When it comes to Mike White's TV credits that are not The White Lotus, most people would probably name the gone-too-soon Enlightened, his early work as a writer on Dawson's Creek and Freaks and Geeks, or even his reality stints on The Amazing Race (twice) and Survivor. But one that hardly ever comes up is Pasadena.
The Fox prime-time soap was the first series White created. Named after his California hometown, the show had the nascent marks of what everyone loves about The White Lotus now: a mysterious death, backstabbing, secrets, privileged white people, and even sexual tension between — yes — siblings. It starred Dana Delany as the matriarch of the wealthy Greeleys. After her daughter, Lily (Alison Lohman), witnesses a murder, family secrets are uncovered. The cast also included Martin Donovan, Balthazar Getty, Mark Valley, Christopher Marquette, and Natasha Gregson Wagner. Diane Keaton even directed the pilot. Pasadena got...

The latest in our series of writers on their go-to comfort watches is a look back to Woody Allen’s smart and nimble 1993 comedy
Some sounds are immediately comforting. Gulls, trains, a kettle. The opening chords of I Happen to Like New York, which, despite Bobby Short’s vocals escalating in volume and emphasis Alarmingly Fast, signal the start of one of Woody Allen’s loveliest little pictures.
This 1993 comedy is like an unaffected Annie Hall – an impromptu reunion for Allen and Diane Keaton, playing essentially more functioning versions of those characters, 15 odd years on. Impromptu because although the first seeds of the idea came from an early draft of that 1977 film, the fairly elaborate plot was only properly written years later as a vehicle for Mia Farrow. She and Allen’s split during the end of the shoot on their previous film, 1992’s Husbands and Wives, kiboshed that plan.

Winfield was known as “The King of Kustoms,” and his most famous creations include the iconic Galileo shuttlecraft and the Jupiter 8 for Star Trek — the latter seen in the episode “Bread and Circuses” — and the “spinners” for Blade Runner, which was nominated for the Special Effects Oscar. He also built the Catmobile for TV’s Batman and gadget cars for Get Smart! and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. during the Bond-fueled spy craze of the 1960s.

As with fellow legendary families like the Barrymores and Fondas, the Bridges are undeniably acting royalty in Tinseltown, with father Lloyd Bridges trailblazing his way in the entertainment industry and sons Beau and Jeff following in his talented footsteps. The big and small-screen star appeared in over 150 feature films throughout his more than 50 years in the business, starring in a slew of hits like Sahara, High Noon, Airplane!, and Hotshots! (among countless others) and programs including Sea Hunt and The Lloyd Bridges Show during his sensational career. In 1965, Bridges continued his television takeover when he headlined the shamefully underrated Western The Loner.

Katie Aselton’s fourth film as director is begging for a spoiler. That would explain a lot but also give away too much. Luckily, the big reveal comes 20 minutes into this sensitively played yet too-obvious drama about a couple who go to the desert to regroup and look ahead to an altered future. Aselton plays Erin, whose mood at first veers with annoying abruptness between mournful and happy. Daveed Diggs is Charlie, full of smiling, even-tempered charm. If Charlie seems too good to be true, he is.
Aselton’s films include The Freebie (2010), arguably her best and a very different marriage story, and most recently Mack & Rita (2022) with Diane Keaton, a critical flop she didn’t write. She plays to her strengths and her indie roots in Magic Hour, directing herself and the other actors to natural, likable performances.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall during the writing process that sparked Katie Aselton’s fourth directorial effort, “Magic Hour.” Written alongside her real-life husband (and fellow filmmaker) Mark Duplass, Aselton has made it clear in press materials that the film, about a loving if troubled married couple (played by Aselton and Daveed Diggs) isn’t explicitly about her actual marriage. But it’s also not not about her and Duplass’ long-running relationship. Still, once you see where Aselton and Duplass’ script takes their characters, the differentiation becomes easier to swallow, if not all the more intriguing.
No spoilers here, but suffice it to say, it’s thrilling to wonder at what point in their chatting Aselton and Duplass landed on the spine of the story, one that also serves as a very big twist and an ambitious swing. And, yes, this twist does come early in the film,...

Kieran Culkin has won the Academy Award for best supporting actor for his performance in “A Real Pain.”
In his speech, he brought up the infamous moment when, after winning the 2024 Emmy Award for best actor for HBO’s “Succession,” he asked his wife, Jazz Charton, to have a third child — which he did only because she’d promised to have another kid if he won the Emmy, not thinking he would.
“After the show, we’re walking through a parking lot … and she goes, ‘Oh, God, I did say that!'” Culkin said. “‘I guess I owe you a third kid.’ And I turned to her, and I said, ‘Really, I want four.’ She turned to me — I swear to God, this happened there’s just over a year ago — she said, ‘I will give you four when you win an Oscar.'”

