10 Iconic Dance Numbers in the Millennium ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Hindi Film Music has witnessed paradigm changes in the Millennium. Songs are now promo tools and barely situational, and lip-sync numbers predominantly dance songs. On International Dance Day (April 29), I choose the 10 truly magnificent dance numbers that will always live on. And yes, I have not included Naacho Naacho from Rrr as it was technically not a Hindi movie!
Budtameez Dil / Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
Ranbir Kapoor outdid himself in this song, reviving memories of his father, Rishi Kapoor’s mastery of dance! The musical was enriched immeasurably by this by Benny Dayal-Shefali Alvares song, composed by Pritam with delightfully crazy lyrics (Paan mein pudina dekha) by Amitabh Bhattacharya. And if you thought the dance had a hint of Michael Jackson, please remember that legend was its choreographer Remo D’Souza’s idol.

Singer Asha Bhosle, who carved out her own independent niche and ruled the roost over the world of music, turns a ripe old 90 on Friday, and notwithstanding a long and eventful musical journey of eight decades, neither her vocal cords are tired nor has she retired…
It was back way, some 80 years ago, when a petite 10-year-old girl Asha Mangeshkar earnestly stood before a studio microphone and recorded her first playback song for composer Datta S. Davjekar, ‘Chala Chala Nav Bal…’ for a Marathi film (‘Majha Bal’ – 1943).
Though it came just a year after her father Pt. Deenanath Mangeshkar’s passing (1942), Asha’s maiden number did not exactly set the film industry on fire but she continued to get humdrum singing assignments, and like her older sibling Lata Mangeshkar, continued the uphill musical sojourn.
After many Marathi songs, she finally landed a Hind film song assignment for ‘Chunariya’ (1948), and then...

Says a source close to the project, "They wanted to introduce her properly after the current shooting in Ladakh which goes on for another fortnight. Zhu Zhu was immediately asked to remove her picture with Salman in Ladakh which she had so happily and innocently posted. In the acutely thought-provoking Aligarh, which is about a homosexual man’s right to privacy, Manoj Bajpayee, playing the disgraced professor Srinivas Ramchandra Siras, sits alone in his dingy one-bedroom professor’s quarter, with a drink in hand and a Lata Mangeshkar song by his side.
In the semi-darkness, in a room lit by dim hope, Srinivas listens to the Melody Queen’s ‘Aap Ki Nazron Ne Samjha Pyaar Ke Qaabil Mujhe’, that timeless Madan Mohan composition from the film Anpadh. The song plays on a rickety portable sound machine. But its sound resonates across the professor’s silent universe, like a melodic meteor cutting through a sky of solitude.
It’s a life-defining moment. Director Hansal Mehta holds the unflinchingly intimate camera (Satya Nagpaul’s lensing is lucid, leisurely and lingering) with ruthless resilience on his protagonist Manoj Bajpai’s face. For a good 5-7 minutes we see Bajpai...

However, Madan Mohan never regretted as he was never in the race for awards and focused only on quality music. But there was someone very close to Madan Mohan, who felt the pinch whenever Madan Mohan was declined the Award.
Well, she was Lata Mangeshkar, who shared a warm relation with Madan Mohan and also revered him as his brother.
Lata Mangeshkar was first hurt in the years 1963 when Madan Mohan was declined award for his musical masterpiece Anpadh. Remember the hit songs 'Hai Isi Me Pyar Ki Aabru'.., ' Jiya Le Gayo Ji Mora Sanwariya'..., 'Aap Ki Nazron Ne Samjha...' However, she kept mum.
The second time when Madan Mohan was declined the award for his movie Woh Kaun Thi in 1965 she was not only depressed but quite annoyed and rightly so as each song from the film was a rare gem. Remember the hit parade 'Lag Jaa...

