Joseph Wambaugh, the writer who mined his years as a Los Angeles Police Department patrolman for a series of bestselling crime books including The Onion Field, The New Centurions, The Blue Knight and The Glitter Dome, and whose literary works were adapted for feature films and television series, died today of esophageal cancer at his home in Rancho Mirage, California. He was 88.
His death was reported to The New York Times by a Wambaugh family friend.
In 1971, eleven years after joining the LAPD, Wambaugh saw his first novel, The New Centurions, published by Little, Brown and Co. The story of rookie LAPD cops in the early 1960s became his first bestseller and, the following year, the first movie based on his work. The film adaptation starred George C. Scott and Stacy Keach.

Joseph Wambaugh, who turned his experiences from 14 years with the Los Angeles Police Department into such gritty books as The Onion Field, The New Centurions, The Blue Knight and The Glitter Dome — all adapted for the screen — died Friday. He was 88.
Wambaugh, who also co-created the acclaimed 1970s anthology series Police Story for NBC, died at his home in Rancho Mirage of esophageal cancer, longtime family friend Janene Gant told The New York Times.
Wambaugh, who joined the LAPD as a patrolman in 1960, made a splash with his debut novel, The New Centurions, a sweeping tale that followed three young LAPD officers during a five-year period that led to the 1965 Watts riots. Published by Little, Brown and Co. in 1971, it was a hit, remaining on The New York Times Best Seller List for 32 weeks.
In his review for the Times, Thomas Fleming wrote: “Do you like cops? Read The New Centurions.

January 16th is the birthday of legendary filmmaker John Carpenter, who turns 77 this year – and to mark the occasion, Shout Factory / Scream Factory is having a sale of John Carpenter Blu-rays! While the company has to apologize to later-era Carpenter fans because their 4K releases of his films Ghosts of Mars and Vampires are not included in this sale, the Blu-rays of Assault on Precinct 13, Someone’s Watching Me, Elvis, Starman, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, and Body Bags are.
The Assault on Precinct 13 Blu-ray usually sells for $15.99. For this sale, the price has been dropped to $9.99. Written and directed by Carpenter, this film was originally released in 1976 and has the following synopsis: Isolated and cut off from the city inside a soon-to-be-closed L.A. police station, a group of police officers and convicts must join forces to defend themselves against the gang called Street Thunder, who have taken a...

Ridley Scott claims that his debut 1977 movie would have won one of the biggest film prizes had it not been for $50K bribery. The English director is perhaps best known for his iconic sci-fi films, Alien and Blade Runner, which were only the second and third films of his career. A few years earlier, he made his feature directorial debut in 1977 with a lesser-known historical drama, his first in the genre before directing many more in Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, The Last Duel, and Napoleon.
Scott's later historical epic Gladiator did win arguably the biggest prize in film, the Academy Award for Best Picture, in 2001, while his 2016 sci-fi film The Martian was also nominated for the honor. Additionally, Scott has received an Oscar nomination for Best Director three times for Thelma & Louise, Gladiator, and Black Hawk Down. In “Lost & Found in Cleveland,” the backdrop of an antique show serves as both a catalyst for personal revelations and a reflection of a city struggling with its identity. A wide range of characters, each with hopes and fears, are introduced to us in the film. Dennis Haysbert’s mailman wants to open a restaurant to honor his late mother, and Stacy Keach and June Squibb play an older couple stuck in the twilight of their lives, tied together by memories and the fragility of time.
The characters are propelled toward a shared moment of reckoning as the narrative progresses by the impending arrival of the fictional appraisal show, which builds a palpable tension. The bringing together of these storylines is marked by several heartfelt interactions, like the touching scene where Keach’s character, stuck between the glories of the past and the realities of the present, faces his deteriorating memory.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is remembered for its funny dialogue and over-the-top gags, but as with all Michael Schur shows, there was a lot of heart as well. Over Brooklyn Nine-Nine's eight seasons, the squad became a found family, so it was deeply emotional when members of the team faced heightened or dangerous situations. As the show gained popularity by the middle of its run, the sitcom took time to address real-world issues like racial profiling and workplace sexual harassment.
Weaving in heavy topics while remaining true to its comedic core is a testament to the writers and cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) led the cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and his arc mimics the maturity of the show, especially in the later seasons when the show explored the detectives' personal lives. Later seasons also reflected a shift in cultural perspectives toward police work, leaning more into longer arcs about systematic corruption.