The Godfathertrilogy is one of cinema's greatest achievements, and even decades later serves as an inspiration for many mobster films. Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece traces the Corleone crime family across generations, from its rise under patriarchal Vito Corleone to its complicated evolution under his reluctant son Michael. What makes these films particularly remarkable is their consistent excellence despite spanning 18 years of production (1972-1990), bringing together extraordinary performances, meticulous period detail, and themes that resonate across cultures and generations.
While many consider the trilogy a definitive portrait of organized crime in America, at its heart, it's a story about family; the one everyone is born into, and the one shaped by circumstances. The genius of Coppola's vision was maintaining narrative and thematic coherence across all three films, partly achieved through a core group of actors who appeared in each installment. Just five performers have the distinction of appearing in all three Godfather films,...

In the 1980s, Vision Quest star Matthew Modine was the apple of the studio system’s eye. Coming off a half-dozen roles in a two-year span, Modine was having a pancake breakfast with David Alan Grier, one of his co-stars from Robert Altman’s Streamers (1983), when a fellow patron at West Hollywood’s The Source Restaurant greeted him from afar with an f-bomb and a glower.
“David looked over his shoulder and said, ‘Oh, that’s Val Kilmer. He’s a really nice guy.’ He got up and started talking to Val, and then I said to him, ‘My name’s Matthew.’ And he said, ‘Yeah, I know who you are,’” Modine tells The Hollywood Reporter in support of Vision Quest’s 40th anniversary. “I was on a run from Private School and Streamers to Vision Quest and Mrs. Soffel, and while Val could have easily been cast in those movies,...

While Netflix is constantly adding things to its vast library, the streamer also has to get rid of things too. One can assume that Netflix has many large servers to house all the movies and series that we get to see. But maybe those servers begin to lack room, so some things have to go.
This week is not too bad for having to say goodbye to some items. The 21st is by far the saddest day. Southpaw is a fantastic film starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a boxer who must turn his life around after a tragedy occurs. It is a bit too by note at times, but the acting makes up for any lag in the story.
Book Club also leaves on that day. There is also little doubt as to the acting ability of the cast. The film features Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen.

Spoiler alert: The crazy, unpredictable Oscar season? Still crazy. Still unpredictable.
Fresh off a one-two punch weekend where “Anora” cleaned up at the PGA and DGA Awards, the BAFTAs decided to stir the pot with their own take on the race. If history tells us anything, it’s that BAFTA can be either a crystal ball or a red herring.
In 2024, every BAFTA winner (except for visual effects) went on to win the Oscar, making it the most predictive year in recent memory. The year before, however, BAFTA charted its own path — only “Everything Everywhere All at Once” editor Paul Rogers repeated at the Oscars. So, with the final Oscar voting closing on Tuesday, Feb. 18, let’s break down the key takeaways from BAFTA’s curveballs and what they could mean for Hollywood’s biggest night.

Tony Roberts, the actor who collaborated with such filmmakers as Woody Allen and Sidney Lumet, has died. He was 85.
The Broadway actor’s daughter and sole survivor Nicole Barley confirmed Roberts death to The New York Times after he died on Friday at his Manhattan home following complications with lung cancer.
In Play It Again, Sam (1972), Annie Hall (1977), Stardust Memories (1980) and Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), Roberts was known for playing Allen’s nonchalant friend, balancing the auteur and star’s anxious onscreen presence.
The actor also appeared in Lumet’s Serpico (1973) and Just Tell Me What You Want (1980).
Roberts’ other film credits include Star Spangled Girl (1971), The Taking of Pelham 123 (1974) and Amityville 3-D (1983), as well as episodes of shows like The Love Boat, Trapper John, M.D., Matlock, The Carol Burnett Show, All My Children and Law & Order.

Image Source: Paramount Pictures Hollywood’s track record with middle-aged actresses has often left much to be desired, casting younger stars in roles while sidelining seasoned talent. But in 1996, The First Wives Club bucked that trend in spectacular fashion. The film, powered by the dynamic trio of Diane Keaton, Bette Midler, and Goldie Hawn—each over 50 at the time—stood as a bold statement that women of any age could shine in leading roles. Not only was the film a commercial success, topping the U.S. box office for three consecutive weeks and surpassing the $100 million mark (a rare feat in 1996), but it also deeply resonated with audiences. Its themes of empowerment, friendship, and resilience struck a chord, proving that stories centered on mature, talented women were not only relevant but in high demand. For the industry, the movie’s triumph carried a message—viewers were more than ready to...

Being a Hollywood icon certainly doesn't make you immune from a critical and box office flop. In 2024 alone, the likes of Joaquin Phoenix and Cate Blanchett were major parts of two of the year's biggest failures in Joker: Folie á Deux and Borderlands, proving that even the finest of performers is always teetering on the edge of a comically poor choice. Back in 2008, one such icon made a movie she'd possibly rather forget, with Diane Keaton starring in Callie Khouri's crime comedy, Mad Money, based on a screenplay by Glenn Gers and loosely inspired by the 2001 British drama Hot Money.