Talat Mehmood, the unparallel king of ghazal needs no introduction. His super hit ghazals like Sham-E-Gham Ki Qassam ....; Jalte Hain Jiske Liye .... Aye Mere Dil Kahin Aur Chal.... are immortal and shall continue to regale ghazal lovers for centuries to come.
However, readers would be stunned to know that though Talat Mehmood, who ruled the mid-40s and the 50s as the most sought after playback singer, had to face bitter competition in the 60s from emerging new talents like Mohammad Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor etc.
In fact, his popularity plunged so low that film distributers declined to accept his songs and music directors had to tragically re-record the song in other singers' voice. For instance, in Dilip Kumar's movie Aadmi, music maestro Naushad had recorded a duet on Dilip Kumar and Manoj Kumar.

Together, they changed the destiny of Bengali popular songs. The Bengali songs of Lata Mangeshkar composed by Salil Choudhary changed the entire profile and personality of the popular film song in Bengal. And now 19 years after the composing maestro's death, Lataji who turns 85 on September 28 recorded a newly-discovered tune by Salilda under the musical supervision of the singer's protege composer Mayuresh Pai. Says Lataji, "Salilda was Salilda. No one could compose songs like him. His tunes were layered and textured and very difficult to sing. I loved the challenge of singing Salilada's 'Raaton Ke Saaye Ghane' in Annadata and 'Rajnigandha Phool Tumhare' on Rajnigandha." Folklore has it that once during a particularly difficult recording of a song composed by Salil Chowdhury, Lataji had passed out. She laughs, "It's a fact. I did faint while singing one of his songs. Salilda's tunes were a special challenge for me. And the fact...

By now, all of us know that Bombay Talkies is a film that not just commemorates 100 years of Indian cinema, but also has four topnotch directors (Karan Johar, Dibakar Banerjee, Anurag Kashyap and Zoya Akhtar) directing a film each for it. Besides the fact that the film is a unique attempt in itself, KJo added some more uniqueness to the film by acquiring the rights of two classic songs that had been recorded by the legendary great (late) Madan Mohan and Shankar Jaikishan. The songs are 'Lag jaa gale' and 'Ajeeb dastaan hai ye' respectively. Speaking exclusively to Bollywood Hungama, the film's producer Ashi Dua said, "The whole thing is so cool. There are many who hail from the present generation, who have grown up listening to these gems. And considering that these two classic songs are a part of my film is a big time boon to everyone alike,...

Mumbai, April 6: Filmmaker Karan Johar has reportedly got the rights to four recorded classics composed by the late Madan Mohan for his production "Bombay Talkies". He is said to have got them free of cost.
Karan will use the songs in the background of the film, said a source.
"Though the film will not have song-and-dance sequences, the music will be played in the background. Karan won't be using the whole songs in the film, just verses from them," the source added.

If we get to hear Lata Mangeshkar's evocative 'Lag Ja Gale Se' in the stunning sequel to Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, it comes with a heavy price. And film producers are poised for a battle with the music company that owns the copyrights of over 95 percent of the vintage film songs. Getting copyrights of classic film songs for peanuts is a thing of the past. Nowadays producers have to shell out small and large fortunes to get the song of their choice from. Recently, Apoorva Lakhia abandoned plans to use the celebrated Manna Dey qawwalli 'Yaari Hai Imaan Mera' filmed on Pran from the original Zanjeer for the remake and instead decided to record a fresh number to be shot on Sanjay Dutt who takes over Pran's number. The reason given for this was the exorbitant price that the music company Saregama-hmv expected in return for the song's copyright.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has always been vocal about his admiration for the Nightingale of India aka Lata Mangeshkar, and had earlier quoted that "Lataji defines beauty for me." He has always been in awe of her and has been wanting to work with her since a long time but he never found a song worthy enough of her voice. And now his dream will soon come true as Lata Mangeshkar has agreed to record a special song for Bhansali's next directorial venture. The song has been composed by Slb himself. Reportedly, the song is on the lines of 'Dil Dhundta Hai Phir Wohi Fursat Ke Raat Din' and will be very similar to compositions of Salil Chaudhary, Sd Burman and Madan Mohan.
