Mubi has acquired “Pavements,” Alex Ross Perry’s unconventional documentary-musical-biopic about cult ’90s slacker band Pavement, for multiple territories following its recent world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
The arthouse distributor, streamer and production company has picked up all rights to the film — soon to bow in both the New York Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival — for the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Austria, France and Canada. Meanwhile, Mubi also acquired exclusive SVOD rights for the U.S.
The deal was signed with Utopia, which is handling world sales and, the day after the film’s Venice launch, announced it would also distribute theatrically in the U.S. Mubi says it will announce its release plans in the coming months.
Directed and written by Perry (“Her Smell”), “Pavements” stars Joe Keery, Jason Schwartzman, Nat Wolff, Fred Hechinger, Logan Miller, Griffin Newman, Tim Heidecker, Michael Esper, Zoe Lister-Jones and...

Utopia has picked up the U.S. rights to Pavements, director Alex Ross Perry’s musical portrait of the 1990s al-rock band a day after a world premiere in Venice earlier this week.
“One of our favorite filmmakers, one of our favorite bands, Pavements joining Utopia is simply a dream come true. The band’s iconic status has only continued to blossom out of the ’90s and Alex has crafted a film that transcends documentary and questions what the format can be in a surprising and novel way,” Utopia head of marketing and distribution Kyle Greenberg said in a statement on Friday.
Pavements will also have a North American premiere at the New York Film Festival. The musical biopic tracks the influential rock band as they prepare for a 2022 reunion tour in the prism of their earlier accomplishments.
“This multifaceted meta-movie is at once documentary, musical comedy, faux biopic and real museum exhibition.

Utopia has acquired U.S. rights to acclaimed director Alex Ross Perry’s “Pavements,” the day after its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
The film debuted to strong reviews, with Variety saying “’Pavements’ dazzles as a spinning plates act,” and Screen describing it as “a joyous, slyly subversive celebration.”
A boundary-breaking look at the seminal band Pavement, the film is edited and produced by filmmaker Robert Greene and will have its North American premiere at the New York Film Festival later this fall.
An examination of the iconic 90s indie band, “Pavements” appears to be just another music documentary, until it doesn’t. A “prismatic, narrative, scripted, documentary, musical, metatextual hybrid,” the film intimately shows the band preparing for their sold-out 2022 reunion tour while simultaneously tracking the preparations for a musical based on their songs, a museum devoted to their history and a big-budget Hollywood biopic inspired by...

“Next time you see some haters in my comments saying, ‘All he does is crowd work, it’s so easy’ — is it?!” the comedian Matt Rife asks his audience. The 28-year-old social media star has clearly retained the defensiveness that marked so much of “Natural Selection,” his debut Netflix hour from last fall best remembered for an effectively rage-baiting, if groanworthy, bit about domestic violence. But in “Lucid,” his latest hours, Rife’s typical hobbyhorses — dick jokes, mostly, plus the aforementioned chip on his shoulder — are refracted through his audience, a few hundred fans gathered at the Comedy Zone in Charlotte, North Carolina for what Rife proudly and repeatedly stresses is Netflix’s first all-crowd work special.
Rife is not the first stand-up to source an entire act from spontaneous reactions to his own paying audience. It’s likely the phantom haters Rife is so irked by are responding less...

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired North American distribution rights to music-themed documentary The Elephant 6 Recording Co., setting an August 25 theatrical release date for the directorial debut of C.B. Stockfleth.
The film, an inside look at the influential underground music movement, premiered at Doc NYC last November and held its international premiere at Cph:dox in Copenhagen in March.
“In 1985, a group of Louisiana high schoolers began experimenting with whatever random instruments and gear they could find,” a description of the documentary notes. “This core group became the basis for a loose music collective that became known as the Elephant 6 Recording Co. and comprised bands Neutral Milk Hotel, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Apples in Stereo, Elf Power and many others. Influenced by psychedelic pop of the Beatles and the Beach Boys and a lo-fi DIY approach, the bands that coalesced around the Elephant 6 banner epitomized for many alternative and indie rock of the ‘90’s.

