A member of the Writer's Guild of America, West, Paul Root is an active writer of screenplays, fiction, and stage work. His skill received notice when as a graduate student, the heralded writer Nikki Giovanni, once identified as one of Oprah Winfrey's 25 Living Legends, selected his story White Rats as Story of the Year for the International English Honor Society's Magazine, The Rectangle.
A feature film Root co-wrote, The Mystery of Her, was released in March 2022. A coming-of-age story about a young woman who lost her memory in an accident, the movie was released on Netflix in Latin America and was so well received that it broke into the Netflix Top 10 most streamed movies in the world in early July 2022.
His scripts have been recognized by some of the country's most prestigious competitions, including The Francis Ford Coppola New Century Writing Awards, NYU's Tisch School, The Nicholls Fellowship Competition and the Austin Film Festival. He has numerous books of fiction, including Moving Pictures (2009), a children's illustrated book S.O.S.: Save Old Santa (2010), and Saul's Sacred Quest (2016).
His films have been included the Gothenburg Film Festival (Europe's longest running festival), the UCLA Melnitz Series, the Rochester International Film Festival and others. He co-wrote and helped produce the feature film Cherry Crush with Nicholas DiBella, as well as the motion pictures King's Faith and The Mystery of Her.
Cherry Crush, starring Jonathan Tucker and Nikki Reed, peaked at #23 of top-rented DVDs in the year of its release, staying in the top 50 rentals for the summer season. King's Faith was released theatrically in 36 US markets; it premiered on UPTV with subsequent airings on TV One; it made its Netflix premiere in Dec. 2016. It has more than 4.5 million broadcast views, 150,000+ worldwide DVD sales, and over 1.5 million streams and downloads to date.
