Jon Davison, the lead singer of the legendary progressive-rock band Yes since 2012, is firing back at a copyright-infringement lawsuit filed last week over the group’s 2021 single “Dare to Know.” In a lengthy statement posted on the band’s website today, Davison says the new legal claim from fellow prog-rock musician Riz Story — someone he says he previously considered a friend — is an “utterly fictitious” and “defamatory” attempt at a “shakedown.”

A new lawsuit alleges members of the legendary progressive rock band Yes used a composition stolen from fellow prog-rock musician Riz Story as the basis for “Dare to Know,” the second single off Yes’ 2021 album The Quest.
The copyright infringement complaint, filed Wednesday in Los Angeles and obtained by Rolling Stone, alleges Jon Davison, the lead singer of Yes since 2012, conspired with guitarist Steve Howe to pilfer protected portions from a song titled “Reunion.” While “Reunion” hasn’t been released as a standalone song, it was featured in A Winter Rose,...

If there was an award for outworking a Clydesdale, Taylor Sheridan would gallop to the finish line first, leaving all in his dust. Few in the TV industry wear as many hats or lassos as many fans as this Texas cowboy, who has single-handedly reignited the TV western—no small potatoes!
Taylor Sheridan in Yellowstone | Credit: Paramount
The past few years, he’s been busier, producing and writing a batch of shows like Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, and more, not to mention the Yellowstone spin-offs like 1883 and 1923. With film credits such as Sicario and Hell or High Water, which lassoed him into Hollywood’s spotlight, it’s no surprise the man heaps praise on Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas.

As it approaches its 10-year anniversary in September, The Green Room has added three new talent managers to its ranks — producer and manager Andrea Nittoli, former development executive and producer Janelle Polk and agent Ben Brucato.
Nittoli previously was a partner at The 5 Management company, owner of Unlimited Talent Management, and worked with Brave Artists Management. She also served as a producer for David Rodriguez’s film Once Upon a Time in Queens, starring Paul Sorvino and Chazz Palminteri.
Polk moves to The Green Room after nearly two decades in the entertainment industry, including a nearly decade-long stint at Warner Bros. An artist herself, The Green Room notes “Janelle has a keen eye for talent, and her extensive relationships across the industry and strategic insights will be invaluable as she transitions into talent management.”

Winning an Oscar by making us laugh. What a way to make a living!
What makes a performance “Oscar-worthy”? Many often leap to sustained emotional investment or comprehensively immersive transformations as the benchmark for success at the Academy Awards. But if the Oscars celebrate the performances that elicit the strongest emotional responses then why do show-stopping comedic performances so often receive the cold-shoulder? There is a relatively easy answer to this question found within the progression of American film across the past half-century. Cinema throughout the 1930s, 40s, and 50s saw the proliferation of genre filmmaking, with behemoths like the musical, western, epic, and comedy reigning supreme. During these decades, all of these styles saw success both popularly as cherished classics amongst the general public, and prestigiously as consistent award show champions.

As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a Funko Pop. Actually, that's entirely possible now, thanks to the Pop Yourself program available both in-store and online. But if you're not in the market to turn yourself into a vinyl collectible, maybe you'd like to collect the characters from one of Martin Scorsese's classic films, "GoodFellas."
Funko
Since "The Godfather" joined the roster of Funko POPs vinyl figures inspired by movies not too long ago, it only makes sense for another classic mob movie to get the same treatment. The "GoodFellas" Funko POPs give us pretty much every character that you'd want included. There's Ray Liotta as Henry Hill, before he got all coked out and paranoid, Robert De Niro as the enforcer Jimmy Conway, standing like a gentleman, and Joe Pesci as the mouthy and reckless Tommy De Vito,...

For us 90s kids, Dick Tracy was an interesting monster of a movie. It seemed to take a lot of cues from Tim Burton’s Batman, which was released the previous summer, but it definitely had a distinct voice of its own. Dick Tracy was another classic pulp adaptation of an urban enforcer that had very dynamic visuals and an over-the-top rogues gallery. It even sported a score by Danny Elfman, which would have his signature atmospheric sound. The movie would introduce a generation of young audiences to the 1930’s film noir/ detective movie genre. Additionally, the movie brought back Warren Beatty after a three-year absence when his last film, 1987’s Ishtar, was a big flop. Having a star like Beatty in a big-budget franchise like this was an enormous asset for the re-budding intellectual property. And the star power wouldn’t even stop there.

