Pamela Salem, who portrayed Miss Moneypenny in Never Say Never Again opposite Sean Connery in his final turn as James Bond, has died. She was 80.
Salem died Wednesday in Surfside, Florida, according to Big Finish Productions, for whom she participated in several audio productions.
“Whenever there was a Big Finish recording for her, she’d fly in from Miami on her own steam, without fuss or fanfare, and appear at the studio armed with the warmest smiles, the biggest hugs and often presents,” producer David Richardson said in a statement.
For the BBC’s Doctor Who, Salem played the sandminer pilot Lish Toos on 1977’s “The Robots of Death” and Professor Rachel Jensen on 1988’s “Remembrance of the Daleks.” She reprised both roles for Big Finish in the audio drama series The Robots and radio spinoff series Counter Measures.

Tfh Fearless Leader Joe Dante very astutely tip-toes around Larry Cohen’s stylistic filmmaking identity early on in King Cohen: The Wild World of Filmmaker Larry Cohen. Dante notes, “I would hardly call him the John Cassavetes of exploitation movies, but he does have a certain raw, visceral, realistic style.” Indeed, Larry Cohen’s signature film, Q: The Winged Serpent (1982), feels like what would happen if John Cassavetes directed a Ray Harryhausen film. And movie fans the world over are all the better for that most unlikely of authorial fusions!

One of the loopier careers in and on the fringes of mainstream Hollywood is paid loving tribute in Steve Mitchell’s documentary “King Cohen.” There’s nothing particularly inspired about Mitchell’s treatment here — he’s directed a lot of DVD extras, and this first feature feels like a plus-sized version of one — but there’s considerable entertainment value in its subject. Particularly these days, when most commercial cinema seems given over to cookie-cutter sequels, spinoffs and remakes, a wellspring of original (not to mention frequently bizarre) ideas like those of producer-director-writer Larry Cohen seems akin to a fabled magical fountain.
Even back in his 1970s and ’80s heyday, when the ebbing drive-in theater market and growing presence of home-video got a lot of goofy genre exercises greenlit, Cohen’s films were notable for their eccentric individuality. Those who haven’t tasted the hybrid delights of “God Told Me To,...

I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but I can often spend hours upon hours trawling through iTunes looking for new movies to buy… Usually I’ll randomly come across a title I haven’t seen in years and use the “Cast & Crew” links to make my way down the rabbit hole to the more obscure side of Apple’s digital movie service.
Now whilst many will decry that iTunes is a terrible VOD service due to Apple’s desire to lock its audience to their platforms, if you have an Apple TV or iPad be aware – there are some truly obscure films hidden away in the depths of the vast collection of movies. Some of which have been made available in the UK for the first time since VHS and a Lot that have been added to the service in their original uncut form!

Never Say Never Again
Directed by Irvin Kershner
Written by Lorenzo Semple Jr.
United Kingdom, 1983
Never Say Never Again is, in many ways, the red-headed stepchild of the Bond family. Made by a different set of producers than the other 23 Bond films that had been made previously, the movie cannot be found on any Bond boxset, and really shares nothing with its fellow Bond films outside of the names of certain characters, as by 1983, Connery himself had long since hung up the tuxedo in favour of Roger Moore (whose Octopussy, which did come from Albert Broccoli and Co. , had been released earlier that very year, giving audiences a good chance to compare the two actors playing the same character). The primary question of this movie, then, becomes whether or not the Bond franchise benefits from being molded by a different pair of hands at its very core, and the answer...

Sean Connery's last appearance as James Bond, and the last 'unofficial' 007 movie. We revisit Never Say Never Again...
So does this count? Never Say Never Again stirs many arguments by shaking up the official order, splitting fans on the issue of its legitimacy. Ruins pub quiz questions such as ‘How many actors have played M?’ due to the inevitable argument whether Edward Fox should be numbered. Put such issues aside and enjoy what remains: a sly, witty semi-pastiche that doesn’t attempt to recapture past glories but can easily hold its own alongside Diamonds Are Forever and Octopussy. And with much less swimming than Thunderball.
The Villain: Ignore Emilo: Maximillian Largo is his own maniac. Short, tubby, lanky blond hair receding, Largo is Draco Malfoy gone to seed. Easily visualised shuffling around Comic Con, accompanied by Mr Kidd and the reformed Jaws. Yet Largo is one of the film’s strengths.

