If ever you needed proof that box-office prognostication has the potential to be even more foolish than playing slots, predicting next month’s weather, or reading someone psychically, consider this. If you’d said at the beginning of the summer movie season this year that Planes, the not-very-anticipated-at-all spin-off of the Cars films from a Disney offshoot traditionally known for making direct-to-dvd sequels that are best left ignored, would outgross The Lone Ranger domestically at the box office, people would’ve thought you were begging to be taken away in a straitjacket. Granted, not many film writers were predicting great things for The Lone Ranger, but even if it didn’t hit the multiplexes very hard, it would have to do better than, of all things, Planes, right? Wrong. As of this writing, Planes has grossed $89.8 million in North America, while The Lone Ranger grossed $89.3 million. (Planes is, unlike the Johnny Depp Western,...

Earlier this year, Disney released their lackluster spin-off Planes, set in the same world as their Cars franchise, one of the biggest parts of the House of Mouse's merchandising to young boys. Something felt off about all of the trailers, and the film wasn't really a runaway hit (after all, Pixar wasn't really behind the film), but now we know why. It just needed to be a little more gritty. The production company Cinesaurus has a YouTube channel called Gritty Reboots where they take popular video games, TV shows, comics and more and turn them into gritty, cinematic trailers. And that's how we get Disney's Warplanes. Watch now! Here's the faux trailer for Disney's Warplanes from Gritty Reboots (via SlashFilm): Planes is directed by Klay Hall ("King of the Hill," Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure) and follows Dusty (Dane Cook), a small town crop dusting plane who longs...

The Planes Blu-Ray has a release date, and you obviously want to get this one on your calendar, both because you know you want it, and because it’s smack dab in holiday buying season.
You may recall that during our Podcast review that covered Planes, I wasn’t all that favorable of it, but that was mostly because I was holding it to Pixar standards. I didn’t exactly dislike it, but you expect so much at this point that I hoped for more. Of course, the kids wanted nothing to do with my snooty, movie critic take on things, and loved it.
You might also recall that I wondered what direction they would take on the bonus features when this one came out, and it looks as though they are going a bit minimalist. A bad move, if you ask me, but it still looks like we have...

★★☆☆☆ Following the enormous commercial success of Pixar's merch machine Cars (2006) and its sequel, it's unsurprising - if a little disheartening - that we now have Planes (2013), a Disney spin-off set in the same universe. You'd be forgiven for thinking that the project sounds lazy, particularly for a studio known for its originality, and over the course of 92 underwhelming minutes these suspicions are confirmed. Directed by Klay Hall, the extremely predictable narrative follows protagonist Dusty Crophopper (Dane Cook), a lowly crop-duster with dreams of competing with his heroes in the world famous global aerial race.
With support from trusty friend and ace mechanic Dottie (Teri Hatcher), cheerful fuel truck Chug (Brad Garrett) and eventual mentor Skipper (Stacy Keach), Dusty soon qualifies for the competition. Not only will he have to defeat his formidable rivals - including arrogant champion and bully Ripslinger (Roger Craig Smith) - he must also overcome fear of heights.

Kick-Ass 2 | 2 Guns | Planes | The Big City | Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Again | Bachelorette | Call Girl | Aftershock | Kuma | When The Dragon Swallowed The Sun
Kick-Ass 2 (15)
(Jeff Wadlow, 2013, Us/UK) Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloë Moretz, Jim Carrey, 103 mins
The amateur Avengers return, though the sequel finds them weighed down by their superhero lifestyles, or is it audience expectations? The ingredients that made the first movie such a pleasure are all here – absurd alter-egos, ultraviolence, high-school angst, swearing – just minus the element of surprise. As a result, this incident-packed story struggles to recapture that balance between comic-book zaniness and real-world teen comedy.
2 Guns (15)
(Baltasar Kormákur, 2013, Us) Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg, Paula Patton. 109 mins
Two double-crossed undercover agents must unravel a convoluted conspiracy (and learn to get along, of course) in what could almost be a Lethal Weapon reboot. Washington and Wahlberg spark off each other nicely, which is all that's needed.

