In the official trailer for The Diplomat season two, Keri Russell’s ambassador, Kate Wyler, investigates who’s behind the explosion at the end of season one that left her husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) injured, as she is confronted with the consequences of her actions.
The preview for the Netflix drama, set to return on Oct. 31, picks up right where the series left off with a bombing in central London and Kate working with the British foreign secretary (David Gyasi) to figure out what happened.
Though a teaser trailer for the season revealed that Hal survived the blast, he’s shown in a hospital bed and visibly wounded as Kate asks him if he can hear her and he jokes, “No.”
The trailer then connects the explosion with the investigation into the attack on the British warship that started the series, as the British prime minister (Rory Kinnear) declares in...

Keri Russell vs. Allison Janney? Yes, please.
On Tuesday, Netflix dropped the trailer for Season 2 of “The Diplomat,” which offers a first look at Janney’s new character, Vice President Grace Penn. Season 2 of the Netflix political thriller picks up after the explosive (literally) Season 1 cliff-hanger when a car bomb detonated in the middle of London. The trailer reveals that Kate and her husband, Hal (Rufus Sewell), survived the blast — and the latter is, per Netflix, “very much involved” as Kate soon learns that the attack came from inside the British government.
Here is the official logline: “As Kate chases the truth, her only real ally is her almost-ex-husband Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), very much alive, and very much involved. She faces a fraught marriage, a complex dynamic with British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), and a threatening visit from Vice President Grace Penn (Janney).” Janney’s VP arrives...

The call is coming from inside the house in “The Diplomat” Season 2 — and Keri Russell’s U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler is calling out corruption as she sees it.
Picking up after the dramatic explosion that left both Kate’s husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) and MP Merritt Grove (Simon Chandler) in danger, the trailer for the second season sees Kate ensure Hal’s safety before acknowledging her suspicions about the British government.
“The call is coming from inside the house, and three Americans just got blown up inside the house,” Kate tells her team, pointing to Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear), who claims the explosion was a second Russian attack.
“The last time we surveilled one of these, it almost ended NATO,” Ali Ahn’s Eidra tells Kate, who responds, “Everything is pointing to him.”

International relations are getting a little thornier on “The Diplomat” this season…
The Season 2 trailer teases a visit from the Vice President (Allison Janney) just as U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) is contemplating a run for President. Of course, add in a domestic terrorist attack and Kate doesn’t know who to trust anymore.
The official synopsis for “The Diplomat” Season 2 reads: “A deadly explosion in the heart of London shatters U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler’s world (Russell). Struggling to rebuild the lives that broke and the team that split apart, Kate’s worst fears unfold: The attack that brought her to the U.K. didn’t come from a rival nation, it came from inside the British government. The first teaser for The Diplomat season two answers one of the questions from the first season’s cliffhanger finale.
Yes, Kate Wyler’s (Keri Russell) husband and fellow ambassador, Hal (Rufus Sewell), survives the near-fatal explosion at the end of season one.
The preview shows Kate and Hal attending a glitzy evening event, walking arm in arm, suggesting a future for the pair after the first season featured them alternately fighting and making up as Kate sought to divorce Hal.
Both the season two synopsis and an article on Netflix’s Tudum updated Thursday confirm Hal is “very much alive” and suggests he’ll be an “ally” as she further explores the extent to which the British prime minister is involved in the attack on the British warship that started the series.
Here’s the full synopsis from Netflix: “A deadly explosion in the heart of London shatters U.

The wordless Season 2 teaser trailer shows Kate and Hal arm in arm at some kind of fancy event, clearly them against the world now that Kate knows that the shocking terror attack came from inside the British government at the highest levels. Netflix has revealed first-look images alongside a premiere date of the 31st of October for season 2 of ‘The Diplomat.’
In the first season, Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) is a seasoned foreign service officer more at home in a crisis zone than an upper-crust atmosphere. She’s planning to take her next post in Afghanistan when the White House comes calling with a change of orders, sending her to London as the US ambassador to the United Kingdom. It’s not the behind-the-scenes world she thrives in, but with war brewing on one continent and boiling over on another, her skills will still be called upon. Kate will have to defuse international crises, forge strategic alliances in London and adjust to her new place in the spotlight — all while trying to survive her marriage to fellow career diplomat and charismatic political star Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell).

