Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk may have been wowed during his tour of the Squid Game: The Challenge set, but he also made a secret cameo in the show itself.
Daisy Lilley, director of unscripted series at Netflix in the UK, revealed that Dong-hyuk donned the iconic red uniform of a guard and was on-screen putting on a mask.
Lilley disclosed the easter egg during an Edinburgh TV Festival session, in which Netflix and Squid Game: The Challenge producers, Studio Lambert and The Garden, reflected on the show’s BAFTA-winning success.
On Dong-hyuk’s visit to the set, Lilley said: “I was with him as he walked into the marble set and the look of wonderment on his face. He was so chuffed that it had been built. He was picking things up and was like: ‘I can’t believe you managed to find this.’ It was great to have his blessing.

Casting for Netflix’s reality competition series Squid Game: The Challenge was a unique challenge: finding 456 diverse and international lead characters.

Squid Game released a successful reality spinoff titled Squid Game: The Challenge. The series’ creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, was very much aware of the reality show’s development. But how much did he support the series?

Squid Game showrunner Hwang was very sympathetic toward critics of the reality show The Challenge. Fans felt one of the reasons for Squid Game’s success was its commentary on subjects such as classism and wealth disparity. The concern was that a lot of these themes would’ve been lost on The Challenge just based on its nature as reality television. But Hwang felt taking the entertainment aspect of Squid Game too seriously might’ve been a mistake.

In the final episode of Squid Game: The Challenge, the three finalists swapped their green tracksuits for button-downs and devoured a steak dinner on a triangular-shaped table, much like the dining hall featured in Netflix’s scripted drama Squid Game. Instead of a deadly knife fight, the two final contestants, Player 451 Phill Cain and Player 287 Mai Whelan, played the child’s game Rock, Paper, Scissors to determine the winner of the $4.56 million prize. Whelan, who bragged that the hand game was a personal favorite, was ultimately crowned.

At least a couple of the 456 contestants in Squid Game: The Challenge have taken a first step toward filing a lawsuit against the Netflix reality competition, alleging that they “suffered injuries such as hypothermia and nerve damage as a result of poor health and safety standards on set.”
Daniel Slade, Chief Executive Officer (Legal) at Express Solicitors (a personal injury firm based out of the UK), said in a statement that Squid Game: The Challenge players — two so far, by one account — have asked for help seeking compensation for injuries they allegedly suffered during the show’s filming in January of this year.

Netflix isn’t gonna be thankful about this: A legal firm in the U.K. is threatening a lawsuit over injuries sustained by contestants while filming Squid Game: The Challenge.
The British personal injury firm Express Solicitors announced on Thanksgiving Day that it is representing contestants from the show who are seeking compensation for their experience on the reality competition based on the hit drama series.
“We have sent letters of claim on behalf of contestants injured in this show,” CEO Daniel Slade said in a statement. “From what we’ve been told, they pushed the boundaries of safety in the name of entertainment. Production companies need to ensure that health and safety standards on their shows don’t leave people at risk of harm.” The letters of claim are the initial step being taken, and the firm says they are gathering further evidence and will then file a lawsuit if necessary.

From the very moment Squid Game: The Challenge was announced, there’s been a recurring criticism of the show’s very existence. The reality competition is based on Netflix’s hit drama series and has 456 players competing in dystopian kids games for a record-breaking $4.56 million prize. The show is arguably the most cinematic reality series ever shot (trailer below), and hugely ambitious — it looks and plays just like the original drama series that captivated viewers around the globe in 2021. The competition’s 10 episodes drop on the streamer today.
As stated in The Hollywood Reporter’s recent review: “The original Squid Game, the competition stood as an extreme example of the dehumanization of capitalism … The Challenge builds on the most superficial aspects of Squid Game while ditching — or, really, undermining — the most profound.”
But in a new interview with THR, Studio Lambert executive producers Stephen Lambert, Tim Harcourt and John Hay respond to that claim.