One gloriously hot summer morning last month I joined a group of intrepid film journalists and kids’ TV presenters at White Waltham Airfield in Berkshire to meet the filmmakers behind Disney’s Planes and experience some truly epic aerobatic flying. White Waltham is one of the oldest airfields in the country, and you may have seen it doubling for a 1950s’ Heathrow Airport in the 2011 film My Week With Marilyn.
The day started with a short safety briefing, where four-time British National Aerobatic Champion Alan Cassidy demonstrated some of the aerobatic techniques used by Dusty and the other Planes characters in the film. Using a small wooden model plane he took us through the various racing turns, half Cubans and, most terrifying of all, the vertical reversal (pulling back on the stick until you’re flying straight up and then, at the top of climb, turning the aircraft to point...

Touted as coming "from above the world of Cars", this DisneyToon Studios production looks to the sky in a bid to recapture the success of Pixar's 2006 blockbuster. Taking inspiration from the studio's least inventive and emotionally resonant film may not have been the best idea, because Planes feels like a tired and lazy retread of an already run-of-the-mill movie.
Here the protagonist is Dusty (voiced by Dane Cook), a small crop-dusting aircraft whose fear of heights are at odds with his dreams of competing in the Wings Around the Globe rally. ‘Elysium’ 2013 movie: The domestic weekend box office leader? (Photo: bald, tattooed, shirtless Matt Damon in ‘Elysium’) So far, there are only guesstimates out there regarding this weekend’s domestic box office. Directed by District 9‘s Neill Blomkamp, the R-rated futuristic sociopolitical thriller Elysium, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, is expected to collect around $30-$35 million from 3,284 locations by Sunday evening, after grossing an estimated $1.6 million from Thursday night screenings. Anything below $30 million will be quite disappointing, considering that the Tri-Star / Sony Pictures-distributed Elysium cost a reported $115 million. For comparison’s sake, M. Night Shyamalan / Will Smith’s $130 million-budgeted After Earth, another futuristic thriller distributed by Sony, debuted with a highly disappointing $27.52 million in late May / early June. After Earth cumed with a ridiculously low $60.27 million in North America — but has been rescued by the international market, where big-budget actioners usually fare remarkably well: $184.21 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

"When I get faced with a situation like that, I can feel fear come up. Then I'll just ask myself, fifty years from now, do I want to think 'wow,...

Ever since the Planes-Tow Mater short film on Cars 2 and the first trailer for a Planes feature film, there was some small hope that this would be a fun expanded world of Cars taken to the skies. Once it was pegged as a direct-to-video release though, some worry started to settle into the air. Then it was noticeable that Pixar removed itself from the production, giving all the credit to Disney, but still marketing it “from Above the World of Cars.” That meant that Disney must have crunched the numbers of the potential licensing deals they could make and get kids (and their parents) to buy into. Unfortunately, Disney’s Planes should have stayed a DVD release.
Disney Animation has been hit or miss as both Bolt and Wreck-It Ralph were enjoyable and original. Like Ralph, John Lasseter was producing Planes, so there was some hope. Meanwhile, Pixar...

We took a trip over to Disney 'Toon studios in Burbank, California, where we caught up with producer Traci Balthazor and director Klay Hall to talk about the Planes cast, the world above Cars and, of course, Top Gun cameos. Q How did you go about casting the movie? Klay Hall: I'm a huge fan of stand up comedians, so I knew that I wanted to get as many funny guys or gals as I could for the film.

The story goes, per a five-part PBS documentary back in the early 2000s about the history of the Broadway musical, that when Andrew Lloyd Webber was shopping around Cats to be performed and produced in the United States, he reached out to iconic producer/director/Stephen Sondheim collaborator Harold Prince. Webber pitched Prince on Cats, inspired by T.S. Eliot’s book of feline-centric poetry, and when he was finished, Prince admitted to not grasping the deeper metaphor. Were the cats representative of the English class system? Was one of the cats a member of the royal family? What piece had Prince not figured out yet, he wondered. Webber paused, then said, “Hal. It’s about cats.”
One imagines that, if he was forced to provide details about the so-called “World of Cars,” John Lasseter would answer similarly. Does it...