“History of the World, Part II” has become Hulu’s most-watched scripted original of 2023 in its first week of launch, TheWrap can exclusively report.
The eight-episode comedy received the most hours watched when compared to any other Hulu scripted original series within the first week of its launch. Premiering March 6 with the first two episodes, and subsequently dropping two episodes nightly through Thursday, March 9, the week-long viewership tally includes the entirety of the show’s release.
The series also made a splash on social media as the show’s accounts earned the most video views and engagements of any Hulu Original released in 2023 on premiere day.

Spoofs are all about volume. Deliver enough punchlines and there are almost guaranteed to be duds — but if you get enough big laughs, viewers will be too busy wheezing and wiping away tears to notice.
With the possible exception of the Airplane! guys, nobody knows this better than Mel Brooks. There are jokes in Blazing Saddles that fall flat. You mostly don’t remember them, because so much of it is still a riot. And because so much of Dracula: Dead and Loving It is stagnant, the few punchlines that land are rarely mentioned.
As Mel Brooks spoofs go, 1981’s History of the World, Part I is right in the middle. It has great bits — I quote “It is said that the people are revolting.” “You said it. They stink on ice!” in my head at least once a week — and flailing duds and stretches I think were memorable that...

Plot: After waiting over 40 years there is finally a sequel to the seminal Mel Brooks film, “History of the World, Part I,” with each episode featuring a variety of sketches that take us through different periods of human history.
Review: I was beyond excited when it was first announced that Hulu was bringing the long awaited sequel to Mel Brooks’ comedy History of the World Part I. I was less enthusiastic when I learned that the ninety-six year old would only be involved in a limited capacity. Spread over eight half-hour episodes, History of the World Part II has all of the hallmarks and style of classic Mel Brooks but without the spark that made Spaceballs, Blazing Saddles, and Young Frankenstein into masterpieces. With a reliance on quantity versus quality, History of the World Part II throws everything at the screen to see what sticks, resulting in a very uneven...

“History of The World: Part II” star Nick Kroll says the new Hulu series continues Mel Brooks’ legacy of “poking fun at those in power.”
“Mel’s ultimate goal was always to poke fun at those in power and how greedy and stupid they were,” Kroll said during the 2023 Television Critics Association’s Winter Press Tour on Saturday. “And so doing a show about history now at a time when we are reexamining the past, how things went down, it became a very easy through-line to just continue Mel’s legacy of poking fun at those in power.”
While the landscape of comedy has shifted in the 40 years since Brooks’ film “History of The World: Part I” was released, Kroll argues that comedians can “still say and do insane things.”
“They just have to be a little more thoughtful about how and why you’re saying them,” he added.

Back in 1981, between “High Anxiety” and “Spaceballs,” Mel Brooks released “History of the World Part I,” a parody of epic films where at least part of the joke was that there was never going to be a Part II. But after 40 years, that’s no longer the case, as “History of the World Part II,” a limited series follow-up to the film is set to premiere on Hulu March 6. The streamer announced the news January 13, in addition to releasing a teaser for the sketch series.
Similar to the film, which consisted of five segments spanning the Stone Age to the French Revolution, each episode of “History of the World Part II” will consist of several sketches taking place at different periods throughout human history. Brooks stars in each episode alongside Wanda Sykes, Nick Kroll, and Ike Barinholtz, but each episode will also feature special guest stars from a stacked lineup...

After 40 years, the hopes and dreams of a generation have finally come true: “History of the World Pt. 2” is almost here. Hulu announced on Thursday that TV series — the long-awaited sequel to the classic 1982 Mel Brooks movie — will premiere March 6. And along with that announcement comes the official trailer. Watch that above now.
The 8-episode series launches with the first two episodes on March 6, with two episodes released nightly through March 9.
Like “History of the World Part 1,” the show features a series of irreverent sketches inspired by different historical eras and, if it’s anything like the original film, also parodying the historical epics of Hollywood’s golden age.
And like its predecessor, “History of the World Part 2” takes aims at numerous literal and figurative sacred cows.

A new video for Joe Strummer’s recently released “Fantasy” draws from the former Clash frontman’s vaults to create a revealing, personal portrait of the late artist.
The clip opens with Strummer speaking posthumously from a boombox around New York City: “People are out there doing bad things together; it’s because they’re being dehumanized,” he says. “It’s time to take the humanity back to the center of the ring.” The clip shows snippets of Strummer’s lyrics along with footage of him walking around, tipping saxophonists on beach boardwalks,...

