Denise Crosby, unhappy with her role of Lt. Tasha Yar on Star Trek: The Next Generation, asked to be let out of the series in its first season. While the other actors decided to wait to see what would happen with their characters, she didn't want to be stuck on the bridge of the Enterprise just saying "aye-aye" all the time. In a recent interview by IGN, Crosby noted that her decision to leave threw things into a bit of a tailspin for the freshman sci-fi series.
Gates McFadden, who portrayed Dr. Beverly Crusher, during the first season of The Next Generation as well as seasons three throughseven, was fired at the end of the first season, and Marina Sirtis thought she was going to be fired as well. That would have left The Next Generation with no female characters. So Sirtis remained, and Diana Muldaur was hired as the second season's doctor,...

"Star Trek: The Next Generation" debuted on September 28, 1987 to much ballyhoo. A new version of "Star Trek," set a century after the events of the original "Star Trek"? With an all-new U.S.S. Enterprise and an all-new crew? Trekkies were excited, cautiously optimistic that the new show would be a hit. After a few rocky seasons, it was, and "Star Trek: The Next Generation" became a ratings bonanza. Also, while the first "Star Trek" only lasted three seasons, and the 1973 "Star Trek" animated series only lasted two, "Next Generation" would continue for seven year, racking up an impressive 176 episodes. Or 178, if you count the two-hour debut and finale episodes as two episodes each.

Even the most popular and successful science fiction television series see changes to their main cast over the years. From the grueling schedule of long filming hours to trying to seek new opportunities in one's career, there are numerous reasons actors leave fan-favorite roles behind. Of course, there are also more dramatic reasons that actors quit shows, spilling tea on creative differences and behind-the-scenes struggles years after their departure. Even legacy sci-fi properties like "Star Trek" and "Battlestar Galactica" have their own stories of high-profile cast departures, even at the height of their run.
Below, we've assembled some of the biggest instances of actors quitting beloved sci-fi shows and explained why each chose to step away from their respective television projects. While some instances were more cordial and professional, some resignations reveal intense drama and tension behind the scenes. Dr. Katherine Pulaski, introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation’s second season, brought a unique perspective as the new Chief Medical Officer. Her no-nonsense demeanor and unconventional methods contrasted with her predecessor, Dr. Beverly Crusher’s approach. Despite her initial skepticism, Pulaski gradually warmed up to the crew.

For a series that continued the live-action saga that The Original Series established for the Star Trek universe, The Next Generation was easily one of the most popular shows of all time. However, the series created by Gene Roddenberry wasn’t without internal problems of its own and had some major changes in its cast even from its first two seasons.

For instance, Gates McFadden, who played Dr. Beverly Crusher in season 1, was replaced by Diana Muldaur’s Dr. Katherine Pulaski in season 2. However, Muldaur couldn’t stay in the series for more than one season either and ended up leaving after season 2. And, as it turns out, Roddenberry was not the reason why for she most certainly left “under my own power.”

Patrick Stewart, the veteran actor known for portraying the role of Jean-Luc Picard in the Star Trek franchise, has had a great rapport with his co-stars. Being friendly and humorous in nature, there have been very few instances where Stewart might have lost his cool.

In the first season of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," the chief medical officer on board the U.S.S. Enterprise-d was Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), a fearlessly moral, mature character who was already at the peak of her professional career. Dr. Crusher was a great character as she was always eager to speak her mind and always knew where she stood on any ethical issues. Unlike many other characters on the show, who were still discovering their humanity, their career tracks, or their identity, Dr. Crusher had already arrived, as it were. She was one of the few "adults" on the show.
She was also hated by one of the "Next Generation" producers, Maurice Hurley. As Trekkies likely know, the first season of "Next Generation" was a tumultuous time behind the scenes, with show creator Gene Roddenberry, his personal lawyer Leonard Maizlish, and multiple other showrunners and producers...

