Tom Stoppard and the late Terrence McNally have won the most Tonys for a playwright taking home four each. The 85-year-old Stoppard is a strong contender to pick up his fifth Tony for his latest (and perhaps final) play “Leopoldstadt.” The acclaimed drama revolves around a wealthy Jewish family who had fled the programs in Eastern Europe and settled in Vienna. In an interview, Stoppard noted that the play “took a year to write but the gestation was much longer. Quite a lot of it is personal to me but I made it a Viennese family so that it wouldn’t seem to be about me. “ Stoppard, who was born in Czechoslovakia in 1937, lost all four of his grandparents in the Holocaust.

"Kill him and get the girl!" Saban Films has released an official trailer for an action thriller titled Last Man Down, the second feature made by Swedish filmmaker Fansu Njie. It opens direct-to-vod starting in October, and this really does look like direct-to-video quality. Daniel Stisen stars as John Wood, who left the pieces of a broken civilization behind after a virus pandemic, to go back to his roots in the woodlands. Years later a wounded woman appears on his doorstep, claiming to have escaped from a lab because they believe her blood is the key to a worldwide cure. The film also stars Olga Kent, Daniel Nehme, Stanislav Yanevski, Madeleine Vall, and Natassia Malthe. This definitely looks like a macho woodsman badass takes-on-the-government-assholes kind of film, which might actually be entertaining to watch? Lock 'n load. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Fansu Njie's Last Man Down, direct from...

Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness has taken the locked down world by storm, inspiring a whirlwind of memes, at least one lawsuit, and even prompting Netflix to release a hastily put together ‘Aftershow’ catching up with some of the main players after the series became a humungous hit.
Reaching viewers who wouldn’t necessarily have called themselves documentary fans, Tiger King may have inspired audiences to seek out other true life stories. But if you’re someone who just needs more like Tiger King, Finders Keepers, which is available for free with Amazon Prime, is your next stop. So much so that the 2015 documentary, directed by Bryan Carberry and Clay Tweel, actually feels like a companion piece.
Here’s the logline: “A story about fame, addiction and a custody battle over a man’s leg.”
Intrigued? It gets weirder.

It’s great when a fancy costume picture really has something to say — Alan Bennett’s crazy tale of a king’s episode of mental illness becomes a highly entertaining comedy of errors, but with serious personal and political ramifications. Nigel Hawthorne is exceptionally good as the sovereign whose brain has de-railed; Helen Mirren, Ian Holm, Rupert Everett and Amanda Donohoe variously try to help him — or steal his crown.

Due to ‘The Hateful Eight’ hitting cinema screens at the end of the month and a slight obsession with Quentin Tarantino, I decided it was time to review From Dusk till Dawn – one of my favourite Horror films; especially with the TV series that Robert Rodriguez (also Director of the original film) has expanded on, I thought it would be great to see how the two differ.
As already mentioned, ‘From Dusk till Dawn’ features Director Robert Rodriguez and the screenplay was brought alive by Quentin Tarantino himself; starring George Clooney, Harvey Keital, Juliette Lewis, Selma Hayek, Danny Trejo – who had previously appeared in other films directed by Rodriguez but ironically hadn’t discovered until this film that they were related; and also stars Michael Parks as Texas Ranger Earl McGraw who cameos in other Tarantino films as the same character.