Death Cab for Cutie traverse new sonic territory with the quasi-experimental new single “Foxglove Through the Clearcut,” which comes off the band’s upcoming studio album Asphalt Meadows, out September 16.
Combining spoken word elements with the band’s signature observational lyricism and introspective instrumentation, the song examines the thoughts brought about by aimless wanderings, random encounters and solitude. Initially morose and defeatist in its opening stanzas — frontman Ben Gibbard pleadingly repeats the phrase “nowhere left to go” during an early refrain — the song builds to a swirling crescendo of dreamy...

Death Cab For Cutie stopped by The Late Show to perform their recent single, “Here to Forever.” The indie rock band offered a straight-forward, high-energy performance of the track, which arrived earlier this month alongside a music video written and directed by filmmaker Lance Bangs.
“It’s a song both about our impermanence and the anxiety of these times,” Gibbard recently explained of the track. “It’s also about wanting to believe in something bigger even when it feels like nothing is out there.”

Death Cab for Cutie has released a new single, “Here to Forever,” along with a music video written and directed by filmmaker Lance Bangs.
The clip depicts frontman Ben Gibbard being forced to deal with packaging the band’s vinyl himself after having a conversation with two inept pressing plant employees, played by comedians Natalie Palamides and Courtney Pauroso. The scenes are cut between clips of the band performing the track and Gibbard’s interactions with the pair.

Exclusive: This Joka, a stand-up comedy series exec produced by Will Smith, will not be returning for a second season on Roku.
The streaming service launched the series, which came via its acquisition of short-form service Quibi, in March.
The series features a raft of stand ups including Punkie Johnson and Chris Estrada.
Deadline understands that the decision had nothing to do with the Oscars incident, where Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage, but a somewhat unusual issue with timing.
Roku is believed to never really have had the option to renew the series, which is produced by Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook Studios and Topgolf Entertainment Group. The option to renew lapsed before Roku launched the show, and certainly before the streamer had the chance to analyse its viewing data, meaning that it was unlikely to return for a second season on the platform.

The tagline for Jackass Forever reads, “Some people never learn.” Thank goodness for that, because if they did, we wouldn’t have had this fourth instalment in the series, twelve years after Jackass 3D. You might have thought that Johnny Knoxville and the rest of the Jackass crew were getting a bit too old to be performing painful, stupid and life-endangering stunts of this magnitude, but oh no – they’re back and they’re as willing to seriously injure themselves for our entertainment as they ever were.

George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord” was released on Nov. 23, 1970, as the first single to his groundbreaking and historic solo album. The Beatles were the first band to play stadium concerts, put backwards instrumentation into songs, and the first rock band to put sitar and tamboura drones in pop rock. But Harrison’s first solo release after the band’s break up, All Things Must Pass, was the first triple album coming from a single act in rock. “My Sweet Lord,” was the first number one hit by a solo Beatle and the biggest selling single of 1971. It is most renowned because of the trendsetting plagiarism suit around it, but the song transcends easy labels.

In the star-packed effort directed by Lance Bangs and exec produced by Harrison’s son Dhani Harrison with David Zonshine, the new “My Sweet Lord” video stars Fred Armisen and Vanessa Bayer as “metaphysical special agents” searching for something that can’t be seen. Sleater-Kinney have released a new song, “Method,” from their upcoming album, Path of Wellness, out this Friday, June 11th via Mom + Pop.
The track has a kind of mellow feel as the guitars and bass twist around each other under a steady drum shuffle, but the song occasionally swells to something a bit more ragged. “I know, I’m singing about love,” Carrie Brownstein pleads on the chorus, “I’m sorry, I’m singing about love/And it sounds like hate/It’s too late to sing about love.”

In the fall of 1990, the Louisville band Slint found itself at a crossroads.
They’d just finished recording their second album over the course of a rushed weekend in Chicago. They knew that one of their favorite labels, the esteemed indie Touch and Go, would be putting it out, but otherwise, the future seemed uncertain. Though the band wasn’t paying their bills, the members, all in their early twenties, had taken time off from college to facilitate the intensive rehearsals that birthed five of the album’s six tracks.

When Jack White first met Brendan Benson the late 1990s, White shocked his future Raconteurs bandmate by ashing his cigarette all over the table.
