Despite the bouncy title, “Lucky Star” is not your average holiday movie. When Hallmark movies are shot in Canada, they often feature Winnipeg’s small-town charm of a rustic romance and fluffy snowfall). Gillian McKercher, on the other hand, introduces the grit and desolation of Alberta to her first feature. In this salt-of-the-earth tale of gambling, deception, and familial discord, McKercher paints us a picture of a second-generation Asian Canadian family struggling to get by in the dead of winter.
“Lucky Star” follows the eponymous Lucky (played by Terry Chen), who works at a mobile refurbishment business to keep his family afloat. As a reformed gambler, he, just like everyone else, is just trying to get by on honest work. His wife, Noel (Olivia Cheng), works as a high-end tailor; his eldest daughter, Grace (Conni Miu), part-times as a shop assistant while attending university; and his youngest, Jenny (Summer Ly...

Dr. Wang's extraordinary scientific achievements are poorly suited to dramatization. Sight fails to deliver emotional depth, instead opting for surface-level uplifting storytelling. The movie lacks compelling characters and fails to capture the true story's significance.
A cloying melodrama with the texture and flavor of glue paste, Andrew Hyatt's Sight is living proof that inspirational source material is no substitute for engaging filmmaking. In some ways, this isn't the movie's fault. After a shocking opening, Sight's main aim is to uplift without ever challenging the audience with anything too alarming. And yet, while the storytelling is as gently numbing as local anesthesia, the movie suffers from a lack of real drama, emotional subtlety, and compelling characters a missed opportunity, considering the real events behind the production.

Call “Sight” a stealth faith-based movie and you won’t be far off the mark. For the most part, it’s a respectful but unremarkable biopic about Dr. Ming Wang, a Chinese-born, Nashville-based eye surgeon whose innovative use of amniotic membrane contact lenses has helped restore the eyesight of millions of patients, many of them children. But the end, which contains a Qr code much like distributor Angel Studios’ summer blockbuster “Sound of Freedom” did last year, features the real Dr. Wang — one of the film’s executive producers — in a sequence where he credits his success as having been possible “only with God’s grace,” after he was able to “open myself to God.”

Canadian procedural Wild Cards is coming back for a second season on The CW.

It marks a bit of good news for The CW, which canceled Walker earlier this week, while Canadian drama The Spencer Sisters, which it also aired, was canceled at CTV.
The show, stars Grey’s Anatomy’s Giacomo Gianniotti, Riverdale’s Vanessa Morgan and Jason Priestley, has been one of The CW’s stronger performers over the last year.
Earlier this month, The CW’s President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz told Deadline that he was keen to bring back the show for more episodes.

For decades, Memorial Day weekend has traditionally been a hugely busy weekend at the box office, often offering the biggest of franchise sequels — or in this case, two potential franchise prequels? Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The Memorial Day bump that has helped so many franchise installments before will certainly be in play for George Miller‘s return to the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max with “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” a prequel that tells the earlier story of Charlize Theron‘s character from “Mad Max: Fury Road.” This one stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the title character, joined by Chris Hemsworth as a new antagonist called Dementus, as well a mix of new characters and ones that appeared in “Fury Road.”

Chicago – One of the most reliable and relatable character actors in film is Greg Kinnear. The actor, Oscar nominated for “As Good As It Gets,” has been working steadily in film and TV ever since he made a splash on the scene with “Talk Soup.” From there he was cast in the remake of “Sabrina,” and his roles ascended from there. His latest film role is in “Sight.”

“Garfiosa”? “Furiofield”?
Whatever the portmanteau for this Memorial Day weekend’s dual release of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “The Garfield Movie,” the two newcomers are aiming to jolt the sluggish summer season.
“Furiosa,” the fifth entry in director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic “Mad Max” series, looks to lead the way with $40 million to $45 million from 3,750 venues over the four-day holiday weekend. Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” should trail in second with $30 million to $35 million from 4,000 venues between Friday and Monday. Box office comparisons to the same holiday weekend in 2023 will be tough given that Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” remake took the crown with $118 million.
Warner Bros. spent $168 million on “Furiosa,” not including the many millions to market the movie. It’s not expected to live up to the debut of its predecessor, 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which captured $45 million over three days. That film, led...

There will be moviegoers at the Memorial Day weekend box office; the industry can be thankful for that. Just not as many as the previous two years when the entire 4-day frame exceeded $200M+.
With Warner Bros’ prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Alcon/Sony’s The Garfield Movie hitting marquees, the volume of event product increases, which is good thing. More big movies give people more reasons to attend. Unfortunately, both titles are not Top Gun: Maverick ($160.5M all-time Memorial Day opening record) nor is it last year’s The Little Mermaid stateside start ($118.8M) in their mass appeal.
Furiosa is both a reboot of the Mad Max franchise and a prequel as Anya Taylor-Joy steps into the one armed action of Charlize Theron, who fans of the George Miller franchise are still rabid about when its comes to the desert vigilante’s big screen portrayal. After a...

Surprise! The big twist in "War" reveals Rogue and Lone are the same person, leading to a deadly showdown. "War" ends with a shocking final fight where Lone fatally shoots Crawford after refusing forgiveness. Despite being criticized, "War" is part of Time Out's Best 100 Action Movies list - worth a second look.
Featuring the second cinematic showdown between popular action stars Jason Statham and Jet Li, War is a fun if forgettable action crime-thriller released in 2007. Statham stars as John Crawford, a corrupt FBI Agent tasked with tracking down a shadowy assassin called Rogue (Li) after killing his partner Tom Lone (played by Li and Terry Chen). Although the film was bashed by critics (13% on Rotten Tomatoes), the visceral stunt work and jarring fight scenes stand out thanks to the expert choreography by Hong Kong filmmaker Corey Yuen.

