give fantastic performances.

The Trial of the Chicago 7

As is so often the case with actors given the chance to speak Aaron Sorkin’s dialogue, everyone involved manages to make a meal of it in The Trial of the Chicago 7. This is a cast of all-stars across the board, with not a weak link to be found. While there are moments when Eddie Redmayne and Sacha Baron Cohen seem tongue-twisted by having to find an American accent to wrap around those words, they still effectively embody the poles of the ideological spectrum within the seven (and within the anti-war movement itself). Meanwhile, the poles of the justice system itself are represented by Mark Rylance as defense attorney William Kunstler and Frank Langella as Judge Julius Hoffman, while Yahya Abdul-Mateen II brings an especially memorable turn as Bobby Seale, the co-founder of the Black Panther Party.