Tatum O’Neal, in a poignant message to well-wishers days after the death of her father, actor Ryan O’Neal, offers a simple but heartfelt, “Thank you everyone for all your love and support,” she says in the Instagram video. “He’s in heaven now.” After a slight pause, the somber-looking Tatum reassures, “Yeah.”
The video, set to Anten’s dreamy, ambient-style instrumental “Hope To See You Again,” is accompanied by a written message: “Me & my kids loved you so much, daddy. You’ll forever be in my heart. Keep each other close, everyone. Life is a journey.”

Henry Kissinger, who as national security advisor and secretary of state for Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford became one of the most influential, famous and controversial diplomats of the 20th century, died Wednesday in his home in Connecticut. He was 100.
A consultant to almost every President of the United States since leaving the State Department in 1977, Kissinger was instrumental in the historic opening to China in 1972. He was also a hawk during the Vietnam War, a master strategist in geopolitics and Beltway power, and an architect of Middle East shuttle diplomacy. With a realpolitik legacy that is as complicated as any American statesman, the pragmatic and cynical German-born Kissinger also was a much lauded and criticized recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973 for his role in ending the war in Southeast Asia.

While looking for a project to follow the success of his films The French Connection and The Exorcist, director William Friedkin came across a book he found to be fascinating: Cruising by Gerald Walker, about “a series of murders in the gay bars of New York, and a detective assigned to go undercover to find the killer”. But Friedkin had already made a movie that centered on gay characters, The Boys in the Band, so he let the Cruising adaptation go by. For a while, Steven Spielberg was attached to direct the film, but wasn’t able to get it into production. In his memoir The Friedkin Connection, Friedkin revealed that it wasn’t until someone he worked with on The Exorcist turned out to be a real-life serial killer that he thought of the way to approach Cruising.

“Dancing With the Stars” Season 32 kicked off right on schedule on Tuesday night, with all 15 couples, even temporary holdout actor Matt Walsh, hitting the dance floor for the first time.
“Bachelorette” star Charity Lawson and partner Artem Chigvintsev earned the highest score of the evening for their Tango, which judge Bruno Tonioli proclaimed to be “exquisite,” while Carrie Ann Inaba said it was “stunning,” especially for Week 1.
Charity took the lead from singer Jason Mraz, whose Cha-Cha-Cha with Daniella Karagacha to his own song, “I Feel Like Dancing,” prompted Bruno to dub him “the one to watch.” Jason, who claimed his higher-than-average dancing skills were due to an “extra vertebra,” earned a “7” from each judge.
After the audience votes were added, “Rhobh” star Mauricio Umansky and “Veep” star Matt Walsh were in the bottom two. Matt’s “non-traditional” Cha-Cha-Cha with partner Koko Iwasaki received a “4,” from each judge, a decision the audience booed.

Though strike guidelines prevent actors who participate in conventions this summer from promoting most of their work, it turns out that hasn’t lessened the experience. In fact, several actors told us at FanExpo Chicago over the weekend, their interactions with fans at cons have become more “meaningful.”
“One of the biggest things that we wanted to make sure [of] in our negotiating committee, when we were talking about the cons, is we wanted to make sure that we didn’t chastise the actors, or chastise the fans, because of what the big business is doing,” Michelle Hurd, “Star Trek: Picard” actress and SAG’s Los Angeles VP explained to TheWrap. “So we wanted to maintain this relationship.”
But that relationship hasn’t just been maintained, Hurd said, it’s arguably improved — and she hasn’t been the only one who’s noticed.

