While working as an executive producer at Fox News Channel, Justin Wells oversaw some of the cable-news outlet’s most controversial segments, as well as many hours of documentary programming crafted expressly for its Fox Nation streaming service. Now he wants to offer his expertise to less partisan media companies.
Wells, who helped build and run “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” has created a six-part documentary series, “Art of the Surge,” that follows former President Donald Trump through recent months of campaigning. One of the most salient features: Wells had a camera stationed just feet away as Secret Service agents scrambled to protect Trump during an assassination attempt in Butler, Pa. The series debuts Wednesday on Carlson’s digital media properties, and, says Wells, is getting interest from an array of players — not just the usual suspects.
“Let me put it this way: I’m surprised,” he says during a recent interview.

Former NBC News anchor Brian Williams will reportedly host a live election night special on Prime Video, marking Amazon’s first go at news coverage.
Though the deal is not final, The L.A. Times reports that it will differ from traditional election coverage and rely on state-by-state calls made by the Associated Press, as opposed to an internal decision desk examining data and calling results. Veteran TV producer Jonathan Wald, who worked with Williams at NBC, would oversee the production. TVLine has reached out to Amazon for comment.

Amazon is in talks with Brian Williams, the former NBC News and MSNBC anchor, to host an election night special for the streaming service, according to two sources familiar with the plans.
The special would be the first major high profile project for Williams, who exited his popular MSNBC show The 11th Hour in 2021.
The deal is not done, and a source cautioned that the special should not be a signal that Amazon Prime Video is moving into news. The special would feature a mix of contributors, with the goal that the special would be non-partisan.
That said, the special would mark Amazon’s first foray into a live news event, at a time when linear networks are also trying to gain a foothold in streaming. All major broadcast networks have streaming channels, while MSNBC, CNN and Fox News have taken various approaches in platforms. Election night is likely to...

Brian Williams may have found his next TV-news job….except it won’t be on traditional TV.
The veteran NBC News and MSNBC anchor is in late-stage discussions to host a live Election Night special on Amazon Prime Video, according to five people familiar with the matter. The aim, these people say, is to have a non-partisan discussion of that evening’s events. If the project comes to fruition, it could mark the first entry into news-related programming by one of the industry’s stand-alone streaming giants, which have largely focused on movies, scripted original series and reality programming.
The concept isn’t necessarily guaranteed to be completed, these people cautioned. Amazon declined to make executives available for comment. Through a spokesman, Williams declined to comment.

Norah O’Donnell will cede the reins of the venerable “CBS Evening News” after the 2024 presidential election in favor of a new role as a senior correspondent who will seek out big interviews and opportunities for deeper reporting, the latest major change at CBS News after its business was merged with that of the local-tv operations of parent company Paramount Global.
O’Donnell, who recently celebrated her fifth year in the anchor chair, sees an opportunity to pursue signature interviews with top newsmakers — something that proved appealing to her after logging stints as both a morning-show co-anchor and an evening-news presence and after her recent sit-down with Pope Francis earlier this year.
“Together, our team has won Emmy, Murrow, and DuPont awards. We managed to anchor in-studio through Covid; we took the broadcast on the road from aircraft carriers to the Middle East, and around the world. We were privileged to conduct...

Google a list of the all-time best Saturday Night Live hosts, and you’ll find a surprising number of people who you’d never guess were funny in the first place.
I mean, before SNL, who knew athletes Charles Barkley and Peyton Manning were hilarious? Who watched Nsync videos and predicted that Justin Timberlake had “Dick in a Box” in him? Billie Eilish? Chance the Rapper? Anyone have news anchor Brian Williams on their funny bingo card?
As the show embarks on its landmark 50th season, here are five more suggestions for out-of-the-box SNL hosts who just might knock it out of the park…
1 Tony Hawk
Hawk has been quietly comedy-adjacent for years, appearing in College Humor sketches, skateboarding in a fat suit in a Jackass movie and lending his voice to The Simpsons.

Jack Quaid doesn’t shy away from being called a “nepo baby.”
“No matter what I do, people are going to call attention to it. People have called me a ‘nepo baby.’ I’m inclined to agree,” said the 32-year-old “The Boys” star, whose parents are Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan. “I am an immensely privileged person, was able to get representation pretty early on, and that’s more than half the battle.”
Quaid was asked on The Daily Beast’s “The Last Laugh” podcast if he consciously tried to avoid romantic comedies to avoid comparisons to his mother, whose credits include some of the greatest films in the genre, from “When Harry Met Sally” to “You’ve Got Mail.”
“It was a little bit of a conscious decision to not do it as much. It’s just got to be right, because, you know, my mom is the undisputed queen of rom-coms.