In the expansive "Star Trek" universe, some of its brightest stars embarked on unforeseen journeys, abruptly departing the franchise to both the dismay and intrigue of fandom.
Why didn't Kirstie Alley return as the beloved Lt. Saavik? What prompted Jeffrey Hunter to relinquish the role of Captain Pike? Who ejected Gates McFadden's Dr. Crusher from the airlock? How come Diana Muldaur, her replacement, endured only a single season? Why did Wil Wheaton part ways with Wesley Crusher? And why was Grace Lee Whitney, as Yeoman Janice Rand, dropped from the cast even before the original series premiered in 1966?
These departures stemmed from a myriad of forces: financial constraints, contract negotiations, miscasting, yearnings for new horizons or strange new opportunities, life-altering events, creative and personal conflicts, or a blend of these influences. Most were unexpected and frequently controversial. Whether these exits bolstered or hindered the franchise, the judgment is yours,...

As all good Trekkies know, "Star Trek: The Next Generation" got off to a rocky start. As detailed in William Shatner's 2014 documentary "Chaos on the Bridge," "Next Generation" was hotly contested, with various producers and showrunners all vying for control over the project. There was a lot of animosity, as a result, and a lot of arguments as to what kind of scripts would be used. Show creator Gene Roddenberry, according to the film, was insistent that he had control over every facet of the production as he had been barred from working on the second, third, and fourth "Star Trek" movies, and wanted to make sure "his baby" was safe. There were, however, reports that Gene Roddenberry's personal lawyer, Leonard Maizlish, was taking completed scripts and re-writing them in secret. Executive Producer Rick Berman suspected that the written notes he received from Roddenberry were actually Maizlish's doing.

"Batman: The Animated Series" may be a wholly original take on the Dark Knight but it's also indebted to numerous inspirations. Show co-creators Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski, along with writer Paul Dini, were keen to draw on not just the best of Batman's history, but cultural history in general. The goal was to produce a show that, as Dini told Syfy, depicted "a dark world, a world where crime really exists on every level." That approach would often cause them to run afoul of the Fox censors, who weren't enthusiastic about the show's mature tone. After all, this was a Fox Kids cartoon.
Thankfully, the team behind "Batman: Tas" were adept at navigating their way through the treacherous waters of Standards and Practices, maintaining their mature vision despite frequent pushback. And that extended beyond the usual stuff that gets censors riled up, such as violence or edgy language. The...

The third season of "Star Trek: Picard" is set to debut on Paramount+ on February 16, and many recognizable characters from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" will be returning. LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, Jonathan Frakes, and Gates McFadden will reprise their NextGen roles, while Brent Spiner will be playing Lore, Data's evil android twin. Additionally, Daniel Davis will also come back as Moriarity, the sentient holodeck version of Sherlock Holmes' nemesis. There is no word as to the return of other main cast members Wil Wheaton, Diana Muldaur, or Denise Crosby, but seeing as "Picard" is currently rolling hard with its nostalgia, there's every reason to believe one or all of them will also appear.
The characters, of course, are all older, wiser, and in different places in their lives. Most dramatically, as seen in previews, Dr. Crusher (McFadden) appears to have moved from medicine into vigilantism. She is seen wielding weapons,...

Actress Gates McFadden has said in interviews that she felt unsatisfied by her character's arc on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." For six of the show's seven seasons -- and for four feature films -- McFadden played the stalwart and morally upstanding Dr. Beverly Crusher, the chief medical officer on the U.S.S. Enterprise-d. She was the only parent at the start of the show, a first for the main cast of a "Star Trek" show. Eventually Worf (Michael Dorn) would have a son, and Data (Brent Spiner), Counselor Troi (Marina Sirtis), Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes), and Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) would be given children for single episodes, but Dr. Crusher was the only character to weather being a parent in dialogue on a regular basis.

“I’m retiring,” announces Delroy Lindo’s attorney Adrian Boseman at the beginning of the terrific Season 5 premiere of “The Good Fight.” The revelation shocks Adrian’s colleagues, but fans of the Paramount+ series knew that Lindo had planned to depart the show at the end of the fourth season, an exit that was delayed due to the pandemic production shutdown. In his final appearance, though, Lindo brings his beloved character closure by delivering one of his best performances on the series.