William Friedkin, the Oscar-winning director behind The Exorcist, The French Connection, To Live and Die in L.A., The Boys in the Band, and more, is dead at 87. Friedkin died in Los Angeles, said his wife, former producer and studio head Sherry Lansing.
Born on August 29, 1935, in Chicago, Friedkin started directing television before disgusting audiences with projectile pea soup and dealings with demons. In the mid-’60s, Friedkin shot an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Hour and helmed various telefilms. Before the era was over, he got behind the camera for features like Good Times (1967), The Birthday Party (1968), and The Night They Raided Minsky’s (1968).
He started the ’70s off with a band by directing The Boys in the Band. With his name already on the lips of executives everywhere, he moved on to The French Connection, a show-stopping thriller starring Gene Hackman as Detective Popeye Doyle. The French Connection won multiple Oscars,...

Marc Gilpin, who played the younger son of Roy Scheider’s Police Chief Martin Brody in Jaws 2, has died. He was 56.
Gilpin died Saturday in Dallas after a long battle with glioblastoma, his older sister, Frasier actress Peri Gilpin, announced.
After answering a casting call, Gilpin beat out hundreds of other boys to get hired as Sean Brody in the 1978 sequel to the blockbuster Jaws (1975), directed by Steven Spielberg. He was 11 when the movie reached theaters.
Jaws 2 was directed by Jeannot Szwarc. Lorraine Gary returned as Chief Brody’s wife, but their sons, Michael and Sean, portrayed by Chris Rebello and Jay Mello in the original, were replaced by Mark Gruner and Gilpin in the second film.
A year later, Gilpin guest-starred on NBC’s CHiPs and appeared with his younger sister, April, on ABC’s Fantasy Island. In 1981, he was in the films The Legend of the Long Ranger and Earthbound.

Ray Stevenson died on location in Italy this week while working on the film Cassino in Ischi. In it, he plays Nic Cassino, who appears to be the title character. But throughout his career the actor was renowned for strong supporting roles. Stevenson exemplified this “one for all” spirit as Porthos in The Three Musketeers (2011) and honed it through The Book of Eli (2010), King Arthur (2004), the Thor movies, and the upcoming Star Wars Disney+ series, Ashoka. He was at his most supportive, even as a lead character, when he played legionnaire Titus Pullo in HBO’s Rome. Pullo was a warrior with a heart of gold, but at one point he could also be the second-hand-man to an early version of a mob kingpin.
But Stevenson was second to no one in the role of Danny Greene, the titular character of writer-director Jonathan Hensleigh’s 2011 gangster-genre love letter, Kill the Irishman.

Exclusive: In 2016, the hottest book in Hollywood hadn’t even been published yet. Circulating in galley proofs, it was the latest non-fiction work from author David Grann, whose 2009 book The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon had recently been filmed by James Gray and produced by Plan B. His new book was another mouthful — Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI — and it proved just as tasty.

Beloved by moviegoers for decades, the mafia film genre typically centers around key players that make up the world of organized crime in various contexts, locations, and cultures, with a sprinkle of family life and a generous serving of violence included in the storylines. The genre traces back to the early beginnings of film, but was popularized by directors like Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese in the 1970s and beyond.
Over the years, the mafia genre has continued to defy stereotypes and include elements from different film genres, like suspense or comedy. The latest mafia-related film, "Mafia Mamma," which hit theaters on April 14, presents a traditional look at the Italian mafia, with a refreshing, comedic tone delivered by Toni Collette and Monica Bellucci. In the film, Colette's character, Kristin, unexpectedly inherits her estranged grandfather's mafia empire in Calabria, Italy, and has to assume the role of mob boss...

William Hopper, the actor who played the stalwart private detective Paul Drake on the hit 1957 legal drama "Perry Mason," was a notoriously prolific smoker, often seen with a cigarette hanging from his lips on camera. In 1970, Hopper suffered a stroke and succumbed to smoking-related health issues a month later. He was 55 years old.
As Paul Drake, Hopper was a cynic, a more grizzled presence built to balance Perry Mason's serious intellect. He was the Dr. McCoy to Perry Mason's Spock. For those unfamiliar with the series, "Perry Mason" was about a Los Angeles defense lawyer, played brilliantly by Raymond Burr, who was always careful to investigate the clients he was hired to defend. Typically, innocent people came to Mason, and he was always curious about the details of their case. Mason would always face off against the L.A. District Attorney Hamilton Burger (William Talman), who never won a case against him.

