The best 50 Cent movies and TV shows include a mix of projects about his musical success and past life on the streets before hitting it big. As a teenager, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson was involved in selling drugs, which resulted in his arrest, and he eventually began to turn his life around thanks to his talent as a musician, which started as an underground rapper before he got noticed and signed a major record deal. However, in 2000, someone shot 50 Cent nine times, an incident that played into his Hollywood breakout.
After the shooting, 50 Cent caught the attention of Eminem and Dr. Dre and got his biggest record deal, becoming a star. This led to him selling his life story, and in 2005, he played a fictional version of himself (Young Ceasar) in Get Rich or Die Tryin', which got his foot into Hollywood. The 2013 crime thriller The Frozen Ground has been seeing something of a resurgence since its debut on Netflix, and if you're wondering about the true story behind the movie, we've got you covered. Based on the crimes of real-life serial killer Robert Hansen, The Frozen Ground covers most of the unsettling true story, but there have been developments since the movie's release. If you're considering checking out the movie or you just finished and are looking for more info, here's what you should know:
What Were Robert Hansen's Crimes?
A decade before his more violent crimes began, Hansen (played by John Cusack in the film) gave an indication of his disturbed state. As reported in the New York Daily News, in 1960, a 21-year-old Hansen burned down a school bus garage in his hometown, Pocahontas, Iowa. It was reportedly revenge for his unpopularity and frustrations over being unable to get dates during high school.

One of the peculiar quirks of Netflix is its ability to give a second life to largely forgotten movies. Whether it’s action films, comedies, or anything in-between, there have been a lot of titles that have received renewed attention courtesy of the streamer. The latest of these is the Nicolas Cage-starring The Frozen Ground, which has been dominating the platform for roughly a week now and continues to do so today, currently sitting as the third most-watched movie on the streaming site.
For those not aware, The Frozen Ground is the directorial debut of Scott Walker, who also provided the screenplay. Cage plays Jack Halcombe, an Alaskan State Trooper hunting down serial killer Robert Hansen, portrayed here in a rare villainous turn from John Cusack. Over the course of the picture, Halcombe attempts to keep sex worker and Hansen survivor Cindy Paulson (Vanessa Hudgens) from harm, while working...

The Netflix Top 10 most-watched movies chart is a fascinating thing, offering interesting insight into what subscribers are gravitating towards. Often, you’ll get the usual suspects on there like the newest Netflix original or a classic fan favorite. But just as often, there’ll be some surprises, as is the case today.
Arriving last week on the platform was a Nicolas Cage film called The Frozen Ground. An enjoyable, but unremarkable crime thriller, it didn’t make much of an impact when it released back in 2013 and was more or less completely forgotten about shortly after it hit theaters.
But not long after being added to Netflix, it began to make waves. At first, it was popping up in some of the lower sports on the chart and after picking up a fair bit of steam over the last few days, it now sits as the #1 movie on the streaming site.

Even the most diehard of Nicolas Cage fans would find it tough to keep track of all of his movies, as the once iconic actor’s descent into bargain basement territory has seen him feature in a whopping 37 films in the last seven years, the majority of which have been pretty terrible.
However, every once in a while Cage will deliver a performance that reminds us why the Academy Award winner is still so beloved and cited by many as an extremely talented individual when he wants to be. Unfortunately, though, these instances don’t occur often enough and as mentioned above, most of his work these days is pretty forgettable.
Perhaps one of his better performances from the later stage of his career though came in 2013’s The Frozen Ground, which is now on Netflix and surprisingly, dominating the platform. It currently sits as the 10th most-watched film in...