Past Lives took the top prize of best feature at the 2023 Gotham Awards on Monday night. The film went into the night up for three awards.
Fellow three-time and best feature nominee A Thousand and One picked up the breakthrough director award, in the all-female category, as helmer A.V. Rockwell gave an emotional speech about the challenges of telling authentic stories about certain identities.
“Maybe one of the biggest things actually was telling a very truthful, authentic, very raw experience that can be so hard when it’s culturally specific and I felt like I fought tooth and nail for every inch of, every piece of what you’ve seen on screen,” Rockwell said, tearing up. “Just to be frank, it is very hard to tell a very culturally specific story when you look like this,” she added, touching the skin on the back of her hand.

When I heard Rob Reiner was planning to direct a documentary on a true comic icon and genius named Albert Brooks, I thought “Now this will be good!” Reiner is not only a smart and talented filmmaker in his own right, but also a longtime friend of Brooks, with whom he went to high school and even co-starred with him in drama department productions. I am happy to report this HBO Original documentary, Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, premiering Saturday night and then streaming on Max, not only more than met my high expectations but exceeded them.
Set in a plush dark red restaurant booth, the film is anchored simply by a conversation between Reiner and Brooks. The visual is almost identical to the opening scene of Brooks’ 1981 Modern Romance, where he and his girlfriend are breaking up,...

David Corvo, the guiding force behind hundreds of hours of NBC’s signature “Dateline” newsmagazine, will step away from the role at the end of 2023, bringing to a close a TV-news career that has spanned four decades.
Corvo has been with “Dateline” in some capacity since joining NBC News in 1995 as a vice president responsible for primetime news programming. Under his aegis, the show has morphed from a general-interest newsmagazine — anchored in its earliest days by Stone Philips and Jane Pauley — to a massive content franchise focused intently on true-crime stories. Over the years, “Dateline” has expanded into podcasts; a 24/7 streaming channel; and even scripted fare, as seen in the 2022 NBC limited series, “The Thing About Pam,” which starred Renee Zellweger.
Corvo, who has been senior executive producer of “Dateline,” will hand off those duties to Liz Cole, the program’s executive producer and president of NBC News Studios, where she will maintain her duties.

It’s strangely appropriate that Rob Reiner’s new documentary, Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, is getting its film festival rollout at a moment when most of Brooks’ body of work as a writer-director is unavailable on any major streaming platform.
Maybe classics like Real Life, Lost in America and Defending Your Life will have streaming homes by the time HBO airs the documentary in November. But you know what will always be available? Finding Nemo. Brooks is justifiably revered in certain circles, but the decline of a popular monoculture since the 1970s, when his Saturday Night Live shorts and Johnny Carson appearances made his brand of irony-fueled wit pleasantly mainstream, means that for a larger audience, he’s a talking fish.

Washington, July 18 (Ians) A new space mission led by the Jaxa (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), aims to probe high-energy light into the equivalent of an X-ray rainbow.
The satellite called Xrism is scheduled to launch from Japan’s Tanegashima Space Center on August 25.
Xrism’s instrument called Resolve will probe the high-energy light.
“Resolve will give us a new look into some of the universe’s most energetic objects, including black holes, clusters of galaxies, and the aftermath of stellar explosions,” said Richard Kelley, NASA’s Xrism principal investigator at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, in a statement.
“We’ll learn more about how they behave and what they’re made of using the data the mission collects after launch,” Kelley added.
Resolve is an X-ray microcalorimeter spectrometer instrument collaboration between NASA and Jaxa. It measures tiny temperature changes created when an X-ray hits its 6-by-6-pixel detector.

The BBC staffer accused of paying a teenager for sexually explicit photographs has been named as Huw Edwards, one of the network’s top anchors.

When Rolling Stone asked me to take photos of my experience at the Tribeca Film Festival, where I was releasing my directorial debut Shadow Brother Sunday, I expected to come back to them with lots of behind-the-scenes shots from the point of view of a filmmaker in the middle of the festival circus.

Most festivals don’t want protests. This one encouraged a picket line to form.
The Nantucket Film Festival, which took place June 21-26 on the foggy isle 30 miles off the Massachusetts coast, is uniquely oriented toward the craft of screenwriting. Stars certainly appear — Allison Williams brought the glamour this year — but pen and paper are more important here than primping and pompadours.
The WGA has been a longtime partner of the festival, and the biggest gala event was a Screenwriters Tribute honoring Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, the “To All the Boys I Loved Before” scribe Jenny Han, and Nicole Holofcener, whose “You Hurt My Feelings” screened in the lineup. That film is literally about an author, and so were several others that showed, including Christian Petzold’s “Afire.” And the biggest competition isn’t built around established names at all, but a screenplay contest geared toward finding new talent.