The next starship crew exploring the Final Frontier of Star Trek has arrived. No, it’s not guest stars for Picard Season 2, or a full break-down of the rest of the Strange New Worlds gang. Instead, after a decent amount of speculation, the full cast and character list for the upcoming animated series Star Trek: Prodigy has been revealed. And, it turns out there are some massive deep cuts to old school Star Trek canon, specifically, The Original Series.
Remember when Spock wore that red visor in the classic Star Trek episode “Is There In Truth No Beauty?” Well, one of the new alien crewmembers on Prodigy is a direct call-back to that alien species. Here’s the details of the new Prodigy crew and how it all connects to the larger Trek universe and timeline.

Gene Roddenberry left Star Trek’s third season to write a Tarzan film that never got produced, setting a tone for the next decade of his career. He produced the wretched Pretty Maids all in a Row and slunk back to television, first with the animated Trek and then a deal with Warner Bros that would see him produce the underrated Questor and Spectre along with a new science fiction film, seemingly designed to distance himself from the optimistic Sf albatross around his neck.
He cut a deal with CBS in 1972 to produce a 90-minute film, Genesis II designed to be a pilot for a potential series. He quickly reunited with many of the behind-the-scenes Trek team and got to work, creating a dystopia that began in 1979. When I was a wee one, we used to live right behind a valley that skirted our town. In the summer my friends and I would be out after dark running around the neighborhood, on one condition: we had to take tennis rackets with us. Why you ask? Well, because of the bats, you see; swooping around the street lights with the occasional dive towards an unsuspecting victim, we were forever on the lookout for the winged mammals. Now, we never had to try out our serves; but I’ve always been leery of the buggers (even at the movies) and the interesting sci-fi/horror hybrid Chosen Survivors (1974) does not change my opinion one little bit.

Thirty years ago, “Star Trek” proved it wasn’t just a story about Kirk and Spock; it was a story universe rich with possibilities, including a whole new cast of characters.
Ranking the men and women of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” is a far more brutal task than initially anticipated because, as the series kept telling us the whole time, this wasn’t a crew. This was a family. That said, let’s be honest. Family might inspire love on an equal playing field, but when it comes to actually spending time with people, favorites do emerge.
This is strictly limited to those who served as actual crew members (sorry, Q and Lwaxana Troi) because one of the best things about “Trek’s” approach to a military structure is how it still allows the show to celebrate individual personalities. Because as much fun as space travel is, a “Trek...

Although the genre that we associate him most with, the Western, was still in vogue, the trend among audience preferences had clearly shifted to urban crime dramas. Surprisingly, Wayne had never played a cop or detective - unless you want to count his role in the lamentable "Big Jim McLain", a 1952 Warner Brothers propaganda film that served as a love letter to Sen. Joseph McCarthy. In that turkey, Wayne played an investigator for Huac, the House UnAmerican Activities Committee that served as McCarthy's private police force, presumably searching out commie infiltrators. All they ended up doing was ruining the lives of left-wing people in the arts and academia. Wayne, for his part, remained unapologetic for his support of Huac even after McCarthy's popularity plummeted and he ended his career in shame and disgrace.

Charlton Heston fans will appreciate the fact that one of his few major films not to be released on home video has finally made it to DVD through MGM. "Number One" (released in certain countries under the title "Pro") is an off-beat vehicle for the superstar, who was then at his peak of popularity. The fact that the movie under-performed at the box-office and failed to score with critics didn't diminish Heston's status as a leading man. He would go on to star in such hits as "The Omega Man", "Skyjacked", "Soylent Green" "Earthquake", "Midway"and "Airport '75"- with cameos in the popular "The Three Musketeers" and "The Four Musketeers". The poor response to "Number One" doesn't diminish its many merits - and the fact that Heston was willing to play against type in a largely unsympathetic role. For the film, he reunited with director Tom Gries,...