The 1983 hacker film WarGames will soon be rebooted as an interactive video with new characters and plots, allowing viewers to decide where the action will go. Variety reports that the "digital remake" will come out early next year.
The original movie took place during the Cold War and revolved around a young hacker, played by Matthew Broderick, who stumbles into the U.S. government's War Operation Plan Response supercomputer, which calculated the probability of nuclear winter. Omar Sharif in 'Doctor Zhivago.' Egyptian star Omar Sharif, 'The Karate Kid' producer Jerry Weintraub: Brief career recaps A little late in the game – and following the longish Theodore Bikel article posted yesterday – below are brief career recaps of a couple of film veterans who died in July 2015: actor Omar Sharif and producer Jerry Weintraub. A follow-up post will offer an overview of the career of peplum (sword-and-sandal movie) actor Jacques Sernas, whose passing earlier this month has been all but ignored by the myopic English-language media. Omar Sharif: Film career beginnings in North Africa The death of Egyptian film actor Omar Sharif at age 83 following a heart attack on July 10 would have been ignored by the English-language media (especially in the U.S.) as well had Sharif remained a star within the Arabic-speaking world. 'Nicholas and Alexandra': Movie starred Michael Jayston and Janet Suzman 'Nicholas and Alexandra' movie review: Opulent 1971 spectacle lacks emotional core Nicholas and Alexandra is surely one of the most sumptuous film productions ever made. The elaborate sets and costumes, Richard Rodney Bennett's lush musical score, and frequent David Lean collaborator Freddie Young's richly textured cinematography provide the perfect period atmosphere for this historical epic. Missing, however, is a screenplay that offers dialogue instead of speeches, and a directorial hand that brings out emotional truth instead of soapy melodrama. Nicholas and Alexandra begins when, after several unsuccessful attempts, Tsar Nicholas II (Michael Jayston) finally becomes the father of a boy. Shortly thereafter, he and his wife, the German-born Empress Alexandra (Janet Suzman), have their happiness crushed when they discover that their infant son is a hemophiliac. In addition to his familial turmoil, the Tsar must also deal with popular...

Amy Schumer and Bill Hader in TrainwreckPhoto: Universal Pictures With Sundance just wrapping up and Berlin starting up in a few days, we are now immersed in the year-long barrage of film festivals. One such festival in South By Southwest. A few weeks back they announced the first seven films of their program, including the opening night film Brand: A Second Coming. Today, they have revealed the rest of the features to be shown in March (except for the midnight program), and some of it has me very excited. The bigger titles announced do not do much for me. Paul Feig's Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy, and the Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart starrer Get Hard leave a lot to be desired in terms of anticipation, as does a work in progress cut of Judd Apatow's latest film Trainwreck. I'm guessing an Apatow work in progress is probably around three and a half hours.

My DVD of Just Like a Woman (1967), pre-ordered months earlier and delayed because it was in the same order as The Devils (1971), arrived two days after its director, Robert Fuest, died. Come to think of it, I think Ken Russell was still alive when I ordered The Devils. An obituary double feature.
Above: Career best performance. Career worst hair.
I was very keen to see Just Like a Woman, Fuest’s first feature, even though I wasn’t expecting it to be particularly good. I had an idea it was a swinging London sex comedy, not the kind of material he was associated with. For that, you’d have to look at his art-deco grand guignol comedies The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) and its sequel from the following year, Dr. Phibes Rises Again, and also at his pop-art masterpiece, The Final Programme (1973). England Reborn
A new year traditionally is seen as a fresh start, an opportunity to clear out the clutter and begin again. Therefore is it particularly apt England will be naming a new Elite Performance Squad (Eps) for the forthcoming Six Nations with 2012 barely two weeks old.
With what has went before dissipating into the haze of 2011, a wave of mid-season optimism is washing over the England set-up, a curious sensation given it is a feeling normally only seen around clubhouses in the middle of summer as boots are dusted down for the start of pre-season.

Following up their initial competition announcement the folks at the Sundance Film Festival have released the names of thirty additional 2012 selections, in the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, Next, and New Frontiers sections.
Although these sections tend to focus more on young and up-and-coming filmmakers (particularly the Next sidebar, which was created just a few years ago with that specific mandate), you might find a few names you recognize in the full list of invited films below. Next is where you'll find the new film from "Great World of Sound" director Craig Zobel; it's called "Compliance" and it's described as the (based-on-a-)true story of what happens "when a prank caller convinces a fast food restaurant manager to interrogate an innocent young employee." Next is where you'll find the new film from "Great World of Sound" director Craig Zobel; it's called "Compliance" and it's described as the (based-on-a-)true story of what happens "when a prank caller convinces a fast food restaurant manager to interrogate an innocent young employee." Lynn Shelton, director of "Humpday," will premiere "Your Sister's Sister" starring Emily Blunt, Rosemarie DeWitt and "Humpday"s Mark Duplass. Duplass also wrote his wife Katie Aselton...