Pixar animation studios have been behind some of the finest, most intelligent and poignant children’s movies of all time, with perhaps only Cars (and its sequel) not quite up to scratch with the rest of the triumphant repertoire. It therefore seems somewhat odd for Disney to have taken their most conventional work and provide a spin off. With Cars already filling the void of appealing to a younger, less demanding crowd, ultimately throwing Planes into the mix seems somewhat futile.

Disney takes Pixar's Cars franchise to the skies with Planes, and loses a fair bit in the process...
Here's what I can't get my head around. Pixar has built a reputation on generally strong choices. It's been careful what films it associates with its brand, and it made its place in the world by standing on the shoulders of others and making its mark from there. The Cars films, to be fair, are the least liked of Pixar's output, but at the very least, the animation is quite staggering in places. Even in their weaker moments, there are Pixar hallmarks to be found.
Meanwhile, when John Lasseter began overseeing Walt Disney Animation Studios, one of his first and most popular acts was to kill off the direct-to-dvd sequels that were pillaging the Disney classic back catalogue in the name of a few easy quid.

Dane Cook and Teri Hatcher are the lead voices in Disney's Planes. Cook is new to the kids' world, making his career in more grown-up humor. Hatcher is best known as a "desperate housewife" but has proven herself to be a great voiceover actress as The Other Mother in Coraline and as Beatrice in "Jake and the Never Land Pirates." And Director Klay Hall is known for his work directing animated TV series and movies like "King of the Hill" and "Tinkerbell and The Lost Treasure." So, with all of these different perspectives coming together for one movie made especially for kids, what kids movies do the trio love the best?
Dane Cook, "Dusty": "I love The Incredibles. The scene where they're hiding in the cave and the mother turns to Dash and she has that really poignant movie where she says, "you know the bad guys that are on TV?...

The first shot of Disney’s latest animated feature, is almost disclaimer-like, in telling you you’re in the ‘world of Cars’. Indeed the film is set in the same world as Pixar’s 2006 and 2011 Cars films, but this isn’t a Pixar film, and so having the expectations of one from Planes is probably unfair.
Dusty Crophopper, voiced by Dane Cook, dreams of being a racer, but instead is stuck in the life of fertilising crops. He isn’t built to race, and he’s afraid of heights, but it doesn’t stop him from trying. Determined to prove himself, he competes in Wings of the Globe, a race that literally goes all the way round the world.

Yes, a whole slew of families are going to hit the theater when this animated spin-off arrives, but no, that doesn't mean it's worth it. Without the help of Pixar Animation, Disney is taking us to the sky with Planes, set in the world of Cars. Other than that, this film has nothing in common with the quality we've come to expect from Pixar, even in their less impressive Cars 2. In this new trailer Dane Cook's voice still seems completely out of place as Dusty, and the rest of the characters just seem like caricatures with nothing but lame jokes. The gorgeous visuals are the only redeeming aspect of this film and that's not enough. Watch? Here's the new trailer for Disney Animation's Planes, direct from Disney: Planes is directed by Klay Hall ("King of the Hill," Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure) and follows Dusty (Dane Cook), a...

So, thanks to our friends over at IMPAwards, we have three new posters up for Disney's Planes and, they're well...just there. That's as close as I can get to the emotions these images stir up. The film, which is "from above the world of cars," could however turn out to be a blast, I'm just not convinced as the whole affair seems lackluster for the most part. Planes opens August 9th under the direction of Klay Hall (Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure, Father of the Pride, King of the Hill), with a script by Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue writer Jeffrey M. Howard.

Inspired by the world of Pixar’s Cars, which is of course a favourite for many fans of the animation house, we can look forward to seeing a semi-spin-off this summer in Disney’s Planes.
The animated blockbuster was originally to be released straight to DVD/Blu-ray, but the studio must have really loved the finished product, because they’ve opted to give it a full theatrical release around the world this summer instead.
We saw a teaser trailer earlier in the year, and now Disney have released a full-length trailer, along with a handful of images.