When people discuss the best movie performers of all time, there are a select few names that are typically thrown out for the Mount Rushmore of actors. For the Academy Award-loving crowd, the easiest answers are Meryl Streep, Daniel Day-Lewis, Denzel Washington, Marlon Brando, and Katherine and Audrey Hepburn, among others. The blockbuster lovers of the world will throw out equally valid names like Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Sigourney Weaver, and Harrison Ford. While these names are the ones most commonly thrown out by the general populace, genre movie lovers have their own subset of legends that they look up to and admire.

For the first time in 47 years, all five Best Actress Oscar nominees hail from Best Picture nominees.
The Best Actress lineup was the top five in the odds: Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance), and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here). Four of those films were widely predicted to score Best Picture nominations except for I’m Still Here, which was in 13th place in the odds; but in the biggest surprise of the day, the Brazilian feature made the cut on Thursday. The other Best Picture nominees are The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, and Nickel Boys.
The last time the Best Actress and Best Picture lineups aligned was during the 1977-78 season when Diane Keaton (Annie Hall) won Best Actress over Jane Fonda (Julia), Marsha Mason (The Goodbye Girl), and The Turning Point stars Anne Bancroft and Shirley MacLaine.

It's a little-known fact that George Lucas had a lot of incredible influences and support throughout the early years of his career which led to his creation of Star Wars. On the one hand, previous science fiction epics such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dune, and Flash Gordon had a lot of influence on the young artist. Meanwhile, a student of cinema, Lucas had inspirations that included Akira Kurosawa and Stanley Kubrick, as well as other renowned filmmakers. However, his most important influences came from his greatest supporters during the New Hollywood Era of cinema. In the 1970s, a pool of young cinephiles were beginning to have a voice of their own and started making movies at a time when the studios were actually allowing directors to do what they wanted. Some of the greats like Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Francis Ford Coppola came from this era of filmmaking.

Two days after David Lynch’s passing, it’s still hard to believe the most influential filmmaker of our time is gone. It’s also hard to believe that Lynch, whose death at age 78 was shared by his family on January 16, only shot three features with cinematographer Frederick Elmes: “Eraserhead,” “Blue Velvet,” and “Wild at Heart.” The alchemical match between director and Dp remains one of the defining collaborations of Lynch’s career, with Elmes crystallizing Lynch’s nightmarish and entirely sui generis vision of the American underbelly in all those films. The best Mandy Moore movies and TV shows perfectly demonstrate how the singer-songwriter made the transition from parts in lighthearted teen rom-coms to leading grounded and emotional dramas. Born in New Hampshire in 1984, Mandy Moore first rose to fame as a pop singer with singles like 1999’s “Candy” from her debut album So Real. However, within a few years, she’d make the transition to acting, starting with a minor voice role in 2001’s Dr. Dolittle 2.
While appearing in a film alongside Eddie Murphy so early in her career was an achievement, it was her role as Lana in The Princess Diaries the same year that proved the pop star was also an incredibly talented actor. Before long, Mandy Moore was leading cases in films like 2002’s A Walk to Remember and 2003’s How to Deal. As the decades progressed, she began to take on more mature roles that further highlighted her range,...

Sofia Coppola got a lot of negative press for her performance as Mary Corleone in The Godfather Part III, but she’d previously played a small role (literally) in the first movie, too. When Francis Ford Coppola cast his daughter to play one of the lead roles in the final chapter of The Godfather trilogy, he was criticized for a nepotistic bias. Upon the movie’s release in 1990, critics lambasted Sofia Coppola’s work, with some even claiming that her supposedly wooden acting ruined the film.
But not everyone realizes that this wasn’t Sofia Coppola’s first appearance in The Godfather cast. It was her first time playing a major character with speaking lines, but it wasn’t her first time playing a member of the Corleone family in her father’s iconic trilogy. 18 years before she starred in The Godfather Part III, she had appeared alongside Al Pacino...

While film is undoubtedly one of the premier art forms in the world, it simultaneously serves as an escape from the real world for countless movie lovers. After a hard day, sometimes all a viewer needs is to be immersed in a fictional world and take their mind off of their real-world troubles. While most viewers will opt for a fantastical adventure story to completely detach themselves from reality, sometimes the most eye-opening escape can be grounded entirely. Fantasy stories are fantastic in their own right, but there is magic and whimsy in the real world for those with eyes to see. It’s Oscar night 1977, and all the biggest stars in the galaxy are excited to see the biggest movie of all time take home some gold! But when that envelope opened, the words “George Lucas and Star Wars” were not said… instead it was “Woody Allen and Annie Hall”. The biggest movie in the universe was destroyed by a low-budget rom-com about some girl who wears a tie. It was a funny little movie, and it was a funny little thing that the man of the hour was nowhere to be found when the unholy ceremony called his name. This champion of a writer/director was not in Hollywood that night but on the other side of the country at a small club in New York, playing a gig with his jazz buddies. Woody Allen doesn’t care about awards or nominations (even though he has the most ever) – he...