Erle Stanley Gardner’s brilliant and savvy criminal defense attorney Perry Mason has been on the case since 1933’s “The Case of the Velvet Claws.” The attorney describes himself in that first novel as a “lawyer who has specialized in trial work, and in a lot of criminal work…I’m a specialist on getting people out of trouble.”
Inspired by the famed Los Angeles criminal defense attorney Earl Rogers who only lost three of his 77 murder trials, Mason was featured in 82 novels and four short stories, six Warner Bros. murder mystery movies, a long-running radio series, the beloved 1957-66 CBS series starring Raymond Burr and Barbara Hale as his true-blue assistant Della Street, movies and a 1973-74 series with Monte Markham. Matthew Rhys (“The Americans” ) plays the latest incarnation in HBO’s stylish “Perry Mason” series, currently in its second season.

Plot: A teenage boy runs away to follow his father’s footsteps, legendary storm chaser Bill Brody.
Review: It’s been quite a long time since we’ve gotten a fun film about inclement weather. Having grown up on films like Twister and Deep Impact, natural disasters always make for a thrilling story. Whether the other pieces come together is often up to the individual, but I feel most people going into a “weather” movie, have those expectations properly adjusted. But Supercell has a surprising amount of heart and some interesting performances that put this above some other low-budget types.
Supercell starts in fairly stereotypical fashion, with our lead’s father dying in a giant supercell. Years later, his mother is a complete mess and has left weather researching behind. Yet the son, William, wants to walk in his dad’s footsteps. That’s to say he wants to research Supercells…...

As is tradition, this year’s Academy Awards ceremony took a pause to remember those the movie industry lost over the past year. Also evidently tradition is snubbing major names. This year, notable omissions were Anne Heche, Tom Sizemore and Paul Sorvino. Now, the widow of Paul Sorvino is calling out the Oscars directly, demanding an apology and urging them to fix their mistake.
The omission of Paul Sorvino from the Oscars’ In Memoriam segment has irked fans all over, serving as yet another reminder that the Academy never gives a thorough enough presentation to some. But his widow, Dee Dee, is one of the rare family members who is actually speaking out, issuing a statement blasting the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. “Paul Sorvino was one of the greatest actors in cinematic history in Hollywood. Every year the Oscar’s hold an in memoriam segment honoring stars and Hollywood professionals who lost their lives over the past year, and every time, there’s controversy after the segment seems to leave notable faces out. “White Lotus” star Michael Imperioli is adding to the criticism that this year’s in memoriam received, by blasting the omission of his prior co-stars Tony Sirico, Paul Sorvino, and Tom Sizemore.

After a surprisingly eventful ceremony last year, the 2023 Oscars went on without a hitch Sunday. Everything Everywhere All at Once completed its awards-season sweep with a whopping seven trophies, including Best Picture, as well as three of the four acting categories. It was the Oscars’ most-awarded film in a decade.
And audiences seemed to respond, if only slightly. The 95th annual ceremony brought in 18.7 million viewers, a 12% increase from last year when the telecast captured 16.6M viewers. The telecast also was up to a 4.0 demo rating, compared with last year’s 3.8.

Other stars to be featured in the segment were Burt Bacharach, Nichelle Nichols, Kirstie Alley and Racquel Welch.

The end of the video prompted viewers to visit the Acaemy’s website to see additional names that never made it onto the main video, which has led to criticism.
Among those left out were Charlbi Dean, the rising star who was the female lead in Best Picture-nominated film Triangle of Sadness.

Mira Sorvino is calling out the Academy Awards for not including her father Paul Sorvino during the In Memoriam tribute.
Sorvino took to social media to share her “hurt” over Paul being “overlooked” at the 2023 ceremony. Sorvino tweeted, “It is baffling beyond belief that my beloved father and many other amazing brilliant departed actors were left out. The Oscars forgot about Paul Sorvino, but the rest of us never will!!”
The Oscar winner also shared on Instagram, writing, “I love you Dad. I miss you so much. Ps, when I posted this I had not learned of my Dad’s omission and that of several other incredible artists from the in Memoriam section. Incredibly hurt and shocked that my father’s lifelong, irreplaceable, enormous contribution to the world of cinema was overlooked by whomever made that list. We, his adoring family, and you, his adoring public, know just how unique and incredible he was.
