Nicole Kidman is trading in the glass of milk for fields of multi-colored tulip and picturesque windmills. The Oscar-winning actress stars in the upcoming thriller film Holland from Fresh director Mimi Cave, streaming exclusively on Prime Video this March.
Fresh was a big hit for Hulu when it debuted in 2022. Starring Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones, Fresh starts out as a traditional romantic comedy and then slowly transforms into something far more sinister as it is revealed that the male lead is a cannibal. Cave received praise for her direction and many of us have been eager to see what she does next.
Holland is described as a "wildly unpredictable thriller" and the newly released trailer teases that nothing in this movie will be as expected. It centers on Kidman's character, a picture-perfect homemaker named Nancy Vandergroot. The Vandergroot family are beloved by their quaint and lovely town of Holland,...

Nicole Kidman just might be returning to the land of “Stepford Wives” for her latest feature, “Holland.”

“Succession” Emmy winner Matthew Macfadyen and Jude Hill play Kidman’s onscreen family. “Holland” will premiere at the 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival.
Errol Morris was originally announced as the director for the film in 2013; the film, which was originally titled “Holland, Michigan,” has been in the works for more than a decade, with Cave and Kidman both joining in 2022. Bill Fay, the cult British singer-songwriter whose music was later championed by artists like Jeff Tweedy and Nick Cave, leading to a late-career resurgence, has died at the age of 81.

"The goal of the place is to give them their freedom back." Madman Films in Australia has revealed the trailer for a documentary film titled Ellis Park, telling the story of musician Warren Ellis. This is actually directed by the acclaimed Australian filmmaker Justin Kurzel, of Macbeth, Assassin's Creed, Nitram, The Order. It first premiered at the 2024 London & Melbourne Film Festivals last year. A key member of iconic bands The Dirty Three and Nick Cave's Bad Seeds, multi-instrumentalist Warren Ellis has cut a brilliant and unorthodox figure in music for over three decades. Far from the international concert halls in which he has plied his craft lies a very different passion project: a wildlife sanctuary in the forests of Sumatra. This place is co-founded by Ellis and spearheaded by the indomitable Femke den Haas, whose dedicated team of conservationists rescues trafficked and mistreated animals and then devotes years to nursing them back to health.

“The Brutalist” cinematographer Lol Crawley will be honored with the Robby Müller Award at the 54th edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, which runs Jan. 30 – Feb. 9.
The award acknowledges the “artistry of an exceptional image maker,” and is given in collaboration with the Netherlands Society of Cinematographers and Andrea Müller-Schirmer, the wife of the late Dutch cinematographer Robby Müller.
The award will be accompanied by a talk from Crawley during the festival, as well as a screening of “The Brutalist,” which marks the Dutch premiere of the film.
The jury for this year’s Robby Müller Award noted: “Lol Crawley’s camera is dedicated to the story and characters in a way that is both humble and ardent. It forms a close, dynamic relationship with them. His sensual cinematography embraces the environment as unpredictable and fluid and aims to align with its flow rather than confine it to a predefined frame.

Russell Crowe wanted to keep spectators entertained.
While the Oscar-winning star of 2000’s Gladiator is not in the film’s follow-up, he did valiantly try to be. According to helmer Ridley Scott, Crowe wanted to reincarnate his character of Maximus, the brave Colosseum fighter who expires at the end of the original epic.
“Russell and I had a go at it around 18 years ago,” Scott told People in a recent interview. “I had Nick Cave writing the script and I kept saying [to Russell], ‘But you’re dead.’ And he said, ‘I know I’m dead. And I want to come back from the dead.'”
Indeed, according to a 2018 BBC article, musician Nick Cave was commissioned by Crowe to pen a sequel, purportedly telling the scribe to “sort [his death] out” in the new film. In the never-made-sequel, Maximus wakes in a purgatory of sorts filled with Roman gods who conscript his services...

