Ava DuVernay announced on Twitter today that Batman writer Tom King is coming aboard to write The New Gods with her, the DC film project she has set up at Warner Bros.
Deadline reported last year that DuVernay is attached to direct a big screen adaptation of the Jack Kirby comic.
The New Gods was the Genesis of the uber-villain Darkseid. Also called “Fourth World,” the story unfolded in a trilogy of related comics written and drawn by Kirby that were published in the very early 1970s: New Gods, Forever People and Mister Miracle. The New Gods came into existence after the world of the gods of classic mythology were destroyed during Ragnarok. The deities inhabit two planets: one is New Genesis, a lush paradise, and the other Apokolips, which sounds like Dante’s version of hell. War ensues. There is a rich universe of extraordinary characters for DuVernay to play with here.

Exclusive: It was a female director who gave the industry and Warner Bros the highest overall summer film last year with $412.5 million at the domestic box office and provided the studio the wind to sail past Disney as the first to win the $2 billion domestic box office race. Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman made the industry sit up and take notice when the Superhero origin film opened to $103.2M domestically and $228M internationally. It was one of only three films last year the studio released from female directors. The others were Denise Di Novi’s Unforgettable and Stella Meghie’s Everything, Everything (an MGM co-production). New Line had zero, but these numbers are changing, and for the better.

Exclusive: James Mangold is negotiating to direct The Deep Blue Good-By, the 1964 John D. MacDonald novel that kicked off series of mystery novels with character Travis McGee. This has long been eyed by Fox as the launch of a star-driven franchise based on the beach bum McGee, a forerunner of muscular solitary heroes like Jack Reacher and Spenser For Hire, helping (and romancing) damsels in distress as he kicks ass against the powerful. The film was originally set as a star vehicle for Leonardo DiCaprio. That’s not going to happen now, as DiCaprio has plenty of work in front of him and this film, with a most recent script draft by Mystic River novelist Dennis Lehane, is certainly ready to go. DiCaprio and his Appian Way partner Jennifer Davisson-Killoran are producing with Amy Robinson and Chernin Entertainment. Previous script drafts were done by Dana Stevens and Kario Salem. Mangold,...

He's been in negotiations to direct the untitled Martin Luther King Jr. biopic at Dreamworks for a few months now, the one set to star his "Any Given Sunday" star Jamie Foxx as the famed civil rights leader.
Today, Stone took to Twitter to confirm he's no longer involved in the project due to creative differences with the producers. From the sounds of it Stone wanted to make a warts-and-all style biopic, whereas the producers want something which paints a more flattering picture. Here's Stone's tweets on the subject:
"Sad news. My Mlk project involvement has ended. I did an extensive rewrite of the script, but the producers won't go with it.
The script dealt with issues of adultery, conflicts within the movement, and King's spiritual transformation into a higher, more radical being
I'm told the estate and the 'respectable' black community that guard King's reputation won't approve it. They...

The Kario Salem script has bee floating around for some time now and its looking like the Martin Luther King biopic is getting some traction. Jamie Foxx is in talks to play the great man himself and Oliver Stone will be firmly planted in the directors chair. Steven Spielberg will lend his name as producer for Dreamworks, who pick up the rights t the story in 2009, and interestingly enough the rights to the famous “I Have A Dream” speech as well. The movie certainly seems to be in good hands with Stone and Salem. Both are award winners (Salem picked up an Emmy in 1997 as a writer on Don King: Only in America) and Stone has certainly proved his worth with other political movies such as JFK, Nixon and of course W.

As far as bio-pics go, you can’t get more legit than Jamie Foxx. But -also – as far as biopics go, Oliver Stone is a variable quantity. Not that JFK is strictly a biopic, but W. wasn’t really either, even though one featured courtroom conspiracies while the other just made me feel bad for the then-President of the United States.

The life and abrupt death of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. is a subject that has inspired filmmakers to try to craft the perfect biopic for years. Directors such as Paul Greengrass and The Butler’s Lee Daniels have been stuck in development hell on their planned projects, and now here comes Oliver Stone, who has his Any Given Sunday star Jamie Foxx ready to take the lead.According to The Wrap, Foxx is in talks for the role, with Stone in negotiations with DreamWorks and Warner Bros. to direct Kario Salem’s draft of a script originally written by Ronald Harwood. DreamWorks nabbed the rights to King’s story in 2009, which crucially included the permission to use his famous “Dream” speech, as protected by copyright.Salem has spent years conducting interviews and doing research for the film, and it would appear that the King family will support...