Keri Russell will return as “The Diplomat” on Halloween. The Netflix drama series will debut all episodes of its second season on Oct. 31, the streamer revealed Thursday morning.
Season 2 of the series will pick up with Russell’s foreign correspondent Kate Wyler still navigating the life of a U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom and the threat of brewing warfare abroad.
The series launched in April 2023 and became an instant success for Netflix, debuting at the top of the streamer’s weekly global top 10 English TV list. It was renewed for a second season within two weeks of its premiere. Russell scored nominations at the Emmys and Golden Globes for her lead performance. The program itself landed a nod for best television series — drama at the Globes.
In January, Variety exclusively reported that Oscar-winner Allison Janney would join the series for Season 2, guest starring as Vice President Grace Penn.

The Diplomat is returning to Netflix just in time for the upcoming presidential election.
The streamer announced Thursday that Season 2 will debut on October 31. Along with the premiere date, two first look photos of star Keri Russell were also released.
Neither of the photos give much intel as to what will go down in Season 2, though they both give off a fairly somber tone. Without giving away any spoilers for Season 1, this would make sense given where the audiences leave Russell’s Kate Wyler in the explosive finale.
See one of the photos above. The other is below.

David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.

With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

The nominees for the 2024 Writers Guild of America Awards are finally here.
The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and Writers Guild of America East (Wgae) have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in screenwriting, television, new media, news, radio/audio, and promotional writing for 2023.
Oscar-nominated screenplays for “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “May December,” “Past Lives,” “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Oppenheimer” were expected WGA nominations. However, surprise nods for “Air,” “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” and “Nyad” prove the WGA Awards still have a few tricks up their sleeve. If you’re wondering, “Poor Things” was not eligible because it wasn’t produced under a WGA contract, per a source close to the project.
Despite now taking place one month after the Academy Awards, the WGA nominations still carry weight this season — and could be a deciding factor for final Oscar voting. As IndieWire’s Anne Thompson predicted,...

Plot: Kate Wyler is the new US Ambassador to the United Kingdom. She was supposed to go to Afghanistan. She’s great in a crisis zone. In a historic home… less so. War is brewing on one continent and boiling over on another. Kate will have to diffuse international crises, forge strategic alliances in London, and adjust to her new place in the spotlight — all while trying to survive her marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal Wyler.
Review: Political series come in two distinct flavors. One is heavily action-oriented, with thrills rooted in espionage and chase sequences like The Night Agent. The other is the intricate palace intrigue housed within the halls of political machinations like House of Cards. Now and then, a third version comes into play that is not reliant on menace or action but manages to be engaging and aspirational, like in NBC’s acclaimed The West Wing.

First ABC and now Netflix, Kiefer Sutherland's Designated Survivor is done after three seasons.
For the second time, Designated Survivor has been canceled. Netflix confirmed the series will not return for its fourth season. The streamer saved the show after it was canceled by ABC in 2018 following its second season.
The Kiefer Sutherland starrer was notable for its plagued production. The series had five showrunners over two seasons and Sutherland’s co-star, Nathasha McElhorne, left the show during season 2 to pursue another project. After ABC canceled the show, it was months before Netflix decided to pick up a third season, as well as purchase the streaming rights to seasons one and two for the U.S. and Canada.

Netflix will not be picking up new seasons of D.C. drama series Designated Survivor starring Kiefer Sutherland, or freshman adult animated comedy series Tuca & Bertie, headlined by Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong.
Netflix rescued Designated Survivor, picking it up for a third season last September after its cancellation by ABC following months of complex dealmaking. At the time, the streaming service and studio eOne made one-year deals with the cast for a third season only. Some of the actors have already moved on — for instance Kal Penn is toplining a new comedy series on NBC — but they were open to doing more Designated Survivor. The three produced seasons will continue to be available on Netflix globally.

President Kirkman “really screwed” up his State of the Union address to the nation — but that doesn’t mean he’s ready to throw in the towel on his first presidential campaign. Just yet, anyway.
In the 2-minute trailer for Season 3 of Netflix’s “Designated Survivor,” Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland) has to face a political reality he’s never come across before: campaigning.

