Since the early days of film, the Western genre has been a staple of the cinema world. Audiences around the world love tuning in for these stories of the West, often featuring cowboys, outlaws, and the sprawling settings of the American frontier. Of course, because of these factors, violence is often a very prominent element of these films. Many Western fans love when the dramatic showdowns between good and evil culminate in violent gunfights, explosions, and all-around calamity. However, it is essential to note that these aspects of the genre are not everyone's cup of tea.

Fortunately, there are still plenty of enjoyable Westerns that don't rely on these explosive elements. From beloved classics to modern stories, many films highlight the essential characters and settings of the genre without diving too deep into the violent side of life on the frontier. It's no secret that Western movies are defined by their action scenes and explosive violence. It's a mainstay of the genre since shootouts and saloon brawls make their way into almost every project that can be considered a Western. However, just as there are many great Westerns where the hero isn't a gunslinger, there are movies that include little to no violence at all. Finding a Western with no violence is difficult, and many have at least the threat of implied violence. However, these films successfully prove that stakes and conflict can be just as compelling without physical force.

Many of these films fall into the category of the best musical Westerns since there are a surprisingly high number of movie musicals set in the Old West. Additionally, comedies and light-hearted projects are all typically non-violent, with moments of action being played for laughs and characterized as low stakes. However,...

Pale Rider is a homage to 1953's Shane, with major similarities in both characters and story beats. Clint Eastwood's Preacher is a supernatural character, with hints about his ghostly nature sprinkled into the story. Pale Rider is not the only movie to riff on Shane, with various films like Logan borrowing its narrative elements.

Clint Eastwood's underrated Pale Rider took a classic Western from the 1950s and gave it a decidedly supernatural edge. Clint Eastwood's Westerns are some of the most defining of the genre, and he was one of the last major stars to make his name on "Oaters." The failure of Heaven's Gate in 1980 killed Westerns for much of the decade, with studios largely shunning them. There were exceptions, like Young Guns, but they were largely seen by producers as box office poison.

For Eastwood's part, he mostly stepped away from Westerns following 1976's The Outlaw Josey Wales.

Petticoat Junction was a classic series set at the Shady Rest Hotel with beloved interactions within the Bradley family. Many cast changes occurred throughout the series, with one sister being played by multiple actresses over time. Notable surviving cast members include Lori Saunders as Bobbie Jo, Linda Kaye Henning as Betty Jo, and Jeannine Riley as the first Billie Jo Bradley.

There are not many living members of the Petticoat Junction cast left, but the few who are carry on the legacy of the classic CBS sitcom. Premiering in September 1963, Petticoat Junction lasted for seven seasons and 222 episodes. The series is set at the Shady Rest Hotel, run by Kate Bradley (Bea Benaderet), Kate's three daughters, and Kate's Uncle Joe Carson (Edgar Buchanan). Set halfway between the rural community of Hooterville and the small town of Pixley, California, Shady Rest received all kinds of visitors.

"Petticoat Junction" was the unofficial second part of the Paul Henning Hooterville trilogy, a trio of 1960s sitcoms about the clash between city slickers and country bumpkins. In 1962, Henning created "The Beverly Hillbillies," a series about hillbillies who, when they strike oil, move to Beverly Hills. In 1965, he inverted the formula with "Green Acres," a show about millionaires who move to a farm to learn about country living. Sandwiched in between the two was "Petticoat Junction," which debuted on September 24, 1963. "Junction" took place at the Shady Rest Hotel, overseen by the lovable widowed hayseed Kate Bradley (Bea Benederet). She and her uncle Joe (Edgar Buchanan) would run the hotel and oversee the shenanigans of her three daughters Betty Jo, Billie Jo, and Bobbie Jo.

Jackie Loughery, who parlayed a victory in the first Miss USA pageant into an acting career that included a prominent role opposite future husband Jack Webb in the 1957 military drama The D.I., has died. She was 93.

Loughery died Friday in Los Angeles, Webb biographer Dan Moyer told The Hollywood Reporter. “She was like a mother to me and called me her kid,” he said.