Blue Bloods is officially done. The beloved procedural drama wrapped up after 14 seasons on CBS, and unlike so many shows, it went out on top. The general consensus among fans is that the finale, "End of Tour," was a satisfying and emotionally rich conclusion. And the ratings proved it.
Blue Bloods has always been a steady ratings draw for CBS, but the finale went above and beyond in terms of connecting with viewers. Variety reported that "End of Tour" drew an impressive 6.68 million viewers, according to VideoAmp data. This is a 15% increase from season to season.
The show drew 5.86 viewers during its initial Friday time slot, which managed to surpass the already highly viewed season 14 finale. Blue Bloods also wiped the floor with other scripted dramas airing on the same night. Fire Country, one of the most promising new CBS dramas, only managed to bring in 4.54 viewers, by comparison.

Donnie Wahlberg loves him some Blue Bloods. He's never been shy about his fandom for the show, nor the impact that it's had on his life. Danny Reagan will go down as Wahlberg's defining role, and he is understandably sad to see the show come to an end.
Blue Bloods is perhaps best known for its family dinner scenes, so emotions were always going to be high during the filming of the final dinner. Wahlberg recounted the experience during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He claimed that he was able to keep it together for the bulk of filming, but it was a gesture by co-star Tom Selleck that led to the emotions spilling out.

Though it’s something of a backhanded paean to its eponymous city in question, the most enjoyable element to “Lost & Found in Cleveland” is its locations, locations, locations — cinematographer Davon Slininger’s widescreen images provide an appealing selective tour of a burg the film presents as quaintly lagging well behind the times. Otherwise, this slick if uninspired first feature for actors turned writer-directors Marisa Guterman and Keith Gerchak offers a pleasant-enough ensemble seriocomedy that straddles the terrains of Richard Curtis and Christopher Guest, without approaching either’s high points. The Newport Beach Fest world premiere’s familiar faces and story beats seem best suited to home viewing.
An opening montage to the retro pop of Bobby Darin singing “Artificial Flowers” — an incongruously brassy, “Mack the Knife”-like arrangement of a depressing slum-tragedy lyric from 1960 Broadway musical “Tenderloin” — introduces the characters, as well as a sense that this midwestern metropolis’ growth stalled some decades ago.

Tom Selleck thanked CBS for the last eight episodes of popular family cop drama Blue Bloods that begin airing tonight and, when concluded, will mark the end of the show’s impressive 14-season run.
“These eight shows that we can look forward to are because CBS agreed and wanted to do that and celebrate – not only celebrate Blue Bloods but commemorate its legacy. And I just wanted to thank them,” the actor said Thursday night during the show’s panel at PaleyFest in NYC.
The series will have aired nearly 300 episodes when Season 14, Part 2 wraps. Part 1 aired from February to May.
Deadline first reported CBS’ plans to end Blue Bloods’ run almost a year ago. Network executives said later that, “All shows have to come to an end. It’s important to us to refresh the schedule,” acknowledging that the series by EP and showrunner Kevin Wade had been a staple of the lineup.

As Blue Bloods heads into its final episodes, fans wonder if we’ll see some old faces and at least one original cast member is coming back for the last run!
As Blue Bloods prepares for the last half of Season 14, fans are getting ready to say goodbye. As much as they may want to see the show continue, CBS appears prepared to end it. At least fans can expect to see some old and familiar faces returning.
It’s confirmed that Stacy Keach will return as Archbishop Kearns and Dylan Walsh once more as Mayor Chase. We’ll have Will Hochman back as Joe Hill and, even better, an on-screen meeting of him and the long-absent Nikki (Sami Gayle) and Jack (Tony Terraciano). However, there’s a question of another long-time face coming back in Jennifer Esposito as Jackie Curatola.

When you look at the true legacy of a scream queen there are a lot of options out there to choose from. When looking at the top of the heap though? I’d argue that there really is only one option. Jamie Lee Curtis has been making horror movies in 6 different decades now and while a lot of them are directly tied to her most famous franchise with 7 of her horror films being in the Halloween series, there’s so much more. In fact, her run from 1978 to 1981 includes the likes of Halloween 1 and 2, The Fog, Terror Train, and Prom Night. All of those movies have now been remade and are considered classics but there is one in there that doesn’t get talked about enough, was a bomb when it came out, but keeps getting better with age. While Halloween II came out and stole the spotlight in 1981, Road Games...