President Tom Kirkman is setting up his new office at Netflix, as Kiefer Sutherland’s “Designated Survivor” has finally received a Season 3 premiere date from the streaming service.
The former ABC drama will debut its 10-episode third season June 7 on Netflix, Sutherland said in a video tweeted Wednesday. In that same two-minute clip, the series’ lead took it upon himself to recap the political drama’s first two seasons for users who haven’t been following along with Kirkman’s journey.
Watch the date announcement below.
“Designated Survivor” was revived for a third season by Netflix last September, with its fifth different showrunner in “ER” and “Law & Order” vet Neal Baer. The streaming service had been in talks with eOne, which produces the show, since it was canceled by ABC back in May. The political thriller was one of many broadcast TV shows to get the ax last spring during the pre-upfronts bloodbath.

The line of succession has held. Netflix today set a June 7 premiere date for Season 3 of Designated Survivor, the D.C. drama starring Kiefer Sutherland that the streaming service picked up in September after ABC had canceled it.

After being resurrected from its cancellation at ABC, Designated Survivor has officially packed its briefcase and is moving seasons 1 and 2 to Netflix from its home at Hulu. The move comes after it was announced the political drama would get a third season at the streaming giant.

Netflix has picked up another canceled TV show, this time reviving “Designated Survivor” for a third season.
The drama, which stars Kiefer Sutherland, will return for a 10-episode third season with its fifth different showrunner in “ER” and “Law & Order” vet Neal Baer.
Netflix had been talks with eOne, which produces the show, since it was canceled by ABC back in May. The political thriller was one of many broadcast TV shows to get the ax this spring during the pre-upfronts bloodbath.

After very lengthy negotiations, Entertainment One has closed a deal with Netflix for a 10-episode Season 3 order to Designated Survivor, which will become a global Netflix original.
The Kiefer Sutherland-starring series will have a new showrunner, Law & Order: Svu alum Neal Baer, who had been tapped for the job last spring before ABC made the decision in May not to renew the political thriller. He is the series’ fifth showrunner. He and Sutherland are said to have hit it off and had been discussing the Season 3 creative direction while talks with Netflix were going on, with excitement among the show’s producers about what a premium version of the broadcast drama may look like.
The core cast of the series, including Sutherland, Kal Penn, Adan Canto and Italia Ricci, are set to return, with Maggie Q in talks to join them. Production on Season 3 is set to begin later this year for a 2019 premiere.

“Designated Survivor” is officially moving from ABC to Netflix for its third season, Variety has learned.
The political drama starring Kiefer Sutherland was cancelled by ABC back in May, but rumors began to swirl almost immediately that series producer eOne were looking to continue the show with the streaming giant. Neal Baer will join the series as showrunner for the third season, which will consist of 10 episodes. Baer will now be the fifth showrunner on “Designated Survivor” since it began.
In the new season, President Kirkman (Sutherland) will face a political reality–campaigning. What does it take to make a leader? What price will he be willing to pay? This season will explore today’s world of campaigning, smear tactics, debates, campaign finance and “fake news.”
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play President Kirkman for season 3 of ‘Designated Survivor’ with Netflix, eOne and Neal Baer,” Sutherland said.

Not even two months after ordering it to pilot, Spike TV has handed out a ten-episode, straight-to-series pickup for the TV drama series adaptation of Stephen King's 1980 novella "The Mist".
The network was reportedly so impressed with the series pitch and script that they opted to go straight to series rather than proceed with a typical pilot. Filming begins this Summer ahead of a 2017 debut.
The decision to fast-track the series comes a month after Spike paused development on its scripted drama series adaptation of Kim Stanley Robinson's "Mars" book trilogy following showrunner Peter Noah's departure.
That project was picked up straight to series in December, a month after the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced drama "Harvest" was scrapped after its straight-to-series order. Should it make it to air, "The Mist" would become the network's first scripted drama series in nine years.

Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids, and its apparently difficult to develop as a TV series, too. Spike TV has suspended production of the Red Mars TV series, based on writer Kim Stanley Robinson’s sci-fi trilogy. Executive producer and showrunner Peter Noah has quit the series. Reportedly, Red Mars has not been cancelled. Spike ordered the project direct-to-series, back in December.
Per Deadline, a Spike TV spokes-person said, "We will continue to develop Red Mars with Skydance. The Red Mars trilogy is one of the most beloved, modern science fiction properties, in part because of its tremendous scope and ambition. We are pausing to ensure we get the script right and to deliver fans what they want — a fantastic show that fully captures the spirit of these wonderful books."
