There are a lot of Marvel Studios projects to look forward to in 2025. That's certainly a good thing, because as great as the offerings from the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been this year, there haven't been that many of them. We had Echo at the beginning of the year on Disney Plus, Deadpool and Wolverine released in theaters this summer, and Agatha All Along closed things out with a spookily sensational run on Disney Plus that had the world guessing the whole way throughout.

The third and final season of What If...? is set to premiere this holiday season, and separate animated series X-Men '97 enjoyed a critically-acclaimed run earlier this year. It's been a good year for Marvel, but there were also a number of titles that were supposed to release this year that didn't due to delays.

For the mutants in the Marvel Universe, the “X” once represented hope and unity. Two lines, crossing together. Inspired by the dream of Charles Xavier of mutantkind and mankind coexisting, the X-Men reinforced this, incorporating the letter into their name as if to say “We will protect the futures of man and mutant alike, no compromise.”

It was a hopeful dream, born of good and evil ideas that represented parallels to our world, such as the fight for civil rights. This was no more apparent than how Xavier and rival Magneto compared to real-life civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X.

There was so much to love about the '90s "X-Men" animated series that creating a revival show in 2024 seemed like a risky maneuver. But Disney's legacy sequel series, "X-Men '97," debuted to great reviews, providing '90s kids everywhere with a straight shot of animated nostalgia. Of course, the 2024 version of the show was a lot cleaner than the Og series, which originally ran from 1992 to 1997 on Fox Kids. "X-Men" debuted during a time when hand-drawn animation done under a tight budget and often shipped overseas for coloring gave all our favorite cartoons a charmingly janky aesthetic. That same feel was missing from the revival show, but that was really the only thing that felt different.

To make sure this particular nostalgia-fest hit properly, Disney and Marvel ensured they did everything they could to make "X-Men '97" feel as close to the original series as possible. The show was...

Back in March, the surprising news broke that Marvel Studios/Disney had fired X-Men '97 showrunner Beau DeMayo shortly before the animated revival show's world premiere.

Since then, the internet has been rife with rumors and speculation about what might have led to DeMayo's dismissal, and last month, Marvel finally released a statement on the matter.

"Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation. Given the egregious nature of the findings, we severed ties with him immediately and he has no further affiliation with Marvel."

Though no specific details were revealed, we have since heard that DeMayo was terminated for sending lewd photos to members of his staff, and there have been further reports of him being physically and sexually inappropriate with several of his colleagues.

DeMayo has denied this, suggesting that his firing was simply due to homophobia, and claiming that he was stripped of his X-Men '97...

Beau DeMayo was fired as X-Men '97 showrunner back in March prior to the show's world premiere, but he had already completed work on the scripts for the second season of the acclaimed animated revival series.

Now, Marvel Studios has hired a new scribe to replace him for the in-development season 3, with Deadline reporting that Matthew Chauncey, who has previously worked on episodes of What If...? and Ms. Marvel, will succeed DeMayo as head writer on X-Men '97.

Chauncey will work alongside director Jake Castorena, with original '90s series EPs Larry Houston and Eric and Julia Lewald remaining on board as consulting producers.

Exact season 2 plot details are still under wraps, but during a recent interview with Discussing Film, Castorena was asked if they intend to hold on to the '90s aesthetic, and if he anticipates the show taking influence from later comic book runs for the second season.

X-Men... 2000?

Although the recent Disney+ show served as a revival of an animated series that aired 25 years ago, the decision was made to keep the action rooted firmly in the original era. But with season 2 already confirmed and reports that Marvel Studios fully intends to keep the show going for as long as possible, could the mutant heroes make the jump into the noughties?

During an interview with Discussing Film, supervising director Jake Castorena was asked if they intend to hold on to the '90s aesthetic, and if he anticipates the show taking influence from later comic book runs for the second season.

Despite being fired as X-Men '97 showrunner (the details are still sketchy) shortly before the series premiered on Disney+, Beau DeMayo has remained active on social media, sharing intriguing insights into the development of the animated revival show and revealing some of his key influences.

DeMayo has previously explained how the iconic "Superman takes flight" sequence from Zack Snyder's Man of Steel inspired a similar moment from episode 6 featuring Storm regaining her powers, and has now revealed that a different scene may have "subconsciously influenced" Rogue attacking the villainous Bastion in the recent season finale.

I was likely subconsciously influenced by this when writing the #xmen97 finale beat of Rogue punching Bastion. That’s not Superman hammering Zod.

X-Men '97 was a big hit with critics right from the start, but the Disney+ revival series has now become the highest-rated Marvel Studios project - live-action or animated, big or small screen - in the 16-year history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

With more reviews now counted for last Wednesday's season finale, X-Men '97 has reached a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. This takes it past Marvel's previous top-rated Disney+ show, Ms. Marvel (98%), and movie, Black Panther (96%), to become the most positively-reviewed MCU project of all time on the popular aggregator site.

