After the screening of the film directed by Cyrus, Jacob Bixenman and Brendan Walter will be followed by a conversation with Cyrus.
The festival, which previously revealed its opening night film would be the Billy Joel documentary And So It Goes, will close with the Leonardo DiCaprio-produced Yanuni, directed by Richard Ladkani. Ilana Glazer spent several years wanting to do a Broadway play, but never elevated the thought to a formal goal. The logistics involved — eight shows a week, working (almost) every night — seemed unreasonable. “The time and the money just don’t add up for a working mom,” she says. And then, last September, Grant Heslov and George Clooney asked her to participate in a two-day workshop for their forthcoming adaptation of their 2005 film Good Night, and Good Luck. The experience, and the opportunity therein, was (finally) rich enough to justify the potential scheduling downsides. “In my mind, and in my husband’s mind, too, it was going to feed our family system in the long term,” adds Glazer. “It’s worth the time away.”

Good Night, and Good Luck, the play about Edward R. Murrow written by George Clooney and Grant Heslov adapted from their 2005 film, grossed $3,784,200 last week at Broadway’s 1,537-seat Winter Garden Theatre, breaking its own previous $3.3 million record as the highest grossing non-musical play in Broadway history.
With ticket prices also on the upswing – average cost last week for a seat to see Clooney in his Broadway debut was $303.40, with premium seats hitting $825 – the play, which stars the ER actor as Murrow and was directed by David Cromer, is taking in more money than any play in the Winter Garden’s hundred-plus years.
The previous record-setter was the 2022 musical revival of The Music Man starring Hugh Jackman, which set the Winter Garden’s house record in March of that year with a $3.5 million regular eight-performance weekly gross (that revival still holds the house record for a special nine-performance week with...

Welcome to Tony Talk, a column in which Gold Derby contributors Sam Eckmann and David Buchanan offer Tony Awards analysis. Following the opening of Good Night, and Good Luck last week, join us as we peel back the curtain of the Winter Garden Theatre to discuss Academy Award winner George Clooney's Broadway debut.
David Buchanan: We have finally reached the end of the "Oscar winners on Broadway" phase of the spring season with the opening of Good Night, and Good Luck last week. Now that we've both had a chance to see it — together, no less! — the big question is how its star, George Clooney, might fare at the Tonys. Nominators sometimes turn a cold shoulder to Hollywood talent on Broadway, but they've also embraced starry names making their debuts, including Tom Hanks in Lucky Guy. On which side of the ledger do you think Clooney lands?

Twenty years after bringing the story of newsman Edward R. Murrow and his efforts to thwart Sen. Joseph McCarthy and the Red Scare to the screen in Good Night, and Good Luck — a work that earned six Oscar nominations — George Clooney has adapted the film for the Broadway stage. Two decades older now, too, Clooney makes his Broadway debut playing Murrow, who was portrayed in the film by David Strathairn in an Oscar-nominated performance. Tony winner David Cromer takes the reins from Clooney as director, pulling double duty this spring with this massive screen-to-stage adaptation and the much-anticipated new musical Dead Outlaw.
Reviews of Good Night, and Good Luck, which opened on Thursday, April 4 at the historic Winter Garden Theatre and stars an ensemble of 20-plus performers, were decidedly mixed.
Jesse Green of The New York Times deems the new play a Critic's Pick, calling it "powerful" with "suave direction" from Cromer.

Late in the action of Good Night, and Good Luck, Clark Gregg — in a moving performance as CBS newscaster Don Hollenbeck, banged up by his recent divorce and a persistent smear campaign branding him as a “pinko” — makes the melancholy observation: “I wake up in the morning, and I don’t recognize anything. I feel like I went to sleep three years ago, and somebody hijacked … as if all reasonable people took a plane to Europe and left us behind.” You know you’re in a New York City audience in 2025 when those words are followed by showstopping applause.
Whatever gains are made in reworking George Clooney’s terrific 2005 feature of the same name — his second outing as director and still his best — for the stage, the material’s timeliness packs a wallop. When the movie was released, questions of media responsibility and freedom to voice political dissent were already pertinent to the national discourse.

