“I love those stories that whatever you think is happening — it’s not that,” says Betsy Brandt. And this psychological thriller fits the bill: “It’s a fantastic story, and it’s not what it looks like.” If you’re familiar with last year’s true crime blockbuster The Curious Case of Natalia Grace and its 2024 follow-up, Natalia Speaks, you’ll recognize the bones of the jaw-dropping tale that is The Bad Orphan, premiering Saturday, June 22 at 8/7c on Lifetime. In the new film, Karl and Jessica (Brandt) — already parents of a daughter named Rhiannon — spend years trying to expand their family. They ultimately adopt an 8-year-old orphan who might be more troubled than they first thought. “They’re like, this is what we need. We don’t feel like our family’s complete,” says the Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul actress, who’s also an executive producer. “They...

The thrilling work of the Top Gun: Maverick sound team, which placed audiences into Naval aircrafts amid high-flying action, won the Oscar for best sound on Sunday, delivering Academy Awards to the team of Mark Weingarten, James H. Mather, Al Nelson, Chris Burdon and Mark Taylor. Despite the happy moment for the team, others who worked on sound for Maverick did not have a triumphant moment at the Dolby Theatre, as they were not on the ballot.
In January, The Hollywood Reporter broke the story that the Academy’s sound executive branch found itself in a contentious situation when vetting the names that would appear on the Maverick ballot. Sources say this stemmed from the fact that there were two teams that worked on the movie at different times. One was a team at Skywalker Sound in northern California and the other from Twickenham Film Studios and Soundbyte Studios in London.

Vanity Fair’s annual Oscar party took place Sunday at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills. I have all the details from inside the event, which as usual attracted the most elite of the Hollywood set who poured in after watching Everything Everywhere All at Once score seven Oscar trophies including Best Picture.
We managed to get our hands on the guest list for the event, held in a 3,000-square-foot indoor reception area, with additional courtyards and other outdoor lounge spaces. The main bar, a prime gathering spot, was 40 feet long. The guests danced into the early-morning hours.

As Gold Derby predicted, “Top Gun: Maverick” won the Best Sound Oscar on March 12 over co-nominees “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman” and “Elvis.” This victory was 36 years in the making, as the original “Top Gun” (1986) was nominated in both sound races at the 1987 Oscars and lost to “Aliens” (Best Sound Effects Editing) and “Platoon” (Best Sound). Note that the two sound categories were combined into a single one beginning with the 2021 ceremony.
Accepting the Oscars win for “Top Gun: Maverick” were Mark Weingarten, James H. Mather, Al Nelson, Chris Burdon and Mark Taylor. Prior to tonight, only Weingarten and Taylor already had trophies on their mantels, for “Dunkirk” and “1917”, respectively.

Ahead of the 2021 Oscars, the academy combined their Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories into one. The films vying for the third annual Best Sound prize are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman,” “Elvis,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Our current odds indicate that “Top Gun: Maverick” (16/5) will be victorious, followed in order of likelihood by “All Quiet on the Western Front” (19/5), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (9/2), “Elvis” (9/2), and “The Batman” (9/2).
The 23 craftspeople included in the current lineup have collectively amassed a whopping 72 previous nominations and 16 wins for their sound work. The one responsible for the largest chunk is Andy Nelson, whose dual bids for “The Batman” and “Elvis” bring him to a record-fortifying career total of 24. After a dozen-year development period that was exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, the first sequel to 1986’s “Top Gun” — “Top Gun: Maverick” — finally saw the light of day last summer and proved to be an even bigger hit than its predecessor. Its box office total of just under $1.5 billion makes it the 12th highest-grossing film of all time, and it is now aiming to land behind 1997’s “Titanic” as the second most financially successful Best Picture Oscar winner ever. Since its general audience popularity has actually manifested in the form of prestigious awards recognition, it stands a strong chance of clearing the final hurdle.
Both “Top Gun: Maverick” and its Best Picture competitor, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” have made history this year as the first pair of sequels ever nominated against each other in the category. As one of only nine continuation films to ever contend for this award,...