Lester Holt has a new way of delivering headlines to the “NBC Nightly News” crowd.
NBC News is updating the look of its venerable evening newscast, which has been on the air since 1970 and hasn’t undergone a significant overhaul of its graphics since Brian Williams sat in the anchor chair. The new presentation will move away from traditional colors associated with evening-news programs in favor of purple and a warm blue, says Marc Greenstein, senior vice president of design and product for NBC News and MSNBC. Also on tap: a new “N” that can be utilized in innovative fashion on the many new screens on which “Nightly” plays in the era of digital video.
“We want to meet people where they want to consume our products,” says Greenstein, in an interview. Viewers will start to see the new graphics and logo roll out on June 19.

In addition, Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo De Castro, Michelle Jenner, and Leonardo Sbaraglia also star.
Álex Pastor and David Pastor penned the screenplay and co-directed. Dylan Clark, Chris Morgan, Núria Valls, Adrián Guerra, Josh Malerman, and Ryan Lewis produced the post-apocalyptic thriller.

Before patrons of The Original Beef of Chicagoland ever get their delicious sandwiches from chef Carmy Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) on FX’s The Bear, they have to go through manager Richie Jerimovich—an irritable clodhopper who’s both aggravating and engaging all at the same time. He’s played with affection and reverence by Ebon Moss-Bachrach, the blue-eyed breakout best known for his stints on Girls (as Marnie’s husband Desi) and The Punisher. Here, Moss-Bachrach talks about making it big on the comedy series from executive producer Christopher Storer (Ramy).
Deadline: You grew up in Massachusetts. Do you remember what originally inspired in you the desire to act?

There will be no late night laughs in Moscow, comrade. Or anywhere else in Russia, for that matter.
The Russian government has permanently banned talk show hosts Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, and Seth Meyers from entering the country. The three were part of a list of 500 Americans on a list released Friday by the Foreign Ministry, which stated that the decision was made in response to U.S. sanctions.
Also on the list was former President Barack Obama, CNN anchor Erin Burnett, MSNBC hosts Rachel Maddow and Joe Scarborough, and former NBC News anchor Brian Williams.
President Biden’s longtime adviser Anita Dunn was also banned, as was acting Voice of America chief Yolanda Lopez. They join a number of lesser-known military, law enforcement, academics and employees of arms suppliers and tech firms.
The Foreign Ministry claimed the exclusions were people “involved in the spread of Russophobic attitudes and fakes.

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel, CBS’ Stephen Colbert and NBC’s Seth Meyers have been permanently banned from Russia, according to a new list of names released by the Russian government.
On Friday the Russian Foreign Ministry released a list of 500 Americans that it says are now banned from entering the country, with a statement declaring that the decision to ban them is in response to U.S. sanctions.
The list of names includes plenty of politicians (including former President Barack Obama) as well as academics, military and law enforcement officers, and employees or arms suppliers and tech firms. But it also includes a handful of people from the world of entertainment and media.

“This may say a lot about our current culture of celebrity and media these days: all the major cable news networks switched over to non-stop live coverage this afternoon when word arrived that Anna Nicole Smith had died,” we hear an archival Brian Williams report in the opening segment of Anna Nicole Smith: You Don’t Know Me. The tabloid sensation died at age 39 on Feb. 8, 2007. Williams’ implication persists 15 years later, evolving still as new players enter the scene. All the same, Anna Nicole Smith remains a modern icon. She weaved a life’s tapestry that became a blueprint for celebrity fame in the early 21st century. She was also one of the first superstar casualties of the 24-hour news cycle.
It was Anna Nicole’s job to be iconic. That’s why her Guess? Jeans image persists to this day. Smith captured the mood of the 1990s. That 1993 Miami photoshoot...

In today's news of slightly unnecessary projects, Netflix is reviving its hit original film "Bird Box" with a sequel-extension film called "Bird Box Barcelona." You read that right, we're getting another "Bird Box" film, but seemingly one that is simply adjacent to, and not a continuation of, the events of the original. Interesting.
Netflix debuted a one-minute teaser trailer for the new film — which was announced back in March 2021 — and it gives us a glimpse into a similar event as the 2018 film, only in Europe this time. There is chaos in major cities, and folks turn to obscuring their sight in the outside world in order to obtain shelter. Again, it's very much a global repositioning of the events of the first film, however, it does seem like this new story will have some of its own twists and turns.

Back at the end of 2018, Netflix had a huge hit with their apocalyptic horror thriller Bird Box, based on a novel by Josh Malerman (pick up a copy Here). While Malerman has written a Bird Box sequel called Malorie (buy that one Here), Netflix has been focusing on the idea of producing Bird Box spin-offs that will be set in various locations around the globe. First up is a spin-off that’s set in Spain and was written and directed by Alex and David Pastor. While we’ve previously heard that this spin-off was going by the title A Ciegas, which happens to have been the Spanish title used for the first Bird Box, Netflix has now announced that the film is officially titled Bird Box Barcelona – and it will be available to watch on the streaming service as of July 14th!