“Squid Game: The Challenge” will premiere next week with a prize worth millions on the line. And no one can be trusted in this competition series that was inspired by the hit South Korean thriller “Squid Game.”
“Squid Game: The Challenge” was first ordered in June 2022, less than a year after the premiere of “Squid Game.” The 10-episode show is a co-production between Studio Lambert and The Garden, which is part of ITV Studios. Stephen Lambert, Tim Harcourt, and Toni Ireland from Studio Lambert and John Hay, Nicola Hill, and Nicola Brown from The Garden serve as executive producers.
The show is a spin-off reality competition inspired by the streamer’s successful title, “Squid Game.” That nine-episode Korean language series is centered on financially broken contestants who are invited to play children’s games for a cash prize — but not only are the stakes high, they’re deadly. The show debuted on Netflix Sept.

You’d think that volunteering to go on a reality TV series based on a show about a deadly competition would mean you were prepared to at least fake die — but based on the new trailer for “Squid Game: The Challenge,” that thought didn’t occur to every contestant.
In the new promo for the unscripted show, which debuts Nov. 22 on Netflix and will roll out new episodes through Dec. 6, 456 people are competing for the $4.56 million prize being offered, just like it was in the first season of the streamer’s Korean-language hit “Squid Game.” Of course, in this game, people’s lives aren’t actually on the line — but they still get fake “shot” during a game of “Squid Game’s” most iconic activity, Red Light, Green Light, and go tumbling to their “death” off a bridge in a later challenge. They’ll even take on Younghee, the electronic doll that wiped out 256 of the players in the first round, in the game titled “Red Light, Green Light.”
“Attention players, you will now compete for our biggest cash prize in reality show history,” one of the “Squid Game”- costumed workers said in the teaser clip. The number for the cash prize popped up on the screen showing an amount of $4,560,000.”

Those who play the popular game Lucky Lady’s Charm are no strangers to lucky symbols such as timeless rabbit’s foot, classic horseshoe and elusive four-leaf clover. These iconic charms have long been associated with good fortune and positive energy.
It is not surprising to discover that famous people, too, have the lucky charms they hold dear. Beyond mere superstition, these objects hold sentimental value and unique stories that offer a glimpse into the lives of those who carry them.
Hemingway’s pocket of luck
Ernest Hemingway, affectionately known as “Papa,” sincerely believed in luck and carried several good luck charms throughout his life. While living in Paris as a journalist and budding novelist, he believed in bringing a horse chestnut and a rabbit’s foot in his right pocket for luck.

The dystopian drama “Squid Game” was such an enormous hit, it’s not a surprise that Netflix is turning the deadly game within the show into an actual competition — minus the killings, of course.
Netflix announced on Tuesday that they are launching “Squid Game: The Challenge,” in which 456 real players will enter the game for a chance to win 4.56 million.
“As they compete through a series of games inspired by the original show – plus surprising new additions – their strategies, alliances, and character will be put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them,” the Netflix logline reads. “The stakes are high, but in this game the worst fate is going home empty-handed.”

Welcome to the “Squid Game.”
Netflix has announced the reality competition series “Squid Game: The Challenge,” inspired by writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk’s record-breaking script drama. “The Challenge” marks the largest reality competition ever — so the streamer claims — with 456 real players and a historically high cash prize of 4.56 million.
Netflix’s Head of Global TV Bela Bajaria announced the reality series at Banff World Media Festival. With both the largest cast and lump sum cash prize in reality TV history, 456 players will enter the game in pursuit of a life-changing reward of 4.56 million as the streamer follows the model of “have a hit show, double down with a watered-down reality show spinoff of it, minus, you know, the actual killing.”
It’s also a staggering sum as Netflix right now goes up against investors, a dwindling subscriber base, and staff cuts.
The 10-episode competition series will be filmed in the U.

Netflix is staging a real-life Squid Game series that’s billed as “the biggest reality competition ever.”
The streamer announced a reality TV production based on its global dystopian smash at the Banff World Media Festival on Tuesday.
While the stakes won’t be life or death (presumably), Squid Game: The Challenge will have 456 players competing in a series of games for the chance to win 4.56 million. Netflix claims the payout is the largest lump-sum cash prize in TV history (though Fox’s X Factor has previously given out recording contracts worth 5 million), and that the show likewise also sports the largest competition series cast ever assembled.
“Squid Game took the world by storm with [director Hwang Dong-hyuk’s] captivating story and iconic imagery,” said Brandon Riegg, Netflix vp of unscripted and documentary series. “We’re grateful for his support as we turn the...