There are moments in Good Night, and Good Luck, the new play by George Clooney and Grant Heslov opening on Broadway tonight at the Winter Garden Theatre and starring Clooney as pioneering TV journalist Edward R. Murrow, when the anti-authoritarian passions of all three men are made very clear. Anti-McCarthyism in Murrow’s case, anti-Trumpism for Clooney and, one presumes, Heslow. Unfortunately, more often than not, that clarity comes through speechifying, minor-key tirades and copious use of ’50s-era TV clips that make plain the all-too-obvious parallels between then and now.
We know when, in history and in the play, the inevitable “Have you no sense of decency?” will arrive to put Senator Joseph McCarthy out of America’s misery. When, the play not so subtly wonders, will Donald Trump face the same path?

A couple of days after Hollywood star George Clooneyappeared on the CBS news program 60 Minutes to promote his new Broadway show, President Donald Trump has responded to the actor via social media. Although Clooney did not exactly point fingers during his appearance on the CBS show, he did say that "governments don't like the freedom of the press." It appears that he may have hit a nerve, and once again, Trump has expressed his disdain for the actor, calling him a "second rate movie star."
As reported by Variety, Clooney is currently promoting the stage version of Good Night, and Good Luck, his 2005 Academy Award-nominated movie starring David Strathairn as Edward R. Murrow. The film portrays the journalist's clash (usually broadcast live on television) against U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy in the times of McCarthyism, and the witch hunt that ensued when far too many Americans were accused of communism.

George Clooney is arguably one of the most popular leading men in Hollywood. However, the actor says he no longer has much interest in the romance genre.
"Look, I'm 63 years old. I'm not trying to compete with 25-year-old leading men," Clooney told 60 Minutes. That's not my job. I'm not doing romantic films anymore," he added. The actor is currently preparing for his Broadway debut in the upcoming production of Good Night, and Good Luck. The stage play is adapted from the 2005 film of the same name which starred David Strathairn as the newsman.
Clooney, who appeared in the movie as Fred Friendly, co-wrote the play with Grant Heslov. When asked if he wished he had made the move to Broadway sooner, the actor was candid with his response. The Agency has scored a quick Season 2 renewal at Showtime after a monster debut weekend.
The first two episodes of the espionage thriller have racked up 5.1M global “viewers” on streaming and linear since premiering on November 29. Paramount Global says it’s Showtime’s most-streamed new series in history, though streaming-specific numbers weren’t available.
(While Paramount is touting viewers, it’s important to note that, on Paramount+, the company can’t determine how many people are watching via a single stream, or if anyone is actually watching at all. This likely means that Paramount is using “active sub households” as a proxy for streaming viewers.)

“The Agency” is a success for Showtime, and that’s not a secret. The espionage thriller saw 5.1 million cross-platform viewers globally, making it the most streamed new Showtime series in the history of the network. On the heels of these high ratings, the drama has been renewed for a Season 2 less than a week after its premiere.
Part of that accomplishment has to do with the increased reach Showtime originals now have. In January, the premium cable brand was added to its parent company’s streamer and is now officially branded as Paramount+ with Showtime.

Plot: Follows Martian, a covert CIA agent, ordered to abandon his undercover life and return to London Station. When the love he left behind reappears, romance reignites. His career, his real identity and his mission are pitted against his heart; hurling them both into a deadly game of international intrigue and espionage.
Review: While you may love a good action spy movie, give me a mature, calculated drama about espionage any day. While there is a time and a place for James Bond, Ethan Hunt, or Jason Bourne, the psychological intensity of a well-crafted thriller does not come along every day. The Agency, based on the French series Le Bureau des Legendes, is a solid showcase of deliberate and complex tension done right. With a masterful cast led by Michael Fassbender and Jodie Turner-Smith, The Agency certainly showcases some intense action. Still, it thrives on solid performances from the rock-solid ensemble of acting talent.

