Burning Sun Scandal: How Two Female Reporters And Late Idol Goo Hara Exposed K-pop’s Biggest Sex Crimes ( Photo Credit – Twitter )
The K-pop genre has taken the world by storm, mesmerizing millions across the globe with its well-crafted music videos, high-energy performances, and, not to be missed, the irresistible charisma of the idols. However, what we see often differs from what it appears to be. Situations are direr than they seem, things are more dangerous than they look, and people are more horrifying and complex than they pretend to be. Such was the case with the Burning Sun scandal, also known as Burning Sun Gate, the dark truth of which was uncovered in 2019.
The tragedy that began way before it was brought to the public’s attention, was an entertainment and sex scandal in South Korea, which involved several celebrities, including K-pop idols of popular groups and police officials. A...

Prominent Korean filmmakers and arts organizers will hold a media event in Seoul on Friday calling for an investigation by authorities into the circumstances that led to the passing of Parasite star Lee Sun-kyun, who died last month at age 48 of an apparent suicide.
Before his death, Lee had been under police investigation for several weeks over suspected illegal drug use, accusations he strenuously denied. The actor claimed that he was the victim of a blackmail plot and that if he had consumed drugs, it was because he had been tricked into doing so. South Korean police have said that Lee passed several drug tests and sat for lengthy sessions of questioning, including one marathon meeting days before his death that lasted 19 hours. His lawyers have told local media outlets that the actor was upset by the way police were handling the investigation and how details were being leaked to the press,...

Korean singer Choi Sung-bong, who sprung to fame after placing second on Korea’s Got Talent, has died by suicide, Seoul police said Wednesday. He was 33.
Choi was found dead by police at his home in the Yeoksam-dong district in southern Seoul at 9:41 a.m. Tuesday, according to South Korea wire service Yonthap, which was the first to report the news.
Choi had an underprivileged upbringing and dropped out of music school because he couldn’t afford the tuition fees. After spending years supporting himself as a day laborer, his big break came in 2011 when he landed a spot on Korea’s Got Talent, broadcast by tvN. Choi’s operatic performance of Ennio Morricone’s “Nella Fantasia” wowed the show’s judges and he advanced to the finals, eventually coming in second place by just 280 votes. The YouTube clip of his performance on the show went viral and was viewed over 21 million times,...

Although we should know better what is important in our lives and whose opinion(s) we should care about, we seldom realize it, which is why it sometimes takes a certain situation to give you this kind of epiphany. This idea has been the foundation for countless stories and it is also the core of Ken and Go Ohara's short feature “Setagaya Game”, a movie which blends elements of drama and action into an overall delightful first half, and an underwhelming second, where the audience sees what has actually been going on.
“Setagaya Game” review is part of the Submit Your Film Initiative
The story revolves around Takeru (Reiji Takahashi), who has invited his friends Kotomi (Akari Natsume) and Mitchy (Sho Iizaka) to his apartment to tell them about his new fondness for camping. However, as he has been unsuccessful in finding a job, although he graduated from prestigious universities,...

Mk Raghavendra argues why Amour might not be the best film of the year:
Michel Haneke’s Amour was the most eagerly awaited film at the just concluded Iffi 2012. Audiences waited as the lights went down and responded spontaneously when the tiles appeared – not at the name of the film or the director or for the legendary actors starring in it but at the ‘Palme d’Or, Cannes 2012’ which appeared alongside the titles. What the national audience was clapping and whistling for was Cannes as a brand. Since such conduct implies unthinking faith in the judgments of film festival juries, I wondered if the members of the audience would be bold enough to evaluate Amour on their own after they had seen all of it.
Amour (meaning ‘Love’) stars Jean-Louis Trintignant, Emmanuelle Riva and Isabelle Huppert. The narrative focuses on an elderly couple, Anne and Georges, who are retired music...

It’s been about a month since my last look at what has been going on in the world of Criterion Collection blogs, and I thought it’d be appropriate to finally just change the column to be “this month in…” instead of “this week in…” As most of you know, this past month has seen the birth of my daughter, which has led to a steady decrease in my output of blog posts, but a dramatic increase in my posting of adorable pictures. So, we all win in this situation.
Let’s take a look at what May has seen from the internet’s best and brightest, when it comes to the Criterion Collection.
First up, let’s take a look at our own Joshua Brunsting, who started writing the news here on the blog last May. Josh managed to make it to the Cannes film festival this past year,...