From The Time Machine to The War of the Worlds, legendary sci-fi writer H.G. Wells brought the spectacular to life on the printed page. Tom Laughlin: ‘Billy Jack’ movie franchise comes to an end; U.S. government, Hollywood studios blamed (See previous post: “‘Billy Jack’: Tom Laughlin Revolutionized Film Distribution Sytem.”) In 1975, Tom Laughlin’s self-produced Western The Master Gunfighter — a remake of Hideo Gosha’s samurai actioner Goyokin, co-starring Ron O’Neal and Barbara Carrera — bombed at the box office after opening at more than 1,000 locations. Laughlin reportedly had spent $3.5 million to market the $3.5 million production, having hired John Rubel, assistant secretary of defense under Robert McNamara, to plan the film’s distribution tactics. Financially depleted and embroiled in more lawsuits against Warner Bros., Laughlin embarked on the Billy Jack series’ fourth — and, as it turned out — final film, Billy Jack Goes to Washington. A 1977 Frank Capra Jr.-produced reboot of Frank Capra’s 1939 classic Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Laughlin’s final directing effort was barely seen even in its drastically edited form.

Whenever a new James Bond movie hits theaters, it’s an opportunity to bring up one of the greatest questions in the history of popular cinema: Which film about the dapper British superspy is the very best film. Which leads to a natural follow-up question: Which one is the worst? I grew up in a solidly pro-Connery household, and my personal favorite is the film that initially ended Connery’s run with the character: You Only Live Twice. After starting off with one of the series’ best openings (Bond gets killed!) and my personal favorite Bond theme song (sung by...

While on the interview circuit for the last Expendables film, Sylvester Stallone cited 1989's Batman as the downfall of the action film. "The action movies changed radically when it became possible to Velcro your muscles on," adding "I didn't have to go to the gym for all those years." The man had a point. No matter how dumb, repetitive, or insultingly ridiculous the films of the period got, they remain watchable due to their 'authority of authenticity' as producer Sam Spiegel used to call it, and nowhere is that more evident than in Lone Wolf McQuade, starring that parody of American virility, Chuck Norris.
As you can tell from the title McQuade's a real social butterfly, who happens to take kindly to drug dealers, terrorists, and people who look at him sideways. Except, of course, it's actually the opposite of all that. Pretty much everything in McQuade's life can be...

To mark the 50th Anniversary of one of the most successful movie franchises of all time and with filming almost complete on James Bond’s 23rd official outing in Skyfall due for release later this year, I have been tasked with taking a retrospective look at the films that turned author Ian Fleming’s creation into one of the most recognised and iconic characters in film history.
For Octopussy, the thirteenth official James Bond film, 1983 proved to be rather unlucky. After a lengthy court battle with the co-writer of Thunderball, Kevin McClory, Albert R. For Octopussy, the thirteenth official James Bond film, 1983 proved to be rather unlucky. After a lengthy court battle with the co-writer of Thunderball, Kevin McClory, Albert R. Broccoli’s Eon Productions had lost the right to use Bond’s nemesis Blofeld and his organisation Spectre in any of their films. McClory had been trying since 1974 to get his own rival Bond film made but due to a lack of financial backing and legal action from United Artists and the Fleming Trustees his project...

Who needs real friends when you've got a vivid imagination? Help us identify cinema's most memorable made-up mates
This week's Clip Joint is by Norman Walton from Warwickshire.
Think you can do better than Norman? If you've got an idea for a future Clip joint, send a message to [email protected]
It's always good to have friends you can count on. However it's even better if you make them up. Whether it's to help you regain control in your life, cope with stress or just offer a well-rounded argument on why the local pimp/drug dealer should be put down like a dog, imaginary friends can be handy.
However, as they are conjured up from the recesses of (often) troubled minds, they do not need to adhere to the rules of the real world and the boundaries of what they can do are only restricted by the limits of their protagonist's imaginations.