Earlier this week, Bob Dylan shared on Twitter/X that he had recently attended Nick Cave’s concert in Paris. “I was really struck by that song ‘Joy’ where he sings ‘We’ve all had too much sorrow, now it the time for joy,’ I was thinking to myself, yeah that’s about right,” Dylan wrote.
Now, via his website The Red Hand Files, Cave has responded to Dylan’s post. As Cave explained, “I hadn’t known Bob was at the concert and his tweet was a lovely pulse of joy that penetrated my exhausted, zombied state.”

Gladiator 2 has finally arrived, but many fans are left wondering if the original star of Gladiator, Russell Crowe, appears in the sequel. Over two decades after the original movie's release, audiences return to the Roman Empire and gladiator rings for another historical epic. The first Gladiator helped turn Russell Crowe into a box office star, but his incredible performance as Maximus also led to an Oscar win for Best Actor. It remains one of his most iconic roles as a result, and there have been various attempts to get him back for a sequel over the years.
After a long delay, Gladiator 2 has arrived with Paul Mescal in the lead role as an adult Lucius. While director Ridley Scott returns to helm the movie, his leading man Crowe is not part of the movie. This might not come as a surprise to many fans considering Gladiator's ending saw Maximus die.

While Gladiator II has finally arrived, the sequel was nearly 25 years in the making and went through some ideas over the years. The original Gladiator, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe, premiered in 2000 to strong critical and commercial success. The movie went on to win several Oscars, including Best Actor for Crowe and Best Picture. Decades after its release, the movie continues to be a beloved historical epic which is evidenced by the excitement about the long-awaited sequel.
However, given the success of the first movie, it is not surprising that there have been many attempts over the years to deliver a follow-up. The death of Crowe's Maximus at the end of Gladiator made it hard to figure out what direction the story could take. However, before landing on the legacy sequel that eventually hit theaters, there were some unexpected ideas for a Gladiator sequel that almost came to fruition,...

Ridley Scott explains how Steven Spielberg contributed to the original Gladiator II script being scrapped. After Gladiator became a critical and commercial hit following its theatrical release in 2000, it took more than two decades for a sequel to come to fruition. The Gladiator II story releasing in 2024, directed by Scott and with a cast led by Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington, is entirely different from the original script written years earlier by musician Nick Cave.
While speaking with The New York Times, Scott explains that Spielberg encouraged him to not move forward with Cave's script. Spielberg was not the only one skeptical about it, as Scott already had his own misgivings about Cave's story that featured Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe) being resurrected. Scott discusses other elements of Cave's script and why he believes they would not have worked well. Check out Scott's comments below:

Long before Gladiator 2's release in 2024, a script was written that provided a wildly different direction for the sequel. Even though the original Gladiator ending concludes with the death of the protagonist, Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe), who gets his revenge and restores Rome as Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) intended, there was still interest in a sequel. Part of this interest came from the project's financial success, as it proved to be a box office hit and was the second highest-grossing movie at the worldwide box office in 2000 (via Box Office Mojo).
Interest in the sequel went beyond the financial incentives, though, as director Ridley Scott and Crowe had ideas about seeing the story continue with Gladiator 2. Of course, one of the most significant challenges for a sequel was how it could incorporate Maximus at the center of its story, considering his fate in the first movie. This...

And now for something completely different… The Extraordinary Miss Flower, a new biographical filmic experience from British artists Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, known for their Nick Cave film 20,000 Days on Earth, is set for its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival (Lff) on Saturday. Miss Flower is very different from many of the other offerings of the Lff. “When Geraldine Flower passed away, her family uncovered a secret cache of letters containing declarations of love from suitors around the globe, hinting at the possibility of a life of espionage,” reads its synopsis. “Taking inspiration, Icelandic singer-songwriter Emilíana Torrini recorded an album that forms the spine of this filmic fever dream. Back in 2000, director Ridley Scott took us back to 180 Ad for Gladiator, which told the story of Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius (played by Russell Crowe), who is favored by Emperor Marcus Aurelius to be his successor because his own son, Commodus, is unfit to rule. Commodus disagrees, so he murders his father, has Maximus arrested, and has Maximus’s wife and son killed. While Commodus establishes himself as the new emperor, Maximus escapes from captivity – only to be captured again, this time by slavers who sell him off to become a gladiator. Soon he’s fighting in front of Commodus in Rome’s Colosseum… and it all builds up to Commodus challenging Maximus to a duel. Gladiator was a major box office success and racked up multiple Academy Award wins, including Best Picture. So there was already talk of a sequel in 2001, but it ended up taking more than...