Yesterday Sundance released their films up for competition for the 2012 festival. But that was only one half of the festival slate. Now Sundance has released the second half of films that will be released as part of the festivities. Films in competition are just as interesting as those not in competition and with titles The Raid and Wuthering Heights are all on the list, it will be a fun watch this year.
Check out the list for the Out of Competition film that can be seen at the Sundance Film Festival 2012 below.

Yesterday The Sundance Film Festival released their list of In-Competition films, today they have released their line-up of Non-Competition films. I've had a blast every year that I've attended The Sundance Film Festival, it's always a surprise! You never know what movie you are going to see until you see it. If you ever get a chance to go I highly recommend that you do. Each film on the list has a little description next to it. The festival will take place January 19th to the 29th.
Check out the list of movies below and let us know of any that you are interested in watching or hearing about so that we can get it covered for you. Some of the films might look familiar to you such as The Raid, Grabbers and Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie, and Wuthering Heights. The Raid is at the top of...

Yesterday the Sundance Film Festival announced the core lineup of films [1] that will be spotlit in the Competition slates at the 2012 festival. Now we've got a lineup of films that will play out of competition in the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, Next <=> and New Frontier schedules. There are a few films in here with which you might be nominally familiar, like The Raid, Grabbers and Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie, not to mention Andrea Arnold's new version of Wuthering Heights. But many are new announcements. While the competition lineups are always a good place to look for some of the films that will be the most talked-about in the year following each Sundance fest, these schedules are where some of the more unique and provocative films live. There are still some big premieres to be announced next week, but if I was making a big Sundance wishlist,...

Following yesterday's announcement of the titles lined up for the four programs of the Competition, the Sundance Film Festival has unveiled the lineups of its out-of-competition sections: Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, Next <=> and New Frontier. This time, I'm going to go ahead and copy-n-paste the release nearly in full because, well, these are, potentially at least, the more interesting batches.
We'll cut in just as Trevor Groth, Director of Programming for the Sundance Film Festival, is saying, “In many ways, the extremes of the Festival’s program are most readily apparent in our out-of-competition sections, which showcase the wildest comedies, the most terrifying horror films and uncompromised visions from singular voices springing up from around the country and the world. We hope audiences experiment with their film selections to an equal degree as these filmmakers have experimented with their storytelling.”

Following yesterday’s announcement of competition titles, Sundance Film Festival 2012 have announced the line-up for a few more sections today. In their Spotlight section we have a few of my favorite Tiff titles, including Wuthering Heights (pictured above), Your Sister’s Sister, as well as audience-winners The Raid and Where Do We Go Now? We also get the insane-looking Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie in the midnight section. Check out the list below.

With seven changes to the team that beat Georgia 41-10 last Sunday, all the headlines were on Hrh Mike Tindall, who has been targeted by the media following the release of CCTV footage of him talking to a woman. The fact nothing of note actually happened has been overlooked by the papers, and it’s not something I would expect to affect Tindall’s performance as he replaces Shontayne Hape. Martin Johnson is clever enough not to take the risk if he even thought there was a chance. And who would argue with Johnno? Anyone? Exactly…
In what could be considered close to the first choice Xv, Mark Cueto makes his return for the unfortunate Delon Artmitage. Manu Tuilagi is given another chance to find his feet at the top level at outside centre, and Jonny Wilkinson slots back in to fly-half after an encouraging performance last week from Toby Flood.

As I sat at an hour that time forgot and my shoulders draped in an England flag (thanks 02) doubling as a poor excuse for a duvet, my overwhelming feeling for this game was “please be better England.”
Not “please win”, just better. Why? Well this game, with the greatest respect, was not one that should have been thought of as a ‘maybe’. Admittedly the Georgians have made great strides from World Cup’s of old (anyone remember 85-6 against England in 2003?) and gave the Scots a though time earlier this week, but given our standing in the world game, anything but a ‘W’ would have been unacceptable.
The team selection didn’t give too many surprises. As is the done thing now, the team was rotated wholeheartedly with the Youngs and Flood partnership given the chance to validate a more attractive attacking set up.
An opportunistic early try from Shontayne...