Some shows sell themselves, and certainly TNT’s revamp of the iconic primetime sudser Dallas would seem to be one of them. But whoever got paid big bucks to develop the advertising campaign that kicks off Monday in New York City’s Time Square should be fired, pronto.
According to an article in the New York Times, the billboards will feature a 46-foot-tall shower curtain featuring the shadow of a man wearing a stetson and the words “They’re back.” The paper goes on to explain that on April 2, “the curtain parts to reveal the cast of the new version.” The tag line on the new billboards will read, “They’re back. And no, you’re not dreaming.”
Call me crazy, but why in the world would anyone want to create not one but two billboards which are specifically designed to invoke memories of one of the most infamous (and...

Chuck Norris may be famous for spending a few years playing Walker, Texas Ranger on CBS, but that wasn't his first, or best, role as one of the Lone Star State's revered lawmen. No, Norris played a Texas Ranger years earlier, way back in 1983, when he starred in Lone Wolf McQuade -- one of the venerable action stars' best films.
McQuade was an interesting evolutionary moment in Norris' career -- the film where he went from a clean-cut good guy to the beard-sporting badass he's been ever since. You know all those stupid Chuck Norris jokes the Internet loves so much? Lone Wolf McQuade is the literal embodiment of every one of them. Yet, when you get right down to it, this is a genuinely good action film. Norris plays Texas Ranger J.J. McQuade, a lone wolf cop out to avenge his partner's death and stop a gun smuggler...

Call them "cult classics." "Guilty pleasures." "Comfort movies." We all have a mental rolodex of flicks that may not be terribly popular but, for one reason or another, they resonate in a very special way. Maybe you saw it at the right moment. Maybe you just see gold where everyone else sees feces. Whatever the case, these are the special favorites that you keep stashed away for sick days. Here are some of ours.
My favorite superhero film of all time is called "Condorman." You've probably never heard of it. It's not an Oscar-nominated picture. It's not particularly well-liked. It isn't based on a comic book. It isn't available on DVD, at least not in the United States. Until recently, I hadn't even seen it since elementary school. To most, it's the very definition of movie theater trash.
To me, it's cinematic gold.

Milk (Universal) Sean Penn deservedly captured his second Best Actor Oscar (and Dustin Lance Black a statuette for his original screenplay) in director Gus Van Sant’s portrait of San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to hold public office in the U.S. Alternately heartbreaking, infuriating and very funny, a film that both captures a bygone era and is still very timely. Fine support from Josh Brolin, Victor Garber, James Franco and Emile Hirsch. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Three featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS 5.1 surround.
Slumdog Millionaire (20th Century Fox) The Best Picture of 2008 is a kinetic, clever audience-pleaser about a determined lad (Dev Patel) from the slums of Mumbai, who has his chance at literal and financial redemption as a contestant on India’s version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. June is going to be a busy month for DVD releases. We're going to get supernatural horrors, Italian shockers, and Sci-Fi Channel schlockers; not to mention one hell of an Asylum mocker. Here's a taste of things to come.
What better place to begin than with Lionsgate's June 16th release of Richard Friedman's Born. Starring Joan Severence, Denise Crosby, and Kane Hodder, it's another one of those demon baby in the womb horror flicks. This time out a virginal 21-year old (Alison Brie) wakes up impregnated by a demon (Hodder, of course); the demonic baby eventually overtakes her mind and sends her on a killing spree. I've come across some reviews of Born online, and let's just say most would have preferred this film to be retitled Abort. Only the best from Lionsgate.

Original Bond girl Ursula Andress has beat out competition from Halle Berry and Kim Basinger to be named 007s sexiest siren, according to a new online poll.

The superspy franchise, which boasts 22 completed films, has seen close to 100 fiesty females take on the coveted part.
Sexy star Halle Berry tailed the actress in the second spot, after she played Jinx in 2002's Die Another Day opposite Pierce Brosnan.
Basinger got the third spot for her role as Domino Petachi in 1983's Never Say Never Again, in the Moviefone.com survey.