Robert Hansen, the serial killer who went on a murderous spree in the 70s and early 80s, died at Alaska Regional Hospital on Thursday. He was 75.
Alaska Serial Killer Robert Hansen Dies
Hansen, who had a “do not resuscitate” order, had been in failing health for the last year leading up to his death, reported Ktuu. He’d served the majority of his 461-years plus life sentence at a state prison in Seward, but was transferred to Anchorage Correctional Center in May of this year to receive medical attention.
Hansen infamously confessed to killing 17 women during a 12-year span. He was ultimately convicted for four of the murders in 1984. Hansen, who had worked as a baker in Anchorage and was known as “The Butcher Baker” during the height of his infamy, also confessed to raping an additional 30 women.

★★☆☆☆Based on the grisly case of serial killer Robert Hansen, Nicolas Cage and John Cusack star in Scott Walker's functional yet largely forgettable thriller The Frozen Ground (2013). State trooper Jack Halcombe (Cage) is two weeks away from retirement, at which point he plans to move away from the city of Anchorage with his wife and daughter. So returns the tried-and-tested formula of the nearly-retired cop setting out for one last case. Before Halcombe can settle into a quieter life he encounters a young prostitute, Cindy (Vanessa Hudgens), with mascara running down her face and signs of having been violently attacked.

So here we are in Christmas week, most of the usual streaming companies have done well for you so that you won’t be too bored post turkey when you have to tolerate the family. Ahead of the VOD and home entertainment release of The Frozen Ground, we had the opportunity to speak with the first time feature filmmaker Scott Walker. After a successful career in advertising and marketing, Walker decided to pursue his ambition of telling stories on a larger canvas, and if film was not already a big enough canvas, he expanded it by merging film and the real life events of Alaska’s most notorious serial predator.
Reflecting on his feature debut, Scott spoke to us about reality as the source of ideas, our ongoing fascination with the dark side and serial killers, working with Nicolas Cage and John Cusack, whilst creating an entertaining story out of the horrors of real life, and the impact it had on him both personally and professionally, when tackling the events at the heart of this chilling production.

I was pretty skeptical when I first read about the upcoming release of The Frozen Ground, a film based on the capture of Robert Hansen.
Hansen is an American serial killer who killed an unknown amount of women in Alaska, though we know he murdered at least 17 and did so as recently as in 1982. Only one of his victims, a teenage girl, managed to escape. It was with her help that police were finally able to capture Hansen, who is currently living the rest of his live in a maximum security prison.
To be honest, once I heard that there would be a movie made on the subject, starring Nicolas Cage as the detective who led the investigation to catch Hansen, John Cusack as Hansen himself, and Vanessa Hudgens as the survivor, with a supporting cast that includes 50 Cent, I was worried. I was worried that such a horrific event...

Serial-killer movies are so much more numerous that actual serial killers, and most of them ignore the victims to focus on the predators, which becomes — in the pop culture aggregate — just one more indignity perpetrated on the dead, who so often were targeted in the first place because they were voiceless, ignored by society, and wouldn’t be missed: they were prostitutes, runaways, drug addicts, homeless, or all of the above. Serial killers have provided ripe material for film for several years, both directly and indirectly. Alfred Hitchcock’s seminal horror classic Psycho famously had a lead character modelled after Ed Gein, while David Fincher’s Zodiac notably took a different tack by focusing on an ultimately unsuccessful investigation. The Frozen Ground, thus, despite retelling the true story of 80s serial killer Robert Hansen, already enters a crowded genre. Fortunately, a few choices, including the uniqueness of the setting in which Hansen operated, and was eventually caught, help elevate this to a feature worth a watch, though other issues hold it back from being a top-tier film.
One of the biggest issues of the film is the lack of understanding of character motivations. A lot of this comes from an absence of dimensionality afforded to the characters themselves, an...

Nicolas Cage and Vanessa Hudgens’ latest movie, The Frozen Ground, takes on the grisly true story of Robert Hansen (played by John Cusack), a 1980s serial killer who would take his mostly young and female victims out to the Alaskan wilderness before murdering them. Hudgens plays the lucky girl who makes it out alive, and Cage is the Sheriff tasked with tracking him down.