Through his piercing intellect, the late British actor John Wood redefined every role he played
I've been very lucky in my professional life. And one of my greatest strokes of good fortune was arriving at the Guardian at the very moment when John Wood, who has died aged 81, was emerging into the front rank of British actors. He was always a joy to write about.
Partly because, with his accosting profile and lean frame, he presented an ineradicable physical image. But even more because, when he wasn't creating new characters in Stoppard plays, he redefined every role he played.
That, for me, is the ultimate test of a great actor: to make you see things in a new light. Olivier did it through divine intuition: Wood through a piercing intellect that led him, at one stage, to think of becoming an academic. He was, for instance, the first Brutus I'd...

Ferociously intelligent actor who reigned supreme in Stoppard and Shakespeare
John Wood, who has died aged 81, was one of the greatest stage actors of the past century, especially associated with his roles in the plays of Tom Stoppard. But a combination of his enigmatic privacy and low profile on film – he cropped up a lot without dominating a movie – meant that he remained largely unknown to the wider public.
As with all great actors, you always knew what he was thinking, all the time. Wood was especially striking in the brain-box department. Tall, forbidding and aquiline-featured, he was as much the perfect Sherlock Holmes on stage as he was the ideal Brutus. He exuded ferocious intelligence, and the twinkle in his eye could be as merciless as it was invariably amused.
As the Royal Shakespeare Company's Brutus in Julius Caesar in 1972, he was undoubtedly the noblest Roman of them all,...

Before the link roundups I wanted to say a fond farewell to British actor John Wood who died at 81 this weekend in his sleep. I'll always remember him as the Bishop of Aquila who was driven to madness and lust by the beauty of the young Michelle Pfeiffer in Ladyhawke (1985). It happens.
Though the Tony winner spent much of his time on stage he also had several screen roles including parts in hits like War Games (1983), critical darlings like Orlando (1993) and The Purple Rose of Cairo (1995) and Oscar favorites like The Madness of King George (1994) and Chocolat (2000). His final feature film was also the final Merchant/Ivory film The White Countess (2005). Rip John Wood.
Socialite Life Harry Shum Jr (Glee) is taking voice lessons. Guess he doesn't wanna wear that "Can't Sing" t-shirt on the show anymore.
Vulture surveys Southern accents in the movies and compares them to the real thing.

An accomplished TV, film and stage performer, Wood began his career in 1952, when he landed his first film role in Stolen Face.
He went on to earn a name for himself onstage with a number of Royal Shakespeare Company productions, and he won a Tony Award in 1976 for his role in Tom Stoppard play Travesties. He later earned another two Tony nominations and one for an Olivier Award in 1997, for his turn in another Stoppard piece, The Invention of Love.
Wood's most notable film credits include WarGames (1983), Ladyhawke (1985), Ian McKellen's Richard III (1995), and 1994's The Madness of King George, while his TV work ranged from Kavanagh QC (1997) and Foyle's War (2004) to his most recent show, 2007's Lewis.
He was honoured by Queen Elizabeth II in 2007 when he was made a Commander of the British Empire (Cbe) in recognition of his services to drama.

The Girl Who Played With Fire (Music Box Films) Follow up to the hit The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo finds Lisabeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) and Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) joining forces once again as Blomkvist is about to break a story on Sweden’s sex trade, which leads unexpectedly to a dark secret from Elizabeth’s past. Starts off well, then quickly nose-dives into sensationalism and downright silliness, with a pair of villains who are straight out of a Roger Moore-era James Bond film. A real letdown for those of us who felt Dragon Tattoo had finally breathed life into the cinema’s long-stagnant genre of the thriller. Bonuses: English language track; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
