Plugging AI skill gaps critical for future of shipbuilding industry

Addressing anticipated skill gaps in artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and automation is essential to the future of the shipbuilding sector, according to a new report by the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS), operated by the University of Strathclyde and based at the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland (AMIDS) in Renfrewshire.

Developed with industry partners and Innovate UK’s Workforce Foresighting Hub, the report highlights the need to equip the workforce with the skills required as the industry evolves and adopts new technology including Continue reading “Plugging AI skill gaps critical for future of shipbuilding industry”

BIMCO supports IGP&I’s new electronic bill of lading approval process

The International Group of P&I Clubs has introduced a new process for the approval of electronic bill of lading systems
The International Group of P&I Clubs has introduced a new process for the approval of electronic bill of lading systems

The first question on shipowners’ lips when asked to use electronic bills of lading should be “is the eBL platform approved by my P&I Club?” To make this “discovery” process easier, the International Group of P&I Clubs has introduced a new process for the approval of electronic bill of lading systems. This new process takes into account recent legislative developments that recognise electronic bills of lading as equivalent to their paper counterparts. System providers who seek IG approval and meet the necessary requirements will now be easily identifiable on the Group’s website. This streamlined approach is designed to benefit both members and system providers, making the approval process more efficient. Bureau Veritas says that IACS has decided to launch its own CIC

IACS has decided to launch its own CIC to record results of testing of emergency power supply on individual ships, according to Bureau Veritas.
With the release of a bulletin on the subject, the Tokyo MoU has informed ship operators, shipmasters, classification societies, maritime administrations, their officers, investigators and technical advisors of the potential risk of testing of automatic start of emergency source of electrical power and connection to the emergency switchboard (SOLAS Ch. II-1 Regulation 42 / 43) using simulated Continue reading “Bureau Veritas guidance on IACS CIC on emergency power supply testing”

AkzoNobel unveils new updates to Intertrac Vision coatings performance prediction tool

Intertrac Vision, its “big data” tool designed to provide accurate and transparent predictions on the fuel and CO2 savings
Intertrac Vision, its “big data” tool designed to provide accurate and transparent predictions on the fuel and CO2 savings

AkzoNobel’s International marine coatings brand has announced a series of updates to Intertrac Vision, its “big data” tool designed to provide accurate and transparent predictions on the fuel and CO2 savings potential of fouling control coatings.

The latest enhancements include CII rating prediction, EU ETS cost impact and detailed breakdowns of cost savings across multiple drydockings, all designed to further support data-driven decision making. Intertrac Vision analyzes insights from more than 200,000 drydocks and 10,000 vessel operators. Pairing this track record with machine learning modeling, the tool forecasts the contribution of coating performance for a vessel’s in-service period and evaluates the return on investment based on the specified vessel type and Continue reading “AkzoNobel unveils new updates to Intertrac Vision coatings performance prediction tool”

Charting the Course Ahead: The Future of AI in Marine Cargo Survey Businesses

The marine industry has long relied on the expertise and knowledge of cargo surveyors to ensure the safe and efficient transport of goods across the world’s oceans. In today’s rapidly evolving information age, knowledge and expertise is not just power—it is a strategic asset that drives innovation, growth, and competitive advantage. As marine survey businesses navigate an increasingly complex landscape, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionise the way knowledge is harnessed, analysed and applied across all industries, and the marine survey industry is no different.

The foundation of knowledge businesses – such as marine surveying- lies in the ability to efficiently access, organise, and interpret vast amounts of data and information and then use that data and information productively and profitably. AI technologies, such as natural language processing, machine learning and semantic analysis are empowering organizations to use data and extract meaningful insights from unstructured data sources such as text documents, research papers and online content. Engine Retrofit Report 2023 finds lack of yard capacity could compromise retrofit ambitions

Engine Retrofit Report 2023 has been published by Lloyd's Register
Engine Retrofit Report 2023 has been published by Lloyd’s Register

The Engine Retrofit Report 2023 from Lloyd’s Register (LR) has found that a shortage of repair yards with sufficient experience in conversions may hinder the take up of alternative fuel technology by the existing fleet.

Applying alternative fuels to existing ships research on the state of technology, integration and compliance, alongside the business case for retrofitting vessels, has found that repair yard capability and capacity concerns could thwart the uptake of alternative fuel technology onboard existing ships.