The Brooklyn native also served as Johnny Carson’s assistant on a game show and appeared in the Western comedy Pardners (1956), starring Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis; the melodrama Eighteen and Anxious (1957), starring William Campbell; and the political drama A Public Affair (1962), starring Edward Binns.

And for television, Loughery portrayed the niece of the title character (Edgar Buchanan) on the 1955-56 syndicated Western series Judge Roy Bean.

Vintage film restoration and distribution company Film Masters continues its tribute to the pope of pop cinema, Roger Corman, with the third installment of The Filmgroup series on Blu-ray and DVD, The Devil’s Partner, available 16th January 2024.

Corman and his brother, Gene, founded The Filmgroup to distribute their own films. While the company did produce the majority of its films, including the cult classic Creature From The Haunted Sea, it also occasionally acquired projects by other filmmakers, as is the case with The Devil’s Partner (1961). From director Charles R. Rondeau, the film is a macabre tale of an elderly man who regains his youth after making a deal with the devil. During the summer and fall of 1961, the two films were often paired as a double feature.

Based on Emile Zola’s 1980 novel La Bête Humaine, Fritz Lang’s Human Desire is an entirely different beast than Jean Renoir’s 1938 adaptation. The Renoir film’s pointed humanism and everybody-has-their-reasons ethos is swapped out here for a considerably steelier point of view. Indeed, the film is less interested in its characters’ interiority than it is in viewing their lives through a fatalistic lens.

Once upon a time, MGM launched a big spectacle Western remake with the top star Glenn Ford and the bright import Maria Schell — and then second-guessed the whole production, cutting back on everything so severely that director Anthony Mann ankled the set for Spain and El Cid. The storytelling is a mess — after starting big, the show soon falls into pieces. But many of individual scenes and set pieces are exemplary, especially Mann’s re-run of the Oklahoma Land Rush, staged in Arizona and augmented by classy special effects. The large cast rounds up some big talent — Mercedes McCambridge, Russ Tamblyn — to tell Edna Ferber’s multi-generational story about ambition, intolerance and dreams of glory on the frontier.

The Warner Archive has released the 1965 comedy "The Rounders" on Blu-ray. The film is primarily notable for the  teaming of Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda, two estimable Hollywood stars who could be relied upon to play convincingly in both dark, somber dramas and frolicking comedies. "The Rounders" was directed and written by Burt Kennedy, who adapted a novel from by Max Evans. Kennedy was a veteran of big studio productions who worked his way from screenwriter to director. If he never made any indisputable classics, it can be said that he made a good many films that were top-notch entertainment. Among them: "Support Your Local Sheriff", "The War Wagon", "Hannie Caulder" and "The Train Robbers". While Westerns were Kennedy's specialty, he did have a prestigious achievement with his screenplay for Clint Eastwood's woefully underseen and under-praised 1990 film "White Hunter, Black Heart". Chicago – There is not quite any entertainment like a great John Wayne picture, and “McLintock!” certainly fulfills that expectation. But in adapting Shakepeare’s “Taming of the Shrew,” they forgot that the womenfolk had progressed a bit since the spankings that were liberally doled out against the wives and daughters.

Produced in 1963, this is an old fashioned comedy western, with old fashioned John Wayne values. The Duke gives screen time to the plight of the Indians, but obviously can’t tolerate Eastern educational elites, certain politicians and women outside there roles as housekeepers. Wayne portrays a wealthy cattle driving man, and he works for “the people who buy the T-bone steak.” That rugged individualism sums up “McLintock!.” but along the way there is some true fun, and a nice vehicle for some Silver Era character actors, including the great Jerry Van Dyke.

Modern film fans often downplay the value of most pre-1960 westerns, dismissing them as all the same. Of course, this is not the case; westerns were usually built around a charismatic actor or scenic locale, and their penchant for strong moral lessons gives each a distinctive personality.

Wild Stallion, a 1952 Monogram western, plays more like one of the live-action Disney dramas of the era than a standard western, which is actually part of the charm. There's a strong story here, even if there's a bit of wooden acting from some involved.