Whether the newly released dramatic spy series happens to gain a large following overnight or instead takes a few episodes to gain some serious momentum, November 29 will be known as the day Paramount+ made its mark on the streaming hemisphere. Crafted by legendary Hollywood actor George Clooney and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Grant Heslov, this budding production duo is bringing a show called The Agency to life.
While the initial premise (which revolved around long-term undercover agents recruiting potential allies to their cause) might have sent some viewers away, the trailer for the Michael Fassbender-leading saga proved those naysayers wrong by impressing both critics and home audiences. The first two episodes seem to be doing fine as well in terms of reception. Even before all the fanfare, though,...

Inspired by the French hit ‘Le Bureau des Légendes,’ ‘The Agency’ is a ride you won’t want to miss.
“It’s the Agency. Nothing is personal.” Michael Fassbender feels differently, playing a tortured CIA operative forced out of deep cover, where he must choose between the woman he loves and his mission in the Showtime original series, “The Agency.” Jodie Turner-Smith plays Fassbender’s rekindled flame, while heavy-hitters Jeffrey Wright and Richard Gere round out the cast. There’s a question at play in nearly every spy drama, and it’s a tough one: Can a covert operative be in a truly loving relationship when that romance is built on a state-sanctioned lie?
TVLine put forth the idea during a recent conversation with Michael Fassbender, who plays a CIA agent known only as Martian in Paramount+ with Showtime’s The Agency. The cast includes Richard Gere (Pretty Woman), Jeffrey Wright (Westworld), Jodie Turner-Smith (Bad Monkey) and Katherine Waterston (Perry Mason); George Clooney, Grant Heslov (Argo) and David Glasser (Yellowstone) are among the executive producers.

Conventional spy-drama wisdom has us believe that fictional covert operatives are malleable masters of improvisation who are tough to corral. Correspondingly, their most effective handlers exhibit sympathy and understanding mixed with a no-nonsense willingness to make tough calls. In Paramount+ With Showtime’s upcoming The Agency, that blend of warmth and gravitas comes in the form of the CIA’s London Station deputy station chief Henry Ogletree, played by Jeffrey Wright.

I usually love a slow burn, especially in a spy thriller series. However, The Agency, a new series developed by Showtime that will stream on Paramount+, is a drawn-out progression that gives new meaning to the meandering way incense burns. In other words, the show is all atmosphere, just for show, with very little substance.
The Agency suffers from a severe lack of motivation. The characters are poorly developed, and there is no payoff after the first episodes, where a pilot desperately needs to draw the viewer in with exciting plot developments. The lack of tension and intrigue makes the batch of episodes available to critics feel boring and stagnant.

On November 4, 2005, George Clooney brought the black and white television news drama Good Night, and Good Luck to theaters in wide release. The film, which grossed $54 million globally, went on to be nominated for six Oscars at the 78th Academy Awards, including for best picture. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
George Clooney’s deeply felt docudrama Good Night, and Good Luck provides a snapshot of the moment in history in which a major American television personality named Edward R. Murrow took on the malevolent power of a muckraking U.S. senator named Joseph McCarthy and won.
Shot in black and white in a brisk “you are there” 90 minutes, the film, which screened in competition, lovingly re-creates the studios and backrooms of 1950s New York journalism at the CBS television network, where the men wore white shirts and dark suits, the women fetched the coffee and the morning...

The 2002 film, The Scorpion King, directed by Chuck Russell, depicts the journey of Mathayus as he attempts to overthrow the despotic warrior Memnon. The Scorpion King serves as a prequel to The Mummy Returns, and it helped explain the origin story of how Mathayus came to be the Scorpion King and the villain of the latter film. Luckily for fans of The Mummy Returns, The Scorpion King was able to bring back the same actor for the titular role as well as add other prominent actors to the cast list.
The Scorpion King received modest reviews from critics and currently holds a 41% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the film did well enough with audiences, grossing $180.6 million on a $60 million budget, and it spawned several Scorpion King direct-to-video sequels. Along with the entertaining action sequences, much of the movie's success came from its actors' performances as fantastical ancient characters.
