In 1988 Die Hard was released into an action movie landscape cluttered with super-jacked good guys, commie backed bad guys and jingoistic success. John McTiernan's film rejected many of the decade's dominant genre archetypes and rewrote the book on what heroes should look like, how villains should behave and whether montages need to be a thing. Popularity lead to imitation, estranged wives will be menaced, bad guys will lose their C4 and you won’t believe how many mock McClaine's will crawl through air vents.