We all felt doomsday looming over us when Covid-19 spread rapidly in March 2020. HBO’s all-archival documentary Time Bomb Y2K reminds us that, pre-pandemic, the world last witnessed this level of mass hysteria in the late 1990s (even though the 2003 Sars outbreak was more directly related). In the years preceding 2000 computer engineers realized a mass-scale glitch within electronic systems would incorrectly update the year from 1999 to 1900 as the new millennium began because most computer systems only store the last two digits of a year when recording calendar data. Soon theories about how this would lead to global information systems collapsing like wildfire. Hysteria ensued, prompting businesses to go berserk over tackling this problem and civilians to panic as they sought approaches to survive.
Co-directed by debut directors Brian Becker and Marley McDonald, and executive-produced by Penny Lane, Time Bomb Y2K is a reminder to not rely too much on technology.

When Stephanie Ruhle took over MSNBC’s The 11th Hour a year ago, she did so as a self-described “huge fan” of the show.
It was Brian Williams who launched the program in 2016, quickly establishing an approach that recognized the late time slot it occupied, and the audience most likely to tune in.
“I loved it, because in a really chaotic time in politics it was a show at the end of the day that said, ‘here’s all the crazy that happened today, and here’s the most important stuff,’” Ruhle says. “I definitely wouldn’t consider the show a show rooted in ideology, but it’s a show that tries to be smart and thoughtful.”
Now firmly ensconced at 11 p.m., Ruhle has put her on stamp on the hour, leaning in to her background in finance (she was an anchor at Bloomberg TV and a banker at Credit Suisse before joining NBC,...

We are now in what is affectionately known as Phase 2 of the Oscar season, easily the most important part of the six-month-long journey to the Dolby as it gets really serious. You know it is serious because Academy members are not allowed to eat anymore — at least at screenings of movies in the awards sphere. They can still go to nominated movies with a Q&a (each film is allowed a set number in Phase 2).
They could eat and drink at receptions (held within walking distance to the screening room) in Phase 1, before...

Science fiction film M3GAN was undoubtedly the first big hit of 2023, with the film grossing 90 million globally in the first two weeks of its release. Though some have expressed disappointment about the film’s lack of horror (some reshoots were necessary in order to give it a PG-13 rating) there’s no denying that the film has been a giant success.
All of this must feel amazing to Allison Williams, who both stars in the film (as Gemma) and took on the role of executive producer for the first time. In spite of her success with her role on Girls, Williams has only done four movies in the nearly six years since the show has been off the air. As it turns out, she has a good reason for it — she takes herself, and her profession, very seriously.

Brian Williams has enlisted the representation of CAA, a signal that the veteran TV journalist is devoting more thought to his career trajectory after leaving longtime home NBCUniversal at the end of 2021.
In December of that year, Williams signed off from his MSNBC program, “The 11th Hour,” warning viewers that, in the wake of the insurrection in Washington on January 6, 2020, “the darkness at the edge of town has spread to the main roads and highways and neighborhoods. It’s now at the local bar and the bowling alley, at the school board and the grocery store, and it must be acknowledged and answered for.”
He may seek out new opportunities to do so in the not-too-distant future.

It’s that time of year again. While some directors annually share their favorite films of the year, Steven Soderbergh lists everything he consumed, media-wise. For 2022––another year in which he not only released a new film, but shot another––he still got plenty of watching in.
Along with catching up on 2022’s new releases, he took in plenty of classics, including Sorcerer, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Battle of Algiers, All That Jazz, and All About Eve. Quite intriguingly, he also watched cuts of David Fincher’s forthcoming The Killer four times over a week-long span in August. Ahead of a February release, he’s also watched cuts of his forthcoming Magic Mike’s Last Dance five times, the first time being only two months after shooting began.
See the list below via his official site.

There’s an age-old saying that goes, “It’s not what you know. It’s who you know.” The latest article from New York Magazine addressing the issue of certain celebrities getting their break due to their familial relations is sparking discussions. The article refers to them as “nepo babies” and it has been garnering responses from some of the more notable figures of the topic. Tom Hanks has his own children involved with show business and he’s addressed the issue in a recent interview according to The Hollywood Reporter.
While promoting his film, A Man Called Otto, Hanks explained in an interview with Reuters (via The Sun) that this notion isn’t as outlandish as it’s claimed to be. “Look, this is a family business. This is what we’ve been doing forever. It’s what all of our kids grew up in. If we were a...