On a solo tour last year, Nick Cave suddenly became self-aware. He built his career performing with bands — the Birthday Party, Grinderman, the Bad Seeds — but here he was with only a piano and Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood supporting him. As they worked their way through nearly two dozen songs every night, Cave started thinking deeply about his songwriting.
“When I was singing these songs alone at the piano with just the bass — old songs, new songs, over 45 years of songwriting — they spoke their original intent,” he says, thoughtfully choosing his words on a call.

Apple is making a notable change to its popular Podcasts app, putting a spotlight on narrative-driven series.
The focus on series will include a new “Series” category in the app, as well as a Top Series chart that will include the top 100 serialized podcasts on the platform. In addition, Apple will launch Series Essentials, which will see Apple Podcasts editors select one podcast each month to highlight within the app.
“[Series] are, we think some of the most impactful shows in podcasting. They’re the ones that we can’t stop thinking about. They’re the ones that everyone’s talking about as well, sometimes years after they’ve been released, and they’re the ones that we recommend the most to our friends and family,” Ben Cave, Apple’s global head of Podcasts, tells The Hollywood Reporter in an interview. “I think they’re also critically, a place for innovation as well.

In just two months, Gladiator II will be hitting theaters. However, Ridley Scott first began considering a Gladiator sequel two decades ago… and it would have been absolutely bizarre, bringing Maximus (Russell Crowe) back from the dead in a supernatural tale full of Roman gods and mythology.
After first considering a prequel about Maximus’s early days in the military and a sequel which focused on corruption and politics in Rome, Scott shifted gears when he tapped Nick Cave to pen the script. The result was unlike anything you would have expected.
The script for the proposed Gladiator sequel would have opened with Maximus awakening in the afterlife, but not the one he imagined in the first movie. Instead, it’s a rain-soaked purgatory filled with miserable souls. He meets a guide named Mordecai, who takes him to meet Jupiter, Apollo, Mars, Pluto, Neptune, Mercury, and Bacchus. The deities aren...

Russell Crowe has repeatedly stated that neither Ridley Scott nor anyone involved with “Gladiator 2” reached out to him to consult on the upcoming sequel considering the follow-up’s storyline has little to do with the character he played in the 2000 original. Crowe won an Oscar for “Gladiator,” but his character, Maximus, died at the end of the movie. Scott recently told Empire magazine (via ScreenRant) that he hopes his relationship with Crowe is still in good shape after not reaching out about “Gladiator 2.”
“The plot, frankly, was right under our noses,” Scott said about the sequel. “I think it was so close under our noses that we thought it was too simple. I think [Russell Crowe] is still one of the best actors in the world, and I think we have a good relationship. I hope we do. As long as he doesn’t start bitching about how he wasn’t consulted.

At the end of Ridley Scott's 2000 peplum film "Gladiator," the general-turned-gladiator Maximus (Russell Crowe) is forced to fight the corrupt emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) in the arena. Commodus is wickd and terrible and stabs Maximus before the fight even begins. Despite the injury, Maximus overwhelms Commodus and stabs him in the neck. With his dying breaths, Commodus calls out for political reforms and urges that all imprisoned gladiators be released. Maximus then passes into the afterlife where he is reunited with his dead wife and son. It's a corny ending to a sluggish, muddy movie, but it was effective enough to net "Gladiator" $451.7 million at the worldwide box office. I heard it also won some awards.
Scott's "Gladiator II" is due in theaters this fall. This new film is set 20 years after the events of the first movie, and is all about the character named Lucius Verus (Paul Mescal...

Since the ongoing crisis in the Middle East escalated to a new level last October, many artists have mobilized to use their platforms in a variety of ways, including participating in the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (Bds) movement and cultural boycotts of Israel. Some, though, have doubts about the effectiveness of such moves, like Nick Cave, who has pushed back against calls for such boycotts in a new interview.
Speaking with Nick Gillespie for an episode of The Reason Interview, Cave explained that while he considers himself “no friend of the government of Israel,” he finds it difficult to accept the idea of “using my music to punish ordinary people because of the acts of their government.”

