Mubi has acquired “Pavements,” Alex Ross Perry’s unconventional documentary-musical-biopic about cult ’90s slacker band Pavement, for multiple territories following its recent world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.

The arthouse distributor, streamer and production company has picked up all rights to the film — soon to bow in both the New York Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival — for the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Austria, France and Canada. Meanwhile, Mubi also acquired exclusive SVOD rights for the U.S.

The deal was signed with Utopia, which is handling world sales and, the day after the film’s Venice launch, announced it would also distribute theatrically in the U.S. Mubi says it will announce its release plans in the coming months.

Utopia has picked up the U.S. rights to Pavements, director Alex Ross Perry’s musical portrait of the 1990s al-rock band a day after a world premiere in Venice earlier this week.

“One of our favorite filmmakers, one of our favorite bands, Pavements joining Utopia is simply a dream come true. The band’s iconic status has only continued to blossom out of the ’90s and Alex has crafted a film that transcends documentary and questions what the format can be in a surprising and novel way,” Utopia head of marketing and distribution Kyle Greenberg said in a statement on Friday.

Pavements will also have a North American premiere at the New York Film Festival. The musical biopic tracks the influential rock band as they prepare for a 2022 reunion tour in the prism of their earlier accomplishments.

The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie are in the midst of their co-headlining tour (get tickets here) honoring the bands’ respective 2003 albums, Give Up and Transatlanticism, and tonight (October 3rd), they’re set to play a sold-out show in Phoenix, Arizona. But for fans who aren’t able to catch the performance in-person, the bands have announced a livestream of the concert.

Directed by Lance Bangs, the livestream will capture the performances by both of the Ben Gibbard-fronted bands, as they dive into the albums that defined their respective sounds 20 years ago. With The Postal Service, Gibbard will be joined by bandmates Jimmy Tamborello and Jenny Lewis. Death Cab, meanwhile, will have its standard lineup.

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired North American distribution rights to music-themed documentary The Elephant 6 Recording Co., setting an August 25 theatrical release date for the directorial debut of C.B. Stockfleth.

The film, an inside look at the influential underground music movement, premiered at Doc NYC last November and held its international premiere at Cph:dox in Copenhagen in March.

“In 1985, a group of Louisiana high schoolers began experimenting with whatever random instruments and gear they could find,” a description of the documentary notes. “This core group became the basis for a loose music collective that became known as the Elephant 6 Recording Co. and comprised bands Neutral Milk Hotel, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Apples in Stereo, Elf Power and many others. Influenced by psychedelic pop of the Beatles and the Beach Boys and a lo-fi DIY approach, the bands that coalesced around the Elephant 6 banner epitomized for many alternative and indie rock of the ‘90’s.

“History of the World, Part II” has become Hulu’s most-watched scripted original of 2023 in its first week of launch, TheWrap can exclusively report.

The eight-episode comedy received the most hours watched when compared to any other Hulu scripted original series within the first week of its launch. Spoofs are all about volume. Deliver enough punchlines and there are almost guaranteed to be duds — but if you get enough big laughs, viewers will be too busy wheezing and wiping away tears to notice.

A 90-minute movie comprising rare, crowd-sourced live footage of Fugazi will screen in Washington D.C. next month to mark the 20th anniversary of the band’s final show.

We Are Fugazi From Washington, DC will screen one night only on Feb. 11 at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in D.C. As part of the tribute to the post-hardcore legends, tickets will only be 5 — the same amount Fugazi always tried to charge for their shows.

“History of The World: Part II” star Nick Kroll says the new Hulu series continues Mel Brooks’ legacy of “poking fun at those in power.”

“Mel’s ultimate goal was always to poke fun at those in power and how greedy and stupid they were,” Kroll said during the 2023 Television Critics Association’s Winter Press Tour on Saturday. “And so doing a show about history now at a time when we are reexamining the past, how things went down, it became a very easy through-line to just continue Mel’s legacy of poking fun at those in power.”

While the landscape of comedy has shifted in the 40 years since Brooks’ film “History of The World: Part I” was released, Kroll argues that comedians can “still say and do insane things.”

“They just have to be a little more thoughtful about how and why you’re saying them,” he added.

Legendary funnyman Mel Brooks is on hand to tee up the first teaser trailer for Hulu’s History of the World, Part II miniseries, which of course is a follow-up to his 1981 film and, similarly, features a veritable “Who’s Who” of familiar faces.

The streaming service launched the series, which came via its acquisition of short-form service Quibi, in March.

Deadline understands that the decision had nothing to do with the Oscars incident, where Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage, but a somewhat unusual issue with timing.

In the star-packed effort directed by Lance Bangs and exec produced by Harrison’s son Dhani Harrison with David Zonshine, the new “My Sweet Lord” video stars Fred Armisen and Vanessa Bayer as “metaphysical special agents” searching for something that can’t be seen. Sending them on the mission: Star Wars‘ Mark Hamill himself.

They knew that one of their favorite labels, the esteemed indie Touch and Go, would be putting it out, but otherwise, the future seemed uncertain. Though the band wasn’t paying their bills, the members, all in their early twenties, had taken time off from college to facilitate the intensive rehearsals that birthed five of the album’s six tracks.

Will Smith is joining the ever-growing sheaf of Hollywood talent in Quibi’s quiver.

The Jeffrey Katzenberg-founded mobile subscription service announced the acquisition of “This Joka,” a 16-episode stand-up comedy series hosted and executive produced by Smith. Quibi is set to debut next Monday, April 6, with 50-odd shows. For now, there’s no premiere date for Smith’s series.

There’s a golf tie-in: “This Joka” is a co-production of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook Media and Topgolf Studios, a unit of golf-venue chain Topgolf Entertainment Group. The show is shot on location at Topgolf’s Las Vegas driving-range venue and other spots across Sin City.

In the show, Smith plays host to a diverse guest list of comedians, ranging from up-and-comers to legendary performers. “This Joka” showcases their stand-up sets and will feature one-on-one conversations between Smith and the comedians plus docu-style moments shot backstage and around Vegas.

Exclusive: Quibi has acquired This Joka, a 16-episode stand-up comedy series hosted and executive produced by Will Smith. The series hails from Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Westbrook Studios and Topgolf Entertainment Group.

Westbrook and Topgolf had been developing This Joka since last October as part of their partnership to create original entertainment. It marks the first series pickup for Westbrook since Terence Carter joined the company last fall as Co-President, Head Of Television.

Indie-rock singer-songwriter David Berman passed away in August 2019, and over the weekend, numerous fans, friends and former bandmates gathered to celebrate what would have been the musician’s 53rd birthday with tribute shows in New York, Philadelphia and Portland, Oregon.

At the Portland show — hosted by local zine chickfactor at Bunk Bar — Pavement members Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich covered songs from Berman’s band Silver Jews, including American Water‘s “Random Rules” and Starlite Walker‘s “Trains Across the Sea.” (Both Malkmus and Nastanovich had occasionally performed with Silver Jews.

Comedy Central has revealed the talent list and premiere date for The New Negroes with Baron Vaughn and Open Mike Eagle, a new music and comedy series debuting on Friday, April 19 at 11:00 p.m. Et/Pt on Comedy Central and simulcast on Bet.

Each series episode will include stand-up performances from three different comedians and will conclude with an original music video featuring Open Mike Eagle and a guest recording artist, with some guest-actor appearances.

The New Negroes with Baron Vaughn and Open Mike Eagle is positioned as a socially aware stand-up and music series showcasing a collection of new and established comedians and musicians.
