Five new podcasts are announced by the BBC – but every one of them comes with a host who already has some profile.
An update! I’ve now been in contact with the BBC, and have happier news to report. Unlike some of the big commercial podcast companies, the corporation does indeed have a scheme running that’s actively looking for new podcast voices. This is all part of BBC Audio Labs, for which new applications open shortly, and successful applicants don’t just get to make their shows, but get marketing, social and PR support.
I’m leaving the original story here, but I want to acknowledge that I may have been a bit harsh towards the BBC here. I still wish it could do more, as you’d expect, but I’m thrilled it’s doing what many others aren’t.
Up front, just want to say: no slight...

A number of former EastEnders stars are returning to Albert Square to film scenes for Dot Cotton’s funeral.
June Brown, who portrayed the long-running soap character, died in April at age 95.
Although she’d played the role since 1985, Brown stepped away from the programme in 2020, putting her departure down to feeling underwhelmed by the recent storylines she’d been offered.
Dot’s final appearance on the show took place in January 2020 via a voicemail left for Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy), explaining that she had fled Albert Square for Ireland.
In light of Brown’s real-life death, the soap will announce the character’s demise in the coming weeks.
As a way of paying respects to both the character and the actor, EastEnders will air special funeral scenes saying goodbye later this year, which will see some characters return for the occasion.

Well… last weeks episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK was a lot! We had a very interesting comedy challenge performed in front of an empty audience, with one of the queens jokes having to be bleeped-out due to their nan ringing up the BBC (it was A’whora); we had drama by the bucket full; Tayce told everyone about her love for beans on toast which led to her being given a PR package from the king of beans, Heinz, themselves (Heinz if your reading this I also love beans!) and Tayce gained the title of drag race assassin after her third time in the bottom, as she sent home her roommate A’whora. So yeah… last week episode was something and I was excited to see how everyone would deal with the fallout this week.
We are at the semi-final episode, which means that only four queens are remaining in the competition.

Last week on “RuPaul’s Drag Race UK” the top 5 queens had their toughest challenge yet — standing up in front of a live audience of blow up dolls to deliver laugh-out-loud comedy sets. After winning the week’s mini challenge, badgeless Ellie Diamond was given the opportunity to se the order for the night and strategically put everyone at a disadvantage. The move set Lawrence Chaney and A’Whora off their games, but only A’Whora succumbed to the pressure. She found herself lip syncing for her life against best friend Tayce who managed to win her third head-to-head, sending A’Whora packing and making herself an bonafide assassin.
RuPaul Charles is back again to host the second season of the UK series alongside her longtime friend and collaborator Michelle Visage. They’re joined on the panel by entertainment legends Alan Carr and Graham Norton, as well as a collection of guest judges throughout the season.

Tracey Ullman's last BBC series - A Kick up the Eighties and Three of a Kind - aired in the 1980s, after which she concentrated on a Us TV career.
The actress and comedian - who will portray various characters living in, or visiting, the UK - said: "It's a privilege to be doing this. I still feel as inspired to inhabit people as I did when I was 6, standing on the window sill in my mother's bedroom, putting on a show.
"The BBC has changed a bit since the last time I worked here, when it was all men in bow ties who had completed National Service. Now there are a lot more women. Great ones.

EastEnders' Natalie Cassidy will get a lesbian storyline again - despite previously quitting the soap over a similar plot. The actress' character Sonia Fowler has been getting close to openly lesbian pal Tina Carter (Luisa Bradshaw-White) in recent weeks and viewers will see the pair share a kiss next month after Tina comforts Sonia over her mum Carol's cancer. However, Natalie, 30, previously left 'EastEnders' in 2006, partly blaming her lesbian storyline with nurse Naomi Julien, played by Petra Letang for her exit. The actress previously said: ''One of the reasons I left was the storyline. I felt it wasn't right for Sonia.

London, Jan 15: A racist quip made by new actress Rakhee Thakrar's Pakistani character, Shabnam Masood, on BBC soap opera 'EastEnders' has offended and left many viewers in a state of shock.
In the episode, Shabnam told her father Masood that dating a white woman, Carol Jackson, wasn't right for him, Metro.co.uk reported.
While one viewer tweeted that Shabnam's racist comment was shameful for the EastEnders' production team, another said that Shabnam's line is like Jackson saying she doesn't want to go out with Masood because he's black.
The comment also over shadowed Natalie Cassidy's fictional character Sonia.

We should have known that Fifty Shades of Grey would never die. Just when we thought every copy of El James's whip-heavy fanfiction-turned-literary phenomenon had been permanently closed, the forthcoming movie adaptation sprang into life with the announcement last week that Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam will play kinky lovers Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey.
Having read the book and concluded that it is totally ridiculous, we're not exactly confident that it will transfer well to the big screen (and apparently neither are you guys).
Still, we expect there'll be plenty of Fifty Shades enthusiasts queuing up at cinemas when the movie is released on August 1, 2014 - including a few celebs. Read on to discover which famous fans are counting down the days to the premiere and who will be giving Christian Grey and his "sphinx-like smile" a wide berth.

Britain's Got Talent rumbled on with another host of acts desperately trying to win the judges' approval. Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams witnessed a whole range of different performers this week, all with the same goal.
The first act to go through was schoolboy friends Jack Duff and Corman Connell. They impressed all four judges with their performance, including Cowell, who praised their song choice - 'Little Talks' by Of Monsters and Men. He said: "I do like your taste in music; it does feel like you've chosen the songs, not your mum."
Body Shop worker Philip Green also impressed the judges with his impressions. After impersonating former EastEnders star Natalie Cassidy, Lorraine Kelly, Stacey Solomon, Kim and Aggie and Louie Spence, he breezed through to the next round. Cowell described him as "slightly bonkers", while Dixon said that he was "funny and loveable".

Let's Dance for Sport Relief host Alex Jones has said that she is saddened by suggestions that Sir Bruce Forsyth is too old for Strictly Come Dancing.
Speaking to Digital Spy, the One Show presenter - who finished fifth in the 2011 series of Strictly - said that people should "bow down" to the 84-year-old light entertainment legend, rather than try to force him out.
"[Bruce has] done a brilliant job," Jones said. "It'll be a sad day when he steps down. It won't be the same without him.
"I know lots of people have got varying opinions [on him and Tess Daly presenting], but actually if you picture it without them it would be a very different show I think.
"People are already kind of speculating who will take Bruce's place and I just think, 'Oh, love him. He's still there'. He's really good at his job so let's just let him be."