Canadian procedural Wild Cards has been one of The CW’s stronger performers over the last twelve months.
It was somewhat surprising, then, that the show which stars Grey’s Anatomy’s Giacomo Gianniotti, Riverdale’s Vanessa Morgan and Jason Priestley, hasn’t been quickly snapped up for a second season.
The CW’s President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz told Deadline in February that the network was in conversations with Blink49 Studios about more episodes coming to the network.
Those talks are still ongoing, but the suggestion is very much that it will continue on The CW.
“You’ll probably be hearing more announcements from us very soon,” he told Deadline this morning. “That show did great. It grew 10% versus what The Flash did in the same spot the year before. So, here we are beating shows that everyone’s very romantic about. We’d very much like to renew that one.

Last year, Angel Studios opened a booth at CinemaCon in Last Vegas to launch its distribution arm. That paid off handsomely after “Sound of Freedom” exploded to a $250 million worldwide gross. This year, they took to a much bigger stage for a Caesar’s Palace breakfast presentation and announced its intention to stun the industry again.
The Angel headliner was “David,” an animated musical based on the Biblical story of David vs. Goliath. Or, as the studio’s chief marketing officer Alex Nielsen told the audience: “We intend to release the most successful animated film of all time.”
Angel dated “David” for Thanksgiving weekend 2025, but it presented a full trailer and a full song to a packed, standing-room only house inside the Palace Ballroom. The trailer also touted that former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow is an executive producer on the project.

Wild Cards, a Canadian police procedural, has become a surprise hit for The CW.
The series, which stars Grey’s Anatomy’s Giacomo Gianniotti, Riverdale’s Vanessa Morgan and Jason Priestley, launched in January.
It has been averaging over 500,000 in the live overnights, per Nielsen, which The CW President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz says will likely go to around 1M over the first seven days.
This is what constitutes a hit for the network. “That’s a nice success for us. If we can do seven nights a week with a million viewers, that would be goal number one, then two million,” he told Deadline.

Schwartz added that he has already begun discussing a second season of the show, which comes from Blink49 Studios.
“We have not renewed it yet but that is a conversation that’s happening right now.

The following article contains discussions of sexual violence.
The Last of Us episode 8's main villain, David, was somewhat inconsistent in wanting to bring Joel to justice, yet keep Ellie alive for very dark reasons. The episode picked up directly after the events of The Last of Us episode 7, with Ellie desperately attempting to save Joel's life after his injury in The Last of Us episode 6's cliffhanger ending. At first, David seems benevolent. From the fair treatment of his community, his drive to feed the people who rely on him, and his easygoing willingness to give Ellie a valuable resource like Penicillin, David's introduction is seemingly a friendly one. However, after David reveals...

This article contains spoilers for "The Last of Us" episode 7.
Echoing the original video game, episode 7 of "The Last of Us" sets the tone of the Winter chapter by shifting the main perspective from our rugged protector Joel (Pedro Pascal) to his plucky, young companion, Ellie (Bella Ramsey). In the aftermath of Joel's injury at the university, Ellie frantically searches for medical supplies as Joel bleeds out. He's still alive, but unless they can take care of his stab wound, his time is limited. For the first time, the roles between these characters are fully reversed. While Joel is incapacitated, he advises Ellie to turn back to Jackson without him and get help, but ultimately, it's up to Ellie to decide what's best for the two.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “The Last of Us” Season 1, Episode 7, “Left Behind.”]
A lot of the conversation around “The Last of Us” centers on what gets lost after the world changes. There’s societal collapse, transformation, widespread death, and a fundamental shift in priorities. But for all that’s missing in a post-Outbreak world, the series’ latest episode “Left Behind” does make room for a kind of wonder that wasn’t really present in the Before Times. Some of the lone bright spots in the show have come from Ellie (Bella Ramsey) being in absolute awe of something she’s never experienced before. We’ve seen her try to wrap her head around football, airplanes, and monkeys. There are tragic reasons that all these things are novelties to her, but that sense of discovery the show gets from her circumstances is what’s sometimes able to balance out the harshness.
So as the season gears up for the homestretch,...

This Post Contains spoilers for this week’s episode of The Last of Us, “Left Behind.”
The world of The Last of Us is both vast and tiny. Over the course of seven episodes, we’ve traveled from Texas to Boston to Colorado, with a stop in Jakarta. We’ve seen planes crash, society fall, cities be consumed. But we’ve seen this transformed world almost entirely through the eyes of two people(*). Post-apocalyptic worlds are a dime a dozen in modern pop culture. Even a fully-realized one like this...

The Lake is a summertime family comedy that premiered on Amazon Prime Video on June 17, directed by Jordan Canning of Schitt's Creek. The series centers on Justin (Jordan Gavaris), a biological dad who is awkwardly trying to get to know his teenage daughter, Billie (Madison Shamoun), as he shows her the small community around the lake where he grew up. When Gavaris spoke with Complex about the series, he described it as "progressive without feeling preachy," since it features a diverse cast and LGBTQ+ characters.
Although this is the first scripted original series set in Canada for Amazon Prime Video, the cast consists of many recognizable actors including Julia Stiles, Terry Chen, Jon Dore, and Jerry O'Connell. While some of the actors are well-versed in the world of comedy, most of the cast has primarily acted in dramatic roles, and their characters on The Lake provide a pleasant surprise for fans of their previous work.
