- Tall, beefy American character actor, who mainly appeared in westerns. Began as a junior radio announcer for WBZ in Boston in 1926. Promoted to head announcer for numerous NBC network shows in 1930. In films from 1947.
- The "Boston Herald" reported his retirement plans in its 9/8/61 issue. "Walpole [NH] is famous for its scenic setting. High on a hilltop with a magnificent panorama is Autumn Hill Gift Shop. Here on a 100-acre farm, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Petrie and their 23-year-old son, Eric, have established an unusual and distinctive gift shop. A huge old dairy barn has been transformed into a shop with five departments: Country Store, Back Parlor, Country Collection, Garden Room, and Country Kitchen".
- In 1960 it was reported by a national news service that he deplores his West Coast residence. The reason given is that his wife and son are living on the Petrie farm in New Hampshire, where his son follows a cabinet-making career and his wife runs a successful gift shop. "This makes me a coast-to-coast commuter," he said.
- Nationally known for doing the pre-show warm-up on the Jimmy Durante-Garry Moore show.