With "JFK," "Nixon" and "W." under his belt, Oliver Stone knows his way around (controversial) biopics of famous American leaders. But even with that said, he's not the first guy we'd think of for a movie about Martin Luther King Jr. Then again, we're not the folks at DreamWorks, who are eyeing Stone to direct, and Jamie Foxx to star in a currently untitled project they're developing. The weight behind this one is immense, with Steven Spielberg leading the producers that also include Suzanne De Passe, Madison Jones and Sam Nappi, and Ronald Harwood ("The Pianist," "Australia") first cracking the script while Kario Salem ("Chasing Mavericks") is working on it now. But perhaps most crucially, the project has members of the Mlk family involved as well. Now for the caveats: THR says, "neither Stone nor Foxx have offers at this stage but meetings have taken place. The two are keen...

Chasing Mavericks chronicles the heroic efforts of a teenage surfer to prepare himself for challenging the "mythic" wave known as Mavericks, and the father-son bond with his mentor that develops. Poignant and inspirational, it is a solid family film that tugs the heartstrings. Written by Kario Salem and directed by Curtis Hanson (8 Mile, La Confidential), the movie is is based on the true-life story of Jay Moriarty, who became world famous when his attempt to surf Mavericks landed him on the cover of Surfer magazine.

We caught a great first trailer and poster last week for the upcoming surfing movie, Chasing Mavericks, starring Gerard Butler and newcomer Jonny Weston, telling the true story of surfing legend Jay Moriarty.
And now a second version of the trailer has already made its way online, debuting over at IMDb, and it continues to look promising. It’s not at all often we get to see a surfing movie on the big screen, so I’m always on board (no pun intended) when they come.
“Chasing Mavericks is the inspirational true story of real life surfing phenom Jay Moriarity (newcomer Jonny Weston). When 15-year-old Jay discovers that the mythic Mavericks surf break, one of the biggest waves on Earth, is not only real, but exists just miles from his Santa Cruz home, he enlists the help of local legend Frosty Hesson (Gerard Butler) to train him to survive it.

It’s not often we get to see a surfing movie on the big screen, so when the opportunity does arrive, I’m all for it. Especially when that surfing movie has Gerard Butler as one of the leads.
Chasing Mavericks sees Butler star opposite newcomer Jonny Weston, telling the true story of Jay Moriarty (Weston) and his path to becoming the legendary surfer he was until his early death in 2001 at the age of just 22, with Butler playing his mentor.
The first trailer and poster have now made their way online, giving a great first tease of the impressive footage we can look forward to. It feels a little like a live-action version of Surf’s Up in places, but I love Surf’s Up, so that’s a good thing in my books.

Aussie actor Chris Hemsworth was a relative unknown Stateside only a couple years ago, but he has become the go-to guy for roles requiring a handsome badass who fights inhuman threats. Hemsworth has battled Frost Giants in Thor and alien invaders in The Avengers as Thor — and Thor's wicked brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), in both movies — and trolls as the Huntsman in Snow White and the Huntsman, and it looks like he will soon be battling robots for director Steven Spielberg in Robopocalypse.
The three-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker has been trying to put together an adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson's best-selling novel of the same name since before the book was completed, and now it seems he's finally ready to start moving forward with it. Chris Hemsworth is on the verge of supernova star status in Hollywood. Steven Spielberg reportedly wants Hemsworth, he of Thor, Avengers, Cabin In The Woods, Snow White And The Huntsman and the upcoming Thor 2, to play the lead in his upcoming sci-fi blockbuster Robopocalypse, according to Deadline.
The film is about a robot uprising and is based on a Daniel H. Wilson bestselling novel, with a script by Drew Goddard and revisions by Kario Salem. If Hemsworth lands this, and he’d be silly not to say yes, the Aussie has a chance to have his hand in four franchises (if you count Thor and Avengers separately). Hemsworth would be the first set of casting news for the project, which already has an April 25th, 2014 release date, which seems needless. Either way, I love Hemsworth, so I’m a fan. It beats Sam Worthington.