Jeff Bridges made his unofficial screen debut in John Cromwell's 1951 drama "The Company She Keeps" just over a year after he was born. The son of actors Dorothy and Lloyd Bridges, he steadily proved himself a nepo baby of the finest order upon reaching young adulthood. In the 50 years and change since then, he's done it all, be it squaring off with King Kong, riding a light cycle on The Grid, or seeking compensation for the damage to his prized rug. (It really tied his living room together.) He even snagged a long-expected Oscar for playing an alcoholic country singer in Scott Cooper's "Crazy Heart," a film that arrived on the heels of Bridges portraying the first-ever Marvel Cinematic Universe villain in "Iron Man."
Trying to decide which of Bridges' movies stands out above the rest is a formidable challenge. It's also one that we, thankfully, need not...

Intro: What is the first movie that comes to mind when you hear the name Elisabeth Shue? Do you think of her as the Karate Kid’s love interest? Fred Roos, the casting director turned producer who jump-started the career of Jack Nicholson and collaborated often with Francis Ford Coppola, sharing a best picture Oscar with the filmmaker for The Godfather Part II, has died. He was 89.
Roos died Saturday at his home in Beverly Hills, a publicist announced.
It’s part of Hollywood lore that before Harrison Ford became a famous actor, he was laboring as a carpenter to make ends meet. What some might not know is that it was at Roos’ house where Ford was woodworking when the casting director befriended him, eventually pushing him for roles in George Lucas’ American Graffiti (1973) and Star Wars (1977) and Coppola’s The Conversation (1974).
And it was Roos who convinced Lucas — who had been leaning toward Amy Irving — that Carrie Fisher should portray Princess Leia in Star Wars. (Roos did not have an official role on that film.)

"Duet" in DS9 season 1 tackles complex themes, introducing Cardassian war criminal Marritza to challenge Major Kira's prejudices. Actor Harris Yulin faced memory troubles due to lengthy Cardassian makeup process, needing lines fed by director Jim Conway. Nana Visitor also struggled with Cardassian makeup in DS9 season 3, but delivered a fantastic performance in "Second Skin".
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine guest star Harris Yulin had one problem with playing Cardassian war criminal Aamin Marritza in DS9 season 1, episode 19, "Duet". Widely regarded as a highlight of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, "Duet" is DS9 season 1's best episode, acting as an early indicator of the complex political themes that Star Trek: DS9 would come to be known for. Yulin's Marritza is a Cardassian war criminal who forces Major Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor) to reckon with her own prejudices against Cardassians by seeking punishment for his complicity in the atrocities committed at a...

If you want to see a wild midnight movie, there’s a little-known Australian movie called Stunt Rock, which might blow your mind. In it, an Australian stuntman named Grant Page (playing himself) visits Los Angeles to do stunts for a TV show and hooks up with a heavy metal band named Sorcery (the band is like Kiss if they also did magic). It has many fans, including Eli Roth, who used one of Sorcery’s songs in his Death Wish remake and is prominently featured in an incredible documentary about Australian exploitation films (Ozploitation) called Not Quite Hollywood.
More than anything, this documentary was a loving tribute to Page, who did incredible stunts for almost every cool action film shot in Australia over the last fifty years, including Mad Max, and Road Games (in which he played the mostly unseen villain). Sadly, Mark Hartley, the director of Not Quite Hollywood,...

The comedy world—heck, the whole world—mourns the passing of Richard Lewis, whose death was announced yesterday. The 76-year-old comic was a mainstay on the circuit since the mid-1970s. Though he has several comedy specials and movie appearances under his belt (plus the early 1990s sitcom “Anything But Love” opposite Jamie Lee Curtis) his most widely-seen work was surely as Larry David’s bickering foil on “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
Lewis’s amplified version of himself appeared in the first regular series episode in 2000 (recall that “Curb” began as a one-off special in 1999), and can be currently seen in the 12th season, which is now airing.
Lewis was nominated for a SAG Award in 2006, for Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series. His special “The I’m Exhausted Concert” was nominated for a Cable Ace Award in 1989.

Nonagenarian actress June Squibb is making her first ever in-person appearance at the Sundance Film Festival this year as the star of Josh Margolin’s comedy-action-drama Thelma about a grandmother who goes after an internet scammer.
“I’ve had films show there before but either I was working or wasn’t that interested in the film,” says 94-year-old Squibb, who was Oscar nominated for Best Supporting Actress in Alexander Payne’s Nebraska in 2013.
In Thelma, she plays a 93-year-old L.A. grandmother, living happily alone and unassisted in her beloved condo in the Valley, whose independence is threatened when she is scammed out of $10,000 by a caller impersonating her grandson.
Initially ashamed and flummoxed by her gullibility, Thelma is inspired to embark on a mission to track down the thief after seeing a newspaper headline celebrating Tom Cruise’s age-defying Mission Impossible career.