The series wasn't only a critical favourite, as Deadline reports that May 15th's cameo-filled finale, "Tolerance is Extinction, Part 3," amassed a whopping 3.5 million views globally in its first five days on the streaming platform, making it the most-viewed full-length animated series finale since Season 1 of What If…?.

Exclusive: The finale of X-Men ’97 has set a promising track record for Disney+.

The episode, which debuted on May 15, saw 3.5M views globally in its first five days on the streaming platform. That makes it the most-viewed full-length animation series finale since Season 1 of What If…?, the Walt Disney Company says.

According to Disney, viewership had been growing consistently over the four episodes leading to the finale.

X-Men ’97 premiered in March with 4M views collectively across the first two episodes in their first five days on the platform.

The exact breakdown of viewership for each episode is unclear, but regardless it does indicate a strong, growing interest for the animated series, since the finale alone was nearly able to match the audience of the first two episodes in the same time frame.

As an added bonus, Disney also says that viewership for the original 1992 X-Men animated series has doubled since X-Men ’97 premiered.

After an exciting, often shocking run of episodes, the season 1 finale of X-Men '97 hits Disney+ next Wednesday, and (former) showrunner Beau DeMayo has shared some "homework" for fans who might want a cryptic hint about what to expect from "Tolerance is Extinction - Part 3."

DeMayo posted an image from Star Trek: The Next Generation season 5, episode 18, "Cause and Effect." This episode of the beloved sci-fi series saw the crew of the Enterprise caught in a time-loop, with the ship being destroyed over and over again, and Picard, Riker, Data and co. having to figure out how to reset the anomaly.

Does this suggest that the X-Men will find themselves in a similar situation? "Tolerance is Extinction - Part 2" certainly left the team in dire straits, with Jean Grey killed(?) by a Mr. Sinister-controlled Cable, and Wolverine's Adamantium...

There's only two more episodes of X-Men '97 to go, and Marvel Studios has released a clip from tomorrow's penultimate season 1 chapter, "Tolerance is Extinction - Part 2."

The preview finds our mutant heroes suiting-up in new costumes for their impending battle with Bastion and his forces.

The outfits are a mixture of the team's classic looks, and the costumes they wore in the pages of The Uncanny X-Men. The clip also sees Jubilee burn Roberto DaCosta's business card, so Sunspot must have decided not to join the fight.

Former showrunner Beau DeMayo hinted at the costume change when he shared the unused pilot for Pryde of the X-Men earlier today.

DeMayo was also asked if he's ever heard any talk of adding Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat to the X-Men '97 roster.

"I haven’t, but my suspicion is Jubilee and Kitty slightly compete in terms of their age and Pov on the team.

"Magneto was right..."

Former X-Men '97 showrunner Beau DeMayo has taken to social media to share a "homework assignment" for fans that may want a better idea of what to expect from the middle chapter in the three-part season finale, which airs on Disney+ next Wednesday.

DeMayo posted the cover to 1993's Uncanny X-Men #304, which marked the 30th anniversary celebration of the iconic mutant heroes, and the third chapter in the "Fatal Attractions" storyline.

For decades, Hollywood has struggled with the concept of the reboot.

Not merely the "remake," which was a fairly common occurrence ever since Hollywood figured out how to upgrade the technology of The Wizard of Oz (1910) and re-film The Wizard of Oz (1939) -- now with sound and color! -- but specifically, the reboot. 

As in upgrading not the technology but the culture of the original piece.

When The Brady Bunch Movie reboot came out in 1995, it was an audacious spectacle. It was reimagined as a tongue-in-cheek parody of 1960s/1970s culture and of the naivete of the original series. 

By the early 2000s, reboots were no longer quirky experiments of avant-garde filmmakers but big money makers and even award-winning art films.

By the time Disney, Marvel, DC Comics, and Hasbro joined the reboot revolution, audiences had been lulled into a sense of tepid acceptance of all things rebooted. The visual effects were out of control.

It’s easy to forget about the X-Men in a world where the Avengers have dominated the box office for over a decade. Despite both teams being introduced to the world with their comic books in 1963, the Avengers always seemed to edge ahead in popular culture. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is the second highest grossing movie of all time with $2.7 billion, and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ is the closest X-Men film to that success with $746 million.

The debate over which team is better may never end, but ‘X-Men ‘97’ provides a strong argument for fans on the mutants’ side. The first two episodes of the Disney+ series launched on March 20. According to the company, it is now the most viewed full-length animated series premiere on the streamer since What If…? Season 1.

Beau DeMayo, head writer and executive producer of Disney+’s X-Men ’97, Marvel Animation’s revival of the classic ’90s animated series, has parted ways with Marvel just ahead of the series premiere, sources close to the project tell Deadline.

A reason for his departure is not clear. De Mayo had already completed writing both seasons 1 and 2 of the series, which holds its L.A. premiere tomorrow, March 13. The series begins streaming its first season March 20 on Disney+.