John Cusack and Nicolas Cage shed their familiar screen personae in The Frozen Ground, portraying real-world serial killer Robert Hansen and a detective on his trail in performances whose lack of affectation surely results from the sobering nature of the story: Hansen is thought to have killed nearly two dozen young women during the late '70s and early '80s. Unfortunately, writer-director Scott Walker's film is a muddled and strangely inert one, generating little of the suspense or anguish its subject requires; despite its high-profile cast, the long-delayed film won't last long in theatrical bookings. A sort-of anti-Zodiac, first-time writer-director Scott Walker’s The Frozen Ground is based on real events in Anchorage, Alaska, in 1983, when after a dozen years of systematically kidnapping, raping and killing young women, serial killer Robert Hansen (John Cusack) lets one get away. It takes awhile for State Trooper Sgt. Jack Halcombe (Nicolas Cage) to pin the crimes on his suspect, however, despite the testimony of teenage prostitute Cindy Paulson (Vanessa Hudgens)....

Director Scott Walker‘s The Frozen Ground is the kind of thriller your conservative grandmother loves. It’s all around safe and plain, simple and to the point, and all very, very by-the-numbers. It’s like an episode of Law & Order expanded to two hours with an occasional polish or two. That idea may entice some older viewers, but after two hours of a “been there done that” on television, it’s not exactly attention grabbing. And this is a movie that conceptually should work. Alaskan State Trooper Jack Halcombe, played by a determined Nicolas Cage, attempting to bring killer Robert Hansen, played by a finicky John Cusack, should be a joy to watch. Not because of its violent content, but because we’re seeing two notable actors facing off. It’s a cat and mouse game approached with smarts, not guns. There’s no scene of Halcombe confronting Hansen at his job or physically accosting him...

Chicago – There have been a depressing number of bad career choices on the part of Oscar winner Nicolas Cage and once-great actor John Cusack in recent years. Anyone seen “Seeking Justice,” “Stolen,” “The Numbers Station,” or “The Factory”? Someone owes you an apology.
The latest entry that merges these two titans of recent B-movies is “The Frozen Ground,” premiering On Demand and in limited release tomorrow, August 23, 2013. ComingSoon.net has your exclusive first look at a clip from Scott Walker's thriller The Frozen Ground , available in limited theaters and On Demand Friday, August 23. The Frozen Ground is inspired by the incredible true story that follows Alaskan State Trooper Jack Halcombe (Nicolas Cage) as he sets out to end the murderous rampage of Robert Hansen (John Cusack), a serial killer who has gone unnoticed for 13 years. In the film, distributed by Lionsgate, Nicolas Cage plays the detective determined to find the killer (John Cusack) who had been terrorizing Anchorage for a decade, while Vanessa Hudgens plays the one victim who was able to escape Hansen and can aid in his capture. Vanessa Hudgens has certainly matured on camera exponentially since her Disney Channel and "High School Musical" days. The 24-year-old actress took a walk on the wild side as a gun-toting criminal who wears a neon bikini in Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers" and now Hudgens is tackling tougher dramatic material in "The Frozen Ground," which opens in theaters on August 23.
The Scott Walker-directed movie chronicles the real-life 1980s Alaskan hunt for serial killer Robert Hansen, who stalked and killed between 17 and 21 young women and then buried them in the Alaskan wilderness. Hudgens plays Cindy Paulson, the only survivor of Hansen, played by John Cusack. Nicolas Cage stars as the detective trying to track Hansen down, and 50 Cent appears as Pimp Clate Johnson.

We're saturated with police procedurals. We've got the staccato story beats of Law & Order and the legato measures of season-long mysteries like The Killing and Broadchurch. The Frozen Ground hits the familiar notes. Its dogged cop is Nicolas Cage as Alaska state trooper Jack Holcombe; its crafty killer is John Cusack, playing real-life serial rapist and murderer Robert Hansen. There's also young prostitute Cindy Paulson, an escaped victim who starts the investigation rolling; she's played by Vanessa Hudgens, inexpertly swearing like only a former Disney star can. Unlike Paulson and Hansen, Holcombe is an amalgamation, and the unification of several different investigators results in Cage's earnest supercop who's everywhere at once, unless the story needs hi...

