Five years ago, it was announced that Ben Wheatley would be writing, directing, and executive producing Generation Z, a “hilarious, frightening, and political” series that would consist of six hour-long episodes that would “mix flesh-eating zombies into a story that satirizes how Brexit has divided the UK.” That project didn’t make it into production when it was originally supposed to because of the pandemic shutdown… but after making Meg 2: The Trench (you can read our review at This Link and check out our interview with the filmmaker Here), Wheatley circled back around to Generation Z. The show is now ready to start airing on Channel 4 in October, and in anticipation of the premiere, Empire has unveiled two new images. For the male stripper group Wet Dreams, business is not exactly booming. The bottom has fallen out of the market for four middle-aged blokes taking their kit off and, after a disastrous booking at a birthday party, it looks like it’s time to call it a day. However, front man Alan (Dean Kilbey) decides to buy out longtime manager Deano (Liam Noble) and can’t believe his luck when he instantly lands the guys a lucrative gig in a rural part of Essex.
Of course, there’s a catch – and what a catch it is. Not only has Alan not read the small print about the specific outfits he and his mates will be required to don, neither he nor his mates is prepared for the part they’ve been lined up to play in a ritual which plans to bring a murdered 16th century witch back from the dead.

Black Water Pictures is thrilled to announce that their latest horror comedy, Members Club, will have its world premiere at this year’s Pigeon Shrine FrightFest on 24th August. This highly anticipated film, written and directed by Marc Coleman, is a wild fusion of The Full Monty and From Dusk Till Dawn, promising a unique blend of laughs and scares. It will certainly bring a bit of light relief to the otherwise rather dark and gruesome festival.
Members Club stars an impressive, extensive list of British talent including Dean Kilbey, Top Boy), Perry Benson, Barbara Smith, Juliet Cowan, Mark Monero, Steve Oram, David Schaal, Alan Ford, Liam Noble, and Peter Andre.
The film follows Wet Dreams, a down-and-out middle-aged male stripper group, as they grapple with a series of disastrous gigs and contemplate disbanding. Alan, the group’s optimistic frontman, seizes control and secures a seemingly lucrative gig in rural Essex.

A solid Brit gangster film more in the old-school vein of “Get Carter” and “Mona Lisa” than the dog-on-hind-legs Guy Ritchie idiom, Title notwithstanding, our protagonist is an upstanding kind of tough guy — but the criminal world isn’t about to let him go straight. Actor Philip Barantini’s first directorial feature is nothing wildly original in content or style. Still, it punches both elements across with a satisfying low-key confidence, and does not shrink from occasionally letting things get pretty rough. Saban is releasing to U.S. on demand and via digital platforms on May 22.
We meet fiftysomething Eddie Franks (Fairbrass) the day he’s getting out of the joint after a stint of unknown, presumably lengthy duration. It’s clear from the way he’s treated by both the staff and his fellow inmates that he’s respected, whether due to his intimidating qualities or finer ones — he’s wished well,...

"Who do you think you are, some kind of animal?" Saban Films has debuted the official Us trailer for an indie crime drama titled Villain, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Philip Barantini. The story follows a former criminal just released from prison and his attempts to help his family by reconnecting with his daughter and clearing his brother's debt. Despite his efforts, he is drawn back into a criminal way of life, with devastating consequences. As as always when criminals get out, try to stay away from crime, then get sucked back in for "one more job" to settle the score that still ruins everything. Craig Fairbrass (from "EastEnders") stars, along with a big cast including George Russo, Izuka Hoyle, Mark Monero, Tomi May, Eloise Lovell Anderson, Taz Skylar, Nicholas Aaron, Michael John Treanor, Marcus Onilude, Robert Glenister. This looks pretty forgettable and repetitive, there's not much you're...

Director Ben Wheatley is best known for his crazy films such as Kill List, Free Fire, Sightseers, High Rise, and A Field in England. He always does some crazy far-out stuff in his films and I’ve liked everything that he’s done.
He has now made a family reunion comedy that looks unlike anything that he’s made before. It’s called Happy New Year, Colin Burstead and even though it looks like it will be his most normal movie yet, I’m sure that won’t be the case. Wheatley has never made anything normal.
Here’s the synopsis:
Colin Burstead has hired a heritage mansion for a New Year's Eve party for his extended family and hangers-on, with his own wife Val, teenage daughter Fran, and infant son Jamie in tow. Colin's mother–the family's matriarch–dramatically injures her ankle before she has even crossed the manor house's threshold.

"You need to get your house in order!" Limelight Distribution has debuted a trailer for Ben Wheatley's latest film, a familial dramedy titled Happy New Year, Colin Burstead. This already showed on BBC TV last year, after touring around film festivals starting with the London Film Festival. The raucous "family reunion comedy" is about a man named Colin Burstead, of course, who has decided to rent a lavish country manor for his extended family to celebrate New Year. Unfortunately for Colin his position of power in the family is under serious threat from the arrival of his estranged brother David, sending everything into chaos. The cast includes Neil Maskell as Colin, with Sura Dohnke, Marvin Maskell, Nicole Nettleingham, Doon Mackichan, Bill Paterson, Hayley Squires, Mark Monero, Richard Glover, and Sudha Bhuchar. This looks great! This impressed me, and it still has Wheatley's style. I love the dramatic turn in the trailer.

It’s a little bit of an understatement to say that filmmaker Ben Wheatley has not made mainstream movies so far. His films are niche items, albeit sometimes incredibly compelling ones. This week, he makes what might be his most mainstream flick possibly, an action comedy of sorts in Free Fire. Although still decidedly independent, this is like the Mexican standoff sequence in Reservoir Dogs, but if that was an entire 90 minute movie. It’s a riot of a film. A literal blast, if you will. Helping to lead the charge is Brie Larson, who seems incapable of not turning in very solid work when the camera starts rolling. She’s just dynamite. The movie centers around an arms deal gone bad. Taking place in Boston in 1978, two gangs meet in an abandoned warehouse, ostensibly to buy/sell some guns. Set in motion by middle man Ord (Armie Hammer) one...

In today's Horror Highlights, we take a look at Free Fire events at SXSW, a Comet network March contest, and the announcement of Shriekfest Orlando.
Free Fire at SXSW: "Armie Hammer, Sharlto Copley and writer/director Ben Wheatley joined SXSW press and attendees yesterday for paintball, explosions, BBQ lessons, and other ill-advised activities at Austin's Stunt Ranch to celebrate A24's Free Fire. The out-of-control film received an appropriately outrageous event ahead of the sold-out Us premiere at the Paramount, where the audience went wild for Wheatley's action-comedy."
Synopsis: "Bold, breathless and wickedly fun, Free Fire is an electrifying action comedy about an arms deal that goes spectacularly and explosively wrong. Acclaimed filmmaker Ben Wheatley (Kill List, High Rise) propels the audience head-on into quite possibly the most epic shootout ever seen on film as he crafts a spectacular parody -- and biting critique -- of the insanity of gun violence.