“Top Gun: Maverick” won the live-action feature film award at the Cinema Audio Society’s Cas Awards, which took place in Los Angeles on Saturday evening.
It won in a category whose nominees were identical to the lineup in the Oscars’ Best Sound category: “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman,” “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” During the time when the Oscars gave out separate sound awards for mixing and editing, the Cas winner went on to take the Oscar for sound mixing a little less than half the time – but in the first two years after the Academy combined its two categories into one, the guild and Oscar winners have matched both times.
Other feature-film winners included “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” for animation and “Moonage Daydream” for documentary.
Television winners included “Better Call Saul,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” and “Only Murders in the Building.

New Delhi, March 4 (Ians) Former Australia captain Mark Taylor has slammed the pitches rolled out for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, adding that the surface in Indore was the worst of them all.
Taylor’s comments come after the International Cricket Council (Icc), post a report submitted by match referee Chris Broad, rated the pitch in Indore used for the third Test, where Australia won by nine wickets, as “poor” under its Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process and also gave Holkar Stadium three demerit points.
“I agree with that (poor rating for Indore pitch). I definitely think the pitches have been poor for the series, to be totally honest, and obviously the Indore one was the worst of the three.”
“I don’t believe a pitch should be going through the top on day one. You might understand that day four or five if the game goes that long, but not day one,...

New Delhi, March 3 (Ians) Former Australia captain Mark Taylor was in praise of batter Travis Head for spearheading the charge for the visitors’ nine-wicket victory over India in the third Test at Indore, pointing out that the left-hander put pressure on the bowler which worked very well.
Opening for Australia in absence of an injured David Warner, Head came into his own in the second innings chase of 76 on day three’s play with an unbeaten 49 to give the visitors a memorable victory in 18.5 overs.
“Australia had to be a little bit proactive, but as we saw in the second Test when they decided to reverse sweep and sweep everything, being proactive doesn’t mean being rash. It needed someone to push the button and say ‘I’ve got to put the pressure back on the bowler’.”
“That was the moment Travis Head thought, well I’m going to go now,...

New Delhi, Feb 26 (Ians) Former Australia captain Mark Taylor has urged the selectors ‘to make a decision’ on David Warner’s future as a Test opener. Warner, 36, flew home this week from India after suffering from a concussion and elbow fracture during the first innings of the second Test in New Delhi.
In the first two matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, Warner had returned scores of one, 10, and 15 in the first two Test matches, and was unable to give Australia the start they needed. Moreover, the low scores mean his Test average in India has dropped to 21.78 from 10 matches.
Australia’s next Test tour will be to England for the Ashes apart from a potential World Test Championship (Wtc) final, where Warner averages only 26.04. He will be haunted by an unimpressive Ashes in 2019, where he averaged only 9.5.

New Delhi, Feb 22 (Ians) With spin all-rounder Ashton Agar being sent home from the Test tour of India, former Australia captain Mark Taylor? is left confused over how the left-armer bowler’s future in Test cricket would look like.
Agar, who played in the Sydney Test against South Africa alongside off-spinner Nathan Lyon last month, has now gone from being Australia’s second-preferred spin option to now not being in the Test scheme of things, especially with Todd Murphy and Matthew Kuhnemann given Test debuts in Nagpur and New Delhi respectively.
“I don’t know what his future is as a Test player. They picked him for the Sydney Test, which I thought was a good selection because they were thinking about the series in India. But then they didn’t pick him in India. So I don’t see what sort of future he has left,” Taylor was quoted...

All Quiet on the Western Front made good on its record number of BAFTA nominations with a major haul of wins at the film awards ceremony on Sunday night.
At London’s Royal Festival Hall, Netflix’s German anti-war epic took the BAFTAs for best film, alongside best adapted screenplay and best director, and hoovered up most of the craft honors for a total of seven gongs (a BAFTA record for a film not in the English language).
Away from the Western Front, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin won four awards, including half the performance honors, with Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan landing supporting wins. Elsewhere, Austin Butler won leading actor for Elvis, and Cate Blanchett leading actress for Tar.

The key to the “Top Gun: Maverick” sound design — and why it’s the favorite to win the Best Sound Oscar — is its effective creation of the “synaptic” experience, which carried over from Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible” films. It’s a hyper-real soundscape that guides the audience’s attention to important elements with dynamics rather than pummeling them with a wall of sound.
In the “Top Gun” sequel, the synaptic sound of being inside the jet fighter cockpits with Cruise’s Maverick emphasized breathing and the manipulation of the joystick, while strategically layering in the jet noises. These included the sound of air whooshing over the wings and the sonic reflection of the aerobatics. This was definitely a contributing factor to the film’s global success in bringing audiences back to theaters.