Exclusive: This is one of the most coveted roles in Hollywood. And now, after critic- and fan-lauded star turns in Thor, The Avengers, and Snow White And The Huntsman, Chris Hemsworth will be working with Steven Spielberg. I’ve learned that, amid much secrecy (including assumed names), Spielberg met and now wants Hemsworth in his next helming effort Robopocalypse, the big technothriller which is sure to become the director’s next big global popcorn film. The Disney-Fox-DreamWorks’ actioner is releasing worldwide on April 25, 2014. (That’s the same weekend that Marvel’s The Avengers was released internationally this year. Disney distributes Robopocalypse domestically, Fox overseas.) Related: Steven Spielberg Commits To Next Direct ‘Robopocalypse’ The script based on the Daniel H. Wilson epic novel about the human race’s attempt to survive an apocalyptic robot uprising was most recently adapted by hot screenwriter Kario Salem, who has been rewriting Drew Goddard. [1] Joel Schumacher has confirmed in an interview that Halle Berry is in talks to take the lead in the tentatively titled The Hive, about "a female emergency line operator who, in trying to help a young girl, comes up against a killer from her own past." While nothing is official at this point, the director said, he and Berry are both interested in working together and the producers of The Hive seem to be on board with hiring her. The thriller is expected to begin shooting in February, though Schumacher has said that he may shoot another, smaller film before that. Berry will next appear in Garry Marshall's limp-looking ensemble romcom New Year's Eve, and is currently shooting Cloud Atlas with directors Tom Tykwer, Andy Wachowski, and Lana Wachowski. [Coming Soon [2]] After the jump, surfing biopic Mavericks gets a new title and two new stars, and 50 Cent lines up yet another acting gig.

Elisabeth Shue and Abigail Spencer have joined the cast of Curtis Hanson's surfing drama "Of Men and Mavericks" at Fox 2000 says The Hollywood Reporter.
The story follows Jay Moriarty (Jonny Weston), a Santa Cruz native who found his calling in the world of surfing at a young age and flourished under the guidance of local elder Rick “Frosty” Hesson (Gerard Butler). Spencer will play the role of Frosty’s wife, while Shue will play Moriarty’s mother. Leven Rambin also stars while Kario Salem and Brandon Hooper penned the script.

[1] Michael K. Williams may have missed out on the lead role of Django Unchained, but it seems there may still be room for him to appear in a different capacity. In an interview with Shadow & Act [2] (via The Playlist [3]), the The Wire actor confirmed that he had just barely lost the lead role to Jamie Foxx, but that director Quentin Tarantino (or "Qt, as I call him") liked Williams enough to consider creating a new role just for him. "It's not official yet but there's a lot of talk that there may be a role coming back 'round my way,'" he told the site. "His people and my people have been in discussions in regards to a role that he is creating for me." The Playlist points out that the only major black role still uncast is that of Bartholemew, but that the hulking, silent bodyguard probably wouldn't be an ideal fit for Williams.

Despite being almost insurmountably stupid, Prison Break at least left me with a good impression when it comes to Robert Knepper, an actor that can play characters with great skill and complexity. R.I.P.D. may have just helped itself out, with THR learning that he’s joined the cast as “one of the spirits,” or a “deado.”

Leven Rambin is set to take on the female lead in Mavericks. Variety reports that Rambin will star opposite Gerard Butler and Jonny Weston in the upcoming biopic.
Butler plays "Rick "Frosty" Hesson, the mentor who trained the late surf phenomenon Jay Moriarty (Weston), in the Walden Media drama. The film will be directed by Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential, 8 Mile) based on a script from Kario Salem and Brandon Hooper.
Rambin has starred in a number of small screen roles, including All My Children, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Grey's Anatomy. She will be making the jump to the big screen to star in Gary Ross' adaptation of The Hunger Games in the role of Glimmer.
I am not familiar with her, but everyone soon will be after Hunger Games. This sounds like a high profile role for Rambin. What are your thoughts?