Nick Cave has spent the last six years in conversation. Through his Red Hand Files Website and his touring Q&a series, the 66-year-old punk-rock icon has waxed poetic with his fans about grief, aging, and forgiveness. And after dropping the Bad Seeds’ last record, the devastating Ghosteen, in 2019, it seems he’s ready to talk about something that’s sadly rare in these times: joy.
On the band’s latest, Wild God Cave plays preacher, congregation, and god over the course of a suite of songs that are in equal measure elegiac and ecstatic.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are back with “Long Dark Night,” the latest song from their upcoming new album Wild God.
“Long Dark Night” follows previous Wild God singles “Wild God” and “Frogs.” Rooted in stirring piano and finger-plucked acoustic guitar, “Long Dark Night” is a country ballad from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, complete with evocative harmonies in the chorus and a sense of lonesome ennui. Cave’s booming baritone mutters around the verses, landing in poignant clarity when he wonders, “Maybe a long dark night is coming down.” Stream “Long Dark Night” below.
Nick Cave was inspired by the poem “Dark Night of the Soul” by the Spanish 16th-century poet St. John of the Cross when writing “Long Dark Night.” “‘Long Dark Night’ is inspired by one of the greatest and most powerful poems of conversion ever written,” Cave said in a statement about the song.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is now available on VOD. There’s no way around it – the film’s theatrical release was a huge disappointment, as it earned back only a fraction of its reported budget and has put the release of the second film in major jeopardy. However, now that it’s streaming, the hope is that people will be able to discover it at home, perhaps paving the way for this saga to continue. If you’ve watched Horizon and are jonesing for more modern westerns to check out, here are some we really like here at JoBlo.

Nick Cave has written many, many songs. But lately, he’s been at odds with the process, calling songwriting “a fucking nightmare” in a new interview.
Speaking to Mojo, the musician expressed discomfort with the act of sitting down and writing a song. “I don’t like writing songs. To write a song is this deeply mysterious, abstract, anxiety-ridden process that’s just not fun,” Cave said. “Playing around with the kid is fine but to get the kid out is a fucking nightmare. So I put it off until I can’t put it off any further.”
Against all those obstacles, Cave still managed to bust out 10 songs for his forthcoming album with his band the Bad Seeds, Wild God, which arrives on August 30th. While the air of Wild God is one that is both “complicated” and “joyous and infectious,” Cave also opened up about his heartbreaking 2019 album Ghosteen,...

Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episodes 1 through 8.
"Pretty Little Liars: Summer School" offers a bright summer slasher vibe with familiar characters and a new villain. Returning characters face new challenges as they navigate summer school and encounter the mysterious "Bloody Rose." The Max show's soundtrack includes popular songs like "School's Out" by Alice Cooper and "Cruel Summer" by Bananarama.
Pretty Little Liars: Summer School is a stark contrast to Original Sin, with brighter tones, sunny vibes, and, of course, several pop hits that are perfect for summer break. The slasher and horror elements are still present (proven by the haunting instrumental additions to the show's score) as the five teenagers recover from their experience with "A," aka Archie Waters, and try to move on. However, a new villain named "Bloody Rose" throws a wrench into the characters' plans in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.

With rich, psychedelic instrumentation and Nick Cave’s signature booming tenor, “Frogs” is a passionate, climactic turn from the group. Helping raise the stakes is an extensive orchestra, which echo Cave’s consuming messages with fanfare and melodrama. Cave begins with a biblical reference to Cain and Abel, and later escalates to a freeing, revelatory high. “The frogs are jumping in the gutters/ Leaping to God, amazed of love,” he sings before crying “Amazed to be back in the water again.”
Of the song, Cave said in a statement, “The sheer exuberance of a song like ‘Frogs,’ it just puts a big fucking smile on my face.” Produced by Cave and Warren Ellis, “Frogs” follows Wild God’s title track, which we named as Song of the Week upon its release in early March.