There is so much to be said for a straightforward, stripped down thriller, one devoid of absurd left field twists, aimless violence and gunplay and excess that smothers what could be considered actual tension. It’s a dying subgenre. Even more maddening is when in the event an effort surfaces, they are often deemed as boring by younger audiences who seem to only be gratified by bombast. I certainly don’t seek to generalize any segment of the movie going public, but the number of times I’ve seen skilful thrillers branded as dull or boring is aggravating. It’s gone far beyond the “to each his own” level.
But I digress. Let me simply say that The Frozen Ground, while not embodying all the premiere qualities of the old school procedural thriller, is far more focussed, unvarnished and streamlined than most. Coupled with a great cast and the foreboding Alaskan wilderness,...

Cold Case Files: Walker’s Debut Unexpectedly Grounded
Nothing beats the successful defiance of negative assumption and low expectation, and with that in mind, director/screenwriter Scott Walker’s debut, The Frozen Ground, is surprisingly enjoyable, as it headlines a couple of major Hollywood stars that would indicate otherwise. Another of those “based on a true story” endeavors about an Alaskan serial killer from the early 1980s, Walker manages to avoid being another entry in a trash heap of similar scenarios, even if his screenplay depends heavily on several instances of cliché. If anything, here is a testament to the considerable tension that can be mounted from a cast determined to give realistic performances paired with a director that seems to know something about developing realistic (well, for the most part) characters.

I just adore Vanessa Hudgens! Besides being a fellow Filipino (yay!), she's been very brave with her film choices lately. She was memorable in "Spring Breakers," and now, she's a revelation in the icy hot thriller "The Frozen Ground." She plays Cindy, a street-smart teenage prostitute, who helps Sgt. Jack Halcombe (Nicolas Cage) bring down the dangerous serial killer Robert Hansen (John Cusack). Based on true events, "The Frozen Ground" is out in theaters and on-demand on August 23.
In this interview, we talked about:
*** How she got interested in making "The Frozen Ground"
*** Did she meet the real-life Cindy?
*** How she prepared the rape scene?
*** The sweet moment with the moose!
*** Does she still speak our native tongue, Tagalog?

Meeting Nicolas Cage for the second time is a marvel. He's so larger than life that it's always intimidating, often amusing talking to the actor. I first met him for what I called the "gerbil" movie, "G-Force." And let me tell you, "The Frozen Ground" is miles away from that Disney flick.
In the true crime "The Frozen Ground," the Oscar-winning actor turned it down a notch for a subdued performance as Sgt. Jack Holcombe, a cop who will do anything to catch the real-life dangerous serial-killer, Robert Hansen (John Cusack). He must learn to trust and team up with a teenage prostitute (Vanessa Hudgens).
The icy-hot thriller will be released in theaters and on-demand on Aug. 23.

While John Cusack has cemented himself a place in film history thanks to memorable performances in movies like "Say Anything," "High Fidelity," "Grosse Point Blank," "Being John Malkovich" and more, he's also an actor with a diverse range of talents. Later this month, he'll be seen playing none other than Richard Nixon in "Lee Daniels' The Butler," showing audiences a different side of his skills. Also coming out in August, there's another movie that will highlight Cusack's range, one in which he takes a role about as far away from Lloyd Dobler as you can get. Based on a true story, "The Frozen Ground"—co-starring Nicolas Cage and Vanessa Hudgens—tells the true story of Alaskan State Trooper Jack Halcombe, on a quest to finally lock up serial killer Robert Hansen (Cusack), who has stacked up bodies for 13 years. A 17-year-old near-victim who managed to escape (Hudgens) provides key information...