There’s always a hidden agenda, an unseen twist, and a voice waiting to speak out. Kjersti Flaa, the journalist, has had enough of the ‘blind support’ that seems to overshadow critical thinking. Her recent latest comments hit the entertainment world like a lightning bolt, as she accuses Blake Lively of hypocrisy, particularly in her dealings with the controversial filmmaker Woody Allen.

Flaa’s outburst comes after a series of lawsuits have embroiled Hollywood heavyweights like Justin Baldoni, who recently filed a lawsuit against The New York Times and allegedly hinted at future legal actions targeting Lively herself.
But it’s the accusations about Lively’s ties to Allen that are sparking the most heated conversations. Speaking out in a video, Flaa expressed her disbelief at how people blindly support women—without truly looking at the bigger picture. She...

Many, many years before Kieran Culkin won an Emmy Award for his role as Roman Roy in Succession, he had an on-set experience that was less than ideal. People reports via the Smartless podcast, that while making his first commercial the director called him a “dummy.”
“First professional experience I had was a commercial when I was 6,” said Kieran to Smartless hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett. Although Culkin doesn’t exactly remember what the commercial was for he said it was “something to do with learning disabilities.”
“The concept was I’m standing in front of a chalkboard with chalk in my hand, and I don’t know how to solve the easy thing in front of me,” recalled Culkin. “And the kids in the class are supposed to be calling me a dummy and stupid, all that,” he continued.

The latest in our series of writers revealing their favourite mood-lifting films is an ode to the 1991 comedy in which Steve Martin is a farcically over-protective father
I should hate this film. A possessive father loses the plot at the notion that his 22-year-old daughter – a sophisticated architecture student just back from a semester in Rome – is engaged to a man he hasn’t met. Ty Burrell has forever cemented his status as America's favorite dad. Through an iconic run as Phil Dunphy on Modern Family, Burrell's quirky humor, heartfelt moments, and perfect comedic timing have made him a household sitcom name. However, beyond television, Burrell has also built an impressive filmography. For instance, he's surprisingly a member of the iconic Black Hawk Down cast, in which he delivers an unsuspectedly grounded performance. Amid the film's gripping intensity, Burrell proved himself to be a true, versatile actor.
Burrell's performance in Modern Family remains by far his most iconic, with Mr. Dunphy's hilarious, signature sense of childlike wonder redefining the otherwise cheesy sitcom dad. Additionally, as a member of the Mr. Peabody & Sherman voice cast, Burrell's versatility extends beyond live-action media. What should a sequel do? It should build on what came before, expand and deepen its characters and themes, as well as bring new characters into the fold. If these are the measures, then The Godfather Part II does all of these, blowing The Godfather, one of the greatest films of all time, out of the water. From the improvement of both leading characters Kay (Diane Keaton) and Michael (Al Pacino), as well as the antagonists, The Godfather Part II is able to improve on nearly everything that came before it, and even some perceived weaknesses serve far greater purposes than one might expect at first glance.

John Travolta's career-saving comedy movie franchise, which made over $400 million at the box office combined, receives a sequel update from its creator decades later. After rising to fame for his role in the sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter, Travolta burst onto the scene during the 1970s with Saturday Night Fever and Grease, which were both big box office successes that capitulated him into superstardom, with the former also earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. However, the following decade wasn't as successful for Travolta.
During the 1980s, Travolta starred in a series of commercial and critical failures that temporarily tanked his career, such as Two of a Kind and Perfect, the former reuniting him with Grease star Olivia Newton-John. Even the Saturday Night Fever sequel Staying Alive, which was a financial success, was scorned by critics and failed to turn his career around. Travolta's career was eventually saved...

Although The First Wives Club is meant to serve as a celebration of female friendship, a cut love story was unfortunately detrimental to the movie's plot. In one of Diane Keaton's best roles, Annie MacDuggan, who has been a pushover throughout the movie, finds the strength to reject her ex-husband, while Bette Midler's character, the sardonic Brenda Morelli-Cushman, has the grace to forgive her ex in one of Midler's best movies. Goldie Hawn's character, the actress Elise Eliot, is focused on her career, until a new younger lover is mentioned in one line at the end.
The younger lover was supposed to be played by Jon Stewart, who actually filmed several scenes that had to be cut for time (via Vogue). The First Wives Club would have ended on a much stronger note if Elise's love interest had been kept in the movie. Elise, Brenda, and Annie...