I interviewed James Ellroy, the great American noir novelist, at La's venerable Pacific Dining Car in April 2001. We were there to discuss his latest book, The Cold Six Thousand, but wound up tackling a myriad of subjects over our three hour lunch. Ellroy sported a snappy fedora that I said would have looked great on Meyer Lansky. He barked a laugh and removed it, displaying his bald pate. When he looked at my full head of 33 year-old hair, his eyes narrowed: "That thing on your head real or a rug?" "Real," I replied. Ellroy exhaled for what seemed like a full minute, then murmured: "Cocksucker." We were off and running.
James Ellroy: Bark At The Moon
The "Demon Dog of American Fiction" sinks his teeth into Rfk, Mlk and Vietnam with The Cold Six Thousand

Star Trek: The Next Generation – Season Two
Stars: Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, Michael Dorn, Diana Muldaurn and Wil Wheaton | Created by Gene Roddenberry
When television shows are done right they are a ratings success and people look forward to the next episode of their favourite show to see the story progress. Sometimes though there is a spark that creates an obsession within fans and the show itself becomes a phenomenon and the actors playing fan favourite characters gain a rock star status, some even cult based on their small eccentricities that make them memorable. Star Trek is one of those shows that gained that status and still to this day is a huge merchandising success and film, only this week we’ve seen the trailer for the next film Star Trek into Darkness it’s a phenomenon that just keeps on growing.

Welcome to December and the official start of holiday shopping madness. Last week’s featured Blu-Ray, Men In Black 3, is still making a showing on the Blu-Ray sales charts. If the promise of Josh Brolin impersonating Tommy Lee Jones didn’t make you run out to buy it, then check out our Blu-Ray review of the film. Brave is still going strong too, and I predict it’ll have enough salespower to stay at the top of the charts until after the holidays.
This week, all Blu-Rays everywhere will cower as The Dark Knight Rises, Finding Nemo will change the way you look at your goldfish and Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s second season boldly goes on every nerd’s holiday wish list.

Season 2 of Star Trek The Next Generation had a troubled start. Thanks to the 1988 Writers Guild of America strike, the beginning of the season was delayed, the number of episodes were cut from 26 to 22 and the opening episode had to be adapted from an old Star Trek Phase II script from the 70′s. But with all the problems, it’s still regarded as an improvement over the first season.
Geordi Laforge has been promoted to chief engineer, the excellent Colm Meaney as Chief O’Brien is given a more prominent role, Whoopi Goldberg joined the cast as Guinan as well as the Ten Forward set making its debut and Diana Muldaur made her return to Star Trek (if only for this season) as the new Chief Medical Officer, Dr Katherine Pulaski. After almost a year, HBO’s Boardwalk Empire returns tonight, and viewers will finally learn the aftermath of season’s two cliffhanger.
[If you haven't caught up on last season, be warned: spoilers ahead.]
In the finale, Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) shot and killed Jimmy Darmondy (Michael Pitt) in retaliation of the latter’s betrayal. Jimmy was one of the main characters of the series and a favorite of many viewers, who were not thrilled about the twist.
“If you take things to their logical extreme with the situation we created, Jimmy has betrayed Nucky, he tried to have him killed. You want to be honest about the storytelling,” says Boardwalk Empire showrunner Terence Winter about the murder.
He adds, “In the pilot, Jimmy told Nucky: ‘You can’t be half a gangster anymore.’ We wanted with the first two seasons to follow that trajectory, where he goes full season from being the guy who doesn...

Say your husband's a big jerk. He yells at you and he's mean. But, on the other hand, he's rich and powerful and you're kind of superficial so you don't want to live without money or power. But still, he's a jerk and you hate him a lot.
Then imagine that one day you're out in the desert on some sort of mineral scouting trek with your meanie husband and a hot scruffy down-home cowboy type who is acting as your guide. (Also, I should mention that it's the 70s, so your idea of fashion is a polyester pantsuit and the hottie cowboy mineral speculator for sure has a mustache.) Your husband, in true form, drinks and is mean to you and the cowboy. This bugs you immensely. So when, due to his general jerk nature, your hubby spooks his horse, the horse throws him and he tumbles down a...