A very normal looking Nicolas Cage chases a psychotic John Cusack in director Scott Walker’s serial killer drama “The Frozen Ground”. The film is based on a true story, which probably explains why Cage is so subdued in the role. I’m not sure if I like this. Nicolas Cage not freaking out in a movie that involves serial killers and a trashy Vanessa Hudgens just seems, I dunno, wrong somehow. Check out two clips and a handful of new images from the film below. It’s cold out there for a serial killer. John Cusack's most recent big screen turn, as real-life serial killer 'Robert Hansen' in 'The Frozen Ground', sees him turn in a menacing performance, completely unrecognisable from the loveable, floppy-haired teenage sweetheart of 'Say Anything' times.
His co-star Vanessa Hudgens told HuffPostUK, "I remember him best from 'Say Anything', so it was pretty fascinating to see him like that. He told me about it before I got to be around it, but still, the first time he got into it, I remember being pretty shocked.

It's not the first time Cusack has disappeared completely into a character completely unlike his diffident, laid-back self, evident in an interview he gave to HuffPostUK last year concerning his labour of love 'The Raven' - all about his great creative hero, Edgar Allan Poe.

In this efficient police procedural, an Australian director principally known for commercials reconstructs the story of how Sergeant Jack Halcombe (Nicolas Cage), an Alaska state trooper, managed to convict devious deviate Robert Hansen (John Cusack) of the sadistic killings of 17 women and the kidnap and rape of at least 30 others.
Winning the confidence of a young prostitute, a key witness to Hansen's crimes, was the turning point. Walker never attempts to make it look like fun, and Anchorage at night resembles an anteroom of hell.

Based on true life events (and taking the typical liberties you would expect when a movie proclaims this), The Frozen Ground is an atmospheric and tense account of the quest to end serial killer Robert Hansen's 13 year reign of terror on the streets of Anchorage, Alaska. When teenage prostitute Cindy Paulsen (Vanessa Hudgens) escapes Hansen's (John Cusack) grasp, she finds her story that he kidnapped and raped her falling on deaf ears. The only person who believes her is State Trooper Jack Halcombe (Nicolas Cage), already investigating a string of missing persons case connected to the killer. While Halcombe tries to mount enough evidence against Hansen to secure a conviction, it becomes clear that Cindy's life is still in danger. The feature debut from writer/director Scott Walker, wastes no time putting the audience in the middle of the action, and continues on with a slow, methodical pace. He's crafted an effective thriller here,...

Based on a true story in much the same way as a pineapple is based on a turnip, The Frozen Ground is an effective, by-the-numbers, little true-crime/serial killer flick that, like The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, doesn’t let a little thing like the facts get in the way of its TV movie-ish treatment of Alaska’s Butcher Baker, prolific serial murderer Robert Hansen, who’s currently serving a 461 year sentence for his crimes.
It’s 1983 and when the Anchorage cops are called to a disturbance at a sleazy motel, they find hysterical, semi-clad and handcuffed jailbait hooker Cindy Paulson (Vanessa Hudgens). Kidnapped, raped and beaten by fine, upstanding, pillar of the community, baker and local businessman Robert Hansen (John Cusack), Cindy’s seen which way the wind was blowing when Hansen drove her to a small commercial airfield and tried to load her...

Vanessa Hudgens admits that she can’t watch scary movies herself, despite her appearance in one of the year’s eeriest so far.

Based on the shocking true tale of a serial killer who terrorised Alaska, The Frozen Ground is an admirable thriller bursting with tension and superb turns by its stars Vanessa Hudgens, Nicolas Cage and John Cusack.
Set in 1983, the grim tale concentrates on battered teenage prostitute Cindy (Hudgens), who tells police she escaped from the clutches of a local man intent on killing her. The testimony is largely derided, but state trooper Jack Halcombe (Cage) believes she could hold the key to solving the mystery behind the bodies of young ladies that have been found buried beneath the ice. But Jack's attempts to question shady animal hunter Robert Hansen (Cusack) do not go to plan, nor do his efforts to keep Cindy off the dangerous streets.