The motion picture academy made it a little easier in 2021 to predict the winners by combining Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing into one category: Best Sound. Both sound mixers and sound editors are recognized in the combined category. Up to six statuettes will be awarded to one production sound mixer, two supervising sound editors and three re-recording mixers. The inaugural winner of Best Sound was, appropriately enough “Sound of Metal.” Last year, this prize went to “Dune.”
The sound branch determines the nominees in two stages. First, members of the branch cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters, announced on December 21, moving on to the second stage. Members who attend screenings of excerpts from these 10 semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated.
It can be difficult to differentiate the sound mixing of a film from the sound editing.

Top: Gun Maverick is approaching a different kind of danger zone. With nomination voting underway, Maverick still doesn’t have its potential sound nominees locked up, in what has become a contentious process, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
As of Thursday afternoon, members of the Academy’s sound executive branch, which annually holds a meeting in December to vet the names submitted as contenders, was still investigating which names should appear on the ballot for Maverick, should the movie make the final five.
Sources say the impasse stems from the fact that there were two teams that worked on the movie at different times. One was a team at Skywalker Sound in northern California and the other is a team that worked at De Lane Lea in London. THR could not get clarity on specifics of the impasse at press time. But this does offer a glimpse into what...

When “Top Gun: Maverick” landed in theaters this summer, audiences around the world enjoyed the excitement of soaring through the sky alongside the Navy’s best of the best. One key to creating that sensation was building the perfect soundscape.
Director Joseph Kosinski describes the challenge, saying, “‘Top Gun’ was the test disc for everyone’s home entertainment system.” Adding to a monumental task were the restrictions brought on by the pandemic, as well as months of military negotiations, Navy contracts and detailed planning to bring the story of Maverick (Tom Cruise) back to the big screen.
Early on, supervising sound editor Al Nelson and sound effects editor Ben Burtt spent a week in the Atlantic aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. Nelson recalls, “The idea was, ‘Let’s just get as much great raw material as we can.’” They collected a variety of sounds that included takeoffs and landings, radios,...

Melbourne, Nov 5 (Ians) Cricket Australia (CA) selectors might have to take some tough calls in the wake of the defending champions’ unimpressive performance in the Icc T20 World Cup at home, with former skipper Mark Taylor advocating for more youngsters to be blooded into the side.
Australia’s semifinal qualification hopes hinge on the England vs Sri Lanka match currently underway at the Sydney Cricket Ground and Jos Buttler’s team’s loss can only bring joy to the Australians.
But, given the way they have played in the tournament, losing the Super 12 opener to New Zealand by 89 runs, would have given the selectors food for thought. With the next T20 World Cup, to be hosted jointly in the Caribbean and the United States, the selectors have their task cut out and Taylor said one of the steps could be to bring in youngsters, as T20 cricket is not a game of 37 year olds.

With summer hits “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount), “Nope” (Universal), and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (A24) being given Oscar pushes for Best Picture, it will definitely impact the craft races as well. So while we await the coming of the two fall behemoths — “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Marvel/Disney) and “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2oth Century/Disney) — let’s assess where the summer trio of blockbusters have the best craft opportunities.

In the same week that Quentin Tarantino called “Peppa Pig” “the greatest British import of this decade,” executives at the Children’s Media Conference in Sheffield discussed how despite challenges such as Brexit, the U.K. remains a leader in animated and pre-school content.

No matter how much you may love and admire Steven Spielberg and James Wan for their original works, you have to raise an eyebrow on their decision to remake 90’s horror-comedy Arachnophobia.
The remake is in its very early stages at this point with only Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and Wan’s Atomic Monster and the film’s original director, Frank Marshall as an executive producer attached. It is not thought that Wan will direct.
Marshall made his directorial debut on Arachnophobia in 1990. The original film starred Jeff Daniels and John Goodman and focused on a newly discovered Venezuelan spider being transported to a small American town, and producing a new species of deadly spiders, which begin killing the town’s residents. The film made approximately $53 million at the box office.
