Turner-Smith and Cox team up as journalists investigating a presidential candidate. But there is none of the insider authenticity of director Amy Rice’s earlier Obama documentary
Film-maker Amy Rice spent two years on the campaign trail with Barack Obama to make a 2009 fly-on-the wall documentary. So it’s massively disappointing that her new fictional political thriller is so insipid and unsatisfying, and completely lacks any kind of authentic insider knowledge of Machiavellian political skullduggery. It’s as generic as they come, though British actor Jodie Turner-Smith is brilliant as a rookie reporter for the fictional Washington Chronicle who uncovers a scandal with the potential to blow open the presidential race.
Turner-Smith’s character, Eli James, is increasingly frustrated at having to write clickbait lifestyle articles such as “college dorm must-haves”. But when she uncovers a lottery scandal, she teams up with the paper’s Pulitzer-winning columnist Nicholas Booker. Their relationship is nicely played,...

David Wain's "Wet Hot American Summer" is the proper definition of a cult classic. When the film was released in 2001, it was both a critical and commercial flop, failing to make back a majority of its relatively cheap production budget. Despite the film's financial woes, the stars were aligned on this set for the film to become an eventual raunchy sleep-over classic.
One reason the film has endured through the years is that the casting director, Susie Farris, struck gold with this ensemble cast, which is mostly made up of some of comedy's then-up-and-comers who would become major stars down the line. Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, Molly Shannon, and Elizabeth Banks, the list goes on. Then there was a young version of everyone's favorite goofball, Paul Rudd, fresh off of "Clueless," he turned in a delightfully sardonic performance as camp counselor Andy.

This review originally ran June 13, 2022, in conjunction with the film’s world premiere at the Tribeca Festival.
Theater buffs who couldn’t snag a seat at this year’s Tony Awards will find some solace in “Broadway Rising,” a heartfelt tribute to all the shows that were shuttered between 2020 and 2021.
It does initially seem as though the film might suffer from a touch of solipsism, as actors talk expansively about centering their feelings during a period that wrought so much suffering across the globe. But director Amy Rice (“By the People”) wisely expands the story beyond the stage stars, making the impactful case that behind the bright lights lies an entire ecosystem essential to the city.
As such, she includes a range of representatives from the tens of thousands of Broadway workers who found themselves unemployed and worse during the early days of Covid-19.

"Showcases the dedication to return to the stage." Vertical Ent. has revealed a vibrant official trailer for a documentary film called Broadway Rising, made by acclaimed doc filmmaker Amy Rice. It follows the complex road to reopening Broadway in 2021, chronicling the hundreds of restaurant owners and staff, costume houses, designers and more. The film premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, and opens in select theaters this December. Directed by the Emmy-nominated Amy Rice, Broadway Rising is an inspiring documentary that chronicles the reopening of Broadway after the Covid-19 shutdown - from March 2020 until September 2021. The film turns the spotlight on the community and highlights their stories of doubt, anxiety, perseverance and ultimately triumph on the long-awaited opening night. This isn't the first pandemic film about Broadway, there's two others (both from last year): Reopening Night and On Broadway. This one spends more time with lots of the industry workers,...

Amy Rice’s “The Independent” begins with an intriguing thought experiment: What if John Cena ran for president as a well-intentioned, hyper-charismatic third-party candidate who promised to temper Republican insanity, bypass Democrat inaction, and altogether liberate America from the crypto-fascist corporate interests that have made this country too cancerous to govern? What if — this rather star-studded Peacock original movie teases in its opening flash-forward — that candidate so effectively reconciled the red/blue divide that he was leading the polls just days before the general election?
Those are tantalizing questions, made all the more so by the degree to which Cena’s wannabe himbo-in-chief — a former Olympian who’s now riding a best-selling manifesto called “A Declaration of Independence” all the way to the White House — is both likable in the extreme, and also believable in spite of his inexperience. Evan Parter’s script alludes to the fact that another political...

The script for “The Independent,” a political thriller with a few key plot twists and turns, was on The Black List around 10 years ago as a screenplay that had not been produced but had gotten some favorable attention.
Since it is a very topical piece that revolves around a presidential election, screenwriter Evan Parter must have had to re-write it considerably to make it fit the current political landscape; his basic structure is fairly solid and his characters are well chosen, but all of his dialogue consists of the sort of hyperbolized declarations of plot exposition that only gets by on guilty-pleasure TV shows.
The first scenes of “The Independent” drop us into the middle of a drama involving third-party presidential candidate Nate Sterling (John Cena), and we are expected to take in a large amount of information in a very short period of time. This opening sequence is so...

You can’t fault Peacock for its timing, dropping The Independent just a week before the all-important 2022 midterm elections. Nor can you quibble with the thriller’s grounding in our contemporary political reality, in which an inexperienced celebrity candidate can vault from long shot to frontrunner simply by offering a seemingly viable exit from America’s entrenched two-party stasis, with one side fueling the country’s rage while the other “sits on its hands and whines about it.” Whether election-fatigued audiences will have an appetite for this slick but superficial depiction of moral elasticity in politics and beleaguered truth in journalism remains an open question.
This first narrative feature from documentary director Amy Rice (HBO’s By the People: The Election of Barack Obama) is sturdy enough by the standards of most direct-to-streaming movie premieres. But that’s admittedly not a high bar to clear.

When Brian O’Shea founded the worldwide film sales and finance company The Exchange in 2011, streaming was still in its infancy, release windows were numerous and robust and DVD pre-sales could still provide a big chunk of a movie’s budget. In the ensuing decade, the landscape has undergone a rapid series of dramatic shifts, but the L.A.-based company has survived and prospered, acquiring, financing and selling more than 200 films, with budgets ranging from $5 million to $90 million, including Universal’s “2 Guns,” starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg; Sundance Award-winners “The Spectacular Now” and “Obvious Child,” and doc “Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street.”

At the virtual Cannes market, the Exchange is pre-selling political thriller “The Independent,” the narrative feature debut of twice Emmy-nominated director Amy Rice, starring “The Big Sick” star Kumail Nanjiani. Variety spoke to Rice about the film.

For those who aren’t fans of Masters of Sex and/or Lizzy Caplan, Friend of Bill might be a film that doesn’t quite rocket to the top of the “Must See” list, but there’s much to recommend here.
If nothing else, the fact that this is the same production collaboration that brought you Welcome to Me should be enough to get people to pay attention. That film, an Indie gem starring Kristen Wiig, was on my list of the year’s best, and this one looks just as interesting.
While not quite as offbeat in its premise as Welcome to Me, Friend of Bill has Lizzy Caplan playing a writer who is arrested for public intoxication, and forced to take a sabbatical. This leads to her return to her small hometown, where she has to deal with her mother, and two suitors while she struggles with sobriety.

London, Mar.25: Lindsay Lohan broke down on air after Oprah Winfrey gave her a telling off for her relaxed behaviour on her own TV show 'Lindsay'.
The actress had a bit of a diva moment in the third instalment of her show on Oprah Winfrey's Own network, because she didn't want it to look like a Kardashian-style reality show, the Mirror reported.
