It was saddled with a terrible ending by its screenwriters, Glen and Les Charles (creators of TV’s Cheers), and blitzed at the box office by The Matrix. Its genesis is amusingly described by its producer, Art Linson, in his memoir What Just Happened? Blanchett plays the wife of hotshot young air traffic controller John Cusack, who has an affair with Angelina Jolie – who is married to Cusack’s workplace rival, Billy Bob Thornton.

Armitage got his start in the entertainment industry at the start of the 1970s, writing the film Gas-s-s for producer Roger Corman and then going on to write and direct Private Duty Nurses and write Night Call Nurses, also for Corman. By the end of the ’70s, he had written and directed the films Hit Man and Vigilante Force, as well as the TV movie Hot Rods, and wrote the scripts for the film Darktown Strutters and an episode of the TV series Monty Nash. The 95-year-old legend and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 63, were found dead on Wednesday, alongside their dog, in their Santa Fe, N.M., home. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office initially said foul play is not suspected, and there's an "active and ongoing investigation" into their deaths. In a search warrant affidavit released Thursday, authorities said their deaths are "suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation," and that there were "no obvious signs of a gas leak."

George Armitage, director of 90s indie hits Grosse Pointe Blank and Miami Blues, as well as Hit Man, the 70s blaxploitation remake of Get Carter, has died aged 82. Variety reported he died on 15 February in Playa del Rey in California.

Armitage started out in TV, working on the celebrated TV soap opera Peyton Place, then broke into features via Roger Corman’s micro-budget studio New World in the late 1960s. He subsequently specialised in crime films: Grosse Pointe Blank, which starred John Cusack and Minnie Driver, was his biggest commercial hit, and his final directorial credit was the Elmore Leonard adaptation The Big Bounce in 2004.

George Armitage, the filmmaker behind Miami Blues and Grosse Pointe Blank, has died at the age of 83. His son, Brent Armitage, confirmed that he passed away on February 15 in Playa del Rey, California.

9 years after the release of the first film, the “Detective Chinatown” franchise is still going strong, as the fourth installment takes it back in time to San Francisco’s Chinatown circa 1900. With the reinforcement of mega-star Chow Yun Fat as latest cast member (only his second film in 8 years), the film stormed the Chinese New Year box office and made more than 250 millions dollars in its first five days of release alone (and more than 400 million as of this writing). It’s also got a brilliant punch up between Cusack and his real life martial arts teacher Benny ‘The Jet’ Urquidez, who was still very much in fine fettle over a decade after his two iconic bouts with Jackie Chan in Wheels On Meals and Dragons Forever.

What is the focus of this article is the underrated 1997 comedy Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion, which saw Mira Sorvino and Friends alum Lisa Kudrow play the titular pair, outcasts who decide to lie about their success in life at their high school reunion.

Chinese New Year box office started with a bang today in China, as Maoyan estimates 1.8B yuan ($248.3M) was generated for all films on day-one of the holiday period. This would mark a new milestone that well exceeds 2021’s previous first-day New Year record of 1.69M yuan.

For its part, Imax topped itself on Wednesday, seeing a Cny day-one record-breaking haul of $12M, besting its previous high of $11M in 2021. With 5% of the Cny box office so far, and on less than 1% of total screens, Imax captured its biggest percentage of the first-day results ever. Attendance for Imax was also at a new peak with 1.2M admissions nationwide.

The back end of the 1990s saw a pair of high school reunion comedies hit the big screen, both of which remain worth seeking out. On the one hand, there was John Cusack playing a hitman returning for his school reunion in Grosse Pointe Blank. On the other, Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow headlined the wonderfully offbeat Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion. Neither fully ignited the box office, both though found their fans.

There have been a number of different kinds of movie time machines — from phone booths, to ancient Japanese scepters, to a cocaine trafficker’s wacky sports car. But it wasn’t until 2010 that a character broke the time barrier using a magical jacuzzi.

Hot Tub Time Machine was a goofy, but mostly enjoyable comedy that found John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke traveling back in time to the 1980s. At least it nailed the complex nature of meddling with the timeline in a way that few other time-travel films do.

Because it was a modest success, Hot Tub Time Machine spawned a sequel. And it’s not great. In fact, it’s quite bad. Even John Cusack didn’t want to return for Hot Tub Time Machine 2, and that guy once made a movie in which cell phone signals turn people into telepathic zombies.

The fourth installment in China’s wildly popular Detective Chinatown action comedy franchise has locked down day-and-date theatrical release plans in North America, Europe and Southeast Asia. The highly anticipated feature will open around the world on Jan. 29, the same date it unfurls at home in China on the first day of the lucrative Lunar New Year holiday.

The previous three films in the franchise — spanning 2015-2021 and all directed by Chen Sicheng — collectively earned over $1.3 billion in cinemas, with the vast majority coming from the domestic Chinese market.

Martial arts sequences in films are often impressive, but they take a lot of work behind the scenes, with a few actors putting in the work to learn martial arts to pull off such scenes. Many of the iconic martial arts films and scenes that come to mind are carried out by martial arts legends like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jean-Claude Van Damme, but these actors had already trained in martial arts years before they got their start in films.

Other actors such as Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, and Michelle Yeoh learned martial arts in preparation for a particular project, with only a few continuing to be known for their other martial arts films after the fact. The commitment to the physicality that comes with a martial arts role isn't always necessary. Exclusive: Tom Holland has made a deal to star in and produce The Partner, a drama based on the John Grisham 1997 bestseller that The Imitation Game’s Graham Moore is scripting for Universal.

According to a Nov. 13 post by Bluesky CEO Jay Graber, the site had 6 million users in late August, nearly 11 million in late October and hit 15 million users on Nov. 15. It added another 5 million users in just five days, with the explosive growth seen since Nov. 5, the day of the election, accelerating.

Andras Hamori, the Hungarian film and television producer whose credits included Atom Egoyan’s The Sweet Hereafter, István Szabó’s Sunshine and David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ, has died. He was 71.

Hamori died Sept. 2 in Budapest after a long illness that prevented him from working in recent years, his friend Mia Taylor announced.

Hamori, who worked out of Toronto early in his career and was a partner in Alliance Entertainment, also guided the cult horror classic The Gate (1987), starring Stephen Dorff in his first major role; Stephen Frears’ Chéri (2009), starring Michelle Pfeiffer; and the 2014 History Channel miniseries Houdini, starring Adrien Brody.
